Her eyes opened again when she felt her body being thrown onto cold stone. Her hands and feet were bound and she heard cruel, malice laughter ringing in her ears. Two heavy boots stood in front of her and as Lark lifted her eyes, her heart dropped. There stood Azog the Defiler. He smiled a twisted smile and spoke to her with a darkened tongue.

"Greebas mojogeep!"

Her eyes clouded with tears and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't pull away and he stretched one of his cold hands and ran it down her cheek. His sharp nail dug into her flesh and she felt the trail of blood follow after it. The large swarm of orcs whooped their amusement and she whimpered quietly. Azog glared at her and smacked her cheek hard, sending her body to the ground. Orcs descended upon her and began to tear at her arms, her legs, her clothes...anything they could get a hold of. Lark screamed and tried to curl up away from them. In the distance she could hear shouts...was that her name? Was that Bofur...or Kili...anyone? Azog spun round and hounded on his "men".

"Ru'eeg'a jat!"

A cold darkness fell around them and the orcs sprang away from her and her shoulders shook with sobs. Like a breeze, a voice filled the air about her...it sounded cold and heartless...but also tempting and persuasive.

"It doesn't have to be this way my sweet. I can stop them and make all your pains go away."

She shook her head and curled up. Lark whispered to herself and as she did so the shadow laid about her; hugging her in its dark embrace. The orcs were hid from view.

"No..no please I just want to go...i just want Kili...he will come...they won't leave me alone...they won't leave me..."

The voice hissed at her harshly.

"WELL WHERE ARE THEY THEN?! Where are your preciousssssss friends? I don't see them!"

"No they're coming...leave me alone...JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!"

Her ripped clothes moved as her sobs shook her body and the voice laughed in her ear.

"Well I tried to be nice with you Girl but now I will have to be cruel...bring out the elf!"

Lark's head shot up as the dark mist parted. A body lay around ten feet from her. Dark hair matted against his head, green eyes hidden behind closed eyelids, his chest barely filled with breath. Lark tried to move towards him but the voice held her back, taunting her with its words.

"You know this elf yes?"

"Arandur! Please no!"

The mist went into the elfs body and he begun to writhe and scream in agony. Lark cringed at the sounded and tried to claw her way towards her friends but it was no use. The voice laughed mockingly.

"I'll make you a deal girl. You become a warg and lead my army alongside Azog and I will release your friends...the dwarf, the elf and the wizard..."

Images appeared in the smoke of Gandalf and Bofur trapped within an iron cage. They were dead if she didn't obey his command, but what about Kili? And Thorin? And the Company? She couldn't just do that to them. Tears ran down her cheeks and Arandur began to scream and struggle again..Lark couldn't bear it...the screams, the laughter...the constant whispering in her head...

"ALRIGHT!"

It all stopped.

"Good girl..now...shift!"

'I'm so sorry Kili...I don't know what will happen but I love you and always will!'

Lark stood shakily and felt herself warm. She began to change and the voice began to cackle mercilessly in her ear.

"It's amazing how easy a trick in the light can fool anyone!"

Lark gasped as she completed her warg form and Arandur evaporated into nothing but mist. So too did Bofur and Gandalf and a large dark body swirled about her. She had been tricked, her mind had been played and Lark desperately fought to shift back. The darkness flooded in through her chest and took her from conscious; locking her in the darkest corner of her mind. She looked down, she was human again but she was in the Greenwood, the one from her dreams and she was chained to a tree. Lark pulled at the chain but it would not budge. The voice danced about her brain.

"Thank you for the use of your body!"

Then it was gone.

...

Gandalf watched from his iron cage as Lark's sandy fur turned black and coarse. Her blue eyes faded and were replaced with hideous harsh balls of orange flame that glowed like burning fire. This was no longer Lark, this was pure evil. Azog approached the large snarling warg and stroked its head. The beast allowed him to mount her before walking towards the mountain, walking towards the war to come. Bofur cocked his head from his cage to try and see what was happening. He jumped back in shock when the black warg with burning eyes smacked at his cage and growled lowly before moving onward. He turned to Gandalf.

"What was that thing?!"

"That...my dear Bofur...is all that is left of our beloved Lark."

...

"Uncle I am not leaving without her!"

"Kili we have already wasted a day looking for Lark and Bofur. I will NOT risk my quest for them!"

Kili's face twisted with disgust.

"Your quest?"

Thorin swallowed nervously...hadn't he said their quest? Kili chuckled humourlessly.

"I see...so this is what it has come to...it is no longer a quest to take back our home but for YOU to receive all the treasure that YOU feel your due?! And here I thought you had noble intentions!"

Thorin winced and Fili stepped between them.

"KILI! That's enough!"

The elder brother pulled Thorin aside.

"Go Uncle...Kili and I will stay here with Bifur and continue to search for Lark and Bofur. We will rejoin you at the mountain once we have found them."

"Fili your place is with the company! This is YOUR quest as much as it is mine..."

The blonde prince shook his head and cast a worried glance towards his brother. Kili paced, frustrated and kicked a plant pot; shattering it. Fili turned back to Thorin.

"No Uncle. My place is with my brother...and his One...I will not forsake them for ALL the riches of the world. Not even our homeland."

With that Fili stepped away from his Uncle and joined Kili. Bifur sat next to them and began jabbering in Iglishimek. Thorin bowed his head and turned to the rest of the company.

"We move on. To the mountain."
