Chapter 36
Angie held her cup of coffee between her hands. She looked up every time the bell chimed over the door indicating someone entered the coffee shop. She took a steady breath and once again regretted agreeing to meet with Mitchell. There was no point for them to meet. Paul wanted nothing to do with her. He even threaten to have her kicked off the Reservation if she contacted Evie. Her own son refused to talk to her.
"Your deep in thought," Mitchell smirked. He noticed her purse next to her. He slid in the booth making sure her purse was between them. "Perhaps you need a moment to pull yourself together." He waved the waitress away before she could ask him if he wanted anything.
"This isn't social hour," Angie snapped. She took a quick sip of her coffee. She looked around to make sure no one could hear them. "I told you I have nothing to say." She was leaning towards him.
"I'm sure with your womanly ways," he quietly said as he moved his finger over her hand. "You can get Derek, Charlie or even Billy to talk." He moved his other hand up her thigh and gave it a firm squeeze.
She tensed up tried to move away but he dug his fingers into her inner thigh. "You're hurting me," she whimpered.
"Please this is me you're talking to," he quietly laughed. "I know you like it rough baby." He kissed along her jaw moving is hand up her thigh.
"Please stop," she begged as she tried to move away from him.
"Tell me you're not thinking of our last time together," he whispered in her ear before nibbling on her earlobe. The soft moan told him she was enjoying it.
"Mitchell," she said biting her lip. He kissed her neck making her move closer to him. He always knew how to touch her. "That feels good." She licked her lips as he moved along her jaw.
He pulled away from her and caressed her cheek. "Time is running out and I need my daughters trust fund," he moved his thumb over her lips. Being the asshole came easy to him. Sometimes he wondered if it was easier to act nice or being an ass.
"Paul has blocked every move I've made to get close to Evie," she replied turning to face him. "Something is going on and no one is talking." Evie was always with someone when she left the Res. Paul knew when she was in close proximity of him or Evie.
"Baby, I know if you really try," he cooed. "You'll find a way." He held her chin tightly.
She pulled away from him. "Whatever angle you're trying to play, leave me out of it." She moved away from him trying to avoid the furious look in his eyes.
"Look," Mitchell stated firmly. "You need to figure out how to get close to my daughter. I need that fucking trust fund." He glared at her.
She looked away in fear. He never scared her before but now…now she feared him.
He quickly slid an envelope in her purse as he continued to glare at her. "No more excuses or your dear son Jason will pay the price," he said angrily as he watched Angie shake in terror. He got up and left.
She watched his retreating back. He never threatened her before. It didn't make sense for him to threaten Jason. She carefully lifted her cup up as her hands trembled. It was all too much. Her son's life was now in danger and it was her fault. She gulped down the hot liquid knowing she had to come up with a plan before Mitchell could hurt Jason.
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a few dollars to leave as a tip. She grabbed her purse and headed towards the door when the strap broke. Everything spilled out of her purse. She quickly grabbed what she could reach and shoved it in her purse. She walked out of the coffee shop looking around. She didn't want another confrontation with Mitchel.
Luckily her car was parked just outside the door. She immediately got in and put her seatbelt on. She jumped when there was tap on her window. She rolled the window down.
"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you," a young girl said smiling. "But you dropped this when your purse fell." She handed her an envelope.
"Thank you," Angie said giving the girl a small smile.
"My pleasure," she said before heading back into the coffee shop.
Angie looked at the envelope. Mitchell's writing was on the front. 'Sorry, please read immediately'. She looked around as she took several deep breaths. She started her car and headed back to La Push. She looked in her rearview mirror, paranoid she was being followed. She wanted to put as much distance between her and Port Angeles.
Paul and Seth waited outside Forks High for Evie and Gina to get out of school. They weren't taking any more chances with their imprints. Charlie had a deputy on campus claiming his office received an anonymous tip regarding unauthorized persons on the High School campus. The Principal was more than happy to have an officer on campus to protect his students.
Seth had the window partial opened as they waited. Even though there was a cop on campus it still didn't mean someone couldn't sneak in undetected. He glanced at the clock and smiled. The bell should ring in a minute.
Paul got out the car and walked around the front leaning against the hood. He could see Seth getting out leaning against the passenger door. He knew Seth should be at school but it was getting hard for him to be away from Gina. Sue refused to let him take his GED. Sam needed to talk to the kid before it became an all-out argument with Leah, which is something no one wanted.
"You do know Leah is going to have your ass," Paul stated. The bell rang and he kept his eyes on the gate he knew Evie always walked through.
"I know but you know how it is," Seth replied. "My wolf is chopping at the bit when we're away from Gina too long." He smiled when he caught Gina's scent.
"You don't have to tell me," Paul responded smiling. "There's my girl." She looked just as beautiful as she did when he dropped her off in the morning.
Evie looked up knowing Paul was waiting for her. She moved a strand of her hair behind her ear as she bit her bottom lip. He always took her breath away. Even with all the crazy crap they had to go through, it always amazed her how Paul could make her feel like it was just the two of them. Being surrounded by the Pack didn't make them feel crowded. She was used to spending her time with the guys.
She walked straight into his arms looking up as his lips met hers. It was a small kiss knowing they were onlookers. "I missed you," she said as he lightly brushed his lips against hers.
"Mmm…not as much as I missed you," he replied. He held her gorgeous face between his hands. "Let's get out of here," he suggested. He grabbed her bag and walked her around to the passenger side.
Seth was walking around the back of the vehicle when Paul opened the door. He smiled at Gina who was already in the back seat. He placed Evie's bag on the floor of the car and proceeded to buckle her seat belt.
"Did he just buckle you in?" Gina asked as Seth got in and Paul walked around the front of the car.
"Yes," Evie laughed. "I learned to just go with it." She turned in her seat to look at Gina.
"Well, I hope this guy," Gina said pointing to Seth. "Doesn't get the idea about buckling me in too," she lightly punched his arm. "He already carries me up the steps of my house and he put non slip stickers in my bathtub." She pretended to look angry.
"How uncoordinated are you?" Paul asked laughing. Seth was shooting daggers at him.
"Paul," Evie scolded. She shook her head at him.
"I mean Shorty and I have amazing balance," Paul continued with a smirk. "Last night we-"
"Security One," Evie shouted cutting him off.
"You wouldn't dare," Paul snapped. He scowled at her for a moment before looking at the road.
"Try me," Evie challenged. She crossed her arms as she glared at him.
"What the hell is Security One?" Seth asked confused but a bit amused at how quickly Evie shut down Paul.
"When it's called out by me or Beth at the guys back home," Evie began to explain. "They had to close their mouth and listen. If they argued with whoever called it out, they were no longer eligible for the games they play at parties." She turned to look at Seth. "Paul told you about the color shirt party and Saints vs Sinners on New Year's Eve." Seth nodded yes. "The guys live for the games and its fun. But Paul and I have modified the punishment." She looked at Paul and lifted her chin.
Paul glared at her for a moment while they were stopped at the light. "I sleep on the couch for a night," he stated. He faced the road when the light turned green.
"That's not too bad," Seth shrugged. His relationship wasn't as physical as Paul and Evie's. They made out but wanted to wait a little longer before travelling down the sex road.
"No physical contact for twenty four hours," Paul added. He heard Seth swear. Wolves needed physical contact, him especially. He craved Evie's touch and scent but she was stronger than him. As long as she had something that carried his scent she was okay. Damn karma, damn catch twenty two and damn it all to hell. She owned his ass…and he wouldn't have it any other way.
"Wow," Gina said shaking her head. "Yeah, we are never using that term." She grabbed Seth's hand and intertwined their fingers. "You can carry me anywhere…you can even buckle my seatbelt." She kissed his beautiful lips and smiled. "It won't be much longer before I can walk over to your house." She leaned her head on his shoulder.
"What are you two whispering about?" Evie asked. She looked at Paul knowing he heard their conversation.
"I'm moving back to La Push," Gina said excited. "My stepdad got a promotion but it requires him to travel a lot. Since we still have our house on the Res, he suggested moving back." She gave Seth's hand a squeeze.
"That's great," Evie smiled as she turned around to face Gina but then frowned. "Does that mean you're going to La Push High?" The thought of not seeing Gina every day at school felt like she was losing her friends one by one.
Paul reached for Evie's hand. He felt the anxiety she was feeling at the moment. It was difficult for her to be away from Beth and the guys. They have been a part of each other lives since they were little.
"While," Gina stuttered. She was biting her lip as she looked between Seth and Evie.
"It would make it easier for Gina to go to school on the Res than having to travel back and forth to Forks High," Seth explained pulling Gina closer. He knew she still wanted to go to Forks High because of Evie. They had grown close and it was easy for them to talk about the supernatural world they found themselves in.
"I know I should have said something sooner but I didn't know how to tell you," Gina confessed reluctantly.
Evie could see the apprehension and sadness in Gina's eyes. She didn't want to make her friend feel worse. She put a big smile on her face. "I think it's a great idea," she said excitedly. "You'll get to spend more time with Seth and now that I live on the Res we'll see each other all the time." She gave Gina's hand a squeeze before turning around to face the front.
Paul glanced at Evie. She was looking out the window with her chin in her hand. "Bella mentioned you have two more kids joining the tutoring class," he said trying to change the subject.
"She texted me with some of the details. They are thinking of starting a summer class," Evie said trying to sound enthusiastic. Paul took her hand and kissed her palm.
"A couple of guys tried to get into the program but they got denied," Seth said with a shake of his head. "The principal is screening everyone who wants to participate and are serious about their grades." He also knew Jacob and Paul were keeping an eye too but it was only to make sure no one tries to hit on their girlfriends.
"You know," Paul slowly began as played with Evie's fingers. "There's no reason you can't attend La Push High." He stopped at the stop sign. "You're Quileute and I'm more than positive Derek and Embry would be relieved to have you closer to home." He turned down the street heading towards the high school.
"My dad and Embry have been stressing even with the deputies at school," Evie pointed out. "Do you think it will affect my classes?" She looked over her shoulder to Gina.
"It's one of the reasons I'm meeting with the Principal and the Counselor today," Gina replied. "I mean it would probably be either transferring now or waiting until the end of first semester." She sat up and began to look through her backpack. "I'll let you know what they tell me." She pulled out a manila envelope.
Paul parked the car in one of the visitor's spots. He quickly got out and ran around the front of the car to open Evie's door. He grabbed her backpack. "Once you get all the info from Gina," he said as they walked towards the entrance to the school. "You can talk to Derek and Embry." He laughed. "I still can't believe Embry and Jacob passed their GED and I can't even…a conversation for another time." He opened the door to Evie and Bella's room.
Evie waved to Bella and Jacob. She pulled Paul to the side. "What's going on?" she asked lowering her voice.
"Can we talk about this later Shorty?" Paul asked avoiding Jacob's glare.
She looked him in the eye and knew what was wrong. She sighed as she held his face between her hands. "I love you Paul Lahote and you are more than a Protector. We'll talk later," she said before kissing him. He crushed her body against his as he buried his face in her hair.
"Thank you for always having faith in me," he whispered. He tightened his hold when he caught Jaime's scent. What the fuck was she doing here? "Fuck, Jaime is here." He took a deep breath and tried to relax.
"Hello Ms. Swan," Jamie politely said looking at Jacob. "Carrie missed you in class." She gave him a big smile.
"I took my GED," Jacob explained. He wrapped an arm around Bella and pulled her close. "This is my girlfriend Bella Swan. I'm sure you will benefit from her knowledge." He kissed Bella's temple.
"Jaime please feel free to take any seat," Bella smiled. "Hello you must be Carrie." She watched the raven hair beauty walk in swinging her hips as she licked her lips. The girl's eyes were set on Jacob.
"Hey Jacob," Carrie cooed as she ran her finger down his arm. She completely ignored the girl next to him. "Why haven't you called me?" she asked pouting.
Jacob pulled his arm away. He opened his mouth but Bella placed her hand on his chest. "Carrie," she said politely. "As long as you are in this class you will act appropriately or I will have you removed from the program." She leaned a little forward. "My boyfriend is off limits." She wasn't about to doubt Jacob's feelings for her. She allowed too many things to come between them. She wasn't going to let anything or anybody interfere with her relationship with Jacob again. She was done running.
Jacob couldn't keep the smile off his face. He wasn't surprised Bella was standing up for herself. Watching her made him swell with pride. He always knew she was tougher than she looked. Leaning down he whispered in her ear, "I love you so much."
Jamie smirked as she turned and dropped her books on top of the desk. Jacob was an idiot. She frowned watching Paul completely wrapped around his pale face 'girlfriend'. She eyed the other girl and knew how to play this to a T. She heard all about Evie McIntyre.
"Hey Paul, long time no see," Jaime leaned over a bit, giving him a view of her breasts.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Paul angrily asked. There was only one reason Jaime and her damn cousin were here and it was to cause trouble.
"Please excuse Paul," Evie smiled as she loosened Paul's arms around her waist. "You must be Jaime." She shook the other girl's hand. "There are packets on the back table. It will help us to determine what classes you need help in." She rubbed Paul's arms. It wasn't hard to miss that Jaime was up to something.
"I'll go grab the packet," Jaime said before turning around.
Paul watched Jaime walk away. "I'm sorry babe. Seems my past has a way of showing up and biting me in the ass," he let out a frustrated breath.
"Please. There is nothing that girl can say to make me doubt you," Evie turned and looked into his eyes. She placed her hands on his chest.
The bell rang signaling the end of school. Jacob gave Bella a kiss goodbye. He planned on waiting for her. From the look on Paul's face, he was sticking around too.
Paul kissed Evie and whispered he would be outside waiting for her. He nodded for Jacob to follow him. He wanted to talk to Elijah and Edgar before they entered the classroom.
Evie walked over to Bella as she pulled out some text books. "I assume Carrie flirted with Jacob," she was watching Jaime and Carrie talking in the corner. The door opened and few kids walked in. She waved to them and smiled.
"I'm not worried," Bella replied. She looked at Evie and shrugged. "What?"
"Nothing," Evie laughed. "I like seeing this confident side of you." She bumped her cousin's shoulder. "Bella 'The Martyr' was getting a bit old." Bella glared at her but she glared back.
"Yeah well, Evie 'The Know It All' isn't much fun either," Bella stated trying not to laugh. She knew Evie was always on her side. Between Jacob and Evie her confidence was soaring through the roof. They never stopped believing in her.
The door banged open and in walked Elijah and Edgar. They smiled and waved to Bella and Evie. Elijah took a seat at one table and Edgar sat at a different one. The rest of the kids walked in and took their seats. Bella nudged Evie when Elijah moved to block Jaime from sitting at his table.
Evie walked over to Edgar. "Jacob and Paul," she whispered as she leaned down to take his paper. He nodded and took out his book. She looked over at Bella. They shook their heads before going to each table and checking on homework assignments.
"Remember to put all your pop quizzes and test in the front jacket of the dividers," Bella said looking over Elijah's dividers. She noticed Carrie and Jaime raise their hands. "I will give you the dividers in one second." She placed the binder back on the desk.
"I got it Bella," Evie called out. She went to the back of the class and grabbed the dividers. She handed Carrie and Jaime the dividers. "Here you go ladies." She gave them both a smile.
"I think I owe you an apology," Jaime quietly said as she tossed her hair over her shoulder.
"Why would you need to apologies?" Evie asked a bit confused. She noticed Edgar moved his chair. If Jaime tried to do something he would be able to stop her from his new position.
"Well a while ago I was naked in Paul's bed," Jaime bit the end of her pen. She watched Evie's face and had a feeling she didn't know about her little sneak attack on Paul a few months ago.
"Quil got quite an eyeful from what he told everyone," Evie laughed. The look on Jaime's face was priceless. Poor girl thought she actually had something against Paul. "But of course Paul wasn't amused at your lack of respect for our relationship. He threw out the bedding and tossed out the mattress." He didn't toss the mattress but the look on Jaime's face was worth the lie.
"He told you?" Carrie asked shocked. She never thought of Paul being honest and caring about anyone but himself.
"Of course he told me," Evie stated a bit defensively. "We don't keep secrets from each other." She turned and walked away.
"Interesting," Jaime said tapping her finger on her chin. "He told you about all the girls he's…well…fucked?" she smiling mischievously. She was standing up looking at Evie with her hands on hips.
Everyone in the room stopped talking as they watched Evie and Jaime. Most knew Paul was serious with Evie. He was always with her before and after class. Not mention he made sure the guys in class knew Evie belonged to him.
Evie could feel her cheeks turning red. "Any discussion regarding my boyfriend is completely inappropriate," Evie politely replied. She could see Jaime wasn't going to let this go.
"Jaime," Carrie whispered as she pulled on her cousin's arm.
"Your right, this is a conversation for another time," Jaime smiled as she took her seat.
Bella walked over and whispered for Evie to help another table. She nodded and went to Pete and Damon's group. She gave them a big smile and began to look through their notebooks. Time flew as she answered questions and showed a few people an easy way to work out some math problems.
"I know a few of you have a test tomorrow," Evie said. She was moving around the room putting stuff away. "Please remember the study guide we gave you." She stopped by the door.
"Go over your quizzes and well as the notes you have taken," Bella added. She was standing by the last table near the door. "Remember no school next week which means no tutoring. Have a great Thanksgiving." She smiled as most of the students left.
Evie pulled out her phone and laughed. "Seems we need to hurry," she said showing Bella her phone. "The guys found out Nana made some sweet potato pies." She put her phone away.
"They act like they haven't eaten in days," Bella laughed as she gathered her stuff.
Elijah was standing in next to Bella. "Nana made pies?" he asked throwing his backpack over his shoulder.
"Can we come over?" Edgar asked standing up. "Nana's pies are the best." He grabbed Evie's backpack.
"Sure, I know how much she loves to feed you guys," Evie answered. "Besides I can help you study for your test tomorrow." She turned when Elijah opened his mouth. "You too, I didn't forget." She opened the door to leave when she felt warm arms wrap around her waist and pull her to the side and against the wall. Edgar was standing in front of her glaring at Jaime and Carrie.
Elijah walked out with Bella behind him. "What the hell are you still doing here?" he spit out furiously.
Edgar dropped his and Evie's backpack on the ground. He could hear footsteps approaching. He took a quick sniff of the air and knew it was Principal Timber. He knew Jacob and Paul were in the parking lot waiting for Bella and Evie. "I think you should leave," he firmly said to Jaime. "The Principal's on his way and I'm more than positive he won't appreciate a student trying to attack a teacher." He kept his arms away from his body in case Jaime tried anything.
"Maybe you should leave," Carrie retorted. "It seems you and Evie have a thing going on behind Paul's back." She flipped her hair over her shoulder. "But doesn't Elijah have a thing for Evie too?" She turned to Jaime.
"Wow Evie is doing the twins," Jaime said making a face. "Everyone thinks you're so sweet and innocent but really you're just a slut." She smiled waiting for Evie to do something.
"Is that the best you got?" Evie asked laughing. "Get over yourself. Paul wants nothing to do with you. You were completely naked in our room and he didn't even give you a second glance when he told you to leave." She was holding Edgar's arm as he held her back. "Calling me names doesn't change anything."
"You bitch," Jaime yelled as she took a few steps forward.
"What is going on?" Mr. Timber said as he stood behind Jaime.
"The tutor's you hired to help us don't know a thing about teaching," Jaime scoffed giving Evie a dirty look. She turned to face the Principal. "Not to mentioned, that one right there is dating a student." She pointed to Evie. "While three students."
"Bella is also dating a student," Carrie added with a smirk.
Mr. Timber looked at Evie before looking at Jaime. "Considering Miss McIntyre is a student tutor and under eighteen, she may date whomever she wants. But I believe she is only dating Mr. Lahote as he stated in our earlier conversation," he explained a bit irritated. He was tired of dealing with Jamie and her cousin. It seemed Paul was correct in his assessment of Jaime's infatuation with him. Telling her of his lack of interest in her has fallen on deaf ears.
"What about Bella?" Carrie asked. "She's definitely over eighteen." She knew Jacob was under eighteen. Jaime may have lost but she still had a chance.
"As I'm sure you've noticed," Mr. Timber began. "Mr. Black has not been in school for a few weeks." He wondered how long Carrie stalked the Chief's son. "Mr. Black is no longer a student here at La Push High."
"You got him kicked out," Carrie shouted looking at Bella.
"Miss Oso," Mr. Timber angrily said. "Please refrain from using that tone with a student teacher." He moved closer to the girls. "Mr. Black took his GED which might be something for you two to consider." He ignored their protests. "I want both of you in my office. Both your parents will be called, again." He gestured for them to walk.
"Thank you Mr. Timber," Bella said locking the door. "I really hate to deny helping anyone but in this case I can't allow them back into the tutoring program." She turned when she heard a small commotion around the corner.
"I agree with you Miss Swan," Mr. Timber stated as he looked around the corner. Carrie and Jaime were blocking Jacob and Paul from walking away from them. "Girls, my office. Now," he shouted. He turned to Bella, Evie and the Ateara Twins. "Please excuse me." He headed towards the girls while Jacob and Paul finally untangled themselves from Carrie and Jaime's grasp.
"What the hell happen?" Paul asked looking at the twins. "You two bone heads were supposed to keep the girls safe." He walked over to Evie and was surprised to see an angry look in her eye. He stopped but growled when he noticed her holding onto Edgar. The kid tried to move away but Evie held onto him.
"Don't blame them," Bella replied. She grabbed her backpack. "They did their job." She looked at Paul before looking at Jacob.
"Bells, what happen?" Jacob asked taking her backpack and pulling her into a hug. He kissed the top of her head before patting Elijah on the back.
"We caught Jamie's scent when Evie opened the door," Elijah began. Paul made a growling sound. "Edgar pulled Evie out of the way." He looked at Paul. "Carrie made a nasty comment about Evie and us." He gestured to Edgar and himself. "Jaime made a comment and Evie told her off." He looked at Evie.
"She called me a bitch and the Principal heard," Evie said frowning. Paul was slightly shaking. "And a slut," she added.
"That fucking…," Paul hit one of the lockers, leaving a dent.
"She made a comment about a teacher dating a student and Carrie made a remark about Bella and Jacob," Evie continued.
Jacob pulled Bella close and tried to contain his anger. Carrie and her damn cousin didn't know when to stop.
"Mr. Timber told them we haven't done anything wrong and he was going to call their parents," Evie ignored their outburst. She was looking at Paul. "Edgar was keeping me back from punching Jaime." She finally let go of Edgar's arm. He quickly stepped away. "Instead of getting mad, you should have asked what happen like Jacob did." She picked up her backpack.
Paul sighed. "Thanks bro," he said to Edgar. He cupped Evie's face. "Your right," he quietly said. "I should have asked. But in my defense I'm tired of my past biting me in the ass and you having to deal with it." He kissed her forehead.
Evie wrapped her hands around his wrists. "You've let go of your past," she sighed. "It's the past that can't let go of you." She took a step towards him and wrapped her arms around his waist. She rested her cheek on his chest. "I love you and nothing is ever going to change that." She relaxed when he held her close.
Embry walked up the steps and groaned. He wanted a few hours of sleep after patrolling but instead the house was full of his Pack Brothers. He stopped at the door when the smell of fresh homemade pies attacked his senses making his stomach growl. He headed straight to the kitchen ignoring everyone but Valisa.
"Nana," he called out giving her a big hug. He looked around the table and scowled at Paul who was licking his fork. "Please tell me that's not the last of the Sweet Potato Pie?" He stomach growled again.
"My sweet baby boy," Valisa laughed as she patted his cheek. "Of course not sweetie, I made a pie just for you." She gestured for him to sit. "I also have chicken sandwiches' and potato salad for your snack." She kissed the top of his head as she placed a huge plate in front of him. "Here's a clean shirt. I forgot to place a few in the container outside." She walked into the kitchen and grabbed a pitcher of water.
"Nana, that's a snack?" Evie asked laughing. "Those six huge sandwiches could feed a small village and don't even get me started on the potato salad." She pushed Embry hand away when he messed up her hair.
"I'm a growing boy who needs to eat," Embry laughed. "Not all of us eat like a bird." He gave her a look and laughed.
"I heard someone went cliff diving and didn't invite," Evie sang before leaning back in her chair.
"No cliff diving," Embry and Paul said at the same time.
"And it starts," Jacob laughed. He put a finger over Bella's lips. "Let them sort it out."
Derek quickly held up his hands. "Leave me out of it," he said looking at Embry, Evie and Paul. He sighed when Evie crossed her arms. "I will say Shorty has gone cliff diving a lot with the guys." Evie smiled and stuck her tongue out at Embry and Paul. "But every place is different and currents can change quickly." He looked at Evie until she finally nodded in understanding.
"The weather isn't good for cliff diving anyways," Evie shrugged. She picked at her pie.
"How's the tutoring going?" Embry asked. He noticed the look in Edgar and Paul's eyes. Crap, what the hell happen now?
"It was fine," Evie answered avoiding eye contact with everyone. She got up and went into the kitchen.
"The program is coming along," Bella added. She cleared her throat. "We got two new students but it's too early to tell how they will do." She took a drink of water.
"Why do I get the feeling I'm missing something?" Embry asked noticing the way Valisa and Derek looked uncomfortable.
"You always think the worst," Evie scoffed taking a seat. "I had a pop quiz in Spanish, which I aced." She patted her back earning a laugh from Paul.
Embry listened to Evie talk about her day. He kept his mouth shut knowing she would eventually get to the reason why Edgar was a bit jumpy when she mentioned La Push High. He noticed Paul look away clenching his jaw. Yeah, something was going on.
"So Gina is transferring to La Pus after Thanksgiving break," Evie announced. "Which is great but I'm going to miss her." She would talk to her dad about transferring later.
Paul was leaning back playing with the end of Evie's hair. He kept an eye on Embry as Evie got closer to talking about Jaime. He could predict the outcome once Jaime's name was mentioned. Evie knew about Jaime and Embry's threat.
Derek looked at Embry and shook his head knowing he was about to ask a lot of question that would eventually lead to an argument. "Shorty, Principal Timber called. He said you and Bella are doing a great job," he smiled at both girls. He placed a hand on Embry's shoulder. "There was just a small incident but the Principal took care of it." He tried to ease the confrontation he knew was coming.
"What incident?" Embry asked looking at Evie. "How small was it?" He glared at Paul knowing he had to be involved in some way. It's never a dull moment in the McIntyre-Smith-Call house.
"Some girl named Jaime called Evie a word I won't repeat," Derek answered. "Jaime is suspended for three days." He patted Evie's hand when she took a deep breath.
"I had a feeling he was going to call," Evie remarked. "But it wasn't a big deal. Mean girls are a part of High School. I can handle anything Jaime Oso can throw at me." She shrugged not wanting to make more of a deal out of it.
"Jaime," Embry barked looking at Paul.
Evie moved her arm in front of Paul as she stared at Embry. "Don't even think about it," she warned. Embry shifted as if he was going to fly out of his seat.
"I won't tolerate fighting in the house boys," Valisa firmly stated as she leaned on the table looking between Paul and Embry.
"Outside it is," Embry said standing up. "You need to decide head or gut?" He cracked his knuckles.
Evie watched Paul stand up with a smirk on his lips. "Dad," she called out as her brother and boyfriend took a step away from the table.
Derek sighed. He knew they wouldn't do anything. The last thing either of them wanted was to upset Evie. He looked at Jacob and the twins. "Jacob, Elijah and Edgar," he gestured for them to follow Paul and Embry. "Make sure they don't hurt each other." He grabbed Evie before she could follow them outside.
"No fighting in wolf form," Jacob shouted from the back door. He smirked knowing they were both in trouble with Valisa. "Don't worry Evie; we'll keep them in line," he said over his shoulder.
The guys moved towards the trees and away from the house. Edgar and Elijah were taking bets.
Evie paced around the kitchen wringing her hands. She couldn't see anything. The only thing she heard was raised voices but couldn't make out what they were saying. She looked at Bella who shrugged and took a bite of her apple pie. She continued to pace knowing Embry and Paul were both in deep trouble if they hurt one another.
"Everything is still on schedule," Alice happily sang. "Only a few more days until Bella joins us." She twirled around happy for the first time in a long time. The hurt she felt regarding Jasper was finally easing. He just didn't understand there are more important things than living a mundane life when you can have an extraordinary one.
Edward smiled as he watched the vision of his reunion with Bella play through Alice's mind. Bella never understood how truly beautiful she is. Looking upon her face in the vision reminded him of the night she accepted his proposal. They were completely in their own world with not a care in the world. He longed for another moment like that one.
"We had the placed surveyed and everything is set," JT said closing his phone. "Ty pull up the blueprint." He turned on one of the monitors.
"Also the van will be ready tonight," Ty stated as he moved the blueprints to show on the monitor.
"The timing will be very tight and we have exactly one minute to pull this off," JT pointed out. "We'll lie and wait here," he pointed to a crawl space. "Once we are securely in the van, we'll go radio silent for ten minutes." He looked at Alice.
"I'm not sure what is causing the allotted window of time to fluctuate so much," Alice looked at Edward. "I say stick to the minute window we have." She turned to Edward.
"I agree," Edward said looking at the monitor. "We been over every scenario with only a minute to pull this off and if we try to push our luck, I'm afraid we'll lose our chance to rescue Bella." He looked over the blueprints.
"Mom," Jason shouted as Angie pulled the blanket off of him. "What the hell? It's too damn early for this crap." She was getting on his last nerve but unfortunately there wasn't much he could do about it.
"Jason, you were supposed to pack your clothes," Angie scolded. She'd been a nervous wreck ever since she her meeting with Mitchell. The letter was burning a hole in her back pocket.
"It's six in the morning mom," Jason grumbled. He pulled the blanket out of her hand and pulled it over his head. "It's Sunday for gosh sakes."
"I told you we have to leave by seven," Angie pulled the blanket off of him.
"Damn," Jason complained. "Yes, I remember your crazy instructions." He got up stomping his feet. "Stay in the house, don't talk to anyone, keep stay away from Paul and we are leaving Sunday morning at seven." He shook his head. "Who the hell came up with these stupid rules?" he asked walking into the bathroom.
Angie ignored his complaining and pulled out the letter. She read the instructions one more time knowing she had to follow them to a T. In the back of her mind she still prayed Mitchell was wrong and trying to mess with her head. But she grew up hearing the stories of Cold One's and especially about the Protectors. He didn't give her names and she didn't want to know. She bent down to pick up the other envelope that fell but Jason beat her to it.
"Why does this have Paul's name on it?" Jason turned the envelope over in his hands and stared at his mom. "You were supposed to give him the letter yesterday." He pulled the sticky note off and showed his mom.
"Paul won't see me," Angie protested. "I was planning on mailing it to him once we leave." She tried to grab it from him.
"Either we drop it off at his house or I'm not coming with you," Jason threatened. He crossed his arms over his chest making sure to keep the letter away from her. He owed Paul for helping them out. They would have been out on the streets if it wasn't for Paul and his friend.
Angie stared at her son hoping he would cave in and give her the letter. After a few minutes she tried to grab it again but he was too fast for her. "Fine but you get out and leave it in the mailbox." She turned on her heel and continued to pack clothes.
Jason smiled and folded the envelope before sticking it in his back pocket. He grabbed his clothes and stuffed them in the suitcase. He kept an eye on his mom. It's not that he didn't trust his mom but he didn't trust her. She wasn't being honest with him and was only giving him bits and pieces of information.
He put his shoes and jacket on and grabbed a suitcase before walking outside. She was hiding something and from the way she kept looking over her shoulder and double checking to make sure the locks were on, it was bad, very bad. The sky was still dark but for once it wasn't raining. He opened the trunk and placed the suitcase inside. He smirked when his mom walked out carrying two suitcases and three duffle bags. She was definitely in a hurry.
"There are three more bags," Angie gasped out. "We have to leave now if you insist on stopping at Paul's." She checked her watch. "We don't have a lot of time to spare." She closed her eyes as she tilted her face towards the sky. She silently prayed everything Mitchell said in the letter would worked. Leaving was the only way to protect Jason from the Cold Ones.
"Mom," Jason waved his hand in front of her face. "I've been calling you for five minutes." Her face was pale and she looked nervous.
"Sorry, I was thinking," she said trying to smile. She gestured for Jason to load the rest of the bags.
He watched his mom get in the car. He had a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. He closed the trunk and got into the car. She didn't say anything as she backed out and headed to Paul's. He wanted to ask her about the letter she kept reading but she seemed more nervous as she looked around.
Angie tried to relax and concentrate but she kept seeing flashes of pale white skin. She stopped at the light and gave a sigh of relief when a police cruiser passed them. When the light changed and she made the turn it eased her mind knowing they would be far away from La Push soon enough.
Jason's smiled faded when he noticed Evie's car parked next to Paul's truck. He really liked her but blew any chance of getting to know her. If he hadn't listened to his mom and gone stalker, he could've shown Evie what a great guy he is. He let out a frustrated breath when his mom stopped the car a few yards away from the vehicles.
"Just run and drop it in the mailbox," Angie ordered as she gestured for him to get out of the car.
Jason rolled his eyes and got out. He ran up the steps and dropped the envelope in the box. He thought about knocking on the door but decided against it. He jogged down the steps not looking back. He got in the car. "Let's start whatever new adventure you have planned." He gave his mom a big smile.
Angie put the car in gear just as it began to pour. She silently thanked Mitchell for suggesting in his letter she buy new tires. She looked at her watch and smiled. They should be safe now.
"I thought you said we had to stay in La Push," Evie whined getting out of the car before Paul could open the door for her. "We can watch movies at home." She was agitated and hated feeling that way.
"Quit being a brat and enjoy the day," Paul ordered as he took her hand. "I know your upset the guys and Beth haven't called. They are probably flying to Colorado and can't use their phones yet." He kissed the top of her head.
"Your right, I'm being a brat," Evie smiled. She watched Embry and Leah get out of his new dark blue truck. "It's the first Thanksgiving we aren't celebrating together. But it's also the first Thanksgiving I get to spend with you and Embry." She tilted her head up. "I wouldn't be anywhere else." She smiled when Paul leaned down and kissed her.
Jacob messed up Evie's hair. "Next time you get to ride shot gun," he scoffed pulling Bella into his arms. He laughed when Paul growled.
"Did someone call my sweet little sister a brat?" Embry asked walking over to them holding Leah's hand.
"Yes," Evie said smiling. "My feelings are hurt and I deserve a treat." She patted Paul on the chest. "Something with chocolate sounds good." He leaned down and kissed her.
"I agree," Leah stated leaning her head on Embry's shoulder. "Let's eat. Our movie doesn't start for another two hours." She looked up at Embry and batted her eyelashes. He laughed and kissed her forehead.
"Let's try that diner on the corner," Jacob suggested. He held Bella's hand.
"Great idea," Paul said holding Evie's hand.
Evie pulled out her phone but there were no text messages or missed calls. She smiled at Paul as she put her phone away. It wasn't that far of a walk from the parking structure to the diner even though the rain stopped the sky was still dark.
"I'm starving," Embry announced as they crossed the street.
"You're always starving," Evie laughed. She hid behind Paul when Embry turned around. "No playing around my phones ringing." She pulled out her phone and smiled. "Jerry, are you guys in Colorado?" She gestured for them to head inside but the guys shook their head no.
"Not yet, we decided to stop at this little diner before heading out," Jerry answered. He shook his head at Tank and Toby. As they rounded the corner he put his finger to his lips telling everyone to be quiet.
"Really, we're at a diner too," Evie laughed. "At least we are still on the same wave length. Which diner at you guys at?" She slowly turned around to see what Paul was looking at. She blinked a few times before dropping her phone and running towards Jerry and the guys.
Paul caught her phone before it hit the ground. He bumped fist with Embry. "She really needed this," he said watching the guys and Beth as they tried to hug Evie at the same time.
