Chapter 35: Pain, pain go away
I don't know how long we have been in here, in this room that Andrew has held us captive in. My mum is awake now and her wound has stopped bleeding. We are all hungry and starting to get dehydrated. We have no food or drink and haven't been given any since we arrived.
The door opens and in walks a guard with a tray of food and some water, he puts it on the floor and leaves. Tobias walks over to it and brings it to each of us. We have a bowl of soup and some bread each. I take a cup of water, a bowl of soup and a slice of bread and he sits next to me, eating his meal.
It tastes horrible but I need it, the baby needs it. Tobias gives me his slice of bread as well. I try to argue with him, saying he needs food as well, but he didn't give in, so I took it and ate it.
This is the second time this man has held me captive since I became pregnant and I can't handle it. If he did what he did last time then my son is in danger, and so is everyone else in this room.
We are sat there, in silence, for god knows how long. At some point a piece of paper slides under the door. Hana picks it up and reads it out loud to us:
"Hello, wife, daughter, unborn grandchild, Tobias, Johanna and friend, as you know you are being held captive by me, Andrew Prior and some of my colleagues. Marcus is currently in the city with the rest of the factionless, fighting your friends and the Abnegation. I have to say, you have some pretty good fighters on your side. It's a shame that Erudite and Candor aren't helping you out, because, well, you're outnumbered. Anyway, in two hours I am going to come back here, and actually enter the room, I am going to have a gun in my hand, and I am going to kill one of you. You have two hours to decide who is going to die, or I will kill whoever I want to kill. The person who you have decided to have die has to be standing with their back against the wall opposite the door by the time I get their or I will shoot someone at random. Thanks for your cooperation. Andrew Prior."
No. No. No. No. No. He can't do that.
"It has to be me." Johanna says.
"No, you can't just die. People need you." I tell her.
"It has to be me, Tris. You're pregnant, you need Tobias and your mum, and so does the baby. Hana is a trained midwife so you need her too. I know I am too, but it needs to be me. You trust Hana more than me because you know her more. Hana actually worked as a midwife for quite a few years, I haven't been a midwife for ten years because I have been leader. She has more experience than I do, so you're better off with her. So, the person who has to die is me." She explains. "Don't worry, I don't have anyone that needs me."
"Yeah, you do. You have like everyone in Amity. They need you." I say.
"They're fine without me. Also, I was going to resign next year and pass on my leadership to someone else. It's fine, they don't need me. I have to be the person to die." She says.
"Johanna, you can't do this." I say.
"I have to, it's the right thing to do." She says as she stands and walks to the wall opposite the door, she stands there with her back against the wall, waiting.
We all wait, talking about things, anything.
Then the door opens and in walks Andrew, holding a gun and aiming it at Johanna. He shoots and it hits her, right in the chest. It isn't long before she collapses to the floor, unconscious.
"No!" I yell as I try to go over to her collapsed form.
I hear another gun shot and feel pain tearing through my chest.
I hear someone call my name as I fall to the floor.
I see Tobias stand and start to beat Andrew to a pulp.
I see my mum and Hana rush towards me in a panic.
Everything is in slow motion.
Everything is becoming blurry.
Everything is hurting.
I hear another gun shot and see Andrew fall to the floor, unconscious.
Tobias rushes over to me with tears in his eyes.
I can see them all calling my name but I can't hear it.
Tobias picks me up, bridal style and I rest my head against his chest. He takes me out of the room.
When will this pain ever go away?
That is the last thing I think about before I black out.
Pain, pain go away.
