Jane finds her lying supine in her bed, with her legs dangling over the end. Jane hesitates in the doorway. She takes a deep breath, as she stares at her bare legs.
"Are you decent?"
"I have undergarments on."
"Maura why aren't you dressed?"
"I just didn't feel like it," she lies.
"We have a crime scene to go to," Jane looks at her watch.
"You can go without me," Maura suggests.
"Maura I would love to, but unfortunately you never allow me to go without me, because one of my fellow officers might contaminate the crime scene. In fact I might contaminate the crime scene."
"I am too humiliated to go. Just bring the body back to the morgue and I'll meet you there."
"It will be fine. I am sure no one even noticed."
"My dress ripped."
"It was just a little snag," Jane minimizes the incident.
"You could see my underwear."
"I don't think anyone was paying attention."
"They could hear it from the next room."
"They probably thought it was me."
"I am not going."
"You have to. You're the medical examiner."
"I have nothing to wear."
"You have a million dollars worth of clothes, I am sure that's not true."
"Nothing fits," she argues.
Jane takes a seat on the end of the bed, "Put your big girl panties on and deal with it."
Maura's facial expression doesn't change, "That's not humorous at all."
"Just put your scrubs on," Jane suggests.
"It is distasteful to wears scrubs to a crime scene."
"It is distasteful to go to a crime scene with your under garments hanging out for everyone to see."
"You said no one noticed."
"They did, but I am sure that they are over it by now."
"I think that I'll call in sick."
"You never call in sick. You know that they won't believe you."
"I'll tell them that I have had an allergic reaction, which is not far from the truth, because I will have hives."
"You're going, now get dressed."
"No."
Jane nods, "Okay."
"Thank you."
"Then we're going to talk about it."
"Talk about what?"
"The elephant in the room," Jane answers.
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Your illegitimate love child with your ex partner."
"Gabe?"
"Your unborn illegitimate love child with your ex partner who is currently married to his other former partner, who is currently pregnant with his bastard child."
"You put it so elegantly," Maura replies sarcastically.
"I didn't know that you were capable of sarcasm."
"I just want to stay in bed for the rest of the day."
"You know that is not an option."
"Please," she begs.
"Maura at some point or another you have to face the music."
"Does it have to be today?"
"I am surprised by your petulant behavior," Jane tells her.
"Because you're usually the one who demonstrates petulant behavior?"
"Exactly. That is my forte."
"Jane I can't face all of those people."
"Why not?"
"I have to work with them every day."
"So what? What is the alternative? Are you going to fake your own death, and run away, again?"
"No."
"So you're going to pretend that nothing has changed, and you're not currently gestating another human being?"
"That has worked thus far."
"No, it hasn't."
"No one has said anything."
"Maura people have their suspicions. You can only deceive people who see you every single day for so long."
"I'm not ready to tell them."
"Then don't tell them, just stop trying to conceal it."
"What are you proposing?"
Jane points to her abdomen, "Stop trying to hide that."
"I…"
"Maura just trust me on this."
"I don't know what to say."
"Just tell them the truth."
"The truth? The truth is that a lifetime ago I made a mistake with my partner. I faked my own death, and left town because we conceived a child. A child whom most of them have no idea exists. Recently when I was reunited with my former partner I made a similar mistake, except now he is married, and having a child with his wife."
"All you have to tell them is that you're pregnant. You are not obligated to divulge any of the other details."
"Fine," she shifts into a sitting position.
"We'll talk about the rest of it later."
Maura furrows her brow, "The rest of what?"
"You have to tell Tony at some point."
"I don't see why."
"Because if you don't Gabe will. It's not as if you can hide an infant from him. Maura enough lies and secrets."
"We should get going."
Jane heads into her closet, and digs out a pair of black scrubs. She tosses them to her.
"Here put these on."
She grimaces as she slips a long-sleeved t-shirt over her brassiere. She pulls on the scrubs, and follows Jane out the door. She grabs a pair of heels, which Jane proceeds to slip out of her hands. She hands her a pair of socks. At the front door Maura begrudgingly laces up her sneakers. She grabs her medical bag, and follows Jane down the sidewalk to the car. As Jane climbs into the driver's seat Maura closes her door. Jane buckles her seat belt, and looks over at Maura.
"For the record this outfit is very practical."
"But?"
"However, it is aesthetically unpleasing. Quite frankly, it's boring."
"Quite frankly we were looking for something that won't rip at the seams."
