"I cannot believe you!" Maya's voice was full of rage. "How can you do this, Riles?!"
Riley looks down guilty, her brown doe eyes fixated on the floor. "It's not something I wanted to happen, Maya." She looks slowly at her best friend. "It's just happening."
"Just happening?!" Maya places a hand on her hip angrily. "How can leaving be 'just happening?" Maya goes and sits at the bay window in her and Andrew's apartment. The frosty snow was sticking to the window and Maya could feel the ice window pressed against her back. Right now, she didn't care. She cared that she was going to lose her best friend.
"Maya -"
"You're being selfish, Riley!" Maya says, shooting up from her seat.
Riley's eyes widened. "Selfish?" Her voice is tiny, but it quickly gets louder. "How am I being selfish?!"
"You're only thinking about yourself!" Maya could feel tears about to fall. She was mad - no she was pissed. "You're my best friend! You're my best friend and you're going to leave?! Why? Because you don't wanna be cramped up in the city? Well . . . Riley, if you haven't noticed you can't just get up and leave! Out of all the people, you should understand that you were the only person for my entire childhood to not leave me!" Maya's voice is hoarse and she looks down at the floor. "You're my sister. I can't lose anymore family."
Riley swallows thickly. "Maya . . . I have to do this." Maya looks up slowly to see Riley had tears down her face. "I can't stay here. I'm suffocating here. I need to -"
"I get it." Maya interrupts. She looks at her friend. "We all have to make decisions that not everyone is comfortable with . . . Never mind. You should probably get going." Maya crosses her arms over her chest.
"Maya -"
"Andrew will be home soon." Maya said heading to the kitchen. She starts to pull out pots and pans and Riley heads for the door.
Just as Riley was about to step out the door she turns on her heel and looks at her friend. "Maya, we're still friends. Right?" There's desperation in her voice and Maya stares at her.
"Yeah, Riles." She gives a fake smile. "Of course."
Riley hesitates before heading outside and to her apartment.
"Maya?" Andrew walks into the apartment. "Maya, what's wrong?" He sees his wife in the kitchen, staring at the stove. His hair is dusted with white snow and his cheeks are a little red. He takes off his coat and walks to her, wrapping his arms around her waist and leaning his head against her shoulder. "Hey."
"Hey." Her voice is quiet.
"What's wrong?"
Maya turns and wraps her arms around his neck. "Riley is . . . Thinking about leaving, with Lucas."
Andrew's eyebrows come forward in confusion. "What?"
Maya nods. "Yeah . . ." Andrew frowns as his wife looks away with tears in her eyes. She turns her back to him and continues to make dinner. She sniffs loudly and Andrew could tell this was more than just nothing at all.
Andrew slowly reaches and turns off the stove. Maya shoots her head to him and Andrew looks her in the eyes. "Maya . . . Come here." He opens his arms to her and she gladly steps into them, their bodies molding together. He strokes her blonde locks as she cries into his chest.
"She's not supposed to leave." Maya's muffled sobs cut Andrew like a knife. He hated to see her like this. He couldn't do anything. He bends down and swoops his arm under her legs, and then he carries her bridal style to their bedroom.
He lays down with her in his arms and they face each other. "Maya, just talk. I'll listen."
Maya sniffs. "She's supposed to never leave me. She was never a leaver . . . All my life, I've been left." Her eyes look into his. The next words that come out of her mouth kill him.
"What do I do wrong? Why don't people want to be around me? Why do they always . . ." She doesn't finish before breaking into another heartbreaking sob. Andrew just pulls her against his chest and kisses her forehead, telling her how much he loves her. He would never leave her. Ever.
"Maya," Shawn says as Alex sits on his lap. "Listen, I know you're upset but you can't always agree with your friends. Riley's an adult. If she wants to leave . . . There's nothing we can do to stop her." Alex looks up at his father and smiles.
"Dadda." Alex chirps and Shawn grins widely. Maya stares at the toddler and smiles slightly. Alex was definitely Shawn's son. He looked exactly like him, especially with the hazel eyes.
"Dad . . . I don't know." Maya sighs. "She can't just leave. We're best friends."
Shawn frowns. He didn't have anything else to say to Maya. He was baffled. He stares at his daughter.
"It's pointless to dream dreams, right?" Maya's voice hurts.
"Maya Patricia Hunter." Shawn groans. "Don't think that there's anything wrong with dreaming. Just because Riley is leaving doesn't mean that she's jumping off the face of the earth. She's still going to be around, just not as much."
Alex crawls out of Shawn's lap and proceeded to crawl across the couch to Maya, who took him in her arms. He grips the end of a strand of Maya's curls and smiles. Maya looks at Alex and smiles. She looks at Shawn.
"I guess . . . I don't know. I don't know what to do anymore. I can't stop her, yet she just can't leave." Alex leans back against her chest. Maya looks down at Alex. "Can I take Alex for the weekend? Maybe give you and Mom some time alone?"
Shawn's eyes widened. "Um . . . Sure. Do you think you can handle it?"
"You know it." Maya smiles.
"O - Okay." Shawn stands up and starts to prepare a bag. The diaper bag is on the counter in the kitchen and he puts fresh bottles and other baby things in it. He stops a second and he glances at Maya. "Are you going to be okay, kiddo?" He looks at the girl and waits.
"Yeah." Maya looks at him. She means it too. "I can't stop Riley from going, no matter how much I hate it. She's gotta do what she has to do. I have some more important things I need to focus on." She looks at Alex for the millionth time and places him on her hip as she stands. She walks over to the Shawn and he hands her the diaper bag.
"Well, just as long as you're feeling better about this." Shawn tells her. He leans in and kisses her cheek and then looks at his son. "You be good for your sister, okay buddy? Then you'll be back here with me and Mommy." He kisses his son's soft brown hair and hugs Maya goodbye before she heads for home and to her husband.
"Shawn?" Katy asks confused as he walks into Topanga's bakery. Katy had recently started to work there. Her face lit up all the same when she saw him though. She walks from the counter and walks up to him, giving a quick peck on the cheek. "I was just about to close. Is everything okay?"
Shawn nods and takes a seat at one of the man couches of the bakery. "Just Maya." Katy takes a seat next to him and props up her feet on the small coffee table.
"Why?" Her face is worried. "What's wrong with Maya -"
"Everything's fine, Kate." Shawn says, holding a hand up before she can worry anymore. "Just . . . Maya's really broken up about this whole Riley leaving thing. I mean, I don't know how I'd feel if Cory and Topanga or you just left. I'd be heartbroken . . . She says she's fine, but she's just upset." Shawn sighs. "I just don't know what to do in order to help her."
Katy stares at him and scoots closer to him. She wraps her arm around his shoulder and leans her head against his cheek. "Well . . . We just have to give Maya some time. Believe me, it takes time when you lose your friend for a while. She'll be just fine." Shawn looks at his wife and smiles.
"Did I ever tell you how much -"
"You love me?" Katy grins and Shawn chuckles.
"Yeah, that."
"Only about every day." She places her lips to his lightly. "But it's okay, because I love you too."
"How much?" Shawn teases.
"To Pluto and back." Katy leans her forehead against his and their smiles don't fade for the rest of the night.
