Chapter 36: The Curse
Regina walked to the front of her vault where Henry and Emma were waiting; Ally lingered behind. She didn't want to go in there and tell them what Pan was planning. She knew a whole bunch of yelling was going to come from both her mother and Emma, something she was not looking forward too. "Allison, get in here now." Regina commanded. She was not messing around.
Ally walked in with her head hanging low, not making eye contact with anyone. Regina rolled her eyes and grabbed her daughter's arm, pulling her into the room. "Come on, out with it young lady."
Ally looked up at Regina who stood with her hands on her hips waiting for her to start talking. Emma had with her arms crossed and her face stern. Henry looked worried as he remained seated on one of the trunks. "Well…" She started.
"Allison!" Regina and Emma both snapped which earned the blonde a glare from Regina.
"Pan needs Henry because he is one of a kind." She looked over at Henry. "He has The Heart of the Truest Believer." Emma was about to say something. "And no, I have no idea what that means just that he is the key to Neverland."
"Is that it?" Henry asked sounding worried. I wish. She shook her head as she looked at her mother. "He took a slip of paper, the one you used to cast the curse."
"Is he going to enact it again?" Emma asked as she looked over to Regina who had a troubled look on her face. "It would appear that way, yes."
"He wanted me to be the first lost girl…his lost girl" She looked down. "and take both Henry and I back to Neverland."
"The hell he is!" Regina snapped.
"But this goes further than Pan." Ally said looking between the three of them. "When I was back in the Enchanted Forest with Regina, I went to see a mage."
"Yes, I remember." Regina replied wanting her to continue.
"Well he said I would be teaming up with The Heart of the Truest Believer. Never in a million years did I think it would be Henry."
Emma looked confused. "Wait. Henry wasn't even born yet. Hell, I wasn't even born yet! How did he know?"
Ally glared at her as if it were obvious. "He's a mage. Magic."
Emma rolled her eyes. "Okay, so this mage had a vision. So what?"
Regina looked between her son and daughter. "It's a prophecy, isn't it?"
Ally nodded. "I didn't think it was serious…"
Henry stood up and walked between his mothers. "What else did the prophecy say?"
She shrugged her shoulders. "It was very vague. All I know is that you and I are going to be the key to stopping what is to come."
Emma looked over at Regina. "I don't like them involved."
Regina scoffed. "And you think I do?!"
Emma sighed. "Do you know how to get around this?"
Regina shook her head. "Not without knowing exactly what this prophecy said."
Emma threw up her hands. "This is hopeless."
"Where's your Charming optimism?" Regina questioned with a slight smirk on her face.
Emma took a seat on a trunk. "It seems to have skipped a generation."
"We can figure this out!" Henry said confidently. "We always do!"
Regina gave him a sad smile. "It's not that simple Henry."
"Where's Snow and David?" Ally asked wondering how her sister was doing since she was the one that killed Cora.
"To get Gold." Emma replied. "They should be on their way back."
Ally was quick to climb the stairs to exit the vault. "Allison!" Regina yelled but Henry was right behind her. They didn't want to sit and wait underground any longer. Regina joined her kids above ground followed by Emma.
"You two can't just go off like that!" Regina scolded once she caught up her kids.
"We should go meet them." Henry said unfazed from just being yelled at. Emma nodded and they began walking as Regina and Ally trailed behind.
Ally grabbed her mother's hand but remained silent. Regina looked down, remembering the first time Ally did that back in the palace. The sense of warmth and comfort filled her body as she squeezed her little girl's hand, just as it did all those years ago. "Did Pan do anything to you? Hurt you in any way?"
Ally shook her head. "I got out of it the first like two times but Emma saved me for the most recent one."
Regina looked pained to hear such things but she was thankful Emma was there. "I'm okay, Regina. You're here now." She whispered when she saw the worried look on her mother's face. Regina gave her a sad smile as she wrapped her arm around her daughter and kissed the top of her head. "I'll always be here, my little butterfly."
"There they are!" Henry yelled causing Regina and Ally to turn their attention to the three people running towards them.
"What's going on?" Emma asked when they got closer.
"Pan enacted the curse." David said breathlessly.
"What!?" Regina shrieked.
"How do we stop him?" Emma asked.
"We don't." Rumple replied. "I do."
"What are you going to do? Talk to daddy?" Regina asked putting her hands on her hips.
Rumple glared at her and gritted his teeth. "Does it really matter what I do? As long as Pan is destroyed and the curse is stopped, who cares how I got there?!"
"But we don't know how to stop the curse." Snow reminded them all.
Rumple's gaze on the Queen didn't falter. "Regina will take care of that."
They all looked confused, including the Queen. "And how will I do that?"
"You'll need the scroll." Rumple replied. "I'm sure you can handle that much."
As the adults were bickering, the kids took off running towards the town. They knew they were the ones that had to finish off Pan, not Regina or Rumple. They didn't get very far. They soon found themselves frozen in place. "Stop running off!" Regina's voice echoed through the woods as she yelled at them. "You will listen and do what you're told. Is that understood?"
They didn't have to see her face to know how angry and serious she was. They both nodded. Regina unfroze them and grabbed their hands pulling them along with the rest of the group. "You'll be playing right into Pan's hands, is that what you both want?"
"We're sorry." Henry replied.
"I know you two think you're helping but you're just causing more problems for us, not to mention the amount of anxiety I feel when you two are in danger." Regina said as she tried to think of a way to keep her children safe.
The walk back to town went quickly but quietly. Rumple had disappeared somewhere along the way, which surprised everyone except Regina. Belle, Granny, and Hook came running out of the diner when they saw the group approach. "What's happening?" Granny asked.
"Where's Rumple?" Belle asked looking worried.
"I thought I locked you up!" David said to Hook confused.
Hook smirked. "I'm a pirate, mate. What did you expect?"
"Leave him." Regina snapped. "We have bigger issues to deal with."
"Like me?" Everyone turned around to see Pan standing in the middle of the street across from them. Regina and Emma wrapped a protective arm around Henry and Ally but that was as far as they could go. They were all frozen in place.
"Look at you all, a captive audience. I could play with you like a pack of dolls, couldn't I?" He gave them a sly smile as he walked back and forth. "Why don't you hand over the kids and we can avoid this ugly scene."
"You're not getting them so go back to Neverland!" Emma yelled.
Pan looked at the other people frozen in line. "I think I'll start with you then." He said walking over to Belle. "Killing you will be easy."
A hand came down on his shoulder and spun Pan around. It was Rumple who had a very stern look on his face. "Over my dead body!"
"You can go first. I'm flexible."
"You're not going to hurt anyone." Rumple said forcefully.
"Oh I'd like to see that." Pan said walking closer to Rumple.
"You will." He replied not backing down. "because I have a job to finish and I have to do whatever it takes, no loopholes. And what needs to be done has a price that I'm finally willing to pay." He looked over at his girlfriend. "I love you Belle. You made me stronger."
Pan scoffed. "Stronger?"
Rumple pulled out his dagger and stabbed Pan in the back. He returned to his original age; an old man. A few words were exchanged but no one could hear the pair before they vanished into dust. Everyone unfroze. Belle fell to the grown, overwhelmed by losing the love of her life. They all stared at the spot Rumple had just stood; they couldn't believe their eyes. The scroll then rolled towards them.
Regina took a few steps forward to pick it up. When she held it in her hand, she knew exactly what had to be done. She closed her eyes trying to digest this sudden revelation. "Regina? Are you okay?" Snow asked cautiously.
"I'm fine." She responded softly though her eyes remained on the scroll in her hand.
Emma helped Belle up. "I'm so sorry." Belle didn't respond but took her hand. "Regina, don't let him die for nothing." Emma said. Regina just stood there motionless. "Regina!"
"What?" She said slightly irritated but sad at the same time.
"We're here for a reason, love. Pan." Hook said trying to remind her of their situation.
"He's dead." She replied quickly.
"His curse remains." Hook shot back. "Can you stop it or should we all start preparing our souls because mine's going to take some time."
She wiped a stray tear away from her cheek. Leroy came running from a side street screaming, "It's here! The curse is here! It's coming from all sides, there's no escape."
"It's not too late." David said. "You can stop it, right? Regina?"
She quickly glanced over at David. "Yes."
Emma came up behind her. "What's the price? Gold said there was a price. What is our price?"
Regina slowly turned around. "It's not our price. It's mine."
Emma took a step back confused. "What are you talking about?"
Regina put her head down. "It's what I felt when I held the scroll." She took a deep breath and looked back up at Emma, holding her gaze. "I have to say goodbye to the thing I love most."
Emma turned around and Ally and Henry stepped forward. "The kids?"
Regina looked between both of them. "I can never see Henry again." Henry's mouth dropped. Ally felt slightly relieved that she didn't have to leave her mother but slightly jealous Regina loved him more. This wasn't the time to dwell on such things so she shook it from her head. "I have no choice. I have to undo what I started." Regina then looked at everyone.
"The curse that brought us to Storybrooke." Snow said.
"That created Storybrooke." Regina corrected. "It doesn't belong here. And neither do any of us."
David slowly nodded. "Breaking the curse destroys the town."
"It will wean out of existence and everyone will go back to where they're from." She looked at her kids briefly before putting her head down. "Prevented from ever returning."
"You'll go back to the Enchanted Forest?" Emma questioned trying to follow all of this.
Regina looked at everyone. "All of us…" She then looked back to her kids. "Except Henry. He will stay because he was born here."
Emma's eyes grew wide with worry. "Alone?"
"No." She took a few steps towards Emma. "You will take him, because you're the Savior and you were created to break the curse and once again, you can escape it." She said softly.
Emma shook her head. "I don't want to. We'll both go back with everyone."
"That's not an option. I can't be with him. If I don't pay the price, none of this will work." Regina said firmly. A loud thunderous noise rumbled through the town and the wind picked up tremendously. The curse wasn't too far.
"Emma, you have to go." Snow said looking at her daughter.
Emma couldn't believe what she was hearing. "I just found you."
Snow sighed. "And now it's time for you to leave use again. For your best chance, for his."
"No!" She said firmly. "No, I'm not…done. I'm the Savior, I'm supposed to bring back all the happy endings that's what Henry always said."
"Happy endings aren't always what we think they will be. Look around you. You've touched the lives of everyone here." Snow said trying to give her daughter encouragement.
"But we're a family." Emma replied sadly.
Snow nodded. "Yes, and we always will be."
"You and Henry can be a family and you will get your wish. You can be like everyone else, you can be happy." David said with a smile. This is not what Emma wanted at all.
Regina stepped forward. "I've known you for quite some time and all I wanted was for you to get the hell out of my life so I could be with my son." She looked down lovingly at Henry. "But really what I want, is for Henry to be happy." She looked back up at Emma. "We have no choice, you have to go."
Emma looked at her for a moment before she whispered, "Okay."
Everyone was gathered at the town line, saying good bye to Henry and Emma. They could see the curse from a distance but it was approaching fast. Emma was hugging her parents when Henry walked up to Regina to say his goodbye. "This isn't fair. It's all my fault."
Regina looked confused. "What do you mean?" She kept her voice soft.
"If I hadn't gone to get Emma, if I just lived with you under the curse, none of this would've happened. I thought I was alone, that you didn't love me, but I was wrong."
Regina bent down slightly. "Henry…I was wrong too." She tried to hold back her tears. "It wasn't your fault, it's mine. I cast a curse out of vengeance and I'm…I'm the villain. You heard Mr. Gold, villains don't get happy endings."
"You're not a villain, you're my mom!" He wrapped his arms around her waist. She never wanted to let go but she knew she had to. Emma was just finishing saying goodbye to Hook when Henry walked over to Ally.
Regina walked over to Emma to tell her one final thing. "Emma, there's something I haven't told you."
"Emma sighed. "What now?"
"When the curse washes over us, it will send us all back. Nothing will be left behind, including your memories." Emma looked completely defeated. "It's just what the curse does. Storybrooke will never have existed."
"What will happen to us?" Emma questioned looking worried.
Regina slightly shrugged her shoulders and answered truthfully. "I don't know."
"That doesn't sound much like a happy ending." Emma put her head down.
"It's not but I can give you one." Emma looked confused. "I can give you new memories." She grabbed Emma's hand. "My gift to you is good memories, a good life, for you" she looked back to Henry who joined her side. "And for Henry. You'll have never given him up. You'll have always been together." Emma was crying, and Regina was on the verge of tears.
"You would do that?" Emma asked astonished.
Regina looked down at her feet briefly before returning her gaze to Emma. "There's something else…" Emma looked nervous as she waited for Regina to speak. "You have to take Allison with you."
Emma furrowed her eye brows. "What?" Ally heard her name and went to Regina's other side.
"I love her too, Emma. Please take care of her as well." Regina begged. "I know she's not your child but-"
"I'll take her." Emma said already making up her mind before Regina could finish.
"But I was born in the Enchanted Forest." Ally said as she looked up at her mother. "I have to go back with you."
Regina shook her head. "No sweetie. I love you and Henry the same, you have to go with Emma too."
Ally was not prepared at all for this. She wanted to stay with Regina, no matter what world she was in. "No, I'm not leaving." She looked back at Snow. "I'm staying with you and my sister."
Regina turned her face back to her to get her attention. "Allison, I know this is hard but you have to be the strong girl I know you can be."
Ally just shook her head trying to form words but none came out; instead, tears slid down her cheeks. Regina pulled her close for one final hug goodbye. "I love you, my little butterfly." She gave her a soft kiss on her head.
Ally buried her face into her mother's jacket, taking in her scent. She never wanted to forget her smell but knew she would as soon as she crossed that line. "I love you too, mom."
That was it. Regina's heart couldn't take it anymore. It was the first time Ally called her 'mom' and it would be the last. She gave her one more kiss. "Go with Emma." She said as she lightly pushed her towards the blonde.
Henry grabbed Ally's hand knowing just how hard it was to say goodbye to everyone, especially their mother.
Snow walked up to her daughter and cupped her face. She gave her a warm smile before kissing her forehead. This was the moment Emma lost all control of her emotions. She just found her parents and now she had to leave them once again.
Snow wrapped Ally into a tight hug. "Take care of my mom." Ally whispered into her sister's ear.
"I will." She promised before giving her sister a soft kiss on her cheek. She stepped back to join the others and watched as the three got into Emma's yellow bug. Ally looked out the back window and saw the impending curse growing closer. Emma began to drive away. The last thing she saw was her mother's purple cloud of magic engulfing everyone, then there's was nothing but a clear road.
She wiped her tears away and turned around. "You okay, kid?" Emma asked when she saw her tears in the rear view mirror.
"Yea, I don't know why that just happened." She laughed it off.
"Happens to the best of us." Emma said with a smile.
Ally smirked. "Not you, mom."
I meant to post last night but Game of Thrones and Reign had me occupied. Hope you enjoyed the chapter, please let me know what you think.
