I crumble to pieces. I go down on my knees, weeping. Hot tears stream down my face, which is buried in my hands. Nat puts my head on his shoulder and embraces me.
"Shh," he tries to calm. I keep weeping into his jacket.
"He's gone." I say, handing him the letter.
Nat keeps his arm around me as he reads the letter.
"Who's Chris?" He asks.
"P-Prince Christopher of S-Swendway." I stammer.
"Why is he saying that you broke his heart?"
I explain the whole story to him. How Chris and I were "dating", how he cheated on me, how I decided to do the Selection because I needed to get over him. I spilled the whole story.
Nat looks to the side, trying to figure out wha to say.
He looks back at me and says, "He needs to get his shit together. How can he be complaining like a little girl when he cheated on you?"
I shrug. I wipe my face, but that doesn't stop the crying.
He pauses. "We need to get you back to the palace."
"Nat—" I try to protest.
"No, that's the only way we can deal with this. It's probably the only way we can get Matthew back."
I think for a while. "Then you're coming back with me."
"April—"
"April nothing. You have been so helpful, and I'm not just going to dump you here while I go back. You're coming with me and you're going to help me find him."
"You don't have to do this. Don't do this because you take pity on me."
"I don't take pity on you and I insist that you come back." I demand.
He smiles slightly. "When do we leave?"
I called Mom and explained everything. Nat and I are going to fly to Angeles tonight. A bunch of guards are here already so we can be protected. Nat packed and said goodbye to his family, and I'm already packed up, so we're at the airport.
"Have you ever flown before?" I ask Nat.
"Nope." He says.
"Nervous?" I ask.
"No." He smiles confidently.
"Really?" I ask suspiciously.
"Really. I don't have a fear of heights, I don't have a fear of big machines, and being air-borne seems like it'd be fun."
I smile. "Wow."
"I know, I'm impressive." He winks at me.
I smile. There's a period of awkward silence before a guard comes to tell us it's time to board.
"Here we go," I say as we get up.
The flight goes well. Nat likes looking below at the cities we pass. I think a lot about everything. About Matthew and Chris and Mom and Dad and Crystal and Nathan and Astra and Lance and Sarah and Nat.
When we land and exit the plane, my family is standing there waiting for us. I immediately run up to my dad and embrace him. I begin to cry whole he holds me.
"It's okay, sweetheart. Everything's going to be fine." He soothes.
I let go of his embrace and move on to my mom, who's crying as well.
"Why do you always have to try to do everything by yourself?" She asks, her voice shaky from her crying.
I laugh a bit and move on to Lance.
"I'm glad you're safe." He says. I nod and move on to Sarah.
"You don't always have to be so grown-up, you know." She reminds me. I giggle a bit. I nod. I then move on to Nathan.
"I'm so sorry this all happened." He apologizes.
"It's not your fault." I say. I move on to Crystal, who's crying as well. This shocks me that she's getting this emotional.
"I was so scared that something might happen to you too." She says.
"I promise I'm not going anywhere." I say.
I introduce Nat to the family and then Dad announces that it's time for everyone to head home. It doesn't feel like I'm going home. Home is with Matthew.
