Chapter36: Flight from Death Part II
April 1994
Scotland: Hogwarts
Room of Requirement
Peter Pettigrew no longer existed, his soul having been drained from his body and used to revive the monster that was Tom Marvolo Riddle. He was a fragment of the main soul piece that was Lord Voldemort and had been effectively sealed within the lost Diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw. For decades he had been sleeping silently within the Diadem, hidden away from the world so that no one could possibly find him and destroy him.
Tom had awoken along with the other Horcruxes when they felt the pull from the main soul fragment the moment that the original body was destroyed and had anchored it to this world so that Death itself couldn't claim him. Tom had bided his time since then and waited for the opportune moment to be reborn into the world stronger and more powerful than ever. It wasn't long before he felt the presence of another soul fragment nearby and one that was actively trying to claim a physical form only to be destroyed.
He then felt the presence of someone bearing his mark and lured him to the Diadem. Tom had then completely consumed his soul and took over his body, remodelling it in his image. It wasn't possession, this was his body now and he had full access to all of Pettigrew's memories. A lot had happened since he had been fractured off from the main soul and it took him two months to go through it all while living in the Room of Requirement but in the end he now knew what had become of him.
To think that he had been 'killed' by a one year old child…
Tom wouldn't stand for such an insult and fully intended to imprison his main self in the Diadem for losing like that. He would then take the reins in the quest to conquer the Wizarding World and eradicate the muggle infestation once and for all. But first he needed to escape the castle and find a place to lay low for a while until he could fully assess the situation. Riddle Manor perhaps? No, his main self would no doubt be using it as a base of operations if he was still in the country and would be trying to revive himself.
He'd worry about where to go after he got out of here…
Clutching his wand, the Phoenix wand he had originally used and Pettigrew had recovered that Halloween night when his main self was defeated, he left the Room of Requirement and cast a Notice-me-not charm over himself. Pettigrew had known a number of secret paths in and out of the castle, one of which was right below the Whomping Willow. If he could reach it, he'd be able to sneak out of the castle and into Hogsmeade village.
Making his way out of the castle and onto the school grounds while avoiding the numerous portraits that no doubt reported to Dumbledore was rather difficult but not impossible. Thankfully with the Notice-me-not charm in place, the students didn't spot him as he made his way through the school. There was a close call that forced him to hide when one of his main self's traitor of a follower—Severus Snape—passed by but the Potions Professor didn't realise he was there, nor did his Dark Mark burn and alert him to his presence.
He was nearly to the Whomping Willow when he heard voices coming down the corridor on his left…
"Come on Daphne," Astoria pleaded as she and Hari followed after her sister. "It was just a prank."
"You covered the whole of the Slytherin Common Room in custard," Daphne responded sending him a glare over her shoulder. "I had to borrow Hari's Firebolt to get out of the dorms."
"Well…" Astoria trailed off looking sheepish. "I may have went a bit overboard."
"The good news is that Snape thinks it was the Weasley Twins that did it," Hari spoke up obviously amused. "He assigned them detention with him every night for the next month."
"Ouch," Astoria winced at that. "That's harsh."
Detention with Snape wasn't pleasant…
Out of sight, Tom watched them as they passed and narrowed his eyes at the redhead boy among them. It was the Potter brat alright though he certainly didn't look like one with the red hair and all. Clearly he took after his Mudblood mother more than his Blood-Traitor father, something that utterly disgusted the reborn Tom Riddle. This was the perfect opportunity to take out the brat so that he would have to worry about him later and could concentrate on more important things.
All it would take was one spell…
"Avada Kedavra," Tom incanted as he lashed out and fired off a killing curse at the redhead's unprotected back.
Hari heard the words as they were being said and was already moving before the green curse had even left the user's wand. He pushed the girls away and immediately dropped to the floor a split second before the killing curse flew over his head, passing through the space he had occupied a moment before. He rolled to the side and pushed himself back to his feet as Tom cursed under his breath. Before anyone could react Tom had moved to Daphne's side and grabbed her, holding his wand at her throat as he held her up in front of him as a human shield.
"You…" Hari trailed off in surprise as he finally saw their attacker's face.
"Tom Riddle," Astoria whispered suddenly very pale. He looked about a decade older than the last time they had encountered him within the Chamber of Secrets but he was definitely the same man.
"Let her go," Hari said clearly.
"You're not in any position to be making demands," Tom sneered at him. "You, Blond Girl, kill Potter or she dies," he ordered and the three teenagers present all froze at his ruthless ultimatum.
'Damn it,' Hari thought bitterly. 'That bastard.'
What happened just now? One moment he was walking through a corridor with the girls and the next he was dodging a killing curse. Now Daphne was being held hostage by a twenty-something year old Voldemort and telling Astoria to kill him or watch her sister die. He glanced at the younger of the Greengrass sisters and saw that Astoria was shaking her head slightly. She knew Tom better than most having been possessed by him for nearly a year, and she knew that he would likely kill Daphne anyways even if she did follow through with his command.
"Go to hell," Astoria shot back with a glare.
"Expelliarmus!" Hari exclaimed as he brought his wand up and fired off a disarming charm.
"Avada Kedavra!" Tom snarled hastily as he brought his wand away from Daphne's neck and hurling another killing curse at the redhead.
The phoenix feathers in the two wands resonated as the spells struck each other in mid-air and a multi-coloured line formed, connecting the two and locking them in place. Daphne dropped to the side as Tom let go of her and brought his other hand up to clutch his wand while Hari did the same to his own. Sparks of fire burst forth from the connecting light and the floor beneath them cracked under the pressure as the sound of a phoenix's song echoed throughout the castle.
'Come on!' Hari thought as he forced more prana into the connection then it was meant to handle. The light destabilized and abruptly terminated itself, sending out a pulse of magic that cracked the stone walls around them and hurling them away from each other. Hari was knocked to the floor while Tom struck the wall behind him and silence fell a moment later. 'That hurt,' Hari groaned as he struggled to stand back up. 'Not one of my better ideas.'
"You…" Tom gritted out in anger as he staggered slightly and turned his wand on Daphne.
"Daphne!" Hari shouted as he forced himself to his move.
"Avada Kedavra!" Tom snarled as he fired the sickly green curse at her.
Time seemed to slow down for a moment as Daphne's eyes widened at the sight of the oncoming killing curse. There was no time to dodge or even defend herself, she could only wait for the end to come. Then at the last moment Hari stepped in front of her and let the curse hit him in the chest. He was blown back over her and struck the wall behind her with a sickening thud. Daphne looked over and saw him fall to the stone floor.
He did not rise…
"Hari!" Astoria screamed at his motionless form.
"And so ends Harry Potter," Tom declared mockingly. "Falling at the hand of the Dark Lord he so unwisely challenged."
"Crucio!" a new voice called out and Tom barely had time to dodge before the torture curse could hit him.
"What?" Tom blinked in surprise at the dark magic that had been sent at him and turned towards the newcomer who had appeared right beside him.
"Get away from my godson," spoke Sirius Black before he punched Tom square in the jaw and knocked him clean through the doorway out onto the school grounds.
"Sirius Black?!" Astoria shouted in alarm upon seeing the wanted criminal.
"Look after Harry," Sirius told her before pursuing after the now fleeing Tom Riddle. "I'm going after him."
Emiya Hari stood alone in the middle of a frozen wasteland with nothing but snow and ice for as far as the eye could see. The clouds were dark and it was snowing heavily. Despite that, a lone golden sun shown down through the clouds and illuminated the endless winter around him. In front of him a single dome of black ice stood against the pure white snow that made up the rest of the world and it started to slowly crack as the clouds started to darken even more.
My body is made of ice
The black ice-dome shattered a moment later and a large pillar of darkness exploded upwards. A black column of hate and rage, encased in an aura of obsession. Hari could feel the vast amount of emotions it generated, the feeling of disgust, of envy, of utter loathing for a select group of people. The mother that was barely a squib, the father that abandoned him, the children that abused him, the power that made him strong enough to survive.
Cold is my core and ice is my heart
The column of darkness fell away and slowly disappeared to reveal the horror within. It was humanoid in shape and as thin as a corpse, devoid of any meat whatsoever. Red glowing eyes decorated its head and there was no nose to speak of giving it an utterly inhuman appearance. What was this? This feeling that he was getting from the monster before him was hard to place and yet all consuming, like they were the only emotions that it could feel
Oh King of Ice
This creature was filled with hatred, anger and fear…
Shroud this world and start anew
It was afraid to die, afraid of facing those that it had wronged in the next life, afraid of the unknown that awaited all beings in the world. Hari could partially understand that and wondered when exactly that fear had consumed him. This creature—Lord Voldemort—was someone who had been running from death his entire life because to him there was nothing worse than that. He was incapable of feeling any kind of positive emotions and as such was lost in a sea of darkness.
I stand alone on the frozen glacier
Hari simply stared at the sight for a moment before holding out his hand towards it and staring it in the eye. This abomination needed to go, it was evil in the purest of forms, and something that he expected from the likes of Angra Mainyu. He tightened his hand into a fist and white ice shot up the creature's form, encasing it inside and freezing it in an instant. He relaxed his hand and then turned away as the clouds overhead disappeared to reveal a blue sky and bright sun shining down on the frozen wasteland.
At the dawn of the new age I walk towards the future
Hari snapped his fingers and the ice prison shattered like glass, taking the evil monster with it.
My life is Endless Winter
Sirius Black was mad, not insane but absolutely furious at seeing his godson struck down by the rat-bastard currently fleeing the scene. He had once been friends with Peter Pettigrew along with James Potter and Remus Lupin but that all changed when Peter betrayed them. In the end James and his wife Lily were dead while Peter had framed Sirius for the crime. Sirius was then sent to Azkaban without a trial and forced to endure twelve years of constant torment at the hands of the Dementors who deprived him of practically all of his positive emotions. It was only the fact that he knew that he was innocent and that his godson Harry was safe that had kept him sane.
Safe…
Sirius had discovered that Peter—in rat form—was living with the Weasley family and was within striking distance of Harry. Sirius had then escaped from Azkaban using his Animagus form to resist the effects of the Dementors and travelled to Ottery St Catchpole in Devon where the Weasleys lived only to realise that the rat had already gone to Hogwarts with the children. He had then made the journey north into Scotland and tried to sneak into the castle a few times in order to locate Peter. Now Peter had killed Harry and Sirius was going to kill him like he had failed to do thirteen years ago.
"Crucio!" Sirius snarled as he hurled the torture curse at the fleeing Pettigrew.
"Protego!" Tom Riddle hissed out as he raised a shield charm and deflected the curse. "Crucio!"
"Damn you Peter!" Sirius shouted angrily as he threw himself to the side and down the hill evading the curse that was sent back at him. "Harry is dead because of you! Were James and Lily not enough for you?! Did you have to kill Harry too?! I'm going to kill you once and for all!"
"You're a fool, Black," Tom sneered in disgust as he stood with his back to the Whomping Willow. "Dear old Peter is already gone, now there is only Lord Voldemort, the Heir of Salazar Slytherin!"
"Voldemort?!" Sirius yelled in shock. "But you're supposed to be dead!"
"I have conquered death," Tom declared with a dark and twisted smile as he stunned the Whomping Willow. "By all means strike me down if you can, I will simply return again and again."
"Diffindo!" another voice called out as a blue cutting severing charm shot at him from the side.
"Protego!" Tom snarled back as he again raised a shield charm to deflect the spell that was thrown at him.
"Remus?" Sirius blinked in surprise at the newcomer. "Wait—Remus!" he shouted as his old friend turned his wand on him.
"Stupefy," Remus incanted with a glare and stunned the ragged-looking man that he used to know.
"Remus Lupin," Tom said with another sneer etched onto his face. "Werewolf," he then chuckled slightly with his wand held to the side. "You seem to be doing rather well for yourself these days."
"Peter," Remus responded with a glare. "It's hard to believe that you survived all these years."
"If it's any consolation I've already consumed him," Tom shrugged uncaring and then smiled widely. "You can't stop me, Remus."
"Maybe not but I bet that I can slow you down," Remus countered as he settled into a duelling stance. "You and Sirius have caused a lot of commotion and I doubt that I'm the only one who heard it. Dumbledore will be here soon along with the rest of the Professors…"
"By then I will be long gone and you will be dead," Tom bowed mockingly and then snapped off a barrage of silently cast Cruciatus curses.
Remus kicked the stunned Sirius away so he rolled down the hill and into the Forbidden Forest, dodging the volley of curses as he did so. What followed was a fast and furious stream of curses going back and forth between the two. They were silent in their casting and circled each other as they traded blows, each one of them stringing spell after spell at the other. This went on for several minutes and Tom soon realised that the werewolf he was facing really was buying time for reinforcements to arrive.
Tom could probably take on the entire Hogwarts staff in a straight up fight if he had too but he was hesitant to face Dumbledore. The old Headmaster was the only person in the world that he was wary of facing on the battlefield and his main self had seemingly gone out of his way to avoid the man as much possible. Considering his age it wouldn't be long before the old man died anyways so Voldemort needed only to outlast him and then he could move onto to conquering the rest of the world.
Right now he didn't have that option…
'Damn it,' Remus paled as he slipped on the ground a little.
A single misstep…
That was all it took…
"Avada Kedavra!" Tom snarled taking advantage of the momentary lapse in spell-fire and hurled a killing curse at the werewolf.
Remus' eyes widened as the sickly green curse left his opponent's wand and crossed the distance between them. He tried to raise a shield even knowing the futility of it but in the end it proved to be useless as the killing curse struck him dead center in the chest. Remus was thrown back and fell down the hill towards where the stunned Sirius lay. He hit the ground hard and fell still, the life he had snuffed out in an instant leaving nothing behind but a motionless corpse.
Tom smiled before turning away and disappearing down the tunnel beneath the Whomping Willow…
It was time to leave…
