"Show me," Chin demanded. He stepped around Doris so that he could a better view of the image in McGraw's hands. The photo was of a rocky incline that led down to an open cave. Two jeeps were parked at the top of the incline and there were what Chin could see four men carrying cases down the hill.
"How do we know Wo-Fat and Haluu are there?" Chin asked. He took note of how quiet Doris had gotten.
"Our runner took this photo right before he saw Wo-Fat and Haluu. He didn't get a chance to snap the photo without the possibility of being made," McGraw answered. "This is legit Intel. It looks like Haluu is transporting arms of sort like he's ready for a major deal or some kind of war. That could be related to us- we don't know.
"It's best we don't wait around and see."
"Exactly," McGraw leaned in close as if he were trying to hide his next statement from any outside the group from hearing. "I say we take a team right now and raid that cave. We have motive and proof sitting right in front us."
"No," Doris suddenly stated. She shifted her weight between her hips before continuing, "No, no. This is something I need to do alone." She walked off without a word down the hallway and stairs. Chin stared at McGraw in disbelief as he tried to comprehend Doris' words. When a minute passed, he wrapped his knuckles against Steve and Danny's door and yelled, "Guys, get downstairs ASAP! Grab Kono while you're at it!"
Chin didn't stick around for a response and bolted down the hallway with McGraw. At the bottom of the stairs, both men could see Doris headed towards the living room, walking past two confused U.S Marshalls without a word. She picked up an empty travel bag from a living room table and started packing whatever objects were near- a map, a p229, flashlight.
"There's no way you're doing this, Doris. You're under protection from the U.S Marshalls because Wo-Fat and his multiple minions want you dead along with Steve and everyone else!" Chin exclaimed.
"Like I said before, I'm doing this alone, Chin."
"And what's your master plan? And please don't say wing it."
Doris narrowed her eyes. "Excuse me?! What makes you think I'd say that?"
"Because stupid ideas are a genetic trait for McGarretts," Danny said from the stairwell. He was standing on the second stair above Steve, who was holding onto the stairwell rail. He didn't say anything- essentially he couldn't say anything in response to his mother. Doris, on the other hand, started talking immediately when she saw Steve.
"Steve, honey. I know you hate me, but I need you to get your team to stand down and let me do this," Doris pleaded. "You deserve better than this so let me fix this. I shot his father because I was doing my job way before you and Mary were born. Please, Steve- let me redeem myself by doing this alone."
It's stupid- why the hell would she- oh, because it's what I would have done. Steve glared darkly at his mother and saw in his mother's eyes the same determination and craziness that his teammates saw in him on every case where he had done something stupid. For the first time in his life, Steve McGarrett wanted to do the rational, safest thing. He wasn't sure if it was related to the team teaching him about ohana or because his mother's sudden return- either way, it was an unusual, surprising feeling.
"I'm not the leader of this team," Steve croaked, "But I'm sure that whatever we do, Chin will make the right decision. McGraw mentioned something about a full raid of their hangout and if that's the case, a full SWAT team can raid it with the least amount of causalities."
Doris placed the bag onto the table. "At least let me draw him out. We have a better chance of sticking a nail in his coffin with some kind of verbal confession."
Steve glanced down to Chin, who looked back over his shoulder to give him a nod of approval. Danny watched the exchange between the two men and commented, "That's the least destructive set of words I have ever heard come out of your mouth. I'm so proud."
Hauula Beach Park
Doris pulled her silver SUV to a stop a half mile away from the cave. She took in a large, anxious breath before opening the door and stepping out into the bright, Hawaiian sun. Getting into the park had been easier than what she had expected, too easy in her opinion. She walked around to the trunk of the SUV, opened it quickly, and pulled out a black jacket that held her earpiece and the GPS clip attached to the collar. After inserting the earpiece in her ear, Doris also holstered a Sig P229 in her waist that would be concealed by her jacket.
"Doris, can you hear me?" Steve's voice echoed through the earpiece. Doris smirked and replied, "Yes, Steven, I can hear. You can call me mom."
"Just get in there and confirm that both Haluu and Wo-Fat are in there by saying the code word ohana."
"Why ohana?"
Steve paused before replying, "Because it's something this family doesn't grasp very well. Just go."
"Ok, I'm approaching now. " Doris started trekking down the small path that led to the cave. Once she made it to the entrance, she could see a lining of ceiling lights running from the entrance of the cave deep into the cave. Even though the small ceiling lights ran along the cave, Doris could barely see anything in the cave. The most prominent thing she could see is wooden boxes filled with guns.
Doris took a few steps into the cave and called out, "Hello?"
In response, she saw a red light appear on a chest, from a red dot sight. She didn't flinch -in her own fashion; Doris leaned onto one foot and held her hands up, saying, "You got me. I want to talk to Wo-Fat or Haluu...who's ever closest. Wo-Fat is my preference."
The light lingered on her chest for a moment before it flickered off and a dark figure stepped out of the darkness in the cave. She heard, "Doris McGarrett, I'm surprised that you came. Most people on a hit list don't walk up to their enemy's front door. "
"I'm not most people."
"Hmmm, that I know is true." Wo Fat stepped closer to Doris and his features lit up under the lights. His eyes flickered left and right before he asked, "Where's your son? I assume he knows about you."
Doris shrugged while keeping her cool, "It's just me. I want to have a talk with you alone before my son figures out about me."
"Fine, let's talk. I have men in the back of cave who will give us some much needed privacy," Wo-Fat said with open arms.
"And when we're done?"
Wo-Fat shrugged casually. "You'll die."
