Chapter 31: Summer Part 2
~Kayla's PoV~
"What do you want for your birthday?" My mom asks as she munches on a piece of toast. My birthday was this Saturday and I had no idea what I wanted. I didn't really want anything but she'd never take that as an answer. "How about a sleep over or something?" She asks, she has yet to meet my friends. I've never let them come over even though they've asked plenty of times. I know she wants to meet them but I'm not sure about that. "Don't you think putting some tents up in the backyard will be fun?"
It did sound fun but I still wasn't set on the idea. "What about the boys?" I crossed my arms and studied the old cookie jar on the able. The color was coming off and the bear had seen better days. "Do we even have tents?" Please say no, please say no.
"Actually we do. Remember, we used to go camping all the time."
"That was in Utah, I thought you threw those things out." There was no way to get out of this now. I guess this was going to happen whether I liked it or not. "Fine, mom, I'll call them."
"Tell them it's happening tonight, I'll go set up the tents." She's out the door before I can say anything. I sigh and call Phil first. That's knocking three birds out with one stone, the birds being him, Lil, and Amy. "Hey, Phil," I say with a smile. "I wanted to know if you guys wanted to come over for a sleep over. My mom is setting up tents as we speak. Knowing her, girls get one tent and boys get the other." I hoped he'd say no. "She thinks it's a great birthday party idea."
"Sounds like fun, I'll bring over the present I got you then. Urm, what's your address?" Shit. Of course he was going to say yes, I should have known that.
After telling him my address and telling each other good bye, I called everyone else. So, everyone was coming and I was freaking out. I wasn't the richest person ever and that showed, I was always helping out and working for money to help my mom out. Our house was small and cramped, but it was home. I was just nervous about how they were going to react to it all.
"Okay, they're coming," I say to my mom who was setting up a third tent. How many did we have? There was a huge tent and two slightly smaller tents. "You had this all planned out, didn't you? You just needed me to ask my friends." She was always so sneaky like that.
"Who'd you call first?"
"Phil."
She gave me a look, she knew me well. Too well. Though Phil and I were just friends, I couldn't help but like him. He had charm and he was funny, that was enough to sweep me off my feet. He was also so caring and nice, he made me feel like my stomach was going to explode from thousands of tiny butterflies. I was envious of the pretty cheerleaders that always seemed to be around the football star, I was just a friend. "We're friends," I remind her. "That's it." I go back inside to wait for my friends.
I chip at the paint on the bear cookie jar. Its black smile was fading and only had one blue eye now. I couldn't think of getting a new one, we've always had this one. I smiled at the smiling bear, though it didn't carry sweets, it brought a smile to my face anyways.
I doorbell rings and I get pulled out of my trance. I hesitate to open it but I do anyways. "Hey," I say to the first three guests to show up, Phil, Lil, and Amy. "Come in." I open the door wider to let them in. "So, sup guys?" I stuff my hands in my pockets and watch them examine my house.
"I want a house like this when I'm out of school," Amy says. "Not too big, not too small. It's perfect."
"Uh, thanks. Come meet my mom, guys." I take them outside and introduce my mom to them. "This is my mom, you've seen her around at school." My mom worked as a janitor at school and I saw her at lunch a lot.
"How do you deal with such rude people all the time?" Amy blurts out.
Mom grins at her. "I learn to ignore rude remarks."
"I could never do that," Lil says. "People can be so rude."
"Well, I'll be inside. I'll let your other friends know to come out here."
"You mom's cool," Amy grins.
"Thanks."
"How come we're just meeting her and seeing your house?" Phil asks, it's the first time he's said anything.
I just shrug. "I dunno." I turn on the radio that my mom brought out so I don't have to talk anymore. Amy and Lil sit on the grass and begin to talk to one another. "So," I start, I turn towards Phil. "How's summer treating you?"
"Football workouts suck," he replies. "How about you?"
"I've been spending a lot of time at the mall. The sun isn't really my thing."
"I rather be playing video games."
"Me too."
"Wanna open your present?" He hands me a wrapped box before I can say anything. I unwrap the box and open it up. I pull out two tickets to this musical that's in town. "I was hoping we could go together, but you can invite whoever."
"Of course I'll go with you. Thanks." I pull him into a hug and kiss his cheek. "Thanks," I say again with a smile. "This is awesome." I press I kiss to his lips without thinking about it, but he doesn't seem to mind. He kisses me back.
Amy and Lil whistle which causes us to pull away from each other. "Oh shush up." I turn up the radio to drown out their giggle.
"Hey birthday girl!" Kimi pulls me into a hug. Her, Miranda, and Chuckie had just gotten here. "Why are Lil and Amy laughing so much?" I just shrug my shoulders and grin. "Anyways, I got you something." She pushes a bag into my hands and grins. "Well, open it!"
I pull out tons of tissue paper till I get to the present, a new dress. The one I had been eyeing at the mall for the past two weeks. "Thanks Kimi, I love it." I now have a new dress to wear to that musical. I was glad they had come after all.
It was now dark out and it was time for bed. We spilt into tents, the boys took the two smaller tents and us girls took the bigger tent. "Okay," Kimi starts. "Let's play some truth or dare. Nothing too loud since it's like midnight."
"I go first," Amy smirks. A lamp makes her smirk look wicked. She looks around the circle, her eyes land on me. "Kayla, truth or dare?"
"Uh, truth."
"What was that kiss about?"
"What kiss?" asks Kelly.
"Urm-"
"Her and Phil kissed," Lil announced.
"Shh! Do you want the boys to hear you?"
"That's what they're probably talking about," Kimi says.
A/N: This story needed some more Phil and Kayla action. ;3 You're welcome. Okay, question for this chapter: What do you want to happen later in this story?
