Clash in the Snow Country: Legacy Version

Chapter 34: New Season

(Author's Note) Well this is it. At long last, we're crossing the finish line. To all those that manage to keep up with this story over these long years, you have my utmost thanks.

Rainbow Glacier

10:02 PM

With the fighting finally stopped, the chilling air from the coming night began to settle in, bringing a new degree of cold to the land. The stars' light began shining down unobstructed to the landscape, showing the devastation. The Rainbow Glacier was gone; in its place was a sizeable hole fifty meters wide and nearly twice that deep. Yet at the bottom, a dull glow could be seen reflecting the riches just waiting to be claimed.

Hatake Kakashi moved silently, placing the unconscious blond next to his two sleeping teammates. Undoing his cloak, he settled it over his three students to allow them some warmth. He glanced to the side, held up his hand and fired off a small Faiatama to provide some additional heat. As much as he would like to move them to a more appropriate location, there were some things to attend to first.

Walking over to the edge of the crater, he found Koyuki just staring down at the treasure below. "I imagine it's not quite the legacy you had in mind," he offered up.

"It was a legacy I was prepared to turn my back on," she replied, not shifting her gaze. "Everything that happened… all for that down there."

Kakashi gave a shrug. "I could destroy it if you want."

The Snow Princess finally looked at him, not sure if Kakashi was serious or just messing with her. Before she could answer, she could see figures coming towards them. Yuki-nin. "So, what will you do?"

"Huh?" was all the young woman could blurt out.

"Our mission was to see you safely to the Snow Country and protect you during your time here," Kakashi reminded her. "With your uncle's passing, his power base destroyed and the truth out, I'd say our mission is concluded. We're under no further obligation to remain with you."

Koyuki was just staring at him, seeing where this was going.

"The choice is yours, Koyuki-san. You can run away again, leave it all behind. The treasure, the country, all of it. You can go back to being the actress you were. Hell, you could leave that behind too. The fishing industry isn't bad, if you ask me. Constantly at sea, working along the beaches." He glanced towards the advancing shinobi. "Likewise, you can choose to stay here, build upon whatever legacy you feel is worthwhile. You can decide it all, right here, right now. No shinobi to twist your arm, no guilt trips to make you act, no obligations you don't want."

She looked at Kakashi with a completely blank look on her face as the first of the shinobi came to them. A quick glance confirmed it was none of Doto's loyalist faction but rather those from the train battle that had turned against him. Several of them looked over at the sleeping Genin, while others came to the crater, nearly falling in from the shock of what was inside. One of them came up to the actress. "Where's Doto-sama? Who are you?"

So, this shinobi didn't recognize her. Koyuki turned to Kakashi for an answer… only to find him gone. She was alone with several Yuki-nin, who looked utterly lost at what to do, though one of them was absolutely giddy from looking at all the treasure.

Koyuki took one more look around at her country… at her countrymen. She ran away from this all ten years ago and did everything she could to keep running. People had supported her, people had died for her. This country had its heart ripped out and torn apart and yet people continued on, building something for themselves. Despite all the hardships, they did not run. Especially three young Genin.

So, the young woman made her decision.

"I am Kazahana Koyuki. Daughter of Kazahana Sousetsu and Kazahana Funsui. Niece of the previous Daimyou Kazahana Doto. I am here to bring Spring back to this country."

The Snow ninja all looked at her in a stunned silence… then one by one dropped to their knees.

Ten Minutes later

Koyuki stood at the Rainbow Glacier remains, waiting. Six of the Yuki-Nin were up alongside her, standing like the professionals they were. Their stances were lax but very alert and two of them had their hands lowered to their weapons.

To bring Spring back to Snow. Metaphor or not, doing so in any capacity was going to offer up many hurdles. Koyuki had been gone from Snow for ten years, doing everything from low-end jobs to acting. Logically, the people of Snow had no reason to accept a runaway like her back on the throne. The common people probably forgot all about her, the shinobi concerned with far more pressing matters both local and afar. The samurai and men-at-arms would be nervous and worried with the prospect of being forced to choose a new side. With Doto gone, the various feudal lords would be scheming to control the power vacuum left behind, never mind Doto's more vigorous supporters. Akufu and the San Eihei had been his strongest and most vocal supporters as a whole, but plenty of others like his personal warlords were still very much out there.

Coming up from the horizon was a small group of Yuki-Nin. Unlike the ones that stood beside her, these all displayed the Loyalist emblem on their chests.

And that first hurdle was starting right now.

Among the Loyalists, one emerged from the group and began walking towards them. Koyuki nodded to those shinobi at her side, who breathed out hard but did not move as the Snow Princess began walking out towards her opposite. The two met halfway between the groups of ninja. "You speak for all of Yukigakure's Loyalists?"

"I do," answered one Tekiya Sankaku. The kunoichi wore the typical Snow ninja attire but her hood was down, allowing her short brown hair to flow free. "For both those that remain at the castle and those of us still at Yukigakure." She crossed her arms. "So, let's get right to it: Why should we accept you as Doto-sama's successor?"

Koyuki didn't say anything at first, but then she did what she did best; she acted. She spun a tale on how she came here, how the Leaf ninja got involved, the journey across the sea, and the struggle on the mainland. Sankaku began so enthralled in the tale she momentarily forgot they were speaking of Snow's future and simply wanted to know how the story ended.

"Which brings us here," Koyuki stated, gesturing around the ruined landscape. "I've changed over the course of this journey. So if you'll have me… I'll bring that change to Snow as well. But it won't be a change like Doto did. It won't be progress for advancement or schemes for conquest; it will be change for the betterment of all, a time of healing and growth."

"Noble enough," her opposite agreed. "And what happens to those who supported those ideals? Who supported Doto-sama?"

A straightforward question that asked much more: What happened to those who held power due to Doto? Would the Loyalists be forced to disband after being on top?

Koyuki kept her gaze firm. "I have no intention of disbanding anything." She glanced to the side. "Just look at our beloved landmark." Sankaku followed her gaze to once again look upon the ruined Rainbow Glacier.

"The shift in power before just brought conflict and misery. Asking you all to capitulate just to satisfy me will not get us anywhere. We have already walked that path; Snow has walked that path. We fought, we destroyed and we gained little in return." Without warning, Koyuki tossed something to the Yuki-nin, who caught it easily.

A brilliant red ruby.

"Pretty rocks," Koyuki said. "And while the world views it as valuable, it is the people I would rather put my time and effort towards. These resources can help, but they aren't the answer. So I'm asking you, as a Snow Ninja of the Hidden Snow Village, to help me. Help me heal this country. Work alongside me and those that would stand with me. You may fear losing your position, you may fear retaliation from those exploited. So work with me. Justify your positions, earn those supports and approvals. Show everyone, myself included, that power can be trusted with you to guide this country.

"What say you?"

Sankaku looked at the ruby in her hand. The Loyalists behind her stood tall, waiting. The regular Yuki-nin on the other side moved their hands away from their weapons but remained alert. Both sides waiting, wondering.

Finally, Sankaku moved. With her free hand she reached towards her chest and took off the golden medallion that symbolized that of a Loyalist. Loyalty to Doto.

And she promptly threw it to the snow-covered ground.

This action was mirrored by Sankaku's compatriots… and a wind began to blow across the landscape. One that seemed surprisingly warm.

The Next Day

Naruto's eye snapped open as he sat up. "Okay… who dropped the Hokage Monument on me?" he asked as he rubbed his head. As his vision came into focus, he realized he was in a room. It looked like some kind of infirmary with patient beds alongside the wall, each one having medical equipment beside it. On the other side was a series of rooms; probably offices for the medical personnel. He looked down on himself to see he was wearing a white hospital gown. Bandages covered him all over his limbs, chest and especially head. There were signs of treatment about him, making him feel fresh and new. He lifted an arm and took some sniffs. Seems he had even been bathed.

"I see you're awake, at least." Naruto looked over to his right to see Sasuke and Sakura there. Like him, they had been treated and tended to, though unlike him they had been sitting on their respective beds rather than laying in them as he had. "As expected of the dead last, you're the last awake," the Uchiha Avenger quipped.

"Still better looking than you," the blond shot back. Like Naruto, Sasuke was sporting a hospital gown and was bandaged up, though where Naruto had more emphasis on his head, Sasuke's was on his arms as both were in casts, his fingers just free enough to perform basic functions.

A second later, a hospital slipper hit Naruto right in the face. "Don't say that about Sasuke-kun!" came the predictable reply.

"Great, so the girlfriend is back in full form," came Naruto's muffled voice as the slipper slid off his face. Seemed that whatever issue she had with the Oh So Mighty Sasuke was finally behind them. Sakura, as opposed to the boys, didn't have a gown, which was at the foot of her bed. She instead had thick bandages around her chest with some shorts on. Otherwise, she didn't sport as many bandages as both the boys; more like patchworks all over her limbs and face. Her hands were completely encased and her hair was damp. Though as proven with the slipper, she could still kick things just fine. "Just need Baka-sensei and we'll all be back to square one."

Naruto immediately felt the change in atmosphere at the mention of Kakashi. "Um… about that, Naruto…" Sakura started.

"Yeah, yeah, I know," Naruto waved her off as he threw off his covers and sat up properly. "Don't be disrespectful to the - " He was cut off by some tapping on his shoulder. As expected, he turned around.

Standing before him was a walking corpse, half of it rotten away with worms moving in and out. But that degraded silver hair and the facemask gave it away as the figure with blood seeping out of its eyes pointed at Naruto. "… All…. your…. fault…."

From that day onward, the entire Snow Country would swear they heard a shrill scream straight from the underworld.

Ten Minutes Later

Naruto was torn. On the one hand, Kakashi caught him off guard so thoroughly the prankster in him couldn't help but be impressed.

On the other hand… WHAT THE HELL!? This lazy baka-sensei was alive all this time while they did all the work just to go and show up after everything was done!?

"Let it never be said I can't pull of a prank of my own," the Jounin said with pride. "Still want to call me unoriginal now?"

"Still holding a grudge over that?" Naruto spat out. "Maybe I should start calling you Sasaina-sensei."

"Don't worry," the kunoichi among them spoke up, voice full of venom. "He got us too."

Sasuke rolled his eyes. "Apparently it was his way of passing the time until you woke up."

"Great; now that we've got all the 'important' stuff out of the way… what happened? Last thing I remember was Doto and some big treasure…"

"You're currently at the Snow Country's Capital," Kakashi answered, drawing the attention of all three of them towards him. "It's been twelve hours since that fight."

"That's all…?" the boy had to ask.

The man's visible eye gave its smirk. "That's all. Honestly, I thought you three would sleep for a week after everything you went through." He took a seat in a nearby chair by their beds. "But you should know your efforts were successful. Doto is gone, and his power base is broken. Preparations are already in place for Koyuki-san's coronation."

Three intense stares merely waited.

"… but that's clearly not what's on your mind right now." The Copy Ninja gave a sigh. "Alright, alright, aryarya. You kids and your priorities." He straightened up in his seat and composed himself.

"So let's start at the beginning."

-Flashback Two days ago-

Kakashi's large ice whale rammed into Nadare's own and they both went crashing down onto the iceberg itself. The iceberg's collapse rate increased dramatically. Kakashi then attempted to move… but couldn't. What!? Kakashi looked down and saw that his feet were encased in ice. When did that happen!? By whom!? Alarmed now, he used his Sharingan to trace the chakra source back to its caster. What he saw astounded him.

IMPOSSIBLE!

That was Kakashi's only thought as the iceberg collapsed right on top of him.

A brilliant light emerged from his outstretched hands. Raikiri. Kakashi stood firm, allowing his jutsu to cut through the falling ice, diverting to the sides as opposed to crushing him. He was still chilled to the bone and thorough drenched, but he was standing. After about ten minutes of this, the collapse finally stopped…

leaving the Copy Ninja buried underneath a mountain of ice.

"I thought I was the scarecrow, not the abominable snowman."

-End of flashback-

"It took me almost two hours to dig myself out of all that;nearly caused it to start collapsing anew several times, in fact. Naturally, by the time I finally got out, you and the ship were long gone." Kakashi shifted his position as he flicked his nose. "Fortunately, not only I do I have an excellent nose, but I also knew the general route of the ship. Even then, it took me another two hours to finally catch up. By that point, you three had fought the shapeshifter."

"Wait, you were back that soon!?" Sakura shouted out in irritation. "We could have used you!"

"I know," Kakashi said simply. "But that shapeshifter was still on the loose. That's what I noticed upon when the iceberg collapsed on me. The source of the jutsu that stopped me came from the ship's direction, not from the three Yuki-nin. Recall earlier that we discovered that crew member drained of his blood. Between the two incidents, I determined it was more beneficial to remain hidden. It was my hope I could use my 'death' to my advantage and corner our enemy."

"Bullshit," Naruto said. "You could have still told us. Whatever happened to all that teamwork you preached?"

"Not that you listen to my sermons," Kakashi replied dryly, rolling his visible eye. "I also told you that it's the nature of the ninja to remain hidden and strike when your enemy least expects it." Seeing the look upon his students' faces, he added, "But truthfully, I had an ulterior motive."

"You wanted to see how we'd react," Sasuke offered.

The Copy Ninja gave a nod. "Yes. It was a rare chance to see how you three would operate without any direct supervision. How you would conduct yourselves, what measures you would take… even if you would decide to continue the mission."

That seemed to turn the Kyubi host around as he was now nodding in approval. "So naturally you were impressed by how awesome we were! We kicked that creep's ass and sent him running to his mommy! Good call, Sensei, good call."

"Well, you did help one of your group…" Kakashi glanced at Sakura, who looked rather embarrassed as she pulled her own hospital gown back on. "…through her emotional problems." He rubbed the back of his head. "Though forcing her into a fight isn't quite what I hoped… but it worked."

"That happened late at night," Sasuke remembered. "You still hadn't found that spy by then?"

Kakashi shook his head. "No. Say what you will about his fighting abilities, but his ability to blend in was exceptional. All I knew was that he was among the ship's crew and could have been anyone. Doing it right, he could have even been constantly assuming different forms. So I deemed it necessary to keep hidden myself. Then… a problem occurred."

All three Genin looked on with interest.

"When the ship arrived at Snow, I realized someone had left. What I also realized was that the same number of people still remained on the ship. I concluded our spy produced a clone, both to keep his cover intact and to make contact with Yukigakure to help with his mission. The problem, however, was that I didn't know if the one who left was the clone or the original. So I decided to follow suit. I left a clone behind with you guys and began tracking the other across Snow's landscape.

"During that time, I noticed that the Snow teams had already been mobilized and spread out searching for Koyuki. It proved challenging to try and track my foe while avoiding them. Then I heard over the radio that Koyuki had been found. By that time, I was an hour away from you."

"Is that why you didn't bother to come back and help us?" Sakura pressed. "Or have your clone pitch in?"

"At the time, I didn't know you had encountered any Snow ninja. My clone was supposed to keep the groups off you as long as possible, but that obviously didn't work out," Kakashi answered. "And against just one or two isolated teams, I wasn't worried about you three. If anything, I was more worried about the beating you'd give to any Snow ninja."

Despite themselves, the three felt immense pride at the vote of confidence.

"Then, of course, you ran into Doto and far more Snow ninja than I would have liked. When I heard about that, that was when I decided to abandon chasing after my quarry and make my way back to you. I moved as fast as I could, but by the time I got there, it was over. My clone likewise was prepared to act but unlike some people…" He glanced at Naruto. "My clones aren't able to sustain themselves for long durations… nor was I expecting to be away as long as I did. Even if my clone did reveal itself, it wouldn't have lasted long enough to make any difference and would have given away its position for no benefit."

Kakashi glanced at Sasuke and Sakura. "Though as it turned out, that was a blessing in disguise since it was able to pull you two out of the frozen lake before it expired completely."

Sasuke found air exploding into his lungs again, resulting in a deep gasp as he felt the water fall off him. The blackness around him was slowly coming back into focus as the distinct colors made their way back into his vision. Sounds began filling his ears again as he found himself on all fours, coughing and hacking up water.

He heard something that sounded very much like a swear. Looking into that direction, he saw nothing there other than tiny bits of smoke as Sasuke took in his surroundings.

"So THAT'S how you two survived!" Naruto pointed at them happily. "I was wondering how you got out!"

"We were wondering that ourselves," Sasuke agreed, turning red for some reason. "One moment we were trapped in the water, losing consciousness… the next, we were on the ground again."

Sakura instinctively rubbed her head. "I was already out. I can still feel that blow."

"A storm had made everyone else abandon the area," Sasuke picked up. "So I ended up carrying Sakura on my back and looking for some shelter for us." He looked at Kakashi. "Obviously you didn't find us."

"Obviously," Kakashi echoed. "When I finally arrived at that site, everyone was gone. You, the Snow ninja, the movie crew, everyone. Of course the storm was in full force by then, but the longer I waited, the more I would lose your trails. So I toughed out the storm and managed to deduce what happened: Naruto and Koyuki were taken by Doto, and Sasuke and Sakura were off in the wilderness somewhere. I have to admit, that's when I started to worry. My reserves were not so good that I could continue making clones to cover both directions, especially if I was expecting a fight for rescue. It was a difficult choice: go after the mission objective, or find my wayward students."

The three Genin noted a certain hollowness in his voice. Almost like he was remembering something. "So what did you choose?"

"I ended up making a different discovery," Kakashi answered. "While doing my search, I found the bodies of Sandayuu's men… and noticed that one was missing: Sandayuu himself. That's when I knew that the shapeshifter had taken Sandayuu's form. I suspect that the clone decided to play along with Sandayuu's mission and used it to stage his death so he could move more freely. I found evidence of exploding tags on top of the mountain. He would lead the charge, the clone would allow them to get slaughtered, and then make an avalanche to bury all the evidence. No one would know that 'Sandayuu' was gone and he could move about more freely."

There was another explosion up on the hills and another small avalanche started coming down right towards the dead and dying Samurai. The Genin looked in horror, while Doto looked on in pleasure. Even the land itself was sick of this man's pathetic whining!

Sandayuu didn't seem to care. "Don't... waste your tears... on me... Princ..." he wasn't able to finish the word as the snow covered him completely, burying him alive if he wasn't already dead. What a horrible way to go.

A saddened look appeared over Sakura's face. "So then… it's true? That he killed Sandayuu and posed as him the entire time? Even when he hired us?" That earned a long drawn out 'what' of disbelief from Naruto.

Kakashi was silent for a minute. "I'm afraid so. Upon that discovery, I made my decision and moved out."

The trio nodded in understanding… until they realized that Kakashi dropped them with that tidbit and never actually stated which choice he made!

"So night came about, and by then, you two-" He gestured at Sasuke and Sakura. "-had already reunited with the movie crew and moved into the castle. At that time, I discovered that our enemy had masqueraded as Orochimaru to get the Snow ninja on his side to do his job for him. I likewise learned he was slowly sabotaging their efforts, so the moment he had Sasuke, they would be in no position to stop him. I decided to help with that. I eliminated the outposts that guarded the castle while he served communications."

Sasuke rolled his eyes. "And once again, you decided to keep playing dead and not actually tell us anyway."

"Keep in mind, Naruto and Koyuki were in prison. Not the most discreet area for me to keep low, especially when Doto learned about Naruto's… roommate. Likewise, you two were in a very social party filled with samurai and shinobi. Contacting you there risked drawing more attention to yourselves, which you were trying to avoid regardless. And charging into Doto's castle with his most valiant supporters wouldn't have gotten me very far. Dismantling all that from the inside out proved far more useful. You guys may not like that logic, but it was a contributing factor on why Doto's forces were so disorganized when you finally did make your move."

"And when the fighting started?" Sakura pressed.

"At that time, I had nearly cornered the shapeshifter when you two enacted your plan. I decided to try and meet up with you instead of pursuing him. I kept myself hidden, eliminating what Yuki-nin I could on the way to the Grand Hall. That's when fortune turned our way in the form of the ninja that Doto abandoned. They began attacking as well and threw the entire place into chaos, though not without cost. That infighting delayed me long enough to the point that the routes to the prison were sealed off and I had no way to reach you guys down there… and I didn't know about the Hell Asylum escape route.

"So I turned my efforts back to the fighting. I felt the best way to get you out was to help the insurgents and deal with Doto. I also wanted to get the film crew out before they got dragged in too deep. As it turned out, you three managed to get to Doto before I did, which led you three to fight Nadare, Fubuki and Mizore. I saw some of that and was quite impressed. I finally caught up to you when you cornered Doto at the Rainbow Glacier."

Seeing their gazes, he could see what they were going to say next. "Yes, I was there for your fights. And no, I chose not to interfere. Let's be honest, none of you would have forgiven me if I butted into your fights."

Their gazes deflated a bit at that and no one bothered to correct him. "So once you three finished Doto, I was going to appear and congratulate you… but our friend beat me to it. In hindsight, I probably should have seen that coming. All that chaos and you three being so tired made for the perfect window, but it honestly slipped my mind at that point."

"So what's your big excuse now?" Sakura spat out. "That freak nearly skewered me!"

"What now!? When did THAT happen!?"

"I can answer that one," Sasuke brought up, ignoring Naruto's constant 'tell me!' rant as the Uchiha looked directly at Kakashi.

"You still don't trust me, do you, Kakashi?"

The atmosphere darkened at that revelation. "I was hoping you would finally put my doubts to rest," Kakashi conceded. "You did break a lot of rules and trust to gain control over your Curse Seal, Sasuke. And as I mentioned at the Glacier, I can understand your reasons for going to Orochimaru." He gave his smiling eye. "But you weren't even tempted and stood your ground the entire time. Well done."

Naruto's head was jerking back and forth in rapid succession between the other three members of Team Seven. WHY DOES IT FEEL LIKE I GOT KICKED OUT OF THE CONVERSATION!? Determined to NOT be left out, he pointed at Kakashi. "Alright, so who was that freak shapeshifter you spent all that time tailing?"

"Akihiro Kakusu," Kakashi answered. "An old spy master from the previous war… and one that I had a history with. I may not have been able to catch him,but it gave me plenty of time to determine who he was. His skill set, mannerisms, methods, grudge against me, everything. Simple process of elimination and his stunt with Sandayuu's 'death' was the final piece I needed. Though the shapeshifting was new, so that threw me off for a while. Given he was trying to bring Sasuke back to Orochimaru, I can only presume we have him to thank for that." Kakashi snorted behind his mask. "I'm going to have to have a word with the Warden of Blood Prison. Kakusu was supposed to be executed long before now."

"Must had been some grudge," the scarred eye boy spoke this time. "Those forms he took during your fight… that was your old team."

Naruto's jaw dropped at that statement. SO MANY QUESTIONS!

This time, the Jounin gave a loud sigh. "I suppose there's no denying that. Yes, he took the form of my old teammates. And before you ask, no, I'm not going to talk about it." Looking up at this three students' annoyance, he cut in with, "But I'll make you three a promise: The day you all achieve Chunin rank, I'll tell you everything about my time under the Fourth Hokage."

Their faces softened slightly at that and the foxy blond just broke out into a chuckle. "Well, that shouldn't take too long!" he punched out happily. "With the exception of Baka-sensei, Tsunade-baachan is going to be amazed at what this team did! I fully expect a parade in our honor! With me first, of course! Being declared Chunin is the least we deserve!" He gave a heartfelt laugh at it, already daydreaming of his promotion. Oh yes, this was going to be great!

"Ah, yes, about that…" Kakashi said simply. "When get back to Konoha, I shall be informing Tsunade-sama of your feats on this mission - "

Team 7 beamed happily.

"- and how you all utterly failed so miserably on this mission that you should be sent back to the Academy."

And happiness gone.

Immediate rage emerged from all three Genin, demanding 'what the hell' from their sensei. "FAILED MISERABLY?!" "WE FOUGHT OUR ASSES OFF!" "WHILE YOU HID!" "WE TOOK DOWN DOTO!" "SAVED A COUNTRY!" "BEAT DOZENS OF SNOW NINJA!" "WE FOUND A TREASURE, DAMMIT!""I TAKE BACK EVERYTHING NICE I EVER SAID ABOUT YOU!" "I LIKED YOU BETTER DEAD!" "I'M GOING TO KICK YOUR ASS FOR THIS!"

Kakashi just sat in silence as the three yelled their heads off at him; at least, before they started opening up their injuries, forcing them to calm down. "While I'm sure you would all love to take my head for that, the truth is the truth… besides, you're in no condition to take me on right now."

Naruto jerked at that and not because of his injuries this time. "You should learn by now, Baka-sensei, what I do to those that underestimate me!" He pointed at the man. "Just what the FUCK do you find wrong with our performance!?"

"Tell me. Did you succeed in your mission?" Kakashi asked in his more natural lazy-like manner.

"OF COURSE WE DID!" Naruto yelled back, ignoring the reopening of his wounds. "WE TOOK DOWN DOTO!"

"That wasn't your mission."

There was a slight pause. Then Sasuke spoke up, in a slightly less aggravated tone. "… we saved the Snow Country."

"Admirable, but that's not what you came for."

A sinking feeling began emerging in the young teenagers. "… we protected Koyuki…" Sakura attempted.

Kakashi looked at them directly in the eye. "Oh? When?"

That one word lodged in their throats as they felt their anger slowly leaving them.

"'Our mission is to guard Fujikaze Yukie. The actress best known for her role as Princess Gale.'" Kakashi quoted from a time that seemed so long ago. "Over the course of her next movie production in the Snow Country. Now I ask again: Did you three do that?"

There was silence, the dawn of the accusation settling in.

"When we started this mission, all three of you went about your own things, leaving me to do the actual guard work," Kakashi began. While his tone was still rather lazy, there was a bit more iron to it. "Now since you three were using that time to train your skills, I didn't mind so much. You were putting your time to productive use that would benefit the mission.

"But the moment I went missing was when you should have stepped up. Instead, each of you got bogged down with your own issues. Rather than coming together and taking charge of things, each of you just went your own way as before. So, tell me… when I was first gone…which one of you bothered to look after the client?"

Dead silence.

"That's right. None of you did. And you knew full well there was an enemy aboard. You all fought that enemy. Yet not one of you could look past your own needs and do your duty. You left Koyuki unguarded the entire time you remained on the boat."

The man crossed his arms. "Eventually by that night, you finally started to work out your issues amongst each other just in time to arrive at Snow… and then what happened? The Snow ninja attacked and you all acted like the Genin you are. Each of you rushed out to defend and forgot about keeping an eye on Koyuki… a person with a habit of running away. And sure enough, as soon as she got an opening, she ran for it."

Kakashi closed his visible eye. "But the crux was the train battle. Yes, you three defeated fifty Snow ninja and spooked Doto for good measure." He opened his eye at that point. "But all that meant was that reinforcements were able to blindside you afterwards." He glanced at Sasuke and Sakura. "You two ended up trapped in a frozen lake."

Both of them looked down.

Kakashi shifted his gaze to Naruto. "And when you tried to rescue Koyuki, you were captured instead. At that moment, you three were done. Dead. Without me, Sasuke and Sakura would have drowned. Likewise, Naruto was in no position to do anything. Koyuki landed in the hands of the person who hated her most. He could have killed her at any point and not one of you three could have stopped him."

"What about you?" Naruto attempted. "All that hiding - "

"Allowed me to remain free and unobstructed," Kakashi cut in. "Which was more than I could say for you guys. Even when I was undercover, I still made a point to watch Koyuki and you three. That's how I know what happened. If push came to shove, I probably could have gotten Koyuki out of her uncle's castle and fled. I did it once before and I had the advantage of everyone believing I was dead."

"But if you had been with us in the first place, we wouldn't have been in trouble!"

"We can deal with what-ifs all day," Kakashi replied. "Sure, I'll grant you that if I had fought with you at the train battle, we might had been able to avoid some of the worst outcomes. But the rest of it? You didn't guard Koyuki on the ship, you didn't keep an eye on her when you landed, and that disorganization was what led to your situation later on. Even your plan for the Castle here came down to sheer dumb luck. You didn't know Kakusu or I were going around sabotaging things, so you couldn't take advantage of it. Likewise, the Snow Ninja that revolted happened in spite of your actions, not because of them. You got yourselves cornered and trapped several times playing to your enemy's tune. And when all was said and done, you were exhausted and unable to fend off Kakusu on your own at the end."

Finally, he got up and walked to a window looking out at it, folding his arms behind his back. "I suppose as your sensei, a significant portion of the blame does fall on me. Perhaps it would have been better for me to break cover despite the advantages. Perhaps I expected too much out you, perhaps I should have trained you all better than I did, had plans in place in case one of us did fall." He looked over his shoulder at them. "But even with that blame on me, that doesn't wash away your actions either. I'm your sensei, not your fall guy. In the end, you stand or fall by the actions you determine. And your actions could have been far better."

He looked back out the window. "So, when we get back to Konoha… we're going to start all over. Going back to the basics. Only this time, we're going to take the lessons of Snow to heart and mold ourselves better than ever. Of course, we'll be doing nothing but D-ranked missions for the foreseeable future, but that'll be the price we all have to pay."

"So, did we do anything right?" Sakura asked gruffly.

"Of course. The most important thing." Kakashi looked back at them, giving that smiling eye once more. "You're alive and you'll be going home in one piece. That being said, we probably won't be getting credit for this mission. As either an S or A-ranked one. But you can take heart in that you'll be compensated for your roles in the movie."

The three kids all let out a collective groan at that… until Naruto cracked his knuckles. "Well, if we failed it's because of your lousy training… so I say you owe us some payback, Baka-sensei."

Kakashi gave a chuckle and saw that his two teammates mirrored his sentiment. Sasuke activated his Sharingan while Sakura sported a very evil grin. The Jounin gave a playful shrug. "Not happening. You three get your rest." Deciding to tell them about Makino's status later, he turned around and headed for the door. As soon as he got there, he let out an irritated sigh.

For behind him rushed three would-be demons ready to beat the everloving stuffing out of him.

"FINE. HAVE IT YOUR WAY."

Outside the Infirmary

Several of the Capital's medical staff, along with members of Yukigakure's medical team, were exchanging notes on the Konoha-nin when they heard a loud smash coming from inside.

All present looked at the door hearing more sounds of punching, kicking and various statements such as 'I told you idiots to rest!' 'Forms are still sloppy!' 'You want to do hardball, fine, we'll do hardball!' 'No, THIS is unfair!'

The residents of Snow flinched constantly at each statement and sound of conflict before a LOUD crashing noise resounded, making them all reflexively wince in fear. Then silence. They all watched the door, wondering if anyone was brave enough to go in and check. It proved moot as the door opened up to reveal Konohagakure's Copy Ninja, clapping dust off his hands with a rather smug look about it.

"Perhaps I haven't given Gai enough credit. That was surprisingly therapeutic."

He walked away as the medical team watched him go, then cautiously looked back at the doorway and slowly made their ways inside.

"MEDICS!"

Late Evening

It took nearly the rest of the day for things to settle down between the visiting Konoha ninja, but they finally got it all out of their systems by dinnertime. It was amidst that meal that someone finally brought up the fact that not everyone had gotten through this ordeal unscathed.

Needless to say, the three Genin of Team 7 bolted during the middle of dinner as soon as they learned of what became of Makino.

The director was being tended to in another wing of the infirmary, reserved for more critical patients. It took some prompting, but they were allowed inside to see the man. They were warned it wasn't pretty.

Walking inside, the three found Makino on the bed surrounded by half a dozen personnel, with several machines hooked up to him. The man was a wreck. The covers reached up to his chest, but what was visible showed bandaged. Even then you could see signs of tormented flesh and various fractures. Of his legs, he was missing his right foot and his left had been amputated at the knee. His arms weren't much better. His left was completely encased in a cast, and while his right arm remained, it looked deflated and malnourished. His face was swollen and pale.

Sasuke was the first to speak. "When did this happen?"

Kaijo, who was sitting in the corner, answered. "Not long after you left. That Witch made things worse by the minute. So bad even some of the Yuki-nin sided with us against her."

Akufu appeared in Naruto's mind and he let out a hiss. "She's lucky I didn't get to her first." The one-eyed blond looked at Makino. "So he was an ex-shinobi all along?"

"Not that I'm aware of." The assistant director picked up a magazine as Kakashi finally caught up, leaning against a wall by the door next to the young man.

Sakura looked exasperated. "Enough already. You still expect us to believe what he said?"

"Who am I, you ask? Perhaps you're expecting some grand revelation. There is no great mystery, no special origins, no deep secret. I am who I've always been: Makino, director of the successful Princess Gale film series. I had parents like everyone, went to school, pursued a career. I have never had instruction from a shinobi and rarely interact with them."

"All I said was that he wasn't a shinobi," Kaijo answered. "I didn't say he couldn't fight."

The man turned a page. "There are other forms of martial arts, disciplines and techniques out there. Makino always kept himself fit. He liked to use that against the stuntmen: That if he could do all the physical stuff, there was no excuse for them to slack. He always said he would never ask them to perform a stunt he couldn't perform himself."

As he looked at his magazine, he continued. "But truth be told, he had another ability. We dubbed it 'Molding'."

"Molding?" several people asked, including the medical staff.

"Don't ask me where he learned it, maybe it was self-taught. I'm not even sure he uses chakra for it. But he can amplify or diminish an object's capabilities. A small whistle can suddenly sound like nails on a chalkboard. A lighter in the hand can flare up comparable to Katon-class ninjutsu. Grabbing an enemy's spear will suddenly reveal it was old and dull. I've seen him do some amazing things with seeds." He turned another page. "Pity it didn't do him any good, but that's life, I suppose. There's always someone stronger out there, or the strong just succumb to time."

The ninja present all looked at Makino in a new light, letting this all sink in. "I'm sure your pity is comforting," Sakura said in a soft voice. Kaijo was Makino's assistant. He could at least try and sound remorseful.

"That's an understatement," the head of the medical team commented as he looked at the old man. "Honestly, I'm surprised he's still breathing. Even if we didn't have to perform amputations, the damage to his legs was so severe he never would have walked again and that's even if there wasn't any spinal damage. His left arm is completely paralyzed and he'll have about half-functionality with his remaining arm, but he won't be able to do much more than point with it." He looked up from his clipboard. "You don't even want to know the damage to his chest area was like. He's going to need a mobile respirator to assist with his breathing."

Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke looked at the man. All that and the man was still breathing? He was tougher than they imagined. "His passion for movies was admirable if nothing else."

"He knew how to go with the flow and when to stick to your strengths," Sakura agreed. "Not many directors understand that difference."

"The world of cinema will be less without him," Sasuke agreed.

"Who said he was retiring?" Kaijo spoke up from his magazine.

The teenagers looked at him with understandably confused looks on their faces… then they heard an all too familiar chuckling from behind them. As one, they looked at the source.

"Touching, very touching," Makino said with a laugh. He raised his sole remaining hand and patted the side of his bed in a form of applause. "FINALLY, you three are getting into the spirit of the movies! But really, for my deathbed scene, you could put more oomph into it. Turn on the waterworks and let them flow." Naruto flinched in annoyance. "Use the opportunity to let your emotions and passions soar like never before!"

"EXCUSE ME!?" Sakura yelled, going red-faced. Did he really suggest what she THOUGHT he did?

"So, don't hold back now! We've got to get this all on film!"

"FILM?" Sasuke didn't want to believe it, but Kaijo casually pointed to another corner of the room. All heads immediately looked in that direction.

And sure enough, there was a camera rolling.

"I TAKE BACK ANY NICE THING I SAID ABOUT YOU, OLD COOT!"

"EVEN HERE!? THIS ISN'T WHAT I MEANT!"

"I'M FINISHING WHAT THAT WITCH STARTED!"

Immediately the medical staff had to restrain the Genin from seeking retribution upon the old director, who was continuing to spit out advice and direction, clearly enjoying every moment of it.

"Well, it doesn't look like Makino's going to croak anytime soon," Kakashi said dryly.

"If they thought mere injures would stop Makino from making another movie, they obviously don't know him as well as they should," Kaijo agreed, turning another page.

The Next Day, just before sunrise

Winter can be many things. It can be utterly relentless and other times it can be as serene as a cloud. Today was beginning as the former. Snow had fallen throughout the night, covering the area in a new white blanket. Clean and undisturbed. And here at the Capital of Snow, it was no different.

When Doto had first fallen and Koyuki gained the allegiance of the Loyalist faction of Yukigakure, she had dispatched members to the village proper. The fact that both a loyalist and 'rebel' had gone, working together for the new Daimyo-to-be had been a powerful message, prompting the entire village to accept the new state of being… as sudden as those changes were.

All the same, the Yukigakure shinobi proved their worth, going to all four corners of their country and delivering the news. To say it was shocking would be downplaying the revelation; they were in disbelief that Doto could have fallen so quickly and largely due to foreign aid. Never mind the fact that the princess, who many doubted was ever born to begin with, was actually alive. Those of the older generations remembered the last time this happened nearly ten years ago when Doto took power and feared if all that chaos would come again.

Assurances from a unified front that was Yukigakure ended up being a powerful motivator to get the masses to believe that this change had far more goodwill to it. Unlike last time, there would be no infighting among its shinobi populace, no 'rogue' members running around to bring down the current regime.

In alignment with the new times, the remains of Black Fang Castle had been abandoned. The surviving staff moved out onto other locations. Discussions were made on either to have the new Daimyo take residence in their nation's proper capital as per tradition, or establish her own separate location as her uncle had done. The Hell Asylum would likewise be fully decommissioned, with its dead laid to proper rest rather than on display.

So, while Team 7 ended up spending yesterday resting up and recovering from their ordeal, the Yuki-nin were already arranging transportation and assembly of the general public to the capital. Public transit systems began working overtime. While Doto's train had been demolished, there were a few lesser prototype versions that helped gather those from the outskirts of the country.

For those that couldn't make the trip, televised broadcasts were being set up in every major city and town, reducing travel time.

As a result of the efforts of the ninja, by the next day (that being today), the entire country was watching in anticipation. Ten thousand had been gathered at their nation's capital. Scores of Yuki-Nin stood in attendance as an honor guard, no longer divided by their loyalties. And given how they composed themselves, one wouldn't be able to tell who had supported Doto and who hadn't. Representatives of Snow's twenty-three local feudal lords were also presented with their respective entourages. Ranks of samurai guards, many of whom just defended Doto not two days past, stood in attendance as they always did.

Finally, a flock of doves was released, flying out of the central building towards the skies, dropping confetti into the waiting crowd. At last the doors opened up. Two Yuki-nin emerged first, standing beside either door and immediately bowing in respect.

Then Koyuki came out herself. She was dressed in the attire fitting her new life; a light lavender kimono with purple trim around the sleeves and the bottom. On top of that she sported a red vest with intricate golden designs upon them. Around her neck was a replica of the Hex Crystal, the original lost with the Glacier. Hidden from view were golden sandals of her late mother.

Following her out were five people. The first was the Secretary of State, the same man who had held the office through both Sousetsu and Doto's reigns. Behind him were four maidens, carrying a large pink and white round headpiece with purple tags hanging from it.

As the Secretary of State came forward, he stopped at Koyuki's side as she turned to him. Next she knelt on her knees towards him as he raised a silver scepter. In a loud voice, he proclaimed the following.

"By the right of the Cabinet." The scepter touched gently upon Koyuki's right shoulder. "By the Will of the People." The scepter now touched her left shoulder. "Rise, Kazahana Koyuki-sama."

She did as bidden, turning to the people as the Secretary of State moved off and the four maidens came forward, putting the headdress upon Koyuki's head. "Daimyo of the Snow Country!"

Immediately cheers and applause shook the area. The samurai guards from all their positions held up their weapons in a salute. Banners of the Kazahana Clan were raised upon the spectators. The Yuki-Nin began firing off ninjutsu into the sky, resulting in explosive fireworks.

Koyuki took a moment to just bask in what was happening, but there was no doubt, no hesitation in her mind. Her past was behind her, her inner demons laid to rest. She felt cleansed, ready to take on the new challenges. As her eyes gazed forward, she gave a slight jerk.

In the crowd, she saw her father, mother, and Sandayuu smiling at her.

Koyuki blinked in surprise, but once she looked again, they were gone. For a moment, she just stood there in disbelief, then a smile slowly took its place as she clasped the crystal around her neck.

Father. Despite what Doto claimed, all she remembered was the loving man who filled her with warmth. That had inspired her to be the person she was now.

Mother. She may have passed away when she was so young, but her inspirations and legacy beat within Koyuki all the same.

Sandayuu. Tragic it was that he was slain before even coming to this country, yet the years he spent with her prior were precious memories to her.

"Believe in the future."

Koyuki gave another, smaller flinch this time as those words sprang to mind, from what seemed a lifetime ago.

"If you do, then the Spring will surely come. What will you do when it comes, Koyuki?"

She could practically envision her younger self as the next words came. "I'm going to become… a princess!"

Her father appeared in her mind's eye next, as kind and happy as ever. "Oh, and what sort of princess?"

"Hmm… let's see… one who's strong… and is kind…and most of all, one who fights for Justice!"

Her father gave a laugh, commenting how that was some dream. Present Day Koyuki could only wonder if she really said that.

"Well, so long as you believe in your dream and never give up, one day you'll be that princess. You can see it, can't you? There's a beautiful princess standing right there."

"But…" the younger version of her spoke up, a bit somber. "I have sort of a problem."

Koyuki's mouth dropped a bit. What?

"There's something else I want to be."

"Really? What's that?"

"An actress!"

Sounds of music pulled Koyuki out of her recollections as she stared at the people around her. That smile came back to her face.

Perhaps this wasn't the kind of spring her father intended. It was still snowy all around, everywhere. Yet, what had come instead? Such an incredible warmth with new hope and prosperity? Perhaps… perhaps that would work just as well. Koyuki would see it work.

Holding out her hand, one of the maidens handed her an item as she walked back inside with her entourage.

Ten minutes prior

Inside the building, the Leaf ninja and those of the movie crew watched as Koyuki's procession made their final preparations. The three Genin were still bandaged up considerably, but were well on their way to recovery. The Jounin merely leaned against the wall as he typically did. Several Yuki-nin that they had encountered from before were with them. Kiganai, Ikusa, Kiou, Homare and Taigi. The film crew were spread out, cameras rolling naturally. Makino, Kaijo, and the actors, Ken, Hidero and Michy. The director was in a wheel chair, completely determined NOT to miss this.

"It's really happening," Sakura said as she watched the maidens dress up the star actress. "Honestly, I wasn't sure she would do it."

"The lot of you managed to inspire her," Michy agreed, flashing that award-winning smile again (though this time, he made sure the Uchiha Avenger wasn't looking at them). Sakura smiled back but found herself not blushing in glee as she had done before.

"So, do you think it'll really work out? She's been an actress for the last ten years. That's quite different than being a Daimyo," Sakura spoke up, running her bandaged hand through her hair.

"She'll do what she does best," Michy assured her. "She'll act her way through it. Time will tell if she can pull it off, but I've seen how she works. There's no doubt in my mind she'll be a wonderful Daimyo… and maybe a little more."

Sakura gave him a look. Was he implying what it sounded like? Seeing her look, he gave a laugh. "Oh, you look so much like her."

"Huh? Koyuki?" Where'd that come from?

He shook his head. "No. My late sister. Especially with the eyes."

Sakura got an oddly foreboding feeling about this.

"I was five when she was born. And I went through the usual syndromes. Newborn getting all the attention, being jealous of her." His voice was hollow, his eyes closed at the memory. "Then when she was a year old, I was told to watch her… I should have been watching her… it was an accident in the end, everyone agreed."

He cut off right there, and Sakura was personally grateful. This was one tale she didn't want all the details on. "I'm sorry to hear that," she offered as she looked at the movie director and the other actors around him. "Seems everyone here has their own dark secrets."

She remembered Ken's admission to being a spy back when he was in service to the Daimyo. And of course, Koyuki. She looked back at him. "That's not a coincidence, is it, Michy?"

He gave a hollow laugh, perhaps glad to be distracted. "No, I don't believe it is. Hidero lost the love of his life. You heard a bit on Ken. Koyuki, of course, is the whole reason we're here." Michy glanced to the side. "Though only the Gods know what terrible secret Kaijo is hiding."

Sakura reflected on this for a bit. "Makino sure has a talent for finding everyone." So many with a dark secret, so many with something they were ashamed of in the past. "Does that extend to - ?"

"The camera crews, props department, make up?" Michy picked up and gave a nod. "Yes, Makino has all of us under his wing. Giving us a chance to move on with our lives, so our pasts don't consume us. And yet…"

The kunoichi gave him a curious look.

"And yet… if you look into his past, you'll find nothing. We've been all over this continent, many villages and cities. Over the last thirty years with his movie career, certainly. But anything before that? Hometown, birth record, friends, family… you'll find nothing of Makino the Director. Let alone where he picked up his amazing skills. Both for cinema and for fighting."

Sakura couldn't help but smile to herself. No big revelation, huh? She knew there was more to the old man than he was willing to admit. "So, he's got some secret hidden out there. "

Michy gave a slight chuckle. "If we're right… it's not out there, but over there." He was pointing to a window, facing out towards the east. Sakura remembered from the map that there was a coast about half a day's direction.

"People say that there's an entirely new land across the ocean, beyond even the Water Country. Lands filled with unique people, exotic cultures and amazing displays of architecture. I think that's the most likely answer… and why Makino was willing to venture into such a dangerous mission with a fugitive and a handful of ninja.

"Perhaps he was simply answering the call of home."

Naruto

The blond Genin was watching with glee as Koyuki was being prepared. She had been the most ungrateful of bitches at times, but after going through all this, there was something immensely satisfying about seeing her overcome her past and move to a much brighter - if still colder - future. "You know," he called out to her, drawing their eyes to him. "Making good with the future Hokage wouldn't be a bad move, Daimyo-dono."

Koyuki gave a quick laugh at that. "Consider this a down payment then, Hokage-sama." There was a flick of her wrist as something came flying right at him, to which he caught.

It was an envelope with the royal seal of Snow on it. Opening it, Naruto found there were several things inside of it. The first was a picture of when he was still asleep back in the medical ward. Sasuke and Sakura were off to the left side, while Koyuki herself was to his right, leaning over and giving him a quick peck on his on it was the following:

To the Greatest of Ninja and his friends: May your future be as bright as the one you gave me. Snow will never forget.

"At least you got my good side," Naruto said, looking over the other articles inside.

"Hmm… I bet the Hyuga Heiress is going to be devastated." The Uzumaki flinched badly at that before looking at the offender. Of course it would be Sasuke! Who else would be better to ruin his grand moment here!?

"Oh, come on, Hinata wouldn't be so - " Naruto cut off as he looked at the picture again, especially Koyuki's action in it. He held it closer, his eye looking it over anew. Now that looked at it… "Do you really think so?" he asked in a softer, more worried tone.

"I wouldn't worry too much." It was Sakura this time, coming over from whatever it was she had been doing prior. "She knows you better than that." She crossed her arms and gave a playful smile. "So you might want to consider - !"

Naruto immediately put his fingers into his ears and boldly declared 'I'M NOT LISTENING, I'M NOT LISTENING!' in a musical voice. Koyuki gave a loud laugh as her procession began moving out for the formal ceremony.

"How we lost to you three is a mystery I'll never understand." It was the Snow Shinobi they had encountered during this mission, with Kiganai having been the one that spoke. The five of them were lined up next to one another, though Ikusa and Homare looked the most amused. "Always butting heads as much as you were kicking ass."

Oh, what was it with people ruining his good mood now?! Naruto was about to give those Yuki-nin a piece of his mind (and possibly an ass kicking to go with it) when all five of them gave a formal bow in their direction.

"On behalf of Yukigakure, we would like to express our sincerest apologies for the hassles." They said altogether. "And hope we can establish better relations with the Hidden Leaf Village."

"Well, well, well," Kakashi said from his position. "That's not something you get every day."

Sakura just looked on in shock, while Sasuke was looking them all over, clearly expecting some sort of catch. Naruto? Naruto was just wearing a goofy grin on his face and eating this up. "Well, if you're going to twist my arm around!" He beamed, standing tall and proud as he waved them off. "I suppose I can let you off with just a warning given you FINALLY recognize how awesome I am!" Naruto nodded happily several times. "I know several people who would learn from your example!"

Sakura and Sasuke were about to let Naruto know how they felt about his 'awesomeness' with their fists when several items came flying at them, prompting each of them to catch them.

Sasuke looked at his. It was a sword in a sheath. Pulling it out, he saw it was Taigi's own chokuto.

"That one won't break on you so easily, Uchiha," Taigi spoke up from his position. "I guarantee it."

Sakura examined the item in her hand. It was that long metal staff from the battle at the train. "It'll serve you well, Sakura-san," Ikusa promised.

Naruto looked at the item in his right hand. It was a small box. Opening it up revealed to be some sort of large compass.

"That'll guide you to Yukigakure itself," Kiou said this time. "It's the only way to navigate through its protective storms."

Naruto sent an ugly look to the side. Why do they get the awesome weapons and I get some toy!?

Kakashi came over before Naruto could actually voice what was on his mind as he gave a bow in return. "On behalf of Konohagakure, we humbly accept your gifts and likewise look forward to mutual cooperation in the future."

Seeing that was enough to change Naruto's mood again. After all, Baka-sensei didn't get anything! Ha, that'll teach him to play dead on a mission! "Must suck right now, right, sensei!?" he drew out. He was going to enjoy this.

The Jounin just gave a laugh followed by a helpless shrug when they all heard the words spoken by the Secretary of State. They watched as Koyuki was formally declared the country's Daimyo.

"Her reign will be a long and prosperous one. The Shinobi of the Snow will see to it," Homare declared.

"See that you do," Naruto replied as Koyuki came back in. Immediately everyone inside, Fire and Snow resident alike, gave a bow in respect.

"No, no, no. Not here. Not for you," Koyuki waved them off, gesturing the Leaf Ninja to stand back up. "Your public awaits." She gestured towards the doors she came out of.

"Huh?" Even Kakashi seemed to be lost at that.

"Before the official festivities start, I want Snow to recognize just who brought Spring to their land," Koyuki said with a smile.

Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke couldn't believe their ears. Almost absentmindedly, they looked at Kakashi who gave a lazy shrug and beckoned them go on forward.

Smiling, Koyuki turned and headed out first, but not before they saw a certain book in her arms. Kakashi stopped dead cold, his visible eye wide with shock. "That's… that's…!"

Koyuki paused, looking down at the book in question and gave a smile. "You didn't seriously expect me to give up being an actress, did you? This is for the next film I intend to star in." Beckoning them to follow once more, she walked back out to the balcony.

"She's… she's… perfect…" Kakashi uttered, feebly pointing in the actress' direction. "I may have just received the best gift of all…"

Tempting as it was to ruin Kakashi's good mood, Uzumaki Naruto, Haruno Sakura and Uchiha Sasuke walked forward behind the Daimyo. It may have been a hard journey here, but the end results were proving oh-so-worthwhile.

Koyuki

Emerging anew onto the balcony, the cheers settled down as she raised a hand to address her people. "Citizens of Snow! Servants of the land, soldiers of the people, ninja of the country!" She gestured back towards the doors.

"Allow me to present my heroes!"

The crowd had snippets and hearsay on what had happened and now they were eager to see just who these Leaf Ninja were who changed things!

Ten seconds passed. Then thirty. Then a full minute. Those around Koyuki looked confused as they rushed in to see what the holdup was.

Inside there was no one but Yuki-Nin.

Everyone looked around questioningly. Where did the Leaf Ninja go?

Elsewhere

Several puffs of smoke appeared and from it emerged four very bewildered members of Konohagakure's shinobi force.

"Welcome back, Team 7. Job well done."

The speaker was none other than the Hokage herself. Looking around, Team 7 found they were back in her office in the village itself. Three disbelieving looks immediately focused on the Sannin member.

"Ah, yes." Tsunade gestured to a scroll to her right. "A variation of reverse summoning. It's what I had you sign at the beginning of the mission."

High-ranking missions often carried natures of immediate risk or harm. As such, Tsunade was putting in the practice of outgoing teams signing up on transportation scrolls so if the need came up, she could immediately call them back to the Village.

"Since I got Kakashi's update yesterday, I decided to go ahead and recall you..." She stopped, seeing the anguished look on the three youngsters.

"Did I pick a bad time?"

An hour later

It took nearly fifteen minutes to calm down the three Genin and when Tsunade realized she had yanked them out of a big celebration, she gave an apology and dispatched them to Konoha's hospital to finish up their treatments. As such, it fell to Kakashi to give her a full briefing.

He spared no detail, giving everything that had transpired. From their time at the movie to meeting the group, to the boat ride, and Kakashi's self-appointed disappearing act. He told her of the adventures and encounters while at the Snow Country to the chaos at Doto's palace and wrapping up with Koyuki's coronation.

Tsunade leaned back in her chair once the Copy Ninja finished up. "Seems my luck never changes." To think she pulled them away right when they were going to get a celebration in their honor. 'Oops' didn't carry nearly enough weight.

"It might be for the best," Kakashi said from his position opposite of her. "Recognition is admirable, but this probably would've inflated their egos too much for their own good."

Tsunade gave something close to a snort. "Considering everything they went through, including your antics, I'd say a little celebration is well deserved." She folded her hands on her desk. "Don't you think you came down a little too hard on them? Even if they did fail the actual mission, we gained a lot from it. Doto has been a thorn in the sides of many for a decade now. Thanks to the change of government on their behalf, we have a chance to make a fresh start with Snow." Reaching into her desk, she opened a drawer and took out a bingo book. "Not to mention the prices on Doto and his top supporters especially in Mist. We can generate some good will with Kirigakure on top of all this."

"Harsh, perhaps, but necessary," Kakashi replied evenly. "Being told their shortcomings after such a mission will allow them to appreciate their line of work and commitments to the goal on hand. Take Sasuke's little departure not even two weeks ago. Not only have they grown past that obstacle, but they've resolved many of the conflicts between them." He gave a proud look. "To the point I can say with absolute confidence that Sakura, Naruto and myself have deemed Uchiha Sasuke fit to regain his prior privileges."

An amused look came over the Hokage's face. "Oh, I don't know, I think those two would rather hold that over his head for a while longer." She put the bingo book down on her desk. "Still, all the potential benefits aside, Kakashi, you took a big risk by letting your squad handle a mission this dangerous on their own."

The Jounin didn't so much as blink. "Life's lessons aren't learned in a classroom, Hokage-sama. Or in that of a safe environment. The most important lessons come when you are put against a wall; that's when the true merits of your character will shine or fall. That of a leader or a follower. Cowardice or courage. Temptation and persistence. I believed those three were strong enough to overcome whatever Doto could throw at them and come out on top." A hint of a pride appeared on his face. "I still believe that."

"Does that belief extend to not bringing back Orochimaru's agent?" Tsunade brought up. "That was a valuable source of intel we could have used."

"The thought occurred to me," Kakashi conceded. "In the end, I believed it wasn't feasible. There was a change in government going on, three young shinobi needing treatment and dealing with the movie crew." There was a slight pause before he added "And to be perfectly honest, we're in no position to do anything about Orochimaru right now. By the time we would be, Kakusu's information would be out of date."

This time Tsunade rolled her eyes. "You have an answer for everything, don't you?"

"I was hardly idle during all that time," Kakashi reminded her. "I was still there, and I was still present, actively contributing behind the scenes. To the point I was able to bring them home, alive and well, if with fractured pride."

"A curious way of putting it." Tsunade gave him a hard look. "But what if the worst had happened, a repeat of your own team?"

A sore subject deliberately, but not because she enjoyed it. It was because of its nature. But to her surprise, the man simply stood as firm as he had. "We're shinobi, Hokage-sama. If you're looking for reassurances due to the nature of our profession, I'm afraid you're in the wrong line of work."

Tsunade gave a twitch of annoyance at that as she took a moment to compose herself. "And you're sure this is how you want it all to go down, with this mission as a failure? That'll affect your record as well, Kakashi."

"Yes, ma'am."

Another moment passed before an elongated sigh escaped the Hokage. "Very well." She took out another paper and began writing on it. "The mission will be logged as a failure and reflected accordingly on all four of you, though I am updating the parameters to verify it as an S Rank over the A Rank and noting the benefits we'll be able to extend towards both the Snow Country and Water Country."

Kakashi gave a bow. "Thank you, Hokage-sama. This will be the start of a new direction for Team 7. I'm actually getting anxious on what I can throw at them next."

"That's going to be difficult considering Team 7 is disbanded as of today."

The atmosphere changed immediately and this time Kakashi was visibly disturbed. "Hokage-sama... if you're disbanding them just because I - "

The Hokage cut him off. "Oh, believe me, I've got a lot of issues on your stunt on both professional and ethical grounds. But no, that's not the reason. Jiraiya's returned."

Kakashi's visible eye narrowed a bit, realizing where this was going.

"According to his information, Akatsuki is entering their final stage of preparation, a task that will take about three years before they're ready to act. As such, I'm instigating our own precautions while we rebuild our manpower. Since two members of your team are targets, splitting them up is essential."

"We don't have to split up for that," Kakashi attempted. "We can go on more long-distance missions to keep our - "

Again, Tsunade cut him off with a sharp 'no.' "You just made a big case on how much your team has grown over this mission, Kakashi, and despite your methods in it, I agree. As you likewise pointed out, we're short on manpower, so we have to maximize the potential of our personnel until we do fully recover.

"Naruto will be going with Jiraiya. He'll be on the move far more constantly than your Team would have been... and I imagine Naruto will be eager for the opportunity to expand his knowledge and create more of those jutsu of his.

"Sakura is already enrolled in my CLS classes, so that will keep her more than occupied. I'm confident she'll sign up for the more advanced classes once I get them ready.

"Sasuke, I'm going to train personally. And before you ask, no, it's not because of his actions, but simple necessity. He needs to get stronger, both in skills and his commitment. As the last Uchiha in the village, that's an asset I'd rather not lose... never mind the fact that he's a brilliant young man with a future ahead of him.

"As for you, I'm going to need you to return to the ANBU, Kakashi. I can't have someone of your caliber just playing teacher. Not while we're in the state we're in. Give us a few years and we'll revisit the prospect of you having your own team again, but the time as Team 7 is over."

"No."

That one word prompted a very prompt glare in Kakashi's direction. "What did you just say to me, Hatake?"

"I said 'No.'" Kakashi reaffirmed.

Tsunade slammed her hands on her desk as she rose from her chair to her full height. As leader on the field, his opinion carried the most weight on the success or failure of the unit. That was just protocol there. But direct defiance right to her face? Oh, that was nothing of the sort. "You're treading on thin ice, Jounin."

Kakashi's stance lessen a bit, more out of a sign of respect rather than insubordination. "With all due respect, Hokage-sama, this is a bad idea. The three of them just worked out all their internal issues with each other and finally started acting as a group. You split them up now, that's going to undermine everything they've accomplished now. I can handle it."

"No, Kakashi, you can't." He wanted to be blunt, fine. Two could play at that game. "You're good, but you're not that good. Despite your threat to Orochimaru, you don't actually have the skills to carry it out. Never mind the Akatsuki. You're too weak."

The man jerked as if she slapped him in the face as his posture was weakening as a result. "Then at least assign them someone else, take them all personally if you must. Just let them stay as a group."

"Time and means don't allow us to do that," Tsunade countered as she crossed her arms. "Naruto and Sasuke are going to be targeted in the future because of who they are, so they'll need to toughen up quickly and in short order. And I doubt Sakura will be willing to be left behind when the time comes. That's what they need, and it's more than you can give them, Hatake."

The man just stood there, his head glanced downward. For a moment, Tsunade actually thought he was going to break down right there. At least until her eyesight caught his right hand.

And how lightning began emerging.

"Don't even think about it," Tsunade cautioned. Her voice was still even, but the iron in it just went in. "I can have more than just your rank for that, I can have your headband. Think about your next actions very carefully, Hatake Kakashi. What's best for your team knowing the situation and not just your own wants. And more to the point, if it came to a fight between us... I would chew you up, spit you out, and leave whatever's left to linger on the ground begging for scraps."

While just a moment passed, it felt like an hour as the two locked gazes. Then Kakashi moved, bowing even lower than he had prior. "I apologize for my actions, Hokage-sama. I was out of line and will accept whatever you deem appropriate."

The corners of her mouth moved upward a bit. "Better."

"But I stand firm on my view. Breaking them up now is a terrible mistake. Punish me as you deem fit, but I will not back down from this."

And there went her good mood. Though this time annoyance was setting in rather than outrage as she rubbed her temples. "What a pain in the ass. I think I liked you better with your lateness than your stubbornness here." She blew out hard. "Alright, I'll give you a compromise on both our parts."

While Kakashi didn't raise up from his bow, she could tell he was listening very intently.

"I'll let you keep Sasuke as your own personal apprentice." She held up three fingers. "Three years. That's how long you have. During that time, I want you to mold Sasuke into an ideal shinobi. Committed, understanding, strong. One worthy of being the future Head of his clan and all the responsibility that comes with it. If after three years, you succeed in Sasuke becoming a Jounin worthy of this village, I will allow the three of them to form a team under him.

"But that means your time with them is done. Permanently. Team 7 will continue on without you." She gave him a very sharp gaze as she spoke the next words. "I suggest you don't push me further, Hatake."

Ten seconds passed as Kakashi stood up. Every inch of him was standing up professional now.

But Tsunade wasn't fooled. Despite the stance, she knew he was still livid on the inside. But at least now, he was composing and acting properly regardless of how he actually felt. "Hai, Hokage-sama."

"Don't think this means you're off the hook either," She warned him. "It's not just Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke that will need to improve over the next few years. If you truly intend to stand up to the likes of Orochimaru and Itachi, you best hit that grindstone yourself during the next few years. Especially that stamina problem you have. Go gather your team and let them know. You're dismissed."

Kakashi merely echoed his prior words, gave another respectful bow and departed the office.

Day of Departure 9:30 AM; Training Field

Sakura was breathing heavily as she faced Tenten. Their clothes were damp with sweat and their stances were slouching. Both were barefoot.

The other three members of Team Gai were watching on the sidelines as the two kunoichi started up again.

"Alright, Sakura. If you're serious about going forward like this, then you need to back it up. I'm not saying that to be rude or cold; just the honest truth. You want to stand by me and all that entails, you need to be able to protect yourself. We end up going steady like you want, people from all over are going to test you. The others in the village, those from other villages and countries, you name it. The Uchiha name demands it, and if you want to associate yourself with it, then you better be able to meet those demands."

So that's how she ended up doing sparring with Rock Lee's team. It had been going on for an hour straight right now, with only periodic breaks for Gai to correct their forms, or for him to quiz Neji and Lee on their observations.

"And since you know the Mangekyou's little secret... that includes being able to defend yourself against me, should the worst happen."

So, she made her choice. She had heard of Gai's unique style to counter the Sharingan by watching an opponent's feet, avoiding eye contact. And of his three students, Tenten was more accomplished at it then either Lee or even Neji. So, by sparring with Tenten, she could practice with an opponent at her level... and watch someone experienced utilizing it.

Which, unfortunately for Sakura, meant getting her ass handed to her constantly.

Wiping the sweat off her face for what had to have been the hundredth time, she focused down on Tenten's feet again, watching. The right one pressed into the grass a bit more, then the two kunoichi were at it again, throwing a series of punches and kicks.

She was going to stand by Sasuke's side no matter what it took and make sure he didn't falter again. Though thanks to her new training regimen, she was unsure if she would be able to keep up with the CLS classes. Maybe applying full time in Tsunade-sama's new medical school wasn't such a good idea... but it seemed like it two weeks ago!

Before all the stuff at Snow happened...

That train of thought was opening enough for Tenten's fist to once again land squarely against her left cheek and send her plummeting back to the ground.

A separate training field

Uchiha Sasuke stood in the field, his shirt off, exposing his upper torso to the world as a light breeze blew across them. Around him were a number of ANBU, two of which were standing in the trees with their arms crossed. They weren't here to monitor Sasuke or even act as possible protection. No, they were here as part of a request of the returning member to their organization.

Standing directly across from Sasuke was another ANBU member who held his katana parallel to the ground. "Let's go, Uchiha. We don't have time to play with you all day. You want us to stay? Earn it."

Holding up the chokuto, Sasuke took a swing with the blade and resumed his stance. The ANBU before him was the village's best swordsman bar none. Since the focus was to hone his swordsmanship, Sasuke was prohibited from using anything else, especially his Sharingan (though Sasuke doubted it would help him against his opponent). The other ANBU had come mostly due to curiosity... and to have some fun.

Standing to the side, one of the ANBU muttered, "He'll win in three strokes."

The other ANBU considered, then uttered "Five."

The two opponents faced each other. Sasuke launched himself first, swinging down on his opponent's blade, then a quick swipe upward. His instructor parried the blow easily, then brought his blade down to block Sasuke's next strike. Not wanting to give him an opening, Sasuke struck twice in rapid succession, going from the chest back to the face.

Almost bored, the ANBU slapped Sasuke's first thrust away, then took advantage of the second by smacking him with the blunt side of his katana to Sasuke's rib cage, shifted around and delivered a second smack to Sasuke's back for good measure.

The second ANBU reached into his pouch, pulled out some ryo and slapped it into the first one's hand. Oh yes, most fun!

Konoha, market district

Kakashi stood inside a large building. He was at the Weapons portion of the district, currently in the back of the shop with the forge itself. He stood watching as the master blacksmith heated up the forge again. He then held up the broken pieces of a tanto.

His father's tanto, for which he earned the name White Fang.

Tsunade's words still rang in his mind, especially regarding how weak he was in comparison to the enemy. As much as it stung, Kakashi had to admit she was spot on in her assessment. He was still shocked on how she brought up what happened with his own team… and how he managed to keep his composure all the same.

Perhaps it hadn't been just the Genin who had grown during this mission to the Snow Country.

The fire danced in his visible eye as he watched the blacksmith bring down his hammer again and again. The red hot metal of the weapon began molding together with each strike, slowly becoming whole once again.

Very well. He would do exactly what Tsunade had ordered and hone his own skills. He would accomplish the techniques even his father had been unable to master fully despite his incredible skill.

When Akatsuki and Orochimaru made their move… he would be ready.

Otogakure

Kiryoku's latest horrific screams were heard throughout the entire complex, bringing a true grin to Orochimaru's face. Ah yes, it seemed his apprentice had discovered his latest surprise. He was about to go rub it in the boy's face when he heard heavy wheezing from behind him.

Coming in through the doorway was Bakeru. He was a wreck, half crawling, half dragging himself to his master's feet. He was coughing up blood with every movement while his body was in a constant state of flux, morphing and changing body parts to keep some degree of functionality. "Copy... Nin... get him..." he uttered in between breaths as he looked up. Seeing his master, he finally gave in and collapsed entirely at Orochimaru's feet.

So Bakeru had failed. Pity. He was tempted to dispatch the fool when Orochimaru noticed his outstretched hand was clamped into a fist. Bending down, he examined it.

Hair. Most likely Uchiha Sasuke's.

"I asked you to bring him, not a part of him." Orochimaru chuckled at his own joke as he took the hair. No doubt Bakeru was implying the project to make up for his failure. And while Orochimaru had toyed with it, he had still hoped to get the genuine article... but perhaps it was time to give that project serious consideration. He opened up Bakeru's hand and channeled some chakra.

Sure enough, the Memory Seal appeared in response, glowing. As expected, it had been used. A sly grin appeared on the man's face. This may have been a blessing in disguise. While Bakeru was unable to forget memories he copied... that didn't mean those memories couldn't be removed and stored elsewhere.

Sasuke's DNA, plus his memories at his disposal. This could turn out to be more fortunate than Sasuke himself.

"Kabuto," Orochimaru called out as the medical ninja appeared shortly after.

"We're going to bring the project after all. Be sure to use-" He pointed down at Bakeru's silent form. "This as a starting basis."

Outside of Konoha

Seeing the village fade further and further with the distance, the one-eyed blond gave a cheeky grin as he reached into his pack, pulling out the envelope Koyuki had given him. Ero-Sannin was already stating where they were going first, to which Naruto was sure there was a hot spring or some other prime peeping area there, so before he could finish, Naruto made a seal and uttered the words.

Hearing the puff of a transformation, Jiraiya looked around... and immediately saw his perfect beauty in all her radiant glory! She got close, stroking his chin. "That sounds great, Jiraiya-sama, but can we make a tiny little detour first? Just for me? Pretty please?"

Jiraiya couldn't agree fast enough!

Elsewhere

The children were playing happily in the fields, tossing a ball from one to the other, faster and faster with each pass. One of them missed their pass, so she ran to get it. Finding it a bit into the forest, she picked it up and noticed something on a rock. It was an envelope.

Calling her friends over, they all gathered around as she opened it up.

Inside was a series of autographs, signed by Fujikaze Yukie.

"Even a Princess needs to remember to smile. So thank you for that and be sure to share those smiles with each other."

Memories popped back into all their minds and immediately they were all yelling and jumping with joy as they passed the autographs around to each other.

A happy ending all around.

For now.

OMAKE - Cheap Shot!

"But if you had been with us in the first place, we wouldn't have been in trouble!"

Kakashi held up the DVD copy of Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow. "Actually, according to the movie, even with me present, both Naruto and Koyuki would still have been captured, so you were losing her either way."

The three Genin flinched hard. CHEAP SHOT!

(Author's Notes)

Whew, what a ride. And that's it. The end. Once again, thanks to all that stood by this story over these years. So some closing thoughts on my end.

Now I imagine the denouncement of Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke's efforts may seem a little harsh in spite of all they did achieve, but the idea behind it was to show they still have a long ways to grow. While they certainly solved a lot of personal issues between them in this story, that doesn't mean there aren't other problems they have to sort out, or growth in their tasks as shinobi. I kept this plotline in my back pocket to show that ultimately our three heroes didn't get everything solved in this story, but rather set the stage for when they can ultimately work together as a team for what lies ahead in Chuuten. It may be a bit harsh, but if you ask me, better to learn that now than later when Akatsuki starts tearing the world apart.

That being said, I do encourage any who feel Kakashi was too harsh and/or narrow minded to go back to the previous chapters (9 onward) and reexamin Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke's actions, especially in regards to Koyuki herself.

Makino is... crippled now, to put it nicely. This was the way out I had in mind to allow him to survive his encounter with Akufu. Alive, yes. Fully healed and able again? Hell no. Not that it makes a difference as he's still energetic and sporadic as always.

Fun tidbit: When I was about 70 percent done with this chapter, my laptop decided to crash. Fortunately, I managed to back up my chapter before then, but it came really close to losing all that progress. Not a fun time. I ended up having to write the last third on notepad and then transcribing it later when my laptop got fixed. So it was a challenge in several ways to complete this chapter.

And now we can officially close the book on this chapter of the Legacy Series. I might one day put up a short story of the movie version and just how that came out. Likewise, going to be hard to say goodbye to all the original aspects here. Bakeru, the various Snow Ninja. Even Doto to an extent. Will we see any follows up in Chuuten? Eh, who knows. I'm sure Tellemicus and I will have fun discussing it either way.

And an extra big thanks to Paintball-Gamer, who stuck with me through all this with all his editing, insights and observations to the materal. Thanks pal, and hope to keep it up in the future!

Speaking of which, he has submitted his own omake, so head on over to the next 'chapter' and check it out. You'll probably burst a gut from laughing so hard at it. I know I did!

Sasaina - petty

I do not own Naruto. It belongs to Masashi Kishimoto. Also, any jutsu that Tellemicus created that are used in this story belong to him. Big thanks to Paintball-Gamer for beta reading this!
