#36 - Insomnia

Mai frowned as she walked past her little brother's bedroom, not hearing a sound. Yuugi snored very loudly, and the twenty-one year old woman would often find herself trying to fall asleep with her earphones in to soothing instrumentals in an attempt to block out the noise in the room next door on particularly bad days. But the sixteen year old had been very quiet recently, which worried her greatly. For the past few nights her sleep had been tranquil, but rather than relief, she felt nothing but concern. Why wasn't Yuugi sleeping?

She heard a giggle, and sighed. Was he honestly playing video games? At three AM? She rolled her eyes, knocking loudly on the door and opening it without further warning, earning a rather irritated and yet sleepy shout from their grandfather. "Sorry..." She murmured quietly, glancing towards the elder man's room. She faced her brother's room again and stepped in. The boy was lying in his bed, looking at her curiously, no handheld gaming system or controller in sight, and no whirring noises to signify a larger console being on. She knew that he was unlikely to switch off a console mid-game just because of her; he had mourned the loss of his last checkpoint for hours he last time she'd unplugged his XBOX while he was mid-level.

"What's wrong, Mai?" He asked slightly sleepily, but not in a way that made it seem that he'd been asleep.

"You're still awake." It wasn't a question, and he knew it.

"Ah..." The boy sighed, rolling on to his side and pulling the covers up further. "I can't sleep... I'm tired..." He yawned, closing his eyes, but she could tell he wasn't asleep.

"Have insomnia, Chibi-Chan?" She asked. "Maybe you should try sleeping pills for a couple of nights... There's some in the medicine cabinet..."

He grumbled slightly at the affectionate nickname she'd picked out to annoy him, but replied nonetheless. "I should be fine... I'll probably get some sleep later on..."

"Riiiiight." She muttered dryly.

BZZZZZT!

He yelped at the noise coming from under his covers, and her eyes narrowed as he grabbed his phone, frantically checking for messages.

"Ahah!" She smirked victoriously. "So that's why you haven't been sleeping!" She ran over and after a couple of minutes of tugging and fighting over it, finally had the phone within her grasp. Clicking the button and swiping the screen, she frowned, thrusting the phone in Yuugi's face. "Unlock it."

"Huh?"

"It's got an unlock pattern! Unlock it!"

"No!"

She grinned. "Oh? Something to hide?"

"N-no..." Face slightly red, the boy took the phone from her, unlocking it before handing it back.

"Hmm..." She checked the messages, before grinning. "I don't recognize this 'Yami' person's name. Who is she? A girlfriend?" She grinned teasingly, and he blushed even more, trying to snatch the phone back.

"No!" His expression turned pleading. "Please give it back..."

"Not until you tell me who she is."

Yuugi pulled a face. "Yami's a guy." His answer was spoken in a rather deadpan tone. "Can I have my phone back now, please?"

"Weird... Yami's a girl's name isn't it? Oh, well... If you say so..." She snorted as she read the text he'd received. "Wait, so if it isn't a girl texting... 'This your boyfriend?"

Yuugi almost choked on the air. "Huh?! Mai?! Where the hell did that come from?!"

Her grin widened. "You didn't deny it!"

When he continued to stay silent, she blinked. "Wow, Yuugi... I was only kidding. So he really... You're actually..."

He nodded, looking slightly embarrassed. "Sort of... We got talking a few months ago... We've been texting all the time."

She paused for a moment, before nodding. "I'll trust your judgement about this guy, but if he hurts you..." She growled slightly. "Let me know right away, you hear me?! It's not easy, finding the right guy." She hugged him tightly, causing him to squeak in surprise. She continued in a softer tone. "Look hun... I'm happy you've found someone, just don't rush into anything, okay?" He nodded, before a confused frown formed on his face.

"Umm... Mai?"

"Yeah?"

"Why... Why are you okay with this?" He averted his eyes. "I thought you'd be angry at me..." It was her turn to frown.

"What? For being gay?"

He pouted slightly, quickly stopping when he realized what he was doing. "Huh? I'm not gay..."

"Ah. Bi, then?"

He blushed slightly from the embarrassment of hearing it said out loud. "I think so... I've never liked another guy before."

She chuckled slightly, ruffling his hair. "Chibi-Chan, why would I be mad at you? You can't change who you are, and frankly, I wouldn't want you to. You're my brother, and as long as you're not up to anything stupid or being hurt, I'm completely fine with whatever you do with your life. Besides, even if this guy isn't right for you, there's plenty of people out there, and I hope you find someone special, no matter who they are."

He smiled warmly at her, hugging her close. "Thanks, Mai. I really needed to hear that. Hopefully it won't come to that, though... He's really nice!"

"I'm glad to hear it..." She winked, prying his arms from her waist and getting up to leave. She stopped at the doorway and called to him in an amused tone, "And remember, actually get some sleep! I'm actually starting to miss your snoring!"

"Okay..." He yawned in agreement as she left the room, resting his head on the pillows as his eyes slid shut.

Barely a second later, his eyes snapped open again as he registered her words. "...What do you mean, snoring?!"

I like how this one turned out; I love having Yuugi and Mai be brother and sister.

And to ASAP Rocky, because I forgot to say last time - Yes, I DO plan to make Peaceful into a multi-chapter, but I don't know how long it'll be before I can. I have a few story ideas, and I still need tow work out a proper plot.
