Chapter 35
For some reason Edward didn't need restraining. I held my breath; sucked in all the air I could muster and latched onto his arms; knowing he was much stronger than me and it wouldn't make much difference.
But it didn't matter, because he continued to breathe normally and looked at me as if I were crazy; while my wild wide eyes stared him down, stared into his unblinking blooded eyes. Though I stopped breathing; the scent seemed to be trapped within me.
''Bella, are you alright?'' He asked slowly. I was too puzzled to answer; did he not smell it? The fact that I couldn't smell him, did that mean he couldn't smell anyone?
''Human blood,'' I puffed out, using what little air I had. ''Don't you smell it?'' I asked, even though I knew he didn't.
''No,'' he sighed. ''the only thing that happened was you tensing.''
''What's your favourite song?''
''What? Bella, we need to get you out of here.''
I need the distraction. I thought hard-really hard, hoping he would hear so I wouldn't have to use up anymore of the air I need to speak if not for anything else. But he didn't-which left me no choice but to say them. ''Distract me.'' Distract me; please god or else I'll kill the poor human who's done nothing wrong.
He smiled. ''Well, I could tell you that I love the song scar tissue by The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. And you could tell me that right now you love Brick by Boring Brick by Paramore, but you love a new song every day; or I could just do this.'' He leaned towards me, and even though I thought-No, I need to focus on not killing the human-I leaned in too.
I had read about a million kisses; but I was never good at describing them. When I wrote about them; I said it how it was, not how it is. I don't think I could actually describe the rush of feelings that ran through me in that moment. I admitted to myself-almost guiltily-that he had distracted me. That even though I knew there was human blood so close to me, I stayed grounded. Literally.
It annoyed me that my arms were pinned down; when they longed to reach up and tangle in his hair. But I wouldn't trust myself either in this situation. It's so easy to get lost in him; with him, too unbearably easy. I think about him when he's not there and when he is. Each touch, even the lightest of them, send me into this downward spiral of crazy fire.
And I didn't even care that this was only happening to distract me; because I knew it wasn't just for that reason. He eventually let my arms go so his hands could tangle in my hair. I didn't know where my hands should go, but I thought having them pinned motionlessly at my side wasn't the best place to have them. But I didn't really have to decide, because we pulled away from each other; not because we had had enough or that we need to breathe; but because we couldn't really go any farther, not in a forest, not like this.
I automatically sniffed the air; it was safe, the wind had changed direction. ''We should hunt a bit more before we head back; I don't want to face the family yet.''
''Yeah,'' he muttered, absentmindedly. ''okay.''
He hopped up and pulled me with him, then he started laughing and pulling twigs, leaves and dirt from my hair.
''Oh great.'' I muttered, trying to brush some dirt away.
''Sorry,'' he chuckled. ''I guess some of this is my fault.''
''Yeah,'' I shrugged. ''so you really didn't smell anything before?''
He shook his head, still towering over me, fixing my hair. ''I just read your mind for a second; you thought of nothing but blood and pain and death.''
''I can't help it.'' I clamped my eyes closed. ''I'm very bad at controlling myself.''
''I can't control myself around you.'' He stressed the word, smiling down at me.
I managed to bring my lips up into a slight smile of unease. Not because of his words, but mainly because once again, I was still the weakest vampire. I didn't realize I was so shallow; but on some level I was looking forward to not being looked at as the weakest.
But I pushed those thoughts aside; we had bigger things to worry about.
''I just realized-you never told me what you wrote.''
''Books.'' I answered, eyes lightening. ''I write books.''
''Oh, I was just assuming you wrote something much less interesting then books.'' He joked weakly.
''Have you heard of Marie Platt?'' Of course he had; we had talked about it in English that first day.
His eyes widened slightly and he took a step back. ''You're Marie Platt?''
I nodded. ''Marie's my middle name; Platt's Esme's second. She encouraged me to write.''
''Wow,'' he sighed. ''that's so good.''
I shrugged; I know many people want to be authors and I might seem ungrateful for it. But I wanted to write because I loved it; not for money or fame, though money and fame happened and I have to deal with it.
I heard a twig snap and my head went towards the noise of a few deer crossing and running over some fallen trees. I grinned. ''I'll race you.''
I was fast; but his new-born speed and strength caught up with me and passed me out in no time.
Sometimes things just happen too fast for you to register, you know it's coming, happening; but you're defenceless to do anything about it. You might panic and scream; beg and plead, but nothing can help.
I screamed at the top of my lungs; as if he mightn't hear me if I wasn't as laud as I could be. But then I realized we were close to home; I wasn't just calling to Edward to stop running; I was alerting my family too.
And when I saw Irina and a red headed woman, Victoria, standing near a man in a black cape with long golden hair I knew what had happened. I didn't know who the man was; but he was from the Volturi, and he could cover up scents.
It was the only thing that could have happened; my family would have to rely on sound but not smell to find us, because he had masked our scent too. ''Sorry to spoil your adorable moment,'' Victoria snarled, teeth blared; venom seeming to gleam. ''but I'm going to have to end it.''
End it; not just our 'adorable moment' as she put it, but I feared, she meant she was going to end everything.
