"Damn it! How the hell did we wind up in this situation?!" Heavy, rapidly thudding footsteps, against thickly carpeted floor.

"Don't ask me! You were the one going on about 'being a man' and whatnot! Whoa-!" A swift retort, followed by flailing arms on an unexpected stumble.

"Both of you, shut up! And get ready to swing again! They're getting close!" The end of an argument, brought about by a sharply tongued level-head.

In the third hallway above the main staircase, the trio of Kilik, Ox and Havar were currently getting a workout with their shovels, and even managing to throw in a few punches and kicks, at least in Kilik's case. But being chased full-force down a straight path? Yeah, it certainly wasn't a great experience, even if it was thrilling.

"Why us? We have the weakest weapons - no offense to you Maka, wherever you are, I know you're the one who grabbed them - and we're getting swarmed by all these guards! It's ridiculous! If we were gonna have to fight so much, couldn't we at least have gotten a better arsenal?!" Kilik had managed to knock back one enemy with the metal shovel head, and had winded another with the handle. The first target staggered closer to him, and this time he caught him in the face with a fist. That took him down for good. "That's another one out!"

"Well, perhaps we wouldn't be in the situation if somebody else hadn't been so eager to get the jump on his enemies, striking a pose while he was at it?" Havar was now looking across at his roommate, who was adjusting his thick framed glasses. In response, Ox huffed and shook his head. "I wasn't 'striking a pose', I was calculating my landing! And it wasn't like I was the one who brought those guys there, anyway!" He swung out with a yell, sending another guard stumbling away.

So far, adding in the one that Kilik had felled, they'd only been able to knock out two of their pursuers. There were still four more who were taking a pretty good beating. The boys were thanking their stars that they hadn't been armed with guns at least - knock on wood - but...these were grown men. They weren't so easy to tackle in a swarm.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah! You just messed up on your strike!" Kilik swung again, to drive back the guard that was advancing on him. "How many of these fools are there, anyway?! And why are they all concentrated up here?"

A shrill whistle pierced the squabble. "Don't let them get away! Keep wearing them down!" One of the grunts was rallying the others. "And get on communications with the control room! We can't let them through this hallway!" All three boys heard this, and suddenly, it all clicked into place. That was the reason for the high volume of security? Just their luck. Looks like the extra crowding was really a blessing in disguise. As the trio exchanged knowing smiles, a plan began to form among them.

"You still got some energy left to spare, Ox?" Havar was regarding his enemies carefully, taking in their locations. His stance shifted. He'd played enough games to at least remember a few of the positions executed by the characters. He was using those as a base and going from there. It hadn't failed him so far. He knew that was probably how Ox was running too, as the male nodded and prepared to lunge once more.

"Yeah, as long as I don't keep arguing with you." Havar smirked, and looked over to Kilik. "And you?"

The boy cracked his knuckles on one hand by flexing the fingers. "Yeah, about as ready as I'll ever be. Real men and all that noise, right?" He too was readying himself to lash out. They now had a target, a destination. It was just a matter of reaching it.

Their opponents were starting to close in around them. Two behind, two ahead. In order to get a head start by allowing Kilik to run up from the middle and avoiding the guards in the rear, Havar and Ox would have to drive back the pair in the front, then follow directly after Kilik to prevent them from being caught by the ones remaining. It would be tricky, but if they worked together, they could pull it off. After all, they were friends. Friends who had each other's through thick and thin. They wouldn't let a situation like this get the better of them.

One...two...three! "Now! Go!" Stomping forwards with a strong thrust, Ox managed to catch his opponent fully in the stomach with the front of the metal shovel. He let out a gasping groan as his knees buckled and he fell forwards. He's down! At the same time, Havar had smashed his target in the face straight on with the flat side of the head. He staggered backwards, dazed and bloody. That made two! "Kilik!"

"I'm already on it!" He flew past them before they had a chance to react. Jumping up, they sprinted to fill in the gap, and escape the reach of the two flanking guards, who were now starting to panic. One was fumbling for a walkie-talkie at his waist. "This is patrol to control room! We have hostiles heading straight for you! I repeat, hostile intruders on your way! Initiate lockdown procedures now!"

A current of panic shot through the trio of runners. "Shit! They're gonna barricade the place!" Kilik's eyes narrowed, and he sprang ahead. Past the third door, and then the fourth. Havar and Ox were at his heels, as were the guards. One of them tried to make a leaping grab for Ox. But he was prepared.

"I already told you..." he began, swinging the shovel upwards and back behind him, catching the grunt in the jaw with the handle. "...don't mess with the LIGHTNING KING!" The battle cry seemed to reverberate off the walls. Havar shook his head as they continued running, one guard left on their tail. "How you can do that at a time like this, I will never understand."

Ox just grinned at him. "But at least it worked!"

"Yo, there it is!" The last set of double doors at the end of the hallway was wide open. But there was a grunt standing outside, obviously to meet up with the others. As soon as he spotted them drawing close, he began to scramble back towards the entrance to bolt it. They had to catch him before that happened!

Dive! "RAAH!" With a solid leap, Kilik had tackled the man, sending them both flying towards the wall. His target hit the surface first, and fell down with a thud. He took most of the impact, so Kilik was able to stand up and shake himself off. He looked over at his friends, who had managed to slip inside. Ox was waving a hand frantically.

"Come on, get over here already!" Kilik did so, just as the last guard came up to the door. They slammed it in his face, and heard a pained series of swears from beyond the wooden barrier. Wood, really? In a place like this? This was the entrance to their all-important control room, after all. It seemed like a requirement to keep it adequately protected. With a click of the locks, Kilik had sealed it, and turned to face the interior of the room.

"Eh...?!" There before them was a wall full of various screens. Most of them were dark at the moment, though. The ones that were lit were showing various areas from a very familiar place to the boys - it was Shibusen. And on a few of the center panels, they could see erratic movement and hear strange sounds. Below the images was a long strip with all manner of flashing lights, squares and buttons. It resembled an extra-long keyboard. That had to have been the main controls for the equipment set up at the school!

But between them and that hardware, were three more guards. And they didn't look very happy about being disturbed. As the grunt outside now started to pound on the door, the boys tried to figure out a new strategy to get to their goal. Havar was paying close attention as the figures began to draw nearer to them.

"Kilik, you have the com link. Get on it and let everyone know the situation. Hurry up, because we need you here too." Ox was watching warily, while the male pressed the button in his ear, and tried to send out a message.

"Hey, is this thing on? This is Kilik - we've found the control room! That's about all we can say for now, 'cause we got-" He stopped in mid-sentence as one of the guards suddenly flipped up his coat and began pulling out a pistol. His eyes widened. "Shit!" Havar and Ox had seen it as well, and were already reacting to the new threat.

"Scramble!" They all dove in separate directions, as the guard fired off a shot where they had been standing.

"Urk!" Kilik had decided to take a chance and tackle the guard directly in front of him while hoping to avoid the bullet. He was standing to the upper side of the gun-wielder. The man went down in one hit, just like the one in the hall. There was less room in here than there though, and he had to jump up and keep moving when the marksman had redirected his sights on the moving target. Since Kilik was the closest to the controls, he was the one that needed to be taken out.

"Hold still, you-!" He fired another shot at his feet, and as Kilik jumped away, one more bullet just grazed his arm. He could practically feel the charge of fear coursing through him, at how close he'd come to becoming a living training dummy. The round embedded in the wall beside the camera screens, as the other remaining grunt let out a yell.

"Hey! Be careful, you buffoon! Don't damage the equipment! Or Lady Arachne will be really mad!" Now the gunman was sheepish, scratching his head. "Whoops, sorry. Don't wanna make Mother angry..." He had lowered the gun in his hand. Havar and Ox were looking on in silent disbelief. When had this become the setup to a slapstick routine? Just what kind of guards were these?!

"Awk!" Ox had taken this opportunity to slam his shovel head into the back of the skull of the grunt before him. At the same time, Havar had used his weapon to knock the legs out from under the shooter, who also hadn't been paying attention. He cried out as he fell over, and the gun clattered from his grasp. He made a desperate bid to reclaim it, but was effectively stopped by Havar, who, on a split-second impulse, dove across to grab it, kicking him in the face as he did so. Now he was aiming it with one hand while keeping the shovel in the other and pushing himself up. Ox was looking over the scene in amazement. "We...we actually did it..."

Suddenly there was a voice, booming from seemingly nowhere. "Hello?! This is Kid! Can you read me?" Kilik was grabbing the side of his head, frantically removing the com link from his ear. Bullets were one thing, but Kid might've just deafened him. "Have you secured the-"

However, their friend was effectively cut off by a loud, unearthly screeching noise from his end. That sound...it couldn't possibly be a human, right? There was no offered answer; the line went quiet, and the three boys could only exchange looks. "What was that?"

"I dunno, man..." said Kilik from where he stood in front of the controls. The other two came over to join him, as he looked down at the silent com link in his hand. "Maybe we don't wanna find out."

Ox straightened his posture. "Well, whatever it is, we just have to have faith that they can handle it." Havar gave a nod at the male's words. "I agree. Now..." He turned his attention to the screens and controls. Even behind his shades however, his expression darkened, realizing exactly what was going on before them. "No...we're too late..."

"What, what is it?" Kilik leaned in closer, and his eyes widened, glasses reflecting the glowing images. "No way! The sprinklers are active already! They're attacking each other! Don't tell me it's no good?! I thought we had more time!"

In a flash, Ox was scanning over the buttons frantically, pressing anything he could get his hands on. "Come on, come on!" Kilik looked at him in shock. "What are you doing?! How's that gonna help?!"

The male get out a frustrated growl, sweat dripping down the side of his face, past the corner of his lenses. "What does it look like?! I'm trying to shut down the system!"

Havar raised an eyebrow. "Shut it down, or destroy it?" Ox shook his head. "Does it even matter?! We have to stop the flow of that toxin! Even if its been rigged into the sprinklers, if it's operating by controls like these, then it's probably an independent system! Which means if we can cut it off here, either us or them could find a way to regularly trigger the waterworks at the school! To wash it away! That might help, even just a little!"

At this, Havar considered his roommate's words carefully, as well as his own response. It was a good idea, in theory. And right now, they didn't have any other options. They were here now, they had to do something! Everyone was counting on them!

"Well, you heard the man!" Jumping right into things once again, Kilik brought his fist down on the nearest set of keys, causing a series of beeps and clicks. "Think of it like a fighting game, and start button mashing!" Yep, that was a great analogy. With that, Havar finally joined in, and they got to work. It wasn't too late. It couldn't be. They would find a way to save everyone. There had to be a way out of this!

Madness could not be allowed to win!

…...

"What did you say?!"

Upstairs, still gathered in the hallway with Noah and the younger Mosquito relative, Kid and the twins were looking on with a mixture of emotions at the new sight before them. Prior to this, things had been tense but uneventful since Noah had shown up and shot the Vampire-esque man.

The first had gone into something of a tirade, his eyes filled with greed and avarice as he described his 'collection' lovingly. It seemed to be made up of a variety of things, from random items that he'd ascribed certain value, to moments in his career that sounded far more sinister and disquieting than illustrious. Even people - or at least, their lives before he'd apparently taken them - filled his archives, probably the most disturbing admittance of all. And oh, but how he was so looking forward to adding Kid to his list!

It was creepy, to receive all of this sudden ill-intentioned enthusiasm. The boy had almost been tempted to shoot Noah then and there, just to get him to shut up. Even Black*Star wasn't this nauseating in his pride, nor was he constantly heaping it all on one person! Well, aside from himself, anyway. But still! It was tolerable compared to this! He didn't sound like some deluded, entitled creepy hoarder!

Then, an interruption. The com link in Kid's ear had gone off, and he'd been able to hear that message, the one he'd been waiting for: Kilik and his group had found the controls! Success! However, he'd been cut off by a sudden yell from the speaker, and then the line had gone silent.

Kid was going to respond sooner, but he'd been startled by a groan of agony from Mosquito, who was still lying against the wall holding his shoulder. The male noticed that he seemed paler, and was starting to sweat. Even from where he stood, he could see the faint dampness and sheen to his skin. He was regarding Noah with a sickened look of stifled rage. "That bullet...that bullet!" He couldn't seem to find the words he wanted.

Noah had looked at him then, with a smug little grin. Just what had he been up to? "Oh, so did you discover my secret?" Mosquito was panting hard, wheezing practically, and Kid's companions were starting to worry. Liz was, anyway, being verbal as always in her observations - whether she wanted to notice these things or not. "Oi, Kid - what's going on here?! Things are getting kinda freaky!" What sorta people are we dealing with?? she'd thought at the time.

Patty had just been looking on with wide eyes. "Heeey, his aaarm! It's twitching!" Liz had looked over at the comment, squinting. "Huh? What's twitching?"

Kid had been trying to get back in touch once more with the others before things really blew up on his end, however that may've been. He had a feeling that Noah's arrival had just escalated the situation a few degrees. He'd had a plan, but now everything was thrown out of balance. This man, this Noah, what had he done? Just how bad was it about to get...? "Hello?! This is Kid! Can you read me?" He'd listened with bated breath, for any sort of response. Nothing. "Have you secured the-"

And that was when it had happened. Mosquito had emitted such a sound, the likes of which Kid had never heard a human make, and one he hoped he'd never have to hear again. His hand had effectively dropped from where it had been pressing the link in his ear. Instantly, the connection went dead. He was looking over at Mosquito now, with an expression of baffled horror.

Beside him, Liz was trying not to gag. "Oh gross, what is that?! What's happening to him?!" Patty was oohing over the sight, seemingly more fascinated than perturbed. "He's aaall split up."

Noah was starting to chuckle as he regarded the male on the ground, who was beginning to, in no uncertain terms, fall apart. His skin was tearing, caving in from the inside out as the underneath was eaten away in pieces. His clothes were becoming looser on him with the disintegration of body mass, and Noah's laughter was getting louder. Through the raucous symphony, he cried out "The bullet was laced!"

"What did you say?!" roared Mosquito, in abject pain.

And here they were now. By this point, Mosquito's condition had worsened. It was beyond noticeable that there was something wrong. He was breathing frantically, watching in horror as his body crumbled away. He was screaming bloody murder - it was gruesome to watch. Noah was enjoying himself, however. As expected of someone so out of touch with reality.

"I know you've been dabbling in that woman's genetics research. You and your entire stupid line are so eager to get your hands on any sort of power, just to suit that woman." The fact that Noah didn't seem to regard this man or his supposed ilk as human was almost as unsettling as the scene before them. Almost. Mosquito's eyes widened. "Don't you dare speak ill of Lady Arach-"

That was when his chest began to sink in. He was gasping awkwardly.

Undeterred, Noah continued on. "As I was saying, the labs got hold of a sample from the last battle, with your daft grandfather. There were traces of the counter-poison Medusa created left behind, and they were being cultivated for our own research purposes. And well, you know how I love to collect things...so I collected some for myself, and then I got to thinking...could I make it stronger?" Mosquito's face was starting to collapse. The life had just about left his eyes. Liz had already turned away, burying her face in Patty's shoulder. "I can't watch this, I'm gonna be sick."

Kid couldn't quite believe what he was seeing. What sort of people were they dealing with here?! Concentrated madness, genetic research, good ol' fashioned gunfights, and terror plots. This was a big mess of a nightmare, but the worst part of all was that it was real. And there was no way out but to fight. Tightening his grip on his guns, Kid wrenched his gaze away, and turned to face Noah.

Mosquito had been reduced to a pile of meat chunks, half-dissolved bones, hair and cloth. Trying his best to keep his eyes from returning to what was left, the boy regarded the man before him with a new loathing. "You killed off your own comrade. Why? Was that really necessary?"

"Mm...no." Kid blinked. Well, that was a quickly blunt admission. Noah gave him an evil smile. "But I like collecting things, you see. And since I went through the trouble of collecting this, I wanted to know what it would look like if I used my super destructive serum on a living test subject. Since he was also threatening my chances of catching you as well, it made sense for me to dispatch him as such.

"And besides," he added, taking a step closer to Kid, "I didn't like him anyway."

"Stay back!" Liz had gotten over her previous nausea, in a feat of Herculean strength, and was now focusing her gun on Noah as well. Patty too was ready to pull the trigger on him if necessary. The man chuckled at the sight before him, pulling his hat down, shading his eyes. "It's no fun if I just shoot you..." Did that mean he had a weapon on his person as well, or...?

"Huh?" From out of nowhere it seemed, Noah pulled out what appeared to be a book. But when he opened it, Kid saw that it was hollow. A storage device, with such a distinctly misleading shape? Pulling out a small vial, strapped among many others to the inside, and throwing it against the ground, he raised his arm upwards. "Arise, from my collection!" Something was beginning to sizzle against the carpet, taking shape in the puddle on the floor, and Kid was certain it couldn't be anything good. The more it swelled, the more details he was able to notice.

It wasn't any sort of creature he recognized on this Earth. It was swelling with every breath - the whole damn thing seemed to be one giant lung, growing larger the more air it sucked in. It was pale, like daikon, but with a bruised tint to its skin. It had two deformed arms that appeared completely nonfunctional, until it suddenly pushed its massive body up off the ground, soaring and landing just a foot away from Kid and his companions. It landed with a horrible squishing plop sound, and Liz let out a wail of disbelief.

"This is not what I signed up for! This was a rescue mission, not survival-horror!" Patty was giggling, a typical reaction for her - nerves of steel, that one - as she aimed both guns at the now gasping mass. "Insane cancer, heh!" Liz stepped forwards to partially shield her, while placing herself beside Kid. "How the heck are we gonna take out that?"

Noah was regarding them with a wicked grin. Kid's eyes narrowed, as he took aim with both of his pistols. The answer was clutched tight in all of their hands. "The only way we can. With firepower." Patty cheered, and Liz whined in defeat. "I was afraid you'd say that..." As shaky as she was though, the taller blonde nevertheless took up her stance between Kid and Patty. She was only operating with one weapon, not two; she had to make sure her shots counted.

The creature let out another awful gasp, before suddenly rushing at them on its malformed hands. Kid readied himself. "Now! Start shooting! And don't let it reach you!" The battle had begun. Noah watched everything unfold with a gleam in his eye, enjoying the sounds of gunfire and shouting as he surveyed his prey wearing himself out. Yes, yes, excellent. Superb! There was no way he could take it out with just mere bullets. Stupid children, overestimating themselves. His collections were not to be taken lightly. Soon enough, that Shibusen heir would be right where he wanted him: in the palm of his hand, ripe for the picking after exhausting all other resources.

"Rgh!" Kid dove and rolled to avoid being pressed by the monster. As it turned to look at him, its underside lifted and revealed a large gaping mouth with sharp, jagged, uneven teeth. Both Liz and Ptty noticed this, and even in the midst of combat, shared a knowing look between them. They knew what was coming next.

Kid felt a vein twitch in his forehead. This creature was an unsymmetrical mess.

"You disgraceful slob! Be gone from my sight!" Kid began shooting furiously, sending the being stumbling back at least a foot or so. Now, it was rounding on the sisters, who started heading further down the hall. Kid went to follow them -

- only to crash face-first into something strong and solid, that seemingly materialized out of nowhere from beyond one of the many doors. Whatever it was, it hurt. He nearly dropped his guns. Rubbing his face with his arm, he glared upwards at the obstruction. What the hell could have possibly gotten into his way to...

"Eh?" Now Noah was looking over too. In fact, it seemed like everyone had stopped, even the monster itself, to gape at this new stranger - stranger? - who stood before Kid.

He was tall, and powerfully built. With his mass and features, he honestly resembled a wolf on two legs. He had short, spiked hair and one eye that appeared to be blind. Or was he just wearing a contact? Above it was a tattoo of the words 'No Future' in all caps. There was something attached to his arm, but Kid couldn't make it out as the man was turned away from him at an angle.

Where had he come from? They'd have noticed if someone like him had been outside. If he'd been hiding in one of the many rooms in this wing, why had he only come out now? He obviously wasn't one of theirs, and from the look on Noah's face he wasn't with Arachnophobia, either. So, that could only mean...

"You're working with Medusa!" The man blinked owlishly at Kid's outburst. "Uh, yeah." That was obvious, of course Free knew that. This guy, whoever he was, didn't need to remind him. He was on the job right now, for crying out loud! He couldn't forget that if he tried!

Hey, speaking of which, how did he know that in the first place? And if he knew that much, then maybe...

"Hey." He leaned in close, startling Kid. The firefight and all involved seemed to have frozen entirely at his presence. The boy backed up quickly, not wanting this oversized man coming in his space and throwing him off balance. That beast, the one that had been summoned, had already done more than enough of that as it was. Luckily, Free made no other move to follow him. But his next question was enough to send him for a loop anyway. "Do you know...where the kitchen is?"

There was a pause. Kid was attempting to understand what the man was asking him. Had anyone else heard this inquiry? "...the kitchen. Where is the kitchen?"

Free nodded. "Yeah, that's what I wanna know. I got sent here to take care of things, and then I got hungry, so I started looking for the kitchen. But then I heard you guys, and didn't wanna come out, 'cause I didn't really wanna fight on an empty stomach." Well, that was one piece of the puzzle explained. "But I'm too hungry, so I came out to see if I could slip by. Guess not, though."

He scratched at his head, completely oblivious to the shock that had descended over the impromptu arena. Kid was deadpanning, and Liz couldn't believe her ears. Was this really happening, in the middle of a battle? Once more, Free spoke. "So, do you know where the kitchen is?"

At this, Liz finally had to butt in. "Why on Earth would you look for a kitchen upstairs? And why is this the time to be asking such things?! Why wouldn't a pro thug remember to eat before all of...of...this?!" Patty giggled at her sister's question plus exasperation, and Free merely gave her a baffled look. Was she that dense?

"Why not? They've got a lot of underground stuff here, so why not put the kitchen upstairs, so when they cook the smells will go down the house?" Had he actually just answered her seriously? He'd thought of a ridiculous answer for her bewildered inquiry. Patty was full-on laughing now. Kid wondered if the universe itself was just having a good chuckle at his expense.

And Noah had had enough of this. Commanding the monster once more, he sent it after Free this time around. "You are interfering with my collecting, and I have no desire to add you to my list, intruder. Now leave." In a second, the white mass was running and lunging for the man.

Kid ducked and dove away, as Liz and Patty cried out. Even if he turned around, this stranger was going to be hit at full force by the creature! There was no way to avoid it!

A/N: And there you have it, the end of Chapter 36! How are y'all doing? Still along for the ride?

I apologize for the delay, & if things seem a bit disjointed at the moment. Right now, there are multiple things happening in-universe, w/more than one POV to consider. So yes, there is a bit of jumping around. But hopefully, it's not too choppy, and what is shown between each snippet of current events is engaging enough to keep you entertained.

So, in this update, we finally see the introduction of our Manly Trio: Ox, Havar, & Kilik! I know these guys don't get a whole lotta love in-series - maybe even in-Fandom too, IDK, so I did my best to give them some time in the spotlight here, & make it worthwhile. They're fun characters to tinker around with, &, for whatever reason, I can just really see them being gamer types? IDK why, it just seems to fit. So, I tried to weave that in w/their stories & skill sets here, while hopefully not screwing up characterization in the process. As you can clearly see, they have a BIG role to play in this mission. The fate of Shibusen is currently resting in their hands! Can they shut off the toxins in time?!

Also, we returned, once more, to check in on Kid & the twins! Last we saw, they'd run into Noah, after first being cornered by another Mosquito. And - what's this? Celebration at the earlier success of the boys above is cut short, by the sudden unexpected demise of Mosquito himself, at none other than the mad collector's hands! What fresh hell is this?!

It seems that Arachne - or possibly Noah himself - has been experimenting w/more than just madness, however. Looks like Noah's got a veritable army or terrors at his beck & call. It's up to our lovably dysfunctional trio to deal w/them, the best way they know how, no matter if their experience is lacking. And, wouldn't you know it, they just can't catch a break. Of all people, here comes Free to crash the party, bringing the fight to a screeching halt, if only momentarily, w/an innocent if awkward inquiry.

Now, the question remains: what will his fate be, since he's seemingly on a crash course w/oblivion, at the hands - erm, teeth & mass - of this ghastly monstrosity? [Also: I threw a 'Silent Hill' reference in this sequence somewhere. Can anyone find it? :3 ] You'll just have to wait & see, dear Readers. Hopefully, the answers, whenever they may arrive, will be worth the wait.

As always, feedback is welcomed, encouraged & appreciated. Everything's in overdrive, & we're not about to slow down anytime soon. Next Chapter: A look back at the damages among Shibusen - is everybody okay? Plus, two sides of good and one of unintentional evil, versus a miniature army in a free-for-all! Also - wait, what?! WHAT is Free doing?! And HOW is he doing it?!

Until then, take care, everybody. Happy holidays.
