The letters always ended the same. Reassuring as he knew I desired, yet carefully distant. But still they were letters, which was a marked improvement from the weeks of telegrams which repeatedly reported on the weather in the northwest of France.

It did provide some measure of relief that my friend was informing me of his activities. But as I had yet to ask him when he planned to return, his continued insistence that he remain abroad only served to increase my worry.
