Chp 36
Emrys twiddled the card in his fingers as he listened to Stan and Isabel's report of the night. He told them what happened when Nick Fury came to the house.
"I say go for it, sheriff", said Stan and Isabel glared at him. "What?", he asked.
"He has far more important things to do than gallivanting around being vigilantes", said Isabel.
"Imagine the immunity and what we can do with it", said Stan.
"It doesn't apply to you, idiot", said Isabel.
"Still, imagine what he can do with it", said Stan.
"Remember what happened when one of his men unlocked Elisabeth's past? Even she doesn't want to remember her time with them", said Isabel.
"It's quite tempting, you know", said Emrys. Isabel rolled her eyes when Stan gave her a smug smile. "Still, no rush. Like Is said, I got better things to do", said Emrys. He watched Steve Newlin on TV. That man could elude capture, causing Emrys to be curious.
"How does he escape?", Stan sounded annoyed as Steve debated with Nan on live TV.
"Clever, this man…, he's able to escape from our grasp", said Emrys.
"Sheriff, can't you just find him using your power?", asked Stan.
"He's in hiding and not just from us. IRS is looking for him too", said Emrys, causing Stan to chuckle.
"Fucking cheapskate", Stan mumbled.
"Still, let's leave him alone for now", said Emrys.
"Are you planning on doing something?", asked Isabel, worried about the young sheriff.
Emrys chuckled and sighed. "I thought of going back to the old house. Maybe I should assign a caretaker to maintain the house", he said.
"You should. That house has too many memories in it to be sold", said Isabel.
The next day, Emrys left a duplicate of himself as he travelled back to his old house in Shreveport. The house seemed to be maintained well enough. Perhaps Eric did come back and made sure the house was taken care of.
Emrys walked upstairs and opened the master bedroom. His parents' clothes were untouched. The bed was as neat as he last saw it and the toilet looked immaculate. As if a family never left the house, but he knew, that family – his family was no longer there.
He moved from the master bedroom to the study room. Nearby the window was his mother's easel was still standing tall. His toys were kept away in the boxes next to her work corner. On the other side of the room was a mahogany desk – his father's work area.
Emrys walked to the desk and opened one of the drawers. There, he found a folder and in it – all the drawings he made for his father. He drew Eric as a Viking, a knight fighting a dragon and all sorts of fantasy fairy tales his mother ever told him. How he wished the time would turn so he could go back to that moment. No vampires were after them. No one knew who or what they were. Everything was just happy and peaceful.
He headed downstairs and sat down in front of the piano stool. He played a few tunes before deciding to bring the piano back to Dallas. He made the call and made sure the delivery reached Dallas and the piano was intact. As the delivery team left, an SUV parked itself in front of his house. Great, another SHIELD agent probably trying to persuade him in joining the vigilante group.
Out came a few people and they don't even look like agents from SHIELD. Emrys took a closer look and recognized Neko, but in civilian clothes. The rest, he didn't know.
"Sheriff…", Neko greeted him.
"Agent Takashi, it's good to see you again. Please, come in", said Emrys as he opened the door to them. All of them gathered in the library. "Quite the company you brought today", said Emrys.
"These are the very few people from Division 14", said Neko.
"Division 14?", asked Emrys, curious.
"There were 13 divisions in Rounin…, until they got made by HYDRA. Most members and some leaders died while the rest went into hiding", said one of them in a very fancy suit, "My name is Edmund Skye. My father was the second-in-command of 4th Division".
"The rest of you?", asked Emrys.
"My mother was one of the high-ranking members 13th Division, but she died during 9/11 attack. My name is Lucas Milligan. I'm a demigod", said the one with a very striking pair of emerald eyes.
"Demigod?", Emrys thought he's the only weird one around. Lucas's skin turned blue and his eyes turned red. The room suddenly turned cold and Emrys remembered a story his father once told him. "A Jotunn…, frost giant. Well, I'll be damned", Emrys chuckled. He turned to the remaining two members.
"I'm human", said another one, "I mean, I'm Charles Reagan".
"I'm Seraf. Like Neko, I can do anything", said another one with deep amethyst eyes.
"There are others, but you'll meet them…, that is if you agree on joining", said Neko.
"And what brings you to my territory?", asked Emrys.
"Just to be acquainted with you, sheriff. We pose no threat against you", said Edmund.
"I'll be the judge of that. Well, let me welcome you to Dallas then", said Emrys with a smile, "Other than official business, I still don't understand why you are here".
"You believe your father had killed Russell Edgington?", asked Edmund.
"I am not in position to question his actions", said Emrys.
"Who are we to question what our fathers do?", said Lucas, but the way he said it, it sounded sad.
"You have daddy issues?", asked Emrys.
"Some of us do", said Charles.
"Abandoned?", asked Emrys again.
"Mine is somewhere", said Lucas.
"Mine…, God knows where he is. If he's dead…, it won't matter anymore", said Charles.
"Why is that?", Emrys got curious. There're other who had worse fathers in their lives.
"He lied to my mother…, said he loved her. Ditched her when he found out she was pregnant with me", said Charles.
"You guys at least have dads and mums to remember them by", said Neko.
"What happened to yours?", asked Emrys.
"My mum turned out to be HYDRA and murdered my dad. Then, she abandoned me at the gates of Xavier's School", said Neko. Emrys turned to Edmund.
"When the members were made and murdered, my father hid me and my mother in Prague. He took my new born sister and stayed at a small town in California, disguised himself as a dentist. When I heard that he met a freak accident, Director Fury was sure that it was HYDRA. My sister just finished her residency in New York when it happened", said Edmund.
"I'm sorry to hear all those", said Emrys, "Well, my parents were happy together, although I doubt my mother knew of my father's transgressions. Still, she was happy till her last breath".
"We share a common thing here, sheriff", said Edmund.
"Still, that's not enough reason to get me to join in. I have bigger things to do here", said Emrys.
"We know that. Russell made some mess and left the Authority to clean it up for him, but think about it, sheriff. We need someone of your abilities to help our cause. There are more people like Russell out there, maybe even worse", said Neko.
"I will let you know when I've reached my verdict agent", said Emrys.
