Booth lifted his laptop to his lap, and began typing immediately, watching as Agent Willis stood awkwardly in front of Brennan's desk. "Does he have to be in here?" He asked, tossing his thumb over his shoulder as Brennan glanced to Booth, who continued to type on his laptop. What Willis didn't know, was that he was paying close attention to the stress in Brennan's voice. He knew that she was tired, and combined with stress, he knew that she could falter, so he just remained in his seat and said nothing.
"I prefer it if Agent Booth continue his work so that we can solve our case." Brennan said, tilting her head. "Is there something that I can do for you, Agent Willis?"
Willis glanced to Brennan, and back to Booth for a second. "I… I just… I wanted to check on you. I wanted to see how you were doing."
"I am doing fine. As you can see, I'm back in the lab where I belong." She said, revealing nothing. "Was there anything more?"
"I just wanted to um… I wanted to apologize for how things went down. I didn't mean for you to get hurt."
"People died, Agent Willis." Brennan said, her eyes staring intensely into his. "Mothers and fathers lost their children, people were injured and maimed in this horrific crime." She said sternly. "I lost sixty percent of my hearing in my left ear." She growled.
"Bones." Booth said from his spot, her eyes snapped to his and he watched the anger melt slightly, her focus directly on his eyes.
Willis looked to Booth, and back to Brennan, who had moved her attention from Booth in that split second, and was now staring at him. "Agent Willis, I was dismayed to learn that the case was put on hold. I would hope that you would be first in line to ensure that this case were not dropped. I understand that the bomb may or may not have had anything to do with the case you were working on, but if you were truly sorry for what happened. If you want to avoid any sense of remorse, you wouldn't rest until the person who placed that bomb was put behind bars." Brennan stood, her hands holding to the desk slightly, but she had surprised even herself with the strength she had in that moment. Her voice was unwavering, with not a hint of a slur or misstep, and the anger she held in it was visceral.
Willis stammered a moment, unsure of what to say to the woman before him. Her eyes were filled with fire, a deep burning fire that he knew that if he didn't excuse himself soon, he'd be engulfed by. "I… I will be sure that the case isn't closed, Doctor Brennan. I want it solved." He nodded his head.
"Then why are you here?" She glared at him. "You should be following leads, not apologizing. Apologizing isn't going to bring those lives back, Agent Willis. I would like a full file of the case we were working on, if you don't mind, Agent Willis. I want everything about the case. I want interviews, stake outs, everything."
"Doctor Brennan, I don't know if…"
"You owe me, Willis. You owe those people who died, all those people who lost limbs or their sense of safety. I want those files, because I want to know that what I went through wasn't in vain. You owe me, and if you feel any sense of remorse, you will find a way to get them to me." She said, staring straight through him.
Willis looked to Booth, whose eyes remained on his computer screen, but his complete attention on his partner. He looked back to Brennan and nearly shivered at the intensity of her stare. "I will do what I can, Doctor Brennan." He whispered.
"I want them by the end of the week, Willis. I'm tired of sitting around waiting for something to be done." She growled.
"I will try." He nodded.
"Thank you." She said, watching Willis stand awkwardly. "Was there anything else, Agent Willis?"
"What? Oh, um, no. No, Doctor Brennan. I'm glad to see you're doing well." He said, stepping to the door. "Have… have a nice day." He said, waving his hand at Brennan, he waved toward Booth, who still hadn't looked up, and then he slipped out the door, closing it behind him.
As soon as the door latched, Booth moved forward and put the laptop on the desk, and immediately approached Brennan. As soon as he touched her arm, her body relaxed, sending her tumbling into him, exhausted. "Woah there, Bones…" He said, helping her across the room to the couch. "It's okay…I've got you." He said, helping her sit down, he knelt beside her as she lay on her side, her eyes staring out into nothing. "I'm proud of you." He whispered, watching her eyes flick to his, he watched a tear roll down her cheek. "Hey, hey…" He said, touching her cheek tenderly. "It's okay." He whispered. She suddenly reached out and grasped his hand with hers, and the grip was tight and firmer than it had been in a long time. "I'm proud of you." He said again, watching her eyes close tightly as she sighed. "Listen…" He said, running his fingers across her cheek. "You rest here, and I will go pick us up a salad at that bistro down the street like we planned." He watched her eyes open and a bit of a smile on her lips. He gave her a playful glare. "I'll get you a salad, and I'll get a sandwich." He said, shaking his head in faux disappointment. "Sound good?" He said, watching her nod, her eyelids drooping. He pulled the blanket from the back of the couch and carefully draped it over her. "I love you, Bones." He whispered as her eyes closed.
He stood up and grabbed his jacket, slipping it on quickly as he checked for his wallet and his keys. He flicked off the main light of the office, leaving just the desk lamp on. He was about to open the door when he heard her soft voice call to him. "What was that, Bones?" He said, his hand on the door handle as he looked across the room in the dark, he could see her looking up at him.
"I love you too." She said, smiling sleepily, she watched him smile back.
"I'll be right back." He said, quickly slipping out the door, locking it as he went.
Booth walked quickly through the lab, and just as he was about to reach the door, he heard Angela call out to him. He rolled his eyes and turned quickly, calming his step as she made her way to him. "Is Bren okay? I heard her raising her voice, and Agent Willis… he…"
"She's fine. She's resting. She got some things off her chest, and now she's resting." Booth said, watching the fear in Angela's eyes dissipate just a bit. "Listen, don't interrupt her, okay? She had a really good morning, and we don't want to compromise any more good days, okay?"
"You got it, Boss." She said with a smile.
"Don't do that." He said, shaking his head with a smirk. "I'm going to get our lunch, and I'll be back. She had better still be sleeping when I get back." He said, walking toward the door. He glanced back and Angela waved at him innocently. "I mean it, Angela…"
"Just get out of here." She said, shaking her head, she made her way back over to the platform as he disappeared out the lab doors.
