Breakfast with Alice and Tanya was awkward. They talked and smiled brightly. It was fake and for once I wasn't the only one who noticed it.
"This is weird," Dad mumbled to me between sips of coffee as two carried on as if they had been invited over. I nodded as Edward sat on the counter top across from us, watching every move they made. He was suspicious and rightly so after Alice's proclamation that I was a dead woman walking.
After what seemed to be forever Dad excused himself by saying he had to get dressed to go into work. He was lying, but at this point it was every man for themselves to get away from Tanya and Alice.
After Dad was gone I waited while Tanya chattered on as she cleaned the kitchen. Her happy nonsense was enough to set me on edge.
"I appreciate the breakfast. It was delicious, but I don't want to be friends with Alice, I never want to be family and if I die, I die." I stated calmly countering every argument that she could present in one swoop of rejection. My words hit their mark as Tanya spun around to look at me while Edward stared at me with an unreadable expression on his face. I didn't care.
Death didn't scare me. The living, on the other hand, often did.
"I told you mom, she's just impossible," Alice grumbled while toying with the coffee cup that sat in front of her.
"Alice, please," Tanya corrected her before looking at me with pleading look. "Forgive her."
"The girl's a bitch," Edward half assed yelled as he jumped off the counter top to cross the space between to hover over me once more.
"Tanya, you're a very…unique person, but." I began slowly as I felt Edward's settle next to me, his hand slipping along my thigh to take hold of me since my hands were full by holding my coffee cup.
"I had a vision," Tanya interrupted in a rush of words that was hard to understand through her thick accent. "You, it was you, falling from the sky and then Charlie, your father, grieving your death."
"That doesn't mean anything," I managed to say with the confidence as I shook my head at her. I didn't want to believe her, since I knew better than most that there was a plan. I may not know what the plan maybe, but I had no doubt that it would not be revealed to some hack that had a fortune telling stand at the Muscatine Mall.
"I think maybe you should listen to her," Edward whispered to me. I felt his hand move up my thigh, around my hip to rest in the small of my back. It was comforting, but unnecessary since Tanya hadn't rattled me at all with her hocus-pocus revelation.
"I told you she wouldn't listen," Alice spoke up before standing up to place her cup in the sink."Her ghost boyfriend probably thinks her dying is a good idea."
"I… Never… No way," Edward sputtered with wide shocked eyes as he looked at me.
"Ok, if this is real, then tell me, who kills me?" I demanded from her, ignoring Edward's rambling.
"I don't know. What I see often changes. The only constant in the visions are your death and spirit boy at your side," she assured me as I shook my head no.
"Edward wouldn't hurt me," I stated refusing to believe her while repeating what he was whispering in my ear.
"Bella, I can only tell what I see," she countered back with a sad tone that hurt to hear. "And I can see him beside you as you fall."
Her words were dark, but her voice was confident.
"I wish I had better news for you, dear," she sighed as she leaned against the counter watching me with dark eyes while Alice stomped out of the room. I watched her go as Edward continued to touch me. His hands moved up and down my back, caressing and soothing me in an effort to comfort, but from what I wasn't sure.
"You're bond is very strong," Tanya commented as if she was mentioning the weather. I looked over at the woman to find her watching me. She was waiting for some reaction, but I had none to give her while Edward sat at my side with a distraught look etched on his face.
"So strong I can see him surrounding you. He protects you, doesn't he?" she continued on with amazement in her voice that surprised me.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I lied as I looked towards Edward. I mentally willed him to pull it together and see through her nonsense, but it was clear as he thoughtfully chewed on his bottom lip he wasn't about to do that.
"I've never seen anything quite like it," she mused for a moment. "The stronger it gets, the harder it will be to resist."
"Resist what?" I asked, already bored with the conversation.
"Death," she stated simply. "The pull to be with him will be too much until you finally give in."
"Okay, okay, okay," I mumbled as I brushed off Edward for a moment to focus on the woman before me with a scowl.
"I appreciate the warning," I stated through gritted teeth. "But if you really wanted to help me or Edward for that matter, you would just tell me who killed him."
"I don't know who killed him," she replied with a sigh. "My vision doesn't work like that. I can only see the future, not the past, and even then the future is uncertain."
"So you admit that you could be wrong?" I questioned her feeling more victorious than what I should have for a person that had been told they would die.
"There are a lot of things I could be wrong about, but your death is not one of them," she replied in an almost haughty tone. I watched as she packed up her things to leave.
I stood up and followed her out with Edward close behind. I could feel the irritation rolling off of him in waves that shook the air between us as we watched her pull out of the driveway and on to the street. Tanya gave me one last pointed look before driving away.
Once inside the house I turned to face the boy who was attached at my hip.
"You don't believe her, do you?" I questioned Edward as I looked into his silver eyes, needing him to believe in me over the quack that had brought me breakfast.
"I don't know, Bella," he admitted softly with a worried look on his face. It made him look older than his almost eighteen years that he was permanently frozen at.
"Okay, fine, you're right," I nodded as I watched his scowl deepen as I agreed with him. "I'm going to die, Edward. That's a fact and I can't get out of it. No one can. You didn't, remember? But don't think that for one minute that some quack who rented space at a mall is the one sent to tell me my time is limited."
My words did nothing to soothe him, but this wasn't about comfort. He had to face the fact that death was not only unavoidable, but that I was not exempt from that fate. I would die and it didn't matter if it was next week or in fifty years, it was going to happen no matter how he felt about it.
I watched as his eyes went wide like I had shocked him with my words. His mouth opened as if he were going to say something, but then changed his mind before speaking once more.
"I understand that fact very well," he replied with a slightly condescending grin that I was used to when it came to Edward. It was just enough to cause a flash of anger to burn through me as I took in his know it all smirk.
"You're making fun of me, you dick," I spat in disbelief as I turned to leave him, but was stopped as usual. Edward's hands pulled me closer to him while he laughed. I tried to dodge his touch as I shoved at him, but he ignored me. Edward let go of my hand and pulled me to him by the strings of my pajama pants. Once I was close enough he wrapped me up in a tight hug. I fought off the sigh that threatened to escape my lips as he began pressing a few kisses against my neck. It was in an unfair effort to calm me until I finally gave up the fight.
"Bella, look at me," he commanded softly as I looked away from him, refusing to give in to his demands.
"I'm not making fun of you. I swear to God I'm not making fun of you," he pleaded, but the laughter in his voice did little to help his cause.
"You're liar," I whispered as I finally looked at him, giving him my best bitch glare. It did little to take away the smile that he was trying to hide from me.
"You are so pretty when you're pissed off at me," he snickered like the dick he was before pressing a kiss against my lips. I refused to acknowledge him with word, but instead just increased my death glare. It failed to do anything except make him shake his head at me while
"I don't think you understand what it's like to be dead. Have you even thought about all the things you lose when you die?" He questioned me with an agitated sigh while I rolled my eyes in response to his nagging.
"I understand…" I began slowly, but he shook his head at me.
"You don't," he demanded softly as he held my gaze. "So just… don't act like it's nothing… That and you don't mean it, Bella. You don't want this."
"What? Not want you? Who in their right mind wouldn't want you?" I taunted him with a smile that made him laugh, but there was something to it that felt off. Maybe it was the shadow in his smile or slight frown that followed his laughter.
"I never said you didn't want me. I mean, we both know you do," he teased me with a confident smirk that made me bark out a laugh at his over the top self-assurance.
"Just so you know, I don't play hard to get either" he stage-whispered with a bright grin that made me laugh out loud at his antics.
"So you're easy?" I questioned him as he shook his head at me without losing that playful grin.
"No, not by a long shot," Edward grinned playfully as he squeezed me closer to him. "But since you know how I feel about being with you. And if you don't, let me make it clear, I like you and I'm ready whenever you are. I mean it too, any time."
"Okay," I laughed as I tried to push him away, but there was no escape. He had me locked in his arms, not that I minded. I was used to him being this close since Edward was always near me.
"Not to change the subject, but get your mind out of the gutter for just one second, Bella. We were talking about death and you don't want that." Edward assured me letting his grin fade a little as he looked at me, practically willing me to understand what he was saying.
"I don't know. I mean, I don't get the living, and they really don't get me. Death I understand. Sure, you have your limitations. You can't do everything you want, but there is a bonus. You'd be there for me, Edward, so it can't be all that bad," I teased him, but he didn't laugh. Instead, Edward just gave me a small smile and shook his head at me.
"Be careful what you wish for," Edward replied with a slight smile before pressing a quick kiss against my lips to silence me.
