Dani had never expected Jax to be so persistent. When she checked her phone the following morning, she had only two new texts, both coming from Gemma. Her world seemed to crash down on her. Didn't he care anymore? Was this it? Was this the end for them?

She pushed the blankets off of herself, yawning softly. Dani had spent the entire night thinking about Jax and how she should've told him. There was no way she could fall asleep without him sleeping besides her.

Jax knew she was going to be at the café today, so Dani could only hope he'd stop by to make a visit. He couldn't ignore her for the rest of his life, could he? Dani knew he needed his time to process this, but he was taking longer than usual.

She arrived early to set everything up. Besides her, Elijah would also be working. She still didn't know what to make of him. He was a good worker, there was no doubt about that, but the flirting was just a little awkward. Darren never did something like that with her, neither did any of her other male workers. If the flirting continued, she had to put him on his place.

It was late in the afternoon when Dani began to worry. Jax was a no show all day. No texts, no calls. Not even Gemma stopped by to say hello. She hadn't even heard anything about Abel, her son. Dani was lying if she wasn't worrying. Her stomach was in knots all day while she tried to keep her mind off things, but she had a bad feeling about this. Did they all just forget she existed?

"Everything alright?" Elijah asked. The customers were starting to leave the café since it was almost dinner time. Dani couldn't wait to get out of here and go home, her real home. If Jax wouldn't come to her, she would go to him.

Dani nodded. She didn't want to tell him about her problems. "Just want to get out of here, that's all."

"I can drive you home if you want?" he asked her, a twinkle in his eye.

"My car is outside," Dani replied, laughing while pointing to her own car parked in front of the café.

"I know. That doesn't mean I can't still take you home," Elijah continued. "Come on, let me make your day a little better for you."

His eyes scared her a little. Were they just playful? Or was there something more behind them than just a helpful colleague? Lately Dani failed to understand anything men around her did.

"I think I can manage to drive myself home," Dani chuckled. "Thanks for your offer though."

"No worries," he replied with a smile.

And that wasn't the only incident they had that day.

"Shit," Dani muttered when a mug dropped from the top shelf to the floor. This always happened when she tried to arrange them neatly. She climbed off the chair she was standing on, gathering some of the larger pieces in her hand to clean up.

Elijah had picked up on the accident quickly. He crouched down besides her.

"Here, let me help you."

Dani nodded, but here entire body froze when she felt his hand on the exposed small of her back. Her shirt had crept up from leaning forward and when his cold fingers hit her skin, she felt tingles going up and down her spine.

She wanted to believe it was an accident, that he was just helping her out. But what if he really was flirting with her?

Her thoughts were disrupted by her ringing cell phone. She quickly rose, Elijah's hand sliding off her back and she leaned over the countertop to fetch her phone.

"Hello?" she spoke, her eyes wandering back to the shattered pieces of ceramic on the ground.

"Dani?" Jax's voice said. "It's me."

The tone of his voice was enough for her to realize something was wrong.

"You gotta come to the hospital. It's Abel."

It was a miracle she had not been stopped by the police seeing as she was driving double the speed limit. Dani had left Elijah to close up when Jax had told her everything that had happened. She had hoped Jax would call her all day, yet the call she received was far from the one she had wanted.

She knew her way to the maternity ward by heart and it didn't take her long before she spotted the back of Jax's cut in the back of the hallway. She rushed towards him, not thinking when she embraced him in a hug. Dani was surprised when she felt his hand on her back, another softly gripping her hair.

"I came as fast as I could," she breathed. When she released Jax she saw Gemma and Clay were here as well. "Where is he?"

"Still in there," Jax replied, nodding towards the door that lead into the operation room.

Abel had been with Gemma when it happened. He suddenly stopped moving and his face slowly turned blue and that was when Gemma knew his heart had stopped working. The family flaw that proved to be harmless for Jax might just be lethal for Abel.

Dani didn't realize how much she was trembling until Jax pulled her closer to him. She tried to keep her body still, but there was no stopping the adrenaline rushing through her veins, her eyes closely watching the door behind which Abel would be operated on.

It was as if their fight had been wiped away as snow before the sun. Instead of worrying about Donna's death, they were both worrying about Abel. It was a shame it took such an unfortunate event to bring them closer together again.

Gemma and Clay disappeared to get some coffee while Dani and Jax took a seat in front of operation room. His hand was tangled with hers and Dani tried to keep her racing heartbeat under control.

"I don't want to sleep in my house again tonight," she muttered suddenly.

Jax turned his head slowly. "I don't want you either, babe."

Dani smiled faintly, glad he didn't hate her. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I know I should've come to you sooner."

Jax lifted her hand and pressed his lips on the back before lowering it again. "I shouldn't have gotten so angry with you. After what happened with Abel today, I realize I need you, Dani. I couldn't do this without you."

Dani leaned in to give him a kiss, a tear rolling down her cheek.

"Do you think he's going to be alright?" she asked when she pulled back again.

"I don't know," Jax replied honestly.

"Why do these things always happen to us? Why can't they just give him a god damn break?" Dani muttered.

She was sick of this. Sick of the hospital visits, the health scares, the stress it gave her. Would it ever get better?

Gemma appeared next to them out of nowhere. Dani noticed the notable loss of coffee.

"They are already done operating," she spoke. "I just spoke to the nurse. He's just gonna be fine."

Dani let out a relieved sigh before Jax embraced her. She could feel tears coming down her cheek again.
