"Did you hear that? She laughed!" Kili called enthusiastically and let his gaze drifte along the others.
"Aye, she seems to like you a lot," Dís said and Fili immediately asked,
"May I hold her as well?" Mona gave her permission. He took Kalea on his arms and said,
"You're such a beautiful little thing. I suppose we will have much work to do by keeping the lads away from you as soon as you're old enough."
He grinned at his uncle who scowled a little but Mona finally said,
"I suppose it would be the best if she gets some rest now," and Fili handed the baby to her again.
"We'll be outside for a while. Will you join us for dinner later?" Kili asked.
"Maybe," Thorin replied when suddenly he remembered something. "Dís, would you please write a little message to Bilbo? He has to be informed that his goddaughter is born."
His sister nodded and she left the room with her sons.
Dís entered her room and took a sheet of parchment and lowered down at the small desk. She began to write,
"Dear Bilbo,
I hope you arrived safely in Bag End and that you have a good time with your nephew. I'm writing you to inform you that Kalea is born. She is a beautiful girl with dark hair and green eyes. Can you imagine that my son, Kili, was the first who made her laugh?
I will ask Ori if he would draw a picture of her so I can send it together with this letter.
I hope you feel well and that we'll see you soon again.
Take care,
Dís"
She put the letter in an envelope and left it on the desk. She headed outside and found Nori, Ori and Bofur together on the big balcony.
"Ori, would you like to draw a picture of Kalea later? I wanted to send a letter to inform Bilbo about her birth."
"Certainly. Will they join us for dinner?" he asked curiously.
"I think so, yes,"
"I can't wait to see the little princess," Bofur said with a smile and added, "I will sing and dance for her. I'm certain she'll like it."
Later in the evening, the whole Company was gathered around the massive dining table. Kili told them about Kalea and that he had been the first to make her laugh.
"I'm certain you will be a good father one day as well," Bofur called cheekily and they all broke out in laughter as they saw Kili's quite shocked face.
"Well, I suppose it's a bit too early to think about own children," his mother said and ruffled his hair. Though she liked Eolyn and could really imagine Kili to be a father but he was still too young for things like that. Even Fili would be too young but he wasn't thinking about having children so soon.
"Barbas, have you seen Kalea, yet?" Fili asked.
"No, but I'm sure we'll get to know her within the next couple of moments."
"How do you know that?" Oin asked curiously.
"Intuition," the dog replied and it was clearly to make out that he would grin if he could.
A couple of moments later, the door opened and Thorin entered together with Mona and Kalea who lay on her mother's arm. The Company got up and surrounded them. They congratulated them and Dwalin patted Thorin's shoulder as he said,
"Good work, my friend."
Thorin smiled thankfully and Kili called once again, "May I hold her again? Please?"
"But be careful," Thorin insisted and Mona handed the baby to Kili. She was awake and looked up at all those strangers surrounding her.
The Company sat down at the table again and the royal couple began to eat for they hadn't eaten the whole day since Kalea was born. Mona watched while Kili was holding the baby on his arms like if he was a proud older brother instead of her cousin. She smiled warmly.
"She's wonderful," Barbas said and her gaze drifted to him. He trotted to Kili and looked at Kalea. She made a squealing sound of glee as she saw the dog and grabbed his fur.
"I think she's obsessed with hair," Kili chuckled.
He handed her to Thorin who took his daughter and cradled her in his arms. He smiled down at her. Mona smiled at him while she watched him interacting with his daughter. She was still too perplex that Thorin and she had created a new life together.
"You know what I was wondering about lately?" Gloin suddenly spoke up.
"No, what?" Bofur replied.
"Is she like her mother? I mean—will she have the same power someday?"
That was something Mona never thought about and her gaze drifted to Barbas.
"It would make sense," he said and added, "But I guess we have to wait until she's old enough."
"She won't need these powers anyway. There's no dragon around anymore," Kili said.
"And how tall will she be?" Fili asked.
"She's just a couple of hours old. We have enough time to find these things out," Mona chuckled.
"I've never imagined that a baby would fit you so much," Oin said to Thorin and the King replied with a 'thanks' and kissed his daughter's forehead.
