People, I have an announcement to make. Search for the Twin will be finishing within the next 4-5 chapters. Yes. It is official. The other night, I stayed up till around 2 am finishing the final chapter. However, you don't have to start your official panic yet. I still have to type it and the chapters before it (and the others after this chapter) up and add them to the story. So, in the meantime, ENJOY!
Chapter 35:
Waking Up
Very slowly and very cautiously, the grey-eyed wolf turned to face me. I knew what it was trying to do; it was trying to not present itself as a threat. Unfortunately, my racing heart was not letting me believe that despite the inhuman strength and bravery that seemed to be coursing through my veins. Maybe my body was having some type of reaction to what I was being given (I was almost certain by now that I was the one getting the injections) but I definitely knew that little mini me was up and running around like a maniac again. And the wolf must have sensed that because he sat down and lowered his head before opening his mouth in a sigh.
" Dominic, please. Wake up." The wolf said in Lee's voice. That, by the way, was that creepy I actually took a step away from the wolf. " I know your scared at the moment. And I know it's because of me. But right now, I think I'm even more scared than you are."
" What?" I managed to croak out.
" I'm not the only one scared. Karla, Glade, Emmett, even your siblings are all scared for you. You've scared us all by falling into a fit and nothing we were doing was helping you break out of it. We only just managed to slip you into a coma before something bad could happen to you. But now, you need to wake up. I need you to wake up. If you stay in this coma any longer, we may just lose you. Next to that, we have much to talk about and I don't have much time. So please, let me lead you back to camp. I swear I won't hurt you. Please."
I hate to say it, but as soon as the wolf spoke in Lee's voice, everything clicked. Lee and the grey-eyed wolf were connected because, I'm pretty sure, they were the same person. I couldn't really explain how I knew that, but I was pretty sure I still needed proof… or at least confirmation from quite a few sources. And yet, even though I was still uneasy about everything (not to mention being in the presence of a wolf in general) I found myself following the grey-eyed wolf into deeper darkness.
Eventually the darkness began to lighten until the two of us came to a divide of sorts. Behind us was total darkness, silent and yet beckoning me to return to its depths. Before us lay a wide chasm of grey flames. And beyond that lay a land of light. The wolf leapt right over the chasm without a thought of hesitation – unlike myself who stayed behind a little longer, still trying to process everything. But eventually I took a deep breath and followed the wolf over the chasm and into the land of light.
I woke up slowly, trying to let my eyes adjust to the sudden shift of light. The first thing I noticed was that it was dark outside. Then, as I opened my eyes more and was able to focus on details more easily, I noticed the swarm of faces around my bed. Lee was sitting on the chair to my left with Karla, Emmett and Glade standing beside me. Nico and Will were standing on my right. I half recognised the son of Hypnos standing awake at the end of the bed with a familiar looking daughter of Demeter. Even Andi and a few other siblings of mine that I didn't quite know yet were watching and waiting.
" Thank the gods you've finally woken up." Will sighed in relief, instantly going into doctor mode and checking to make sure everything was okay.
" What…" I could barely speak because my throat was so dry, but I managed to get out what I was trying to say. " What's going on? What time is it?"
" It's eight o'clock at night on Monday the twelfth of November. You've been out of it for over a week."
" No."
" Yes. You were being possessed by ghosts. I could feel it all the way in New Rome when I went there for something. It wasn't a pleasant feeling." Nico di Angelo corrected.
Will continued. " It wasn't a pleasant sight, either. You did a lot of damage to yourself, flailing around like you were. We had to put restraints on you just to get medicine into you, but you managed to break your way through them before we could give you anything. The only way we could calm you down was by putting you into a coma. I'm being honest when I say that I never want to do that again."
" But… but, grey-eyes… wolf…" I muttered, still confused and still drowsy, before falling into a coughing fit thanks to my dry throat.
Lee supplied the answers to that once I had calmed down and had taken a sip of water. " We've been trying to wake you up for three day's now, Dominic. After we, or rather Nico, was able to settle down the paranormal activities inside you, we tried waking you up. But you wouldn't wake up. I mean, Will did order everyone to leave you alone to rest for an entire day – and got cranky with us when Benny managed to escape the kennels – but other than that, we couldn't wake you up. Katyana found out and she ended up dragging Clovis from Hypnos over to see if he could do anything. We found out why you weren't waking up and he managed to get us a way to help you fend off that… that monster. Emmett, here, was practically jumping out of his skin when he found that out, wanting to be the one to help you and bring you back. I had to turn him down, though. I had to be the one to bring you back because of your fear of wolves. And if I didn't hurry, not only would I be lost, but so would you. Spirits are a pain in the neck."
I just looked at the son of Athena, not really understanding what he was saying. Heck, I couldn't even figure out why Lee had to be the one to wake me up or what it had to do with my wolf fear. Not to mention the way he said monster when I knew he knew I was being tormented by a giant white wolf. And the son of Athena could see all this in my eyes, I'm sure of it.
So he took a deep sigh and helped me in trying to understand. " The grey-eyed wolf – the one with the grey coat and the black streak down the back and the white markings – that wolf is me. Or was me. Now, the silver moon is merely a reminder of a dark past."
To prove his point, Lee took off his jumper and turned to show me his left shoulder. Sure enough, there was a silver moon tattoo… and it was in the exact same spot as the grey-eyed wolf's moon. Even the scar patterns that cut through the moon and down the arm from the boy's shoulder blade was the same in every way; and that included the dark purple colouration that came with them. Suddenly, my fear was beginning to well up inside me.
" Will told me you've been having visions about a grey-eyed wolf with a silver moon on its shoulder. He especially told me about that time in Bunker 9 where you saw me shimmer into a hologram of the grey-eyed wolf while I was getting Assassin under control. He practically burst through the Athena cabin door just to tell me that. But before I explain who the cursed demigod is, or was, I need to ask. How long have you had this fear of wolves?"
At first, I didn't want to say anything about the wolf dreams I've been having. I just looked at everyone who was around my bed with a confused and fearful expression. My hope was that someone would give me an escape from answering or even a change of topic, but my luck failed me big time. And the fear building up inside of me was getting stronger.
Heck, not even when my gaze landed on the son of Hades and I practically begged him to make sure my brother's ghost didn't possess me anymore did I get any form of escape. Nico merely cocked an eyebrow and gained a look on his face that pretty much ordered me to answer Lee's question. In fact, looking around again, everyone was waiting for me to answer.
So, with a heavy sigh, I lowered my gaze and opened my mouth.
" Since the fourth of July." I sighed. " I've had this black hole inside of me since then. A bottomless pit of darkness where there was once fog covering thin ice. I know now that the fog and ice represented the separation between me and John, and that the dark chasm inside me now represents John's death.
" But, at night, my dreams were haunted – and still are – by a wolf erupting from the body of a boy and going on a killing spree. I remember it so vividly; blood and bodies over every inch of the town; torn limbs in places that they really shouldn't be; people running, screaming, from this blur of black, grey and white before being killed seconds later. The deaths all started with the wolf ripping open the boy from the inside out. And, always, the wolf ignored me, like I was some sort of ghost.
" The dream changed the same night I was forced to leave home in that silver car of yours. I saw the wolf clearly for the first time in months. The boy that it came from looked exactly like Lee and the wolf came up to me and talked to me. It was repeating words that had been said at school that day, and from other times as well. Also, the night before the car ride and that creepy dream that made me throw up on the side of the road, the night before… the last victim on the wolf's kill list was a boy that looked like a mirror version of me; John.
" That wasn't all. During the day, ordinary things would sometimes turn into wolves. Clouds were always murderous when they took shape. The wolves in the trees or bushes… well, they never lasted long before they merged back into leaves and branches. Heck, even images of wolves scared the living daylights out of me. Jayden and the Saint Bernards were the only ones who seemed to take away that fear.
" Even when I was on the run, the wolves and nightmares didn't stop. At one point, an entire pack of real, blue-eyed, golden wolves showed up and faced off against a pair of twin-legged dragon ladies. The wolves may have won against the dragon ladies, but they weren't going to get me and make me their next meal. I hightailed it out of there as fast as I could, despite the fact that I had a spear in my foot and a broken arm. I'm still surprised that they didn't eat or follow me.
" Heck, I wasn't even spared images of wolves when I arrived here. If I was knocked out, wolves would make their way into my head. The prophetic dream I had which led to the quest, that had wolves in it. A whole heap of them crowded round a hill and all had crescent moons. The grey-eyed wolf was on the hill and a massive white wolf burst out of Grey-Eye's shoulder and killed all the other wolves, one by one and using various methods. Then, after they were all dead, he started… he started… eating… eating Grey-Eye's shoulder. Even Assassin and Mrs O'Leary remind me a little of wolves. Okay, maybe not Mrs O'Leary, but definitely Assassin. And then Lee had to go all wolf and freak me out, not to mention that piece of paper that I swear wanted my throat. Heck, I was seeing wolves everywhere. Only, now, I'm trying to figure out what these wolves have to do with Lee and John and why they're haunting me."
All was silent when I had finally finished my rant. To be honest, I hadn't even noticed that I had been ranting about what had happened. All I knew was that I opened my mouth to try and explain a simple 'attack of the nightmare wolves' story and I ended up blurting out everything I've had to do with the monstrous creatures. Finally, someone managed to break the silence.
" Maybe all these visions of wolves are trying to… *yawn*… help you piece together the puzzle which has formed following… *yawn*… the death of your brother?" the Hypnos kid suggested from the end of the bed.
We all just looked at him. Okay, I admit. From what I've been told and what I've seen, that guy spent most of his days sleeping. I have very rarely seen the guy awake let alone heard much advice come out of his mouth. Next to Will, however, Nico was nodding his head as if what had just been said could have been a plausible explanation.
Slowly, Lee turned his attention from the son of Hypnos back to me. His grey eyes were dark with thought and he was gripping his once more covered left arm like it was causing him pain. I even saw his eyes dart from side to side as he worked something over in his head. By the time he started acting like he was listening to someone or something whispering in his ear, I was thinking he was going to need some medical help of his own.
" Clovis may be right." The son of Athena stated after a few more minutes of silence. Needless to say, he succeeded in scaring everyone (yes, even Nico di Angelo). " Even the prophecy that Dominic envisioned states something similar to what Clovis is saying. The fourth and fifth lines: Before the light can shine on the truth/And the search can stop for the soul is now one. My guess is, because Dominic lost his memory and his soul was torn thanks to John's… John's… departure, he needs to learn what caused his brother's… final disappearance. That leads into the wolves with the crescent moons – because I'm pretty sure that those wolves with the crescent moons in his dreams aren't just coincidence – and that also includes me. Of course, how all this links together can all be found in one very recent and very true story.
" I hope you're comfortable, Dominic, because I have a feeling you're going to need the long version of the story… and that's going to take some time."
