"Oh I don't know, Karma's a bitch?" Zoe offered, the trace of a sad laugh to her voice as she took a seat beside Jay. The bench was undoubtably rather uncomfortable but right then Zoe could have easily drifted off. Living with a cancer and a teenage daughter was incredibly exhausting without work added to it.
"Karma?" Jay questioned, raising his eyebrows, abandoning his slouched position. He straightened his back and stretched out his legs.
"Why would karma be a bitch to you, what the hell have you ever done to deserve this?" He asked a confused look taking over his innocent little face. Zoe adored the light hearted nature he had always had but saw no trace of it as they sat there.
"You really need me to answer that one?" Zoe chuckled, a sad chuckle. Even laughing seemed to be a task of the impossible lately.
"The affairs, the flings, the lies, the baby..." She trailed off, the past had always been a very sensitive topic and one that Zoe was often in no rush to elaborate on. Not that that stopped her from dwelling on it then, every man she had slept with, kissed or even just flirted with crossed her mind and as usual none could quite compare to Nick. She couldn't quite put her finger and what exactly was so different about her Mr Jordan but whatever it was had changed her mind on men completely.
"Zoe. Stop it, that was all in the past, you just need to focus on the future now" Jay stated, wrapping one arm around her shoulders, her head willingly rested on his shoulder.
"But that's just it. Everything's coming back to bit me"
"Not if you don't let it. Where's my fighter gone?" Jay smiled, both their eyes studying the steady stream of patients that made their way into the hospital.
"She's gone" Zoe whispered against the lump that grew in her throat. Biting down onto her bottom lip, her eyes fell onto a grieving relative who had just watched their partner pass away in RESUS. She had to drag her eyes away quickly, before the thought of leaving Nick like that flooded her mind.
In perfect unison, Nick himself approached them at the bench.
"Hey" Zoe smiled up at his face streaked with recent tears- he was putting on a brave face but his mask was too transparent.
"Come here" Nick breathed, his voice the perfect mix of love and emotion- a genuine voice.
Zoe needed no further invitation and pushed herself off the bench, falling quite literally into his arms. They formed a protective barrier around her curved frame as she buried herself into Nicks body.
"I'm sorry for pushing you into talking." Nick apologised simply, there was no movement from the couple, they stood joined together inseparably.
Zoe shook her head slightly against Nicks chest, her head in just the right place to hear his heartbeat as it hammered through his chest. He had been stressing himself out again.
"Believe me when I say this Nick, you have nothing to be sorry about. You understand"
"Whatever you say" Nick smiled into her hair, placing a chaste kiss to the silky roots of it and nuzzling his nose over the top of her head.
Zoe pulled away from Nick ever so slightly. Looping her arms around his neck she pulled him closer. Their faces were touching- foreheads rested against the other and noses brushing ever so slightly.
"Good because I need you to just carry on being you. It's the only thing that's getting me through all this."
