*Ron's POV*
In the following week, since Ron had made his feelings clear about Rose going to Hogwarts on the night of Hugo's birthday, he had begun to panic. He wanted her to be prepared. He knew she wouldn't end up meeting a famous child wizard and end up helping them fight against the dark arts in her time at Hogwarts, and he took comfort in knowing that, but he knew that she would discover so much more about his and Hermione's past. So much more that they hadn't explained to her. She had read about the great battle of Hogwarts and hadn't asked too many questions about it. Ron and Hermione and explained to her what they could manage to without scaring her, or getting upset themselves. Ron couldn't help but think back to the day his, then, eight year old daughter had asked about her Uncle Fred and how he had died.
~Flashback~
It was a warm evening in the middle of June, and Ron was on his way to pick up Rose from her sleepover with her cousins, Fred and Roxanne at George and Angelina's house. Rose was already sat outside of the house waiting for him when he arrived. Angelina stood close by by the front door, making sure she was safe. Rose had a curious look on her face as Ron got out of the car. She got this look whenever she wanted to know something, and she was in no way afraid to be blunt. Ron sighed as he bent down in front of her.
"Hey, princess", he smiled softly at her. Rose only looked up at him for a moment and smiled back at him weakly before staring into space. "Did you have a nice time with Uncle George and Aunt Angelina?", he asked. Rose only nodded before picking up her backpack and swinging it over her shoulder. Ron simply waved at Angelina before he and Rose got into the car and began to drive home. "What's wrong, sweetheart? Did Fred give you a hard time again?", Ron asked, recalling to one time he had had to bring Rose home early from a sleepover with her cousins because Fred had been playing practical jokes on her using his father's merchandise. Rose simply shook her head slowly at her father's query. "Come on, Rosie. Talk to me", he told her. Rose gave a little sigh before looking at her father as he drove.
"Uncle George was telling us stories about Uncle Fred again", she told him.
"I thought you liked hearing stories about Uncle Fred?", Ron asked.
"I do. But- never mind", she sighed as they reached the house. As they got into the house, Rose ran straight upstairs to her bedroom, not even thinking to say hello to her younger brother, or letting her mother know that she had had a nice time. Hermione entered the hallway to greet Ron and Rose but was curious to find that Rose wasn't there. She kissed Ron delicately on the cheek.
"Where's Rose?", she asked.
"In her room. Something's wrong", Ron told her with a worried expression on his face.
"I should go and talk to her", Hermione replied as she started to walk away. Ron grabbed her wrist gently, pulling her back to face him.
"No. I should probably go. She said that George had been talking about Fred", he explained.
"Well, you do what you need to do", Hermione smiled softly at him before giving him another kiss on the cheek and leaving to prepare the family's dinner. Ron made his way slowly up the stairs and stood outside Rose's room for a moment as he took a deep breath. He knocked on the door as lightly as possible.
"Rosie? Can I come in?", he asked.
"Okay", she replied from inside, with a tone of sadness in her voice. Ron entered her room slowly to find her sitting on the edge of her bed, looking at a framed Daily Prophet clipping of Ron and the Weasleys from when they went to Egypt in his third year. Ron sat beside her on the bed as, he too, began to admire the picture.
"Are you going to tell me what happened at Uncle George's?", he asked her. Rose put the picture down on a small table beside her bed as she kept her stare on her knees.
"Nothing happened", she stated.
"Then, what's wrong, princess? I cant help you if you don't talk to me", he told her as he began to play with her hair.
"I don't want to make you sad", she told him quietly. Ron gave a small chuckle.
"Rosie. Nothing that you say could ever make me sad, sweetheart", he told her honestly. Rose gave a small sigh before looking up at her father, her face stained with a few tears.
"Everyone tells me so much about Uncle Fred", she paused before taking a deep breath. "But- but how did he die, daddy? What happened?", she asked. Ron froze for a moment. Ron and Hermione had always made sure from day one that Rose and Hugo knew about their Uncle Fred, but it had never occurred to them that one day they might want to know what happened to him exactly. When Rose first asked about where her Uncle Fred was at the tender age of four, Ron and Hermione had simply told her that he had gone to heaven. Now he was sat with his eight year old daughter who wanted to know the horrible truth of how his brother had died. Ron took a deep breath before deciding to be honest with his little girl. She was extremely intelligent for her age, and sometimes, Ron wished she wasn't.
"Do you remember when your mummy and I told you a little bit about the great battle of Hogwarts?", he asked her. Rose nodded as she listened intently. Ron sighed. "Your Uncle Fred was very brave. He was helping your Uncle Percy protect us all, but- but there was a big explosion and your Uncle Fred was caught in the middle of it", he told her nervously. Rose didn't seem upset by his words. She, in fact, seemed grateful for the information.
"That must have made Uncle George really sad", she said.
"Yes- yes it did. It made us all very sad", Ron told her honestly.
"But, Uncle George says that- that Uncle Fred is a hero and that's how we should always think of him", Rose smiled proudly. Ron couldn't help but smile proudly back at his daughter before pulling her into his side for a cuddle and kissing her on the top of her head.
"I love you so much, sweetheart", he told her, holding back the emotions he was feeling.
"I love you too, daddy", Rose told him happily.
…
He knew she'd be okay. Of course she'd be okay! She had the genes of Hermione Jean Granger for crying out loud! But he just wanted her to be prepared, more for his own sake than for hers. He needed to know that she was prepared for any particularly hard exam, any mean boys or other mean children and prepared for any danger that she may face (but, dear Merlin he hoped she would never have to face!). He had planned for the family to take a trip to Diagon Alley one sunny afternoon so they could buy Rose's school supplies early. Hermione was ecstatic about the idea, any excuse for her to spend as much time as possible in Flourish and Blotts! Which was exactly the first place they visited. As Hermione got lost in books upon books, Ron took Rose and Hugo to get all of the books that Rose would need for her first year at Hogwarts. Luckily, he still had a note with the names of the books they would need that his mother had written when he was preparing for his first year.
"Am I going to need to read all of these, dad?", she asked, her eyes widening at the stack of books Ron had collected.
"Unfortunately, yes", Ron joked.
"I can't wait!", Rose squealed with excitement as she helped her father carry a few books to the counter. Like Hermione, Rose had developed a deep passion for books and reading over the years, something that Ron expected really. Ron purchased the books and the family left the shop, only for Ron to be horrified at who they should run into. Draco and Astoria Malfoy with their son Scorpius were just about to make their way into Flourish and Blotts as the Weasleys were leaving.
"Hello, Hermione", Astoria smiled nervously. This had been the first time the two friends had spoken in eight years, since Hermione had gone into labour early with Hugo and Ron had demanded that they no longer had anything to do with the Malfoy's.
"Hullo", Hermione replied. Rose, Hugo and Scorpius stood awkwardly as their father's stared at each other viciously.
"Are you going to get out of the way, Weasley?", Draco snarled.
"Anything to get away from you", Ron snapped back at him before taking Rose's hand and walking away with Hermione and Hugo following.
"Who was that man, dad?", Hugo asked, letting go of his mother's hand to catch up with Ron.
"That, Hugo, is Draco Malfoy, the amazing bouncing ferret!", Ron declared as he smirked back in Draco's direction. Draco only scowled back at Ron before following his wife and son into Flourish and Blotts.
"I wish you two would behave", Hermione sighed.
"After what happened when Hugo was born? There's no chance I'll behave around that awful git!", Ron told her.
"Language, Ronald!", Hermione snapped at him.
"What happened when I was born, dad?", Hugo butted in.
"That's a story for when you're older, sweetheart", Hermione told him as she raised her eyebrow at Ron. After a busy day of buying school supplies, Ron and Hermione decided to take the children to the Leaky Cauldron for a spot of lunch and to visit Hannah Longbottom and her young daughter, Alice. As they sat around a table, Hannah immediately spotted them and rushed over from behind the bar.
"Hey", she smiled brightly at them.
"Hello, Hannah", Hermione smiled back.
"How are we all?", Hannah asked.
"We've just bought all of my stuff for Hogwarts next year!", Rose grinned excitedly.
"Wow, we are eager, aren't we?", Hannah grinned. "I'll go and let Alice know you're here and maybe you girls can plan for next year together?", she proposed. Rose nodded happily before picking up a menu and scanning it closely. "And how are you, Hugo?", Hannah began to smile at Hugo.
"I'm fine thank you", he smiled softly at her.
"Brilliant. Well, you let me know what you want when you're ready and I'll just go an get Alice", Hannah smiled brightly before leaving.
"It must be awful for her when Neville's at Hogwarts for most of the year", said Hermione as she scanned a menu.
"Will Uncle Neville be teaching me next year, mum?", Rose butted in.
"Yes. He'll be your Herbology professor", Hermione smiled softly at her.
"Hi, Rosie!", a happy Alice Longbottom rushed over to the table. Alice was a very pretty little girl, she had long flowing brown hair that curled slightly in some places. She sported a brightly patterned cardigan, something her father, Neville, would usually wear and her two front teeth were nearly just as big as her father's.
"Hi, Alice", Rose smiled softly at her friend. "Do you want to see my school books?", she asked excitedly. Alice nodded just as enthusiastically as Rose looked to her parents for their approval for her to leave the table.
"Make sure you're back when our food's ready, love", Ron smiled softly at her. Rose grinned before jumping down off of her chair and joining Alice upstairs. As the hours passed by, the family enjoyed their meal together and their time with Hannah and Alice before saying their goodbye's and heading home. Later that night, Ron went into Rose's bedroom to say goodnight to find her sitting up in bed reading her newest copy of Quidditch: Through the Ages that she had asked for earlier that day. "Merlin. How many times have you read that book now?", Ron smirked as he sat on the end of her bed. Rose smiled softly at him before placing the book down on her bedside table and sighing.
"Dad?", she spoke. Ron raised his eyebrows at her, ready for her question. "Do you think I'll be able to make the Quidditch team when I go to Hogwarts? I mean- do you think I'll be good enough?", she asked. Ron couldn't help but smile at her question.
"Do I think you'll be good enough? Sweetheart, I know you'll be good enough! I've watched you play in the Orchard with Albus and Roxanne at the Burrow. Albus always ends up with a crushed ego when you're playing", he grinned.
"Really?", Rose smiled softly.
"Really", Ron smiled back at her.
"Which position should I go for? I mean- I like being a beater, but I think I'd be better as a keeper", she continued to ask.
"I think-", Ron started as he shuffled up the bed so he could sit by her side. "Which ever position you decide to go for, you'll be brilliant", he grinned at her. Rose threw her arms around Ron's neck as she hugged him tight.
"Thanks, dad", she whispered softly.
"Anytime, princess", he smiled before giving her a kiss on the tip of her nose, just as he had always done since the day she was born. "Now, you better be getting some sleep otherwise your mother will hex me for keeping you up talking!", he joked as he winked at her. Rose giggled before kissing her father on the cheek.
"Goodnight, dad. I love you", she said softly as she got herself settled in bed.
"I love you too, princess", Ron smiled at her before using his deluminator to turn off the lights in her room and leaving his daughter to sleep.
