Chapter 35: Prevented Runway

(Back to normal POV)

A constant beeping sound annoyed my ears- its short and detached beats continuously punching at my brain. Feeling the annoyance and urge to rip whatever was beeping apart, I slowly began to lift my heavy eyelids open.

The first thing that greeted me was a sharp glaring white light. Blinking at the sudden glaze, I squinted my eyes to adjust the brightness. Then, following the light, I noticed various colored cords hanging above me. Confused, I carefully raised my head.

"I see you've finally awaken, Kenya." A deep tone ushered next to me

Voice sounding awfully familiar, I arched my head to the side and flabbergasted after spotting Yuushi sitting calmly on a stool with a thick romance novel in hand. Behind him, Shouta slept like a baby on a comfy couch.

Surprised by the appearance of my cousin, I instantly jotted up and was just about to open my mouth to yell something ridiculous at Yuushi- before a sudden alarm went off around the room.

Hearing the blaring noise, Shouta immediately woke up and rubbed his eyes while Yuushi merely face palmed and took off his glasses to massage his temples and lower a headache.

"Excellent way to wake up Kenya-" he muttered, "Plainly brilliant…."

(Hikari's POV)

The following morning, I woke up to a peaceful and quiet household. Quietly slipping on a thin cardigan, I glided myself out from the guest bedroom and headed down the staircase. Wondering if Kagami-san had risen or was still in bed, I silently turned to the kitchen.

Yet, just as I was about to land a step into the brightly lit kitchen- I tensed up and remained still as a rock after spotting Kagami-san standing near the stove kissing most passionately with her lover. With her back turned to a heated pan, a pancake sitting inside was on the verge of burning.

I coughed, "Kagami-san…." I uttered

Hearing her name muttered out, Kagami-san snapped her eyes open with shock before pulling away from Shiraishi-kun. Unprepared by my appearance, Kagami-san staggered about the kitchen.

"I-I'm so sorry, Hikari-san," she stuttered, quickly rushing to the fridge with a slight blush on her cheeks, "I didn't see you standing there."

Managing a small smile, I shook my head, "Don't worry about it Kagami-san," I ushered before glancing at the stove, "And your pancake is about to burn."

"Shoot-" Kagami-san swore before adding in another mutter in a foreign language.

Reaching forward, Kagami-san aimed a hand for the button but was beaten by the sharp reflexes delivered by her lover- who by a single twist, turned the gas off and refrained further burnings to the poor pancake.

"Looks like you'll have to make a new one for Hikari-san," Shiraishi-kun declared, flipping the burnt pastry onto a plate, "I'll eat this one since it's shows sweet Kagami's skills when she's distracted."

Scowling at her lover, Kagami-san tugged the sleeve of Shiraishi-kun's jersey and pulled him out from the kitchen, "Go and play with Kurarin for a while," she insisted, "You two can share your weekly thoughts."

With a final laugh and kiss on the cheek, Shiraishi-kun pecked his lover's lips before heading back down the hall and disappearing into the lounge room to track down the furry tabby cat.

"I'm really sorry about that," Kagami-san sighed as she turned back around, "Kuranosuke has the craziest ideas."

I chuckled, "It's really quite adorable," I teased

Blushing a light shade of rosy pink, Kagami-san hurried back to the stove and started another pan of pancake mixture. Murmuring something foreign to herself, Kagami-san kept quiet.

"I have news!" A voice suddenly interrupted the silence within the kitchen

Shooting up by surprise, Kagami-san knocked her head against the overhead cabinet, "K-Kuranosuke! Don't scare us like that!" she complained

Shiraishi-kun snickered before passing a small folded note to me, "Kenya's room number-" he declared, "You can visit him now."

Feeling a rush of joy enter my body, I glanced down at the piece of paper Shiraishi-kun offered before gently taking it from his hand, "When did he wake up?" I questioned

"About an hour ago," he replied, shrinking a bandaged hand back, "Jotted out of bed and ripped all the medical cords out- sounds like Kenya to me."

With that being said, Shiraishi-kun ushered his way back to Kagami-san and regained his continuous teasing and occasional pecks to his lover's cheeks and lips.

"I like your skirt today, my ecstatic Kagami~"

"Kuranosuke! You pervert!"

(Back to normal POV)

"Yuushi, this is not fair!" I whined, "You can't keep me in here forever!"

Ignoring my complaints and whimpers, Yuushi merely turned a blind eye to me and instead sat back down on his stool. Flipping through his romance novel, Yuushi pushed up his glasses.

"You need to rest, Kenya," he insisted, "Tennis is out of the question."

I growled and sat up to argue- yet, a sharp sting to my chest refrained any further of my movements. A sigh was heard from the ever-obsessed romance reader.

"See?" Yuushi reminded, "You need to rest."

Flopping back down against the pillow, I groaned, "But my match starts in an hour, Yuushi!" I exclaimed, "I need to be there for my team!"

A chuckle was heard, "You're staying where you are, Kenya," Yuushi declared, "That is final."

Frowning, I glared daggers at my annoying cousin, "But I also need to see Hikari," I argued, "She could be in danger you know."

Glancing up from his novel, Yuushi studied me for a short second before suddenly snapping his book shut. Taking off his round spectacles, Yuushi gave them a small clean with the corner of his blouse.

"About this 'Hikari'-" he began, professionally slipping his glasses back on, "You never told me about her."

I blinked at his statement, "I didn't really see the point…." I replied, "I mean, you did say you're busy with the nationals and stuff-"

Yuushi merely flashed an unconvinced look, "Is she in some sort of trouble, Kenya?" he questioned

"No-" I answered with a risen eyebrow, "What makes you think that?"

Placing his book down on the coffee table, Yuushi folded his arms, "You never mentioned anything about asking out a girl," he stated, "I'm curious at how you, out of all people in the world- can suddenly make things run extra smoothly without anyone noticing till the last minute."

Feeling my lips curl up, I snickered, "I am an Oshitari you know," I pronounced

"I am aware of that," Yuushi muttered

Turning my head away from the creepy staring cousin of mine, I slowly allowed my eyes to drift out the window. The sky is blue, the clouds are white- man did I wish I could play tennis right now. Oh wait- did I just say window?

"Hey Yuushi," I uttered, croaking my head back around, "I'm thirsty from all that talking- so could you kindly fetch me a glass of water?"

(Hikari's POV)

Surprisingly to say, hospital mornings were rather peaceful and quiet- much unlike the usual hustle and bustle of patients, nurses and doctors. Following the directions Shiraishi-kun had given me, I carefully made way towards the fourth floor- where Kenya-kun's room was located.

Floating up three sets of stairs, I soon arrived on the fourth floor. Slipping through the wide doors, I landed myself along the modern corridors dotted with various doors leading to occupied rooms. Trotting down the noiseless corridor, I quickly scanned past each label that was written beside the door.

Twirling around a corner and strolling down another few meters, I finally came across the label that broadcasted Kenya-kun's name to the whole world. Sighing, I stepped forward and placed a light knock against the door.

"Kenya-kun?" I announced before slowly sliding the door open, "Ken-"

Blinking with confusion, I stared at the empty room sitting before me-the window was open, a cool breeze carefully flowing in. The hospital bed was vacant, its attached medical cords hanging lifeless over the edge of the white bed covers.

"Akatsuka-san?"

Snapping around at the sudden call to my voice, I blinked after seeing Kenya-kun's cousin- Yuushi-kun standing in the doorway with quite a surprised expression.

"What're you doing here, Akatsuka-san?" he questioned before stepping into the room and frowning at the sight of a lost figure

I glanced between Yuushi-kun and the empty room, "I-I was just hoping to see Kenya-kun," I replied, "But it seems-"

Ignoring the final details of my sentence, Yuushi-kun rushed right across to the room and flung a nearby closet open. Peering inside, Yuushi-kun instantly scowled before slamming the doors shut and hurried to the open window.

"I should've known-" he swore quietly to himself

I felt my eyebrows dip, "Did something happen to Kenya-kun?" I asked, slowly approaching the window

A sigh was heard, "His gone…." Yuushi-kun muttered, "Again."
