Chapter 34
Brenna glanced up from where she knelt on the edges of Fanghorn Forest. She and her Guard made their way from Rivendell nearly three months ago. The nearly six months that she spent at her beloved's home soothed her soul and washed away the lingering pain and anguish that she felt from Isengard. They had taken a route around where they had been ambushed the previous year. Brenna was startled to find that all of the cavernous holes in the ground had been filled.
Treebeard had come forth and explained that the Ents along with the Dunlendings and Rohirrim had come to this place to fill all of the holes. The Ents had moved large stones and rubble into the caverns that were forged in deceit and evil intent. There were no signs of the battle that had taken place there the year before, much to Brenna's relief.
Despite the protests of her Guard, she insisted that she Heal what she could of Fanghorn Forest. It had been three weeks since she and her party had arrived. In that time some of the Dunlendings kept a respectful distance giving additional protection. A party of Riders had arrived as well when they had seen her group near the border.
Long, exhausting hours were spent Healing the lands. Brenna at first recoiled, feeling the taint of evil and darkness, but pushed out far and wide washing away the inky black smudge on the lands. Slowly but surely, she felt the land returning to what it once was. Fanghorn Forest responded, stretching and groaning quietly. The ancient magic there thrummed and revived. The elves in her party watched and listened in awe. All of them could feel echoes of the First Elves that had walked these lands and awoken the trees with their magic.
Brenna sang softly the songs of Yavanna and Este. She murmured the songs of Elbereth as the purged the evil from the land, fighting to restore the land to what it should have been. Countless hours were spent washing away the darkness that had plagued these lands. Brenna often had to be carried to her bedroll and tucked away to sleep for hours at a time.
When Brenna was finally certain that she had purged every last inch of the lands of Isengard and Fanghorn, she called forth the clean waters deep below the ground. Her hands and brow flared with blinding light as her powers pulsed and flashed far and wide. Green sprouts and shoots of vegetation crept slowly upward from the ground.
Deep within the forest dormant and long slumbering Ents awoke and were strong once more. Treebeard stood taller and stronger than he had been in an Age. It was as if a veil had been lifted from the eyes of the Ents and they knew where to look for the Entwives. Brenna nodded to him and the others that had come forward. They bowed to her and let her know that they would be searching the forest near Buckland for the Entwives.
Brenna grinned and told them that should they have need of her, they only need ask and she would travel there. Sitting back on her haunches she looked around her and felt the forest and land around her come to life and thrive. She felt Elladan kneel at one side while Lord Glorfindel knelt reverently on her other side. The ancient elf gently reached out and touched the tender sapling that was coming to life before his very eyes. He felt the Song of the Trees pulse in it and felt the ancient magics at work.
Brenna met his gaze with a soft smile and nodded. "It is but a small taste of what it feels like to walk under the Two Trees," she whispered. "Yavanna has been tutoring me in her songs to Heal the lands along with Este."
"Little one," Glorfindel said thickly, "you truly are a treasure. Our little Valar blessed child to Guard and Guide."
Brenna blushed and laughed softly. "We are all blessed children of the Valar milord," she said with sparkling green eyes. "Just a little over a century and we will all return home my friend."
Elladan gently cleaned her hands of the deep rich soil. He twirled the betrothal ring that he had placed on her hand and then her ancestral ring. He felt the power of her ring pulse under his touch and it seemed to thrum up his arm.
"Come, Lady Brenna," Haldir said stepped forward. "We've lit the camp fire and there is stew ready. Come rest, you've done enough for the day."
Brenna laughed softly and nodded. "Yes, I'm a bit tired," she admitted. "I do however feel exhilarated from it. I can feel the difference in my powers and recognize how I've grown stronger."
Elladan held his hand out to her and escorted her towards the fire. He sat her on one of the logs brought forward and bundled her in a cloak. Elrohir brought her a bowl of the hot stew that had been simmering over the fire as she worked to Heal the lands.
Folcwine sat near the fire and regarded his lady. When Eomer King asked him to become party of this lady's Guard he immediately accepted and swore to protect her with his life if needed. That day last year when his lady sent him to get help from his kinsmen, he had never felt such fear. He fought his own instincts to stay and protect her, but did as she had instructed. He had returned with the second wave of Riders and fought viciously to make his way to her side. In the early morning hours when he watched her crumble and weep, he felt his own tears sting his eyes. Many of the men and ellyn had felt their eyes water seeing her so distraught.
He had been one of the fortunate few from his eored that had survived the War of the Ring. He was much younger than his peers who had ridden to war. Only now was he reaching the age of twenty-six. It was by the Grace of the Valar that he had survived when so many had perished.
Folcwine watched from the other side of camp as Lady Brenna sat near the fire with her betrothed. Glancing around the encampment he saw that the watch was changing over and the next group were setting out to patrol and guard their camp. They were taking no chances after last time.
Brenna ate the hearty stew that her future brother in-law brought her. She was tired, but she could feel the pulse of her magic and the answering thrum from the land and forest nearby. Her work here was complete and she had done as much as she could. Now the rest was up to the Valar and the passage of time.
Her thoughts strayed to Moria, but there was a warning flash in her mind. The Valar cautioned her from ever returning there. After her last confrontation with darkness and evil they feared for her. They visited her in her dreams and visions often over the past half year. Mentoring her and Healing her. They gave her further instruction on what her tasks would be.
Elladan drew her from her thoughts and asked her what was on her mind. Brenna smiled and told him that she would slowly make her way first to Edoras, then Minas Tirith. From Minas Tirith she would travel to Ithilien where she would spend a few months with their kinsmen.
Her Guard listened carefully and nodded. Their charge had much to do and just a short century to do it all in. There were still places throughout Arda that keenly felt the lingering effects of the war. Many places still needed to be healed and cleansed of the evil that had tainted and lurked in their lands for so long.
Brenna hummed softly to herself as she ate. Elladan slid next to her and pulled her against his side. Brenna relaxed against him and sighed in content. Their bond grew stronger still with each passing day. Their parting would be difficult, but Elladan and Brenna knew that it was temporary. She insisted that he needed to spend time in Minas Tirith with Aragorn and his family. When he and his brother tried to protest she gently reminded them that they only had a century left with their beloved sister and that they should make the most of the time that they had.
They somberly conceded and agreed with her. Elladan thanked her for reminding them and helping them to understand how precious their time was. For all of the elves she had opened their eyes to many things that they had taken for granted over the millennia. They began to really pay attention to the world around them and what was happening in Arda far beyond the reaches of their own borders.
Brenna looked towards the East and stood slowly. Only the horizon there was a cloud of dust fast approaching. She wrapped her cloak tighter around herself before smiling slowly. Her Guard and the entire encampment came to attention at her movement. The group turned as one and readied themselves for the approaching company.
"Lady Brenna?" Folcwine asked cautiously. "Is it friend or foe that approaches?"
"Friend," she replied with a grin. "A kingly friend now makes his way here. Rohirrim!" she called out. "Make ready for your King and kin fast approach."
There was a rallying cheer in the group as they stood to welcome and salute their King and kin. Brenna stood and walked towards where the group was heading. She grinned and waved as Eomer and his party approached. They crossed the plains of Westment and pulled up stopping just beyond the perimeter of their encampment.
"Hail, Eomer King!" the cry rang out among the Rohirrim.
Eomer dismounted and took of his helm with a smirking grin tugging at his mouth. He walked towards Brenna, holding a hand to his breastplate and bowed to her. Brenna placed and hand over her heart and bowed in return to her dear friend and brother.
"Littler sister," he greeted her, "you are looking much better since we last saw each other. Rest has been good for you little one."
Brenna smiled. "Yes I am much better than we last saw each other big brother," she replied with dancing green eyes. "My spirit is recovered and I am well once more."
She gestured for him to sit by the fire and share their meal. He and his men took care of their horses and gear before sitting with Brenna and her travel companions. They supped and laughed exchanging news and pleasantries. Eomer and his men listened to and watch Lady Brenna carefully. She did indeed look much better than the last time that they had seen her. Her spirit seemed renewed and restored.
Brenna sat talking quietly with Eomer and her friends. There was a cool breeze in the air swirling across the plains of Rohan and down from the mountain side. Brenna pulled her cloak tighter around her shoulders as did most of the company. Though it was now spring, here further in the North the weather wouldn't warm until late spring.
The group decided to spend the night in their current location before they would be heading towards Edoras the following day. Brenna and her friends sat around the fire talking and laughing throughout the rest of the evening. As the sun dipped in the sky, Brenna rolled out her bedding and sat on it quietly. The fires were stoked and kept burning bright and warm through the night.
Brenna burrowed under the thick blankets and her cloak. The elves in her party did not feel the cold as much as she did. Even after being in Arda after all this time, her body was still adjusting to her new home and life. The men in their party felt the cold in the night. They too bundled in blankets and stayed near the fires to stave off the cold.
In the early hours of the morning Brenna awoke to the sun coming up over the horizon. The faint orange and pink light silhouetted the outcropping of rocks and villages in the distance on the plains of Rohan. She smiled watching the world around her come to life.
Brenna sat on her bedroll and quietly brushed her hair out before braiding it back. Scooping up her blankets and folding them, she started to gather her bedroll and belongings. Clothing was neatly and tightly stored in her packs. She went to the fires and stoked the coals and took out the supplies to make a batch of hot cakes. She mixed the flour and water in a bowl and started frying it in a large cast iron skillet. Soon a large platter of cakes was piling up on a plate as she made batch after batch of batter.
Meanwhile she was heating up the large pot that held the stew. It would be a hearty hot meal of left over stew and hot cakes for breakfast. Brenna grabbed a small plate, eating quickly before going to get Hiril and Ash ready for their departure. Eomer met her on her walk and hefted the saddles for Brenna. His squire squawked indignantly over his sire doing the manual labor. The young boy scowled and hurried over to saddle the King's horse.
Brenna shared a grin with Eomer as they finished with getting her two horses ready for departure. Eomer went to gather his things, dodging his young squire. Brenna laughed watching the pair interact. Eomer flashed a grin and a wink over his shoulder at her. He had whispered that it was a bit of a game he played with the young boy. It greatly amused him to see the youth get so flustered when Eomer King did something that he perceived was supposed to be his responsibility.
Brenna laughed as she strapped on her weapons. She grabbed her packs and walked towards where her horses were waiting. Elladan walked up beside her and helped her store her things in her saddle bags. She held his while he saddled his own horse with an ease and efficiency that spoke of his many years of riding. When he was finished she passed him his belongings.
Elladan took his bags, kissing the back of her knuckles and winking playfully. Brenna blushed brightly, but laughed merrily. She stepped back and turned towards Hiril. Lord Glorfindel held his hand out to her and offered to give her a boost up into the saddle. Lord Glorfindel smiled at his young charge warmly and gave her a leg up. Once he was sure that she was securely seated, he untethered the reins and handed them to her.
Brenna waited patiently was the rest of their rather large company was mounted up and ready to leave. They rode at a relatively quick pace even though there was no real urgency in reaching their destination. Eomer stopped in the villages along the way to check in with his people. Brenna would talk to and Heal some of the most injured and those in need.
She stood or sat talking quietly with each and every person, be it man, woman, or child. To her there was a need to help everyone regardless of age, race, or gender. Brenna sat with one particularly elderly woman and talked with her quietly as she held her gnarled and arthritic hands. A faint blue light glowed as she spoke, keeping the woman's attention looking up at her rather than down at her hands.
Eomer watched with a lump in his throat as Brenna healed Hild. Hild was a craggy elderly woman who helped to raise him and his sister when his parents had passed away. She had helped to raise his father before him and had been a help to his father's family's holdings for many years. Seeing Brenna take the time to not only heal her, but to talk with her was moving.
Brenna listened attentively as Hild chattered about Eomer and Eowyn and their parents. She laughed at the stories of her friends as children. Brenna gently grasped Hild's hands and lifted them up for the woman to see. Though she had healed what she could the woman was well into her eighties and had lived a hard and difficult life. Hild was fairly healthy considering it all, but would not live for many more years. It was the reality of mortality that Brenna knew all too well.
Hild kissed both of her cheeks and touched her brow. She garbled something that Brenna didn't quite catch as she shuffled over to Eomer and pinched his cheek. Brenna laughed as she watched the battle hardened king flush in embarrassment.
She turned to the next person that Eomer had asked for her to look at. A relatively young couple stepped forward. Brenna turned to Eomer in confusion, but he just nodded to her. She ushered the pair to sit with her discretely and quietly as she talked to them. She found that the couple were facing the same concerns that Herumer and Dernhild many years ago. Brenna asked the couple if they could perhaps retire to the privacy of their home.
Eomer nodded to the Rider and Brenna was led to their home nearby. She sat talking with the couple and though she knew Rohirric, she still wasn't fluent enough to convey some of what she needed to. Eomer himself acted as translator as Brenna explained what she felt and found. He conveyed her reassurance that she would do what she could to help.
Brenna found that both partners had some difficulties that they had to heal and overcome. Her hands began to flare a hazy blue light and she held one of each of their hands. Her brow furrowed and a sheen of sweat began to form as the blue haze seemed to engulf the couple.
Pulling back, she released their hands as her body trembled. She felt the visions coming and forced them to slow before letting them come to her. Flash! Twins raced across the room giggling and shrieking as their older brother gave chase. Flash! Lothíriel was struggling to bring Elfwine into the world. Flash! Adnan bowed to her with pleading eyes in a dusty barren city. Flash! Flash! Flash!
Brenna sat heavily on the floor. Her head ached with a dull throb. Eomer crouched beside her, apologizing which Brenna waved off. Elladan gave the man a stern look, letting him know that there would be no more healing for a time. Eomer nodded guiltily.
Brenna turned to the couple who looked at her in question. She grinned and told them that they were healed and would have three children. The woman burst into tears and the man clutched her to his side. Theirs was a fairly uncommon story as they were so young and healthy.
Brenna shook her head knowing that the stigma of infertility was worse here in Arda than it had ever been back home. At least at home there was a means to treat it somewhat. Here in Arda unless Brenna or the Valar Healed them, there was no hope of it happening.
Standing shakily with the aid of Elladan and Eomer, Brenna nodded to the couple and took her leave. Elladan wrapped a protective arm around her and led her to where her Guard was waiting nearby. Many stood in concern seeing her so drawn and tired looking.
"Is everything alright?" Lord Glorfindel asked. "Are you well Lady Brenna?"
"I am fine my friends," she said. "Just a bit tired, but I will be well. We should leave soon if we are to reach Edoras by nightfall."
"Brenna," Eomer said in a guilt laden voice, "I did not mean for you to tire or to cause you harm in asking you to look over a few of my people."
"If it had only been a few people Eomer King it would not be a problem," Elladan turned to face the mean sternly. "Brenna has been healing a half dozen people at each village we pass at your request. She is only now recovered from her last ordeal. Do not think to burden her over much my friend."
"Peace!" Brenna said as she felt the tension grow. "I am well Elladan. I'm slightly tired, but I'm well. Elladan, look at me. I'm fine, melamin. We'll go to Edoras and I will rest there for a time. I've very much like to visit with Lothíriel and Déorwyn."
Elladan looked down at his fëa mate and regarded her carefully before nodding. Brenna smiled up at him and squeezed his hand in response. She knew that he was very protective of her after last year, they all were. That however did not change her duty or responsibility that she had from the Valar.
"Brenna," Eomer said sincerely, "you're always welcome in my lands and in my home. As my uncle before me, I say that you will always have a home in Rohan."
Brenna grinned up at the king and nodded her head respectfully. "Come, milord king," she said in a teasing voice. "Your lady awaits your return."
The group mounted their horses and set off towards Edoras. If they were lucky they would reach the Golden Hall by nightfall. Brenna leant forward in her saddle and whispered to Hiril who tossed her head back and snorted. As Eomer gave the order to ride out Brenna began to sing softly on the breeze spurning them on. Her voice swirled around them as they felt their horses surge forward, flying across the plains.
Those that had ridden with her to war were eerily reminded of darker times and looked to her in concern. Her brow flared as they tore across the plains heading for Meduseld. Eomer pulled up beside her but kept silent watching her eyes go unfocused briefly. His concern grew as her mouth flattened in firm line.
"Is all well in my Halls?" Eomer asked her cautiously.
Brenna turned to him with unseeing eyes. Blinking she realized that he had asked her something. She shook herself and regarded her friend carefully. She thought about what to say to him.
"Your Halls are fine milord," Brenna said softly.
"Then what has caused you to set such a grueling pace, Brenna?" he asked in surprise.
"It's hard to explain Eomer," she replied. "Something is compelling me to reach there as fast as we can. I have not seen anything sinister or wrong so please don't worry."
The group rode through the day and just as the sun was setting in the sky they could see Edoras in the distance. Clarions rang out and sounded the return of the king. Upon the steps of the Hall Brenna saw Lothíriel waiting for them.
Brenna rode up the streets of Edoras and stopped in the main courtyard in front of the Royal stables. Her belongings were taken, but she paused looking at Hiril. Her gentle mare butted her shoulder and snorted. Brenna caught a flash of a filly and smiled brightly.
"Well that's a surprise, my friend," she murmured rubbing the soft nose of her companion.
"Is everything alright, milady?" the stable master asked.
"It would seem that Hiril is or soon will be with foal," she said causing silence to ring out around her. "I fear that I will have to ask that she stay in your capable hands once more sir."
"Aye, milady," the stable master breathed. "We'll care for her and the little one."
Eomer grinned down at her and nodded. "It would seem that you will once more need to have a horse from us Brenna," he said.
Brenna nodded looking where Ash was being led away. He had kept up with them, but his age concerned her. Though in his teens, he had seen and done things that had aged him. Tears sprang into her eyes thinking of losing her loyal friend. It would be years yet, but she could not ride him or travel with him as she once had.
"What is it Brenna?" Eomer asked gently.
"Though I will have years yet with Hiril, Ash," her voice broke. "Ash will not be able to continue the life that I've lived. I fear that he will have to stay here and spend the rest of his days with his kin and forbearers."
Eomer nodded to her. The rest of the Rohirrim that had heard her concern knew that she was right. Ash the loyal and mighty friend had earned his retirement. It was time to find and select a new steed for Lady Brenna.
"Come sister," Eomer said. "We will find a temporary steed until Hiril is ready to ride once more."
Brenna was gently led up the steps by Elladan. He could feel her sadness as did the other elves. Brenna fought for a smile to greet Lothíriel. Her friend embraced her and Brenna sucked in her breath. Easing back Brenna looked at her friend in concern.
Lothíriel had a strained smile on her face. "Welcome my friend," she said softly.
"Lothíriel," Brenna whispered. "Are you well my friend?"
"Please not here," Lothíriel said with tears in her eyes.
Brenna nodded and let Lothíriel lead her away from the group towards the rooms that were set aside for her. Once in the rooms Lothíriel burst into tears and sat heavily on the bed. Brenna held her friend as she cried out all of the pain and grief that she had felt. Lothíriel explained that she and Eomer had been trying for a child. Lothíriel struggled with it and did not seem to be able to get pregnant until recently. She had such joy and elation, only she recently miscarried. Bitter tears poured down her face as she explained to Brenna that she felt like a failure and that she overheard one of the servants talking about the king not having an heir.
Brenna eased her friend back into the bed. Sitting on the edge of the bed she closed her eyes. There she found the problem with her friend's womb. The birth of Léofwyn had left tears and scar tissue. Her latest tragedy, the miscarriage was still new and painful. Brenna held her hands over her friend's abdomen and felt out with her magic. She willed the tissue to heal and renew.
Lothíriel felt the warmth and slight discomfort, but lay back trusting her friend. She watched as the blue haze flared and engulfed her abdomen. Tears poured down her face as she felt the feather-light touch of the magic soothing.
Brenna pulled back trembling in fatigue. Her eyes closed and she slumped forward on the bed. Lothíriel called out in alarm and the door opened to reveal a concerned Eomer and the Sons of Elrond. Oriel stood back in the hallway unsure of what had happened. She had traveled with Brenna, not often straying from her side, but thought that she would want time with her friends.
"What happened?" Eomer said stepping into the room seeing his wife's tears. "What's wrong my love?"
Lothíriel threw herself into her husband's arms and told him what had happened through her tears. He held her and fought his own thinking of the child that they had lost in his absence. To know that his love had needed him and he wasn't there hurt him. When she told him that Brenna had healed her before slumping over, he glanced over to find Brenna being carefully arranged in the bed.
The Sons of Elrond took off her travel boots before stepping back and allowing Oriel and a handmaiden to step forward to change her from her travel clothes. The pair stood and glanced at Lothíriel asking her if she was well. The Queen nodded sadly and told them that she would be well.
Brenna slept deeply through the night and late into the next day. Her journey to Edoras and the healing that she had done on her way there before she had healed Lothíriel had taken its toll on her.
Stretching languidly, Brenna sat up in her bed. She looked down and realized that someone had changed her and put her to bed the night before. Her stomach interrupted her thoughts with a grumble. Sighing, Brenna got up out of bed and walked behind the privacy screen. She tugged off her nightshirt and quickly washed with the bowl of water that had been left in the room. She pulled on a fresh chemise and stepped from behind the screen to select a dress.
She had just pulled on the light green under layers of her dress when a knock sounded on the door. Oriel stepped in and smiled at her young friend. She urged Brenna to sit at the vanity while she helped to brush out and braid her hair. When her hair had been taken care of they pulled the rich green outer dress on. Oriel laced the back of the gown up and stepped back. A golden belt was wrapped around Brenna's waist and draped down the front of the gown. It was a very Rohirric dress that she had chosen to wear.
The two ellith made their way towards the King's Hall where the others were taking their midday meals. Brenna was hailed and welcomed as she entered the hall. She curtseyed to the royal couple sitting on their dais. She held her arms out and welcomed Léofwyn in a hug. The young girl smiled up at her and giggled. Freya and Déorthain also sat nearby Brenna as she sat eating her meal. She smiled and laughed at their childish stories and chatter.
Glancing up she caught Lothiriel's eye and nodded with a soft smile. Lothíriel stood and made her way over and sat across from her friend. Eomer had come to stand behind his lady wife, with a supportive hand on her shoulder.
"You will need to rest for a time my friend," Brenna cautioned.
Déorwyn had come forth and herded the children away, sensing that the conversation was not meant for their ears. She already knew of the struggle that her lady Queen had been facing. Having taken person offense to the whisperings among the servants, Déorwyn had dismissed the chatty maids and exiled them from the Hall in disgrace sending a clear message that any who would speak against their sovereign were not welcome in the Halls.
She had stayed at the Queen's side as her friend and confidant over the years. They had shared all their troubles with one another. As Déorwyn and her husband had gone on to have other children the Queen had struggled and fought the grief of loss and feared her womb had become barren. In the early hours of the morning the Queen confessed what had happened and what Lady Brenna had done the evening before.
"What do you mean Brenna?" Lothíriel asked reaching up to take Eomer's hand.
"You my friend will need to rest and let your body heal for two, perhaps three months." Brenna cautioned. "Only then should you consider even thinking of trying again. You will have other children my friend. Your little heir will be conceived sometime this year. Two years after that you'll have twins, a boy and a girl."
Eomer swallowed thickly, nodding to Brenna. He and Lothíriel had begun to despair ever having children again. Brenna had healed his love's body and they would have other children. It warmed his heart and gave him hope.
"I will be back sometime next spring for the arrival of your son," Brenna said with a small smile. "Your heir will arrive next year Eomer King, have hope."
Brenna accepted the plate of bread and cheese with a smile. Eomer waved over a servant to bring her a tankard of honeyed mead. Brenna raised an eyebrow but chuckled at him.
She ate her meal with Elladan sitting at her side. Around the hall her Guard were eating and talking quietly among themselves. Eomer took his leave as his council called him away to meetings. Lothíriel sat with her friend and called for a maid to have a bath drawn for the Lady Brenna that evening.
Brenna stayed in Edoras for a month before she said that she needed to move on to Minas Tirith. In her time there she had healed a number of people and some of the fallow fields. The meadow she planted at Léofwyn's birth flourished and blew in the warm spring breeze that was sweeping across the lands. Many times Brenna had stood on the steps and watched the plains of tall grass swaying in the wind, rolling like green waves on the ocean. And not for the first time she longed for the sea.
Brenna hugged her friends goodbye. Eomer gifted her with a black mare from his own herd. Hiril and Ash snorted at her as she bid them farewell. She was reluctant to be parted with them, but knew that she could not take them with her. Hiril would foal later that year and Ash had earned his rest.
Brenna mounted her new horse, Daeris. The dark beauty was descended from the steeds of the king's house. She was a mighty gift, strong and broad. She had sleek lines, but was bred for war much like her forefathers. Brenna gently stroked her horse's neck and whispered to her in Sindarin. Daeris's ears flicked as she stomped and nickered softly.
When her group was ready, they turned and rode out of Edoras racing the rising sun. Eomer had assigned a group of twenty Riders to accompany the group to the border of their lands. A missive had been sent ahead to Aragorn and there would be a group of thirty Knights and Rangers waiting to escort Brenna to Minas Tirith. Folcwine and four others would be staying at Brenna's side until such a time that their king called for them.
Brenna rode on Daeris with her hair and cloak billowing out in the wind behind her. Rider and horse seemed to become one as they raced across the vast fields of grass. Brenna laughed with the joy of it and Daeris whinnied in reply. It was a breathtaking sight to behold.
A week later they reached the border of Rohan where they were greeted by the waiting escort from Gondor. The role of responsibility was passed off from Rohan to Gondor. Brenna thanked her Rohirric escort and nodded to them respectfully. She waved them goodbye and sent them home with blessings from the Valar.
Her journey continued to Minas Tirith. They stopped at a few of the towns and villages along the way for she and her group to find rest, but kept a steady pace to reach Minas Tirith. It was a long two weeks later that she had reached Minas Tirith. Aragorn and Arwen greeted her warmly and welcomed her and her Guard to their Hall.
Brenna was shown her rooms where there was a hot bath waiting. Hanna had once again been assigned to her. Though Brenna had not aged a day, Hanna was no longer the youth that she had been a decade before. She was now training younger girls to take her place eventually.
Brenna washed away the grime of travel and soaked peacefully in the bath. Oriel knocked and entered the room to wash her friend's hair and brush it out. She held out a towel for her and ushered her into the bedroom. Oriel handed her young friend a nightshirt and pushed her into the bed with the stern command to sleep.
That night Brenna conferred with the Valar, seeking their counsel. They told her to find rest while she could for her life would get very busy in the near future. Before the end of the year she would need to travel to Adnan in Harad to Heal his lands and help his people. Brenna knew that this would cause a stir with her friends and cause some quarrels.
Sighing she nodded and knew that it was Their will. Este smoothed her hair from her brow and touched her forehead softly with a smile. Elbereth sat beside her and kissed her brow, laughing lyrically as Brenna sighed softly. Manwe lounged regally nearby and watched as his beloved child leaned against his wife and sister. They all sat talking and reassuring their little warrior that all would be well and that she was doing such a good job. He just hoped that she would be able to endure the backlash that she would face from her next task. It pained him to know that she would face the anger and mistrust of her friends in the coming months.
Brenna awake the next morning to the sound of pounding on her door. She sleepily sat up in her bed and called out for the person to enter. Duvaissel and her twin sisters raced into the room and clambered on the bed with their aunt. Brenna laid back laughing and snuggling with her nieces. Oh how they had grown!
Oriel entered the room followed by Arwen who was carrying her newest niece, little Eleniel. Brenna smiled at her friend and beckoned them in the room. She spent the morning reacquainting herself with her nieces and her sister in-law. Oriel sat smiling at the children and her friends. It had been many years since her people had children. Though she and Angrod longed to have a family, they had decided to wait to bring a child into the world.
Hanna brought Brenna's meal, as well as additional refreshment for the other ladies and little princesses. Arwen sat in the corner nursing her infant daughter, while talking with her sister friend. She had missed the younger elleth greatly over the years.
Brenna eventually emerged from her bed and dressed with the help of Oriel. She donned a deep blue gown with her silver stars adorning the edges. She wore her necklaces from Lady Galadriel and King Thorin. She and the ladies left her rooms and headed towards the royal chambers. Aragorn was waiting for an audience with Brenna when she was ready. Arwen would be retiring to her rooms with her daughters, but she urged Brenna to seek Aragorn.
Brenna entered the hall and curtseyed to her friend and brother. He waved her off with a grin as he stood to embrace her. He escorted her to a seat beside him and asked of her health. Brenna assured him with a smile that she was well. He must have noticed something was bothering her because he asked her what was wrong.
The Sons of Elrond who had been sitting nearby glanced at the pair. The other elves in the room fell silent waiting for her reply. Brenna bit her lip and looked down knowing that they would not like her reply. She met Elladan's eye, begging for his understanding before she face Aragorn.
"I have been given my next task Aragorn," she said in a soft voice. "It is one that many, yourself included, will not like."
"Little sister," he said remorsefully. "What makes you hesitate? Can we not help you on this next task? Will you be in danger?"
Brenna thought very carefully about what to say. "The Valar have instructed me of my next task," she said to him. "I need to make way to Ithilien within the next month. Aragorn," she paused. "Word will be sent to me asking for help and I have no choice but to answer that call."
"Who would seek your aid that we would protest, Brenna?" he asked in confusion.
The Sons of Elrond had stepped to her side by then. Elladan regarded her with a carefully blank expression and knew deep in his gut that there was more that she hadn't yet told them. He knew that none of them would like her reply even before she said it.
"I'm charged with going to Adnan of Harad to help he and his people," she said in a quiet voice.
The silence after her admission was deafening. Then the loud protests and angry voices began. Each and every single word said was like a blow to her. She felt their anger and the condemnation in many of the eye of the Men. She knew that this would cause trouble and prayed to the Valar that everything would turn out alright. Feeling the answering warmth and light flare on her forehead, she heard the room around her go silent.
Even as the tears spilled from her eyes and slipped down her cheeks she stood. Ignoring the calls and protests of her friends, she left the room. Walking down the corridor swiftly, Brenna entered her rooms and began tugging off the dress. She pulled out a tunic and leggings and quickly changed. She rearranged her packs and packed what she would need.
Her heart ached as their words rang in her ears. She ignored the knocking on her door and tugged on her boots. Walking across her room she began strapping on her weapons and shouldered her packs. The knocking had finally stopped and she heard the footsteps retreat back down the hallway.
Drawing a deep breath, Brenna slipped from her rooms and made her way to the stables. She saddled Daeris herself and stored her packs. Glancing over her shoulders tearfully, she mounted the horse and made her way out of the courtyard. Swallowing thickly, she mounted her horse and rode down the seven levels of the Citadel, making her way out across the Pelennor Fields towards Ithilien.
Meanwhile up in the King's Hall Arwen unleashed her displeasure like an avenging angel. She told them in no uncertain terms that they had all clearly taken leave of their senses in regards to Brenna. She shamed her brothers for not defending her. She railed at the elves for not realizing that her friend needed their support. Then she turned her ire on her husband and told him in no uncertain terms that Brenna was doing the will of the Valar. Should Brenna not feel comfortable or welcome any longer in Arda, then she would either fade or sail to Valinor before her time.
Arwen then called Oriel to her and the pair went in search from Brenna. Finding her rooms deserted and her belongings gone, they quickly raised the alarm. Arwen took them to task for their carelessness and negligence.
Lord Glorfindel quickly assembled Brenna's Guard and set out after her. He mentally berated himself for not stepping in. Even across the room he could feel her pain and turmoil. He quietly regarded the Sons of Elrond as the morosely gathered their things. Elladan especially looked devastated to know that Brenna had left with no protection at all rather than face their protests.
Aragorn felt his lady's ire acutely. His pale complexion did little to belie his worry for his young sister. He knew that he should have curbed his tongue. Riders were sent out to their allies to keep an eye out for Brenna and escort her to safety until her Guard could catch up with her.
Brenna's Guard tracked her across the Pelennor Fields, through Osgiliath and heading right for Ithilien. They swore softly to themselves as they fought to gain on her lead. She had left an hour maybe two before them. Elladan just prayed that she remained safe and unharmed in her journey. He vowed to never again act so foolishly and rashly. His fear for her safety and the betrayal that they all felt in her admission of whom she was planning helping had overridden their common sense.
The things that they had said, he closed his eyes in shame. How could they have doubted her? How could they have forgotten all that she had done for them and all of Arda? How could they have forgotten whom she worked in the name of?
He would never forget the stunning sight of her brow flaring and the resounding silence. It was as if lightning had struck in the room when they had all paused and remembered themselves. But by then the damage was done.
The heartbreaking look on Brenna's face would haunt him for eternity. When she turned her betrayed eyes towards him, his breath left him. His head felt dizzy and clouded as he watched her flee the room. He had tried to follow but she had locked herself in her room. He left and returned to the King's Hall to find his sister in all her righteous glory taking them all to task.
Brenna knew that her Guard was not far behind. She spurned Daeris on, asking her friend to make haste. She wanted to reach the elvish settlement in Ithilien before they caught up to her. The ride had cleared her head a bit and she knew that it was a rash and impulsive decision to leave the protective walls of Minas Tirith alone. She just hoped that Legolas would understand and at least hear her out. If not, well she wouldn't think about that now.
It was just before dust that she rode into the elvish settlement in Ithilien. Legolas came forward with a concerned look seeing her alone. He was even more startled when she burst into tears and all but threw herself into his arms. She sobbed as if her heart was breaking. Her pain nearly had his knees buckling as he carried her into the large dwelling that he now called home. Though there was a separate dwelling that was made just for her, he felt that she needed to be nearby and looked after.
As he listened to her tale he swore softly. His eyes flashed in anger and knew that the others had better have a good explanation, they should know better. Telgalad and Faelchon both had better have a very good explanation as to why they had not stayed with her, even if they didn't fully understand or agree with her travel needs.
He murmured to her softly and brought her to the private rooms set aside in his wing of the Hall. He had a number of guest rooms, Brenna would be placed in the one directly next to his. Turning, he called out to have Lady Brenna's belongings brought to the room immediately, including the ones in the dwelling they had set aside for her.
Glancing down he realized that she had cried herself to sleep. An elleth stepped forward to assist Prince Legolas in caring for Lady Brenna. She urged him to leave the room briefly, and allow her to assist the lady in changing from her travel clothes. Elwen has stayed behind in Arda because she had not yet felt the call of Valinor. Seeing young Lady Brenna, she felt a strong urge to help the younger woman.
Brenna stirred and moved her heavy limbs, allowing Elwen to help her change. Elwen helped her into a nightshirt and tucked the girl in before calling Legolas back into the room. She told him that she would stay with the lady while he waited for the others to arrive as they were sure to follow. He regarded her for a moment, smiling slightly in thanks. He kissed Brenna's brow and left the room.
Legolas walked swiftly through the halls and called a small group of elves to the hall. There he gave them instructions to watch the borders and wait for a party traveling from the East. The elves in question looked startled, but Legolas assured them that Brenna had told him of a group that would come seeking aid for their home and people.
Legolas sat waiting for Brenna's Guard. He didn't have to wait very long. Not even an hour later signals were given that a large party was riding fast from the direction of Osgiliath. He stood and schooled his features. Stepping out into the courtyard, he greeted them coolly and welcomed them to Ithilien.
"Greetings Prince Legolas," Lord Glorfindel said with a bow. "We come seeking Brenna, please tell us that she has reached here safely."
"Aye," Legolas said in a cold flat tone. "My sister rode in a little over an hour ago, heart-broken and distraught. She no lies in a fitful sleep and will hopefully awaken recovered."
"How is she?" Elladan asked quietly.
Legolas turned cold hard eyes towards him. "She cried herself to sleep as I carried her to her rooms," he bit out. "For Valar's sake what is wrong with you all? Not even a full year from her last ordeal and you hurt her in such a way that I have not seen, nor will I ever see again. Mark my words Lord Elladan, should you harm her again I'll take her to the Gray Havens myself and sail with her before you get the chance to realize what you've done!"
"Now see here!" Elladan said just as angrily. "She's my fëa mate!"
"Then perhaps you ought to start acting like it!" Legolas shouted, startling everyone present. "My gwathel is in agony even now and you think I should have a care for what you think or feel? She is the Valar's blessed child, their little warrior and all of you have sent her fleeing from your very presence. She would not tell me exactly what was said, but it had to have been horrible for her to flee here alone. You will apologize, and by Eru it will not happen again! Have I made myself clear?"
Legolas's chest was heaving. Anger trembled through his limbs as he faced the group. Most of them had their heads down in shame and guilt. He faced Elladan and gave him a look of contempt and disdain.
"For years there have been those warning you in your actions regarding Brenna," Legolas said clearly. "Remember, friend, that there is a long line of both man and elf that would gladly trade places with you. Push her too hard and you will lose her if you haven't already."
Elladan felt his head spin. His brother laid a steadying hand on his arm while glaring at Legolas. He bit back a scathing remark knowing that it would do nothing productive. Lord Glorfindel also looked extremely displeased, but remained silent. The prince spoke true, but it did not make it any easier to hear.
They had failed their charge and felt the weight of it heavily upon them. The group were escorted to rooms and given refreshment. Legolas took his leave returning to the room that he had Brenna brought to. Elwen was sitting in the corner weaving a tapestry. She glanced up when he entered the room.
"Lady Brenna's Guard has arrived," he said quietly. "I fear that they will find a subdued and quiet young woman where once there was a lively and vibrant spirit."
"Worry not my prince," Elwen said. "Lady Brenna will recover. The Valar would not let her suffer so."
"Let us hope that is the case," he said standing. "Will you be alright watching over her? Do you need anything?"
"I'll be fine milord," she assured him with a smile. "Go and entertain your guests. I'll send word if she awakens or needs anything."
Meanwhile Oriel was silently fuming as she bustled around the rooms that she and Angrod had been given. Her fëa mate sat quietly and cautiously on the bed. She really could not believe the males and what they had done this time. Lamenting that she had not been there when it all happened, Oriel tugged a book from her pack and turned to face her fëa mate.
"You need not say anymore, my love," he said softly. "I know that we should have let her speak or come to her defense in many instances. Those of us that were not here for the War, at the very least should have supported her rather than maintain our silence."
"Yes, you should have," Oriel said vehemently. "I just don't understand Angrod! She has given us everything and yet again the overbearing and over protective males have hurt her. She is so young, and often feels alone in Arda. Even surrounded by all of us, she feels alone. Elladan will be lucky if she is even willing to see him after this."
Angrod stood and took her hands in his own. He leaned his forehead against hers and closed his eyes. He felt her stiff posture and slumped a bit.
"Please my love," he pleaded. "Please let me make this right."
"I'm not the one you need to apologize to," she said crisply as her resolve started weakening.
"I know and I will just as soon as I can," he murmured kissing her gently. "Don't shut me out melamin. I'm sorry for being a stubborn, pigheaded male."
Oriel laughed breathily and returned his kiss. She was still upset, but she could not turn him away. She had waited several millennia for this man. Her heart and soul belonged to him for the rest of time.
Brenna drifted and found herself in the protective and loving embrace of Manwe. He cradled her against his chest as he brought her to Elbereth's garden. She and the other Queens of the Valar were waiting. He lowered her gently to the ground, kissing her brow before taking his leave. Elbereth and the others soothed her and assured her that she was doing the right thing.
"Peace little one," Elbereth said. "You're doing so well. We're sorry that they've hurt you. Do not despair. They set out not quite an hour behind you and have reach Ithilien in search of you. Your fëa mate arrived frantic. You will forgive him, but do not let him or them get away with all that has transpired. Make him and them work for your forgiveness. We are most displeased with their actions and words."
Brenna nodded sadly, her heart ached. Este took her hand and began singing softly to her. Vana brushed out her hair and began weaving flowers in the braids. Brenna felt herself lull and drift to sleep. She felt the pain and sorrow wash away from her soul.
The light of the sun awoke her the next morning. the words of Este's song were on her lips as she drew her first waking breath of the day. In the corner of the room she noticed an elleth that she was unfamiliar with.
"Good morning milady," she said. "My name is Elwen. I have looked after you for Prince Legolas."
"It's good to meet you Elwen," Brenna said.
Brenna sat up, touching the flowers woven in her hair by Vana and smiled softly. Elwen stared in wonder before she got up to assist her in dressing. Brenna was garbed in a light green elvish dress. A cloak was brought forth and secured around her shoulder. Elwen walked ahead of her, leading her to the Hall where she knew Legolas would be.
The two ellith entered and the hall fell silent. Brenna carefully schooled her features and approached Legolas. He stood from his chair and went to her side. Gently he touched the blossoms woven in her hair before turning to quirk an eyebrow at the members of her Guard.
"I see you've had a visit from Vana, little sister," he said.
"The Valar called me to them and sought to comfort me," she said in a cool voice. "I ask that I impose upon your hospitality for a time my friend. I will need to await the summons from Adnan here before I make my way to his lands."
"You're always welcome here gwathel," he said firmly.
Brenna nodded and allowed him to escort her to a spot beside him. She would not meet the eye of any in her guard. Sitting quietly beside Legolas she ate the food provided listlessly. For all she cared it could have been sawdust.
When she finished, she stood. Legolas offered her his arm and turned to lead her towards the gardens. Their path however was blocked by a shattered looking Elladan. Brenna regarded him with a blank expression even though on the inside she was calling out to him, railing in despair and betrayal.
"I would like to have a word with you if you're so inclined Brenna," Elladan said softly.
Brenna glanced up at him. "I'm pretty sure I've heard all the words I can stomach from you and the others for the time being. You'll beg my pardon if I'm not feeling inclined for a repeat," she said in a deceptively calm voice.
"Please Brenna," Elrohir said. "Have a care. Do you not see he is hurting as well?"
Her cold empty laughter rang out in the hall, grating on their ears. "Yes, by all means remind me how I have to be the one to have a care," she state in an equally cold voice. "All I've done is care since coming here. Congratulations for helping me find my breaking point in caring. If you'll excuse me I have a job to complete. If I survive the next century it will be a miracle. Between the heart-break and betrayal by those sworn to protect me and the loss of my friends it will be a feat if I can even make it to the Gray Havens in one piece."
She looked around the room and saw the group pale. "Where was your care when the cutting words were spoken? Where was your care when you all turned against me?" she snorted and turned. "I've had enough care to last me a lifetime."
"Brenna, please," Elladan rasped. "Tell me you don't mean that. Please tell me that you honestly don't think that? I'm sorry Brenna. Please do not turn away from me."
Brenna gave him a heart-wrenching look before turning and leaving the Hall. Legolas stood awkwardly and watched her walk away. He looked towards Elladan somewhat sympathetically. They would have to work it out between themselves, though it would appear that many in the hall were deeply affected by her words.
Over the next few days Brenna mainly kept to herself. Elwen and Oriel were often in her company as was Legolas. She was beginning to withdraw into herself. Elladan's gaze followed her. His forlorn and broken form was starting to worry his brother and kinsmen. Legolas was starting to feel as if he were being torn between his loyalty to Brenna and his loyalty to Elladan who had been his friend and ally for many millennia.
Brenna entered one of the gardens on her fourth day there and paused. Elladan was sitting on a bench looking so broken that she felt her stomach drop. Elrohir was trying to say something to him, but he shook him off and put his head in his hands. She realized that she had done this. She had done just as much hurt as he had. They certainly needed to work on their communication skills she thought wryly as she made her presence known.
Elladan glanced up to see her standing there and scrambled to his feet. His brother stepped away, regarding Brenna before bowing and walking away to give them privacy. Elladan took a cautious step forward and paused watching her reaction. Seeing her relax he crossed to her and gently pulled her into his arms.
Brenna clung to him and buried her face in his chest. His arms tightened around her as he buried his face in the crook of her neck. She felt his body tremble and she embraced him tightly. They clung together for a moment, taking comfort in each other.
"I'm sorry melamin," he said hoarsely. "I'm so sorry."
Brenna held onto him. "I know my love," she said softly. "I'm sorry as well. I did not mean to hurt you, I just needed time."
"I know," he said in a ragged voice. "I should not have said the things that I did. Thousands of years on this earth and I have still not learned the patience and grace of my people. I'm sorry my love. Please, do not turn away from me now. Not now that I've found you."
"Oh Elladan," she whispered to him. "I'm not turning away from you. I'm not going anywhere you silly man. I love you Elladan. There is no other for me, you know this."
He looked up, cradling her gently, but firmly against his larger frame. Leaning down he rested his forehead on hers and closed his eyes. Their fëa reached out, soothing one another. Elladan trembled as he held her and straightened. He led her to one of the nearby benches.
"We have much to talk of my love," he said. "Tell me what it is you need of me and I will do all that I can."
Brenna sat talking with Elladan quietly in the garden for most of the day. He listened patiently and quietly. From time to time he would offer an opinion or advise, but he did not make the mistake of judging her for what she needed to do for the Valar.
Later that evening a small party of Haradrim arrived. They were escorted from the border to the main Hall where Legolas held an audience with them. They came bearing a missive seeking the aid of a lady elf that their leader had heard of. Even now, rumor of an elf maiden with the power to Heal was reaching far and wide.
Brenna and Elladan entered the hall and the men turned to regard her quietly. Brenna looked over them carefully and did not feel deception on their part. She stepped forward, with Elladan at her side. After reading the missive and listening to what the leader of the group had to say, she asked to have word sent that she was considering it.
When the man asked why she didn't agree right away, she simply brought up the fact that the Haradrim had invaded and sought to cause harm to her friends just a short year ago. The man looked abashed and nodded. He agreed to have one of his men ride back to Adnan. If Adnan agreed with her terms then he was to come to the border himself in good faith to meet with Brenna.
Two weeks later, a courier arrived breathless and travel worn. Adnan was due to reach the border in a few hours' time to answer Brenna's missive. He agreed to her terms and was coming to escort her himself. All of her Guard was welcome to accompany her.
Lady Elwen had insisted that she go with Brenna. Oriel was chagrined when the elleth pointed out that Brenna needed a companion with her at all times, especially in a foreign and somewhat hostile land. Oriel would be staying with her fëa mate. Legolas agreed and said that he and Gimli would be accompanying the group as well. He left another high ranking elf in charge during his absence.
Missives were sent out to the other realms. Lady Brenna was on the move and word needed to reach her allies should the worst come to pass. All of them were weary of her traveling the Harad, but there was no choice. It was the will of the Valar.
Brenna mounted Daeris and waited for the others to be ready to leave. They were traveling relatively light, though there were many extra water bladders. Their path was across the scorched and barren lands of Harad.
They rode to the border and met with Adnan. He greeted Brenna, bowing deeply and thanking her. As stated in his missive, he told her that long ago the river crossing through his land had dried and his people suffered greatly from it. What vegetation there was wasn't the most pleasant.
She nodded and knew he spoke true for the Valar had told her that it was so. Brenna looked him square in the eye and warned him the wrath of the Gods and all of Arda would be upon him if he was leading them into a trap. Her brow flared and he paled, knowing that she spoke true.
"I speak the truth milady," he breathed in a heavy accent. "I just want my people to prosper. I mean you no harm, please."
Brenna regarded him quietly, but nodded. They all turned their horses and followed the Haradrim chieftain East and South to his lands. Brenna knew immediately when they crossed the mountain pass that led them right into the heart of Harad. The land was parched, as if it had once been part of a lush landscape at one point in time.
Brenna could feel the cries of the earth below their feet. She stopped Daeris, much to the concern and confusion of those around her. Staggering, she dropped to her knees as the call became too much to ignore. Elladan and Elrohir knelt beside her as Haldir passed them a blanket for her to kneel on. With trembling hands, she buried her fingers deep in the dusty parched soil. Closing her eyes she began chanting, her voice deep and guttural in the ancient words that none present understood. Her brow flared brightly as her hands glowed a bright blue light. Her words washed over them as the power of her hands pulsed out far and wide.
She called forth the waters deep below the ground. Long since parched seeds were restored and the consistency of the ground beneath their feet began to change. The Haradrim cried out in shock as the felt the change around them and the power flowing off of Brenna.
Adnan knelt before the lady elf and reached out his hand to touch the small green sprout in awe. He glanced around and saw that her power was reaching far and wide. The once parched lands were healing right before his eyes.
The Sons of Elrond called out to her in alarm, telling her to pull back. Elladan caught her as she pulled her hands from the soil, cradling her to his chest. He felt the residual flare of her powers dance along his skin and shivered. Standing, he walked towards his horse. Passing her to his brother he mounted and reached down for Brenna. Once she was securely in his arms, he motioned for Adnan to lead them on.
The Haradrim chieftain scrambled to his horse, realizing that the lady was now incapacitated. He feared for the lady and called out for the party to ride out. It was a long hard ride to his holdings, but they could make it by the end of the day if they pushed. The elves whispered to the horses urging them on and speaking of the haste in which they needed for Lady Brenna.
Elladan held his love securely in his arms as they raced across the reviving lands. He looked down at her and marveled at the blessing that she truly was for all of Arda. It humbled him to know that she was his and that he had been given the gift of her heart. He just hoped that the coming years would be kind to them, to her, because she had already been through so much already.
It was past the evening meal when they rode up to a large holding that seemed to rise up out of the sandy ground. Elladan was certain the past what would have been a river centuries ago. He was sure that Brenna would be calling forth the waters for that river before her time there was done.
Adnan called out to the gate keepers and led them into the protective walls of his keep. Torches and fires lit the streets and buildings, glinting off the sandy stone that made up the buildings. Adnan called forth his servants to take the horses and help bring in the supplies. He personally escorted Brenna and her Guard into his Hall and brought them to the hallway where rooms were made ready for them.
Elladan carefully carried Brenna, while Elwen rushed forward to turn down the bed. Adnan asked if there was anything that they needed. He let them know that baths had already been drawn and were waiting in each of their rooms. When they replied that they didn't need anything he bowed and said that refreshment would be sent to their rooms and took his leave.
Elladan took Brenna's boots off while Elwen and Oriel got her clothes out. He took off her weapons and cloak before stepping back and telling them he would be staying in the rooms across the hall. The two ellith quickly undressed Brenna and helped her into the hot bath.
Brenna blurrily awoke in the tub. Oriel and Elwen washed her hair and let her soak in the exotic scented waters. Brenna tiredly scrubbed the dust and dirt from her body. The two older ellith helped her from the bath and dried her off. They pulled a nightshirt over her head and brushed her long hair out. Once she was clothed the helped her into the bed.
A knock on the door brought a servant bearing food and refreshment for the ladies. Behind him entered the Sons of Elrond and Angrod. Their food and refreshment was brought in the room as well. Elladan sat on the edge of Brenna's bed watching her eat, making sure that she had no ill effects from the amount of power that she had wielded earlier that day.
They sat quietly talking late into the night. Various members of Brenna's Guard stopped in off and on throughout the night to check in on their charge. Those that had not seen her heal before were amazed at what they had seen.
Soon even the elves grew tired and retired for the night. Elwen would be staying in the room with Brenna. Oriel an Angrod were in the room next to hers. Lord Glorfindel's room was on the other side of Brenna's. The Sons of Elrond were immediately across from Brenna.
Brenna stirred tiredly the next morning. Elwen slept on the other bed in the room, but began waking when she heard Brenna moving. Brenna splashed water on her face and stretched her tired muscles. Looking around she realized that she must have fallen asleep on the others at some point.
"Good morning Elwen," Brenna greeted warmly.
"Good morning Lady Brenna," she replied with a bright smile.
"Come now Elwen, not titles between friends," Brenna said softly. "It's just Brenna, please."
Elwen nodded and turned to help select a gown for Brenna for the day. They opted for a deep purple gown with the softest of lavender under layers. It was elvish in design, empire waist and silver stars adorning the borders.
Brenna sat patiently as Elwen pulled her hair into an intricately woven braid. Elladan announced himself and knocked on the door. Brenna rolled her eyes and grinned as she called for him to enter the room. He entered with a smile and sketched a bow to her and Elwen.
"I've come to escort you both to the large Hall where we are to break our fast," he said.
Brenna laughed and looped her arm through his. Elrohir smiled kindly at Elwen and offered her his arm as they made their way to the great hall. Brenna heard the voices of her Guard and smiled softly. She was greeted by her Guard, but also Adnan who bowed deeply. His people looked on in shock. Oriel and Angrod had caught up to them, thus the three pairs of elves entered the Hall. Thus far the people thought it amazing to see elves, but seeing three ellith, they were truly awed. Brenna flushed and looked down at the attention that she was receiving.
Elladan squeezed her side, causing her to squeak and giggle. She faced him with wide eyes and blushed even deeper. He let out a loud, joyous laugh. She looked at him with laughter sparkling in her green eyes and grinned with a slight shrug.
"I didn't know that you were ticklish, love," he said in a highly amused voice.
"Now you do," she murmured.
"Come, my friends," Adnan said beckoning them to come further into the room and be seated. "Break your fasts with us. There is much to discuss and celebrate. Lady Brenna, you have already given a great gift. On the horizon we can already see the tufts of green."
Brenna nodded her head to the man. "I would like to see where the river you spoke of in your letter once was," she said softly. "Perhaps I can find out why it has run dry and fix it."
"If you can indeed do that, then we will forever be in your debt," he said in a hoarse voice.
Brenna was seated with Elladan to one side and Elwen to her other. Elrohir sat beside her new friend with Oriel and Angrod on the other side. The group sat talking quietly and eating. The foods were rich and exotic. There were different spices and seasonings in them. Brenna felt the conversation murmur around her. As she reached for her glass, her hands began to tremble. She looked to Elladan in a panic. He whispered in elvish to his brother as Brenna buried her face in his chest.
The visions washed over her as she clutched at Elladan's jerkin. He ran a soothing hand down her back as she shook and murmured quietly in elvish what she was seeing. Flash! She saw a garden covered in sand. Flash! She saw Adnan and his wife looking down at an infant. Flash! She saw the river flowing once more. Flash! She saw Oriel and Angrod boarding the ship; she was heavy with child on their departure. Flash! Flash! Flash!
Brenna sighed and relaxed against Elladan, even as he fielded the questions and concern from Adnan. She murmured that she was alright. Glancing up she noticed the tense posture of her Guard and friends. Turning to her side she met Oriel's eye and smiled. Oriel and Angrod had such a look of hope and longing in their eyes that it took her breath away. She nodded to them and turned back to Adnan.
"I am well Lord Adnan," she replied. "I sometimes have dizzy spells. It is a side effect of my gifts," she told a half truth.
He nodded unsurely, but accepted her answer. Standing he offered to escort her and her very large entourage around his holdings. Brenna stood and nodded to him. They walked through many archways. Brenna marveled at the completely unique architecture found in Adnan's holdings.
They came around a corner and Brenna had a sense of déjà vu. There through the archway she turned, ignoring the calls of Adnan. Elladan put a hand on the small of her back, steadying her as they went. She walked forward seen the sand that had swept over the walls and covered this section of the holdings.
Adnan paused looking at her in confusion. Her ring pulsed and the wind picked up, causing the locals to cry out in alarm. Adnan stepped forward, but watched her hands glow as she raised her arms, pushing the wind and sands away. Slowly but surely brick by brick, stone by stone, a garden or the bare bones of one was emerging.
Pulling back, Elladan held her up. She took a step forward and looked at the parched and choked garden forlornly. Elladan pulled the cloak from his shoulders and placed it on the ground where she intended to kneel. Glancing over she asked for Oriel to get her burlap pouch and turned back to the daunting task before her.
Elladan knelt next to her, lending her what support he could. Her Guard fell into a protective formation around her as she let herself fall away. Burying her hands deep into the brittle and dry soil, she began to sing. Song after song, she chanted and sang pushing further and wider. Calling forth the waters that were deep in the grounds she drew them up towards the surface slowly. The long dormant seed became fruitful, thriving and flourishing.
Brenna turned blindly and took the pouch that Elladan now held. Carefully and reverently she took a handful of the blossoms of Vana. She began singing the songs taught to her by the Valar and her powers flare, pulsing like a heartbeat within the ground. The blue haze now engulfed the entire stronghold and the lands beyond its walls. Adnan fell to his knees watching the King's Garden come to life before his eyes.
Elladan called out to Brenna, urging her to pull back. She sighed, sitting back on her heels. Elladan took a cloth and gently cleaned her hands of the soil. He looked around him and saw that the garden was coming back and pulsing with life. Gently he helped Brenna stand and picked up his cloak. He shook it out and draped it over his arm, leading her away from the garden.
Adnan touched on of the foreign flowers. "What are these blossoms?" he asked in a whisper.
"They are flowers of Vana, one of the Valar. They are a gift to Arda and its people," she replied in a lethargic voice.
His had trembled as he touched the vibrant blossom. Out of the corner of his eye his wife approached and knelt beside him. She had seen and heard what had happened and smiled at her husband. This was a good omen for their people. Perhaps this lady elf really could help them after all.
Brenna was led to her rooms to rest for a time. She reemerged after the midday meal and greeted the others that were waiting in the great hall. Elladan crossed to her side and led her to one of the open chairs. Word had already spread about the fields to the west of the old river and the King's Garden among the people in Adnan's tribe.
Brenna knew that she would need to leave within the week. Though Adnan was an honest man, she did not trust the rest of the Haradrim. She would aid him for he was a good and noble man, but she needed to leave by the week's end if she wanted to leave Harad with her life and Guard intact.
Brenna murmured as much to Elladan and the others quietly. They nodded and understood that their time in Harad would be brief indeed. Elladan tucked her hand in the crook of his arm and dropped a kiss on her brow.
"Lady Brenna," Adnan said approaching. "How is it that you knew of the garden?"
Brenna glanced at him and shrugged. "I could feel the earth and plants calling to me," she said. "There was such a hunger and a thirst in garden. I could not ignore it's plea."
"You have given hope back to my people milady," Adnan said in a heavy accent.
Brenna smiled and nodded to him. She turned back to Elladan with a concerned look on her face. Elwen went to her side and asked if everything was alright. Brenna nodded and glanced around uneasily. She leaned into Elladan who murmured to her that all would be well.
Turning to Adnan once more she addressed him. "I will see about the fields surrounding the stronghold this afternoon and tomorrow. After that we will head back to the border. On our way I will stop and do what I can to restore the river," she told him. "Then I must make haste to Gondor. I have a friend who will need me."
"Of course milady," he said. "Any help you can give is most welcome."
He escorted her group towards the main gate and just outside it. They passed many peddlers and markets along the way. Brenna asked if they could perhaps stop on the way back through to which Adnan warmly told her that they were more than welcome.
Legolas kept a close eye on his little sister as did their entire party. The men in their group shifted uneasily begin behind the enemy lines so to speak. They watched vigilantly as she healed the parched and scorched lands. Slowly with a little effort and time, the buds sprouted. Brenna swayed and leaned heavily on Elladan as she finished.
She was able to still stand on her feet but she was tired. He and Elrohir whispered elvish words of healing, and soothed the ache as best they could. Only real rest would help her, but she would find that with a good's night rest.
They passed back through the city walls and stopped in the many stalled. Adnan introduced them to different vendors. Brenna was interested in the different spices and plants. She was absolutely enthralled by the rich and vibrant fabrics. Elladan and the others nodded to the vendors and purchased anything that seemed to catch her interest.
Brenna and her group made their way back towards the great hall. She asked Adnan if he would possibly be open to trading in the coming years. With a cryptic smile she told him that his holdings would become a bustling and thriving hub or commerce in the coming years. He nodded numbly and bowed to her as she took her leave.
The following morning Brenna awoke early and made her way back out to the surrounding lands. Even now she could still see the sprouts poking from the ground. She knelt down and buried her hands in the soil, calling forth the water in the land, healing the hurts of years long past.
It was a tired, dusty, and grubby Brenna that Elladan carried up to her room. He left her in the able hands of her friends Oriel and Elwen. The pair helped her to wash and change for the evening. She would take her supper in her rooms and retire early in the evening. Her party would be leaving at dawn.
Adnan rose early to personally escort Brenna's group back to the border. He assembled a sizeable party to go with them, lending additional protection to make sure that the lady elf made it back safely to her kinsmen and home.
Midday they reached what was once a mighty riverbed. Brenna paused at what she perceived was the edge of it. She urged Adnan to stay on the opposite side. When he went to protest Brenna told him that he would need to be on the side where his people were until the waters were calmed. He looked confused until he saw her hands glowing.
Brenna urged everyone to stay at least ten feet away from what looked like the edge of the riverbed. Her ring pulsed and she started chanting. They felt the ground quake beneath them. In her mind's eye Brenna could see far north there was a diversion to the river that had once flowed there. It was done by the darker forces for purposes she dared not think of. Her chanting picked up and her hair seemed to dance as her power pulsed a steady tattoo.
Slowly, a steady trickled flowed down the parched, cracked riverbed. In the distance the sound of rushing water could be heard. Brenna pulled back and called for everyone to get on their horses and get as far away from the river as they could. Adnan waved his thanks and turned back towards his city as the waters came rush back down the ancient river banks.
Brenna and her party rode swiftly away from the banks. They made it about a mile away before the flood of water raced down the river, heading further south towards the sea. She just prayed that the people downstream would be alright.
Her group rode straight through the night, determined to make it to Ithilien by dawn. As the sun crept up in the sky she sighed in relief. There about two hours away in the distance was the tree line that indicated the border of Ithilien.
Upon reaching the elvish settlement Brenna was startled to find that both Aragorn and Eomer were there. Both appeared ready to ride to war. Both men sagged in relief seeing her returned safely.
"Bema!" Eomer exclaimed. "Tell me you'll not go gallivanting to those lands again Brenna!"
Glancing at both of them in confusion, Aragorn explained that along with her letters, word has spread of plans to do her harm during her time in Harad. She shivered, knowing that the urgency to leave was a message from the Valar. Elladan glanced at her and saw he go pale.
"I didn't know that there really was a plan," she murmured. "It was just a feeling I had. It was a bone deep feeling that we had to leave as soon as possible."
"It is good you heeded that feeling Brenna," Aragorn said. "The borders will be reinforced for the time being. We feel it best if you away from here for the near future until it settles down."
Brenna nodded tiredly. "Can we rest here for a day or so before we leave?" she asked weakly. "Healing a desert and calling forth a river is tiring business."
Both kings looked at her with raise eyebrows, but nodded. Elladan sent them a bland look and told them that he would explain once Brenna was settled in her rooms and resting. Legolas led them to the rooms that she had been using before their departure. Elwen and Oriel both went to their rooms while another elleth was summonsed to assist Brenna. Elladan took his leave and went to address his brother in-law.
Brenna's Guard recounted everything that had happened in Adnan's lands. They too had heard whispers regarding Brenna. So when she was insistent that they leave as soon as possible the fully supported it. They were gone for less than two weeks and had ridden long and hard to return home.
Brenna slept through the night and late into the next day. Even then she stayed in her room and mostly in her bed. Her friends came to check on her but she dosed off and on. It had taken a lot out of her to summon forth the river.
When she awoke the day after, she felt renewed and refreshed. The Valar had visited her dreams. They praised her and soothed her. She had done well and gained a valuable ally in Adnan. Though it would take a long time, his people would one day become valuable trade partners. His lands directly bordered Ithilien and his people would also act as a barrier to the Men of the West from their enemies East and South.
The days and weeks after passed quickly for Brenna. She spent time in Gondor, mainly Minas Tirith. Long days were spent sitting with Arwen and her nieces. For a few weeks she went to Dol Amroth, visiting Imrahil. Elphir introduced her to his lady wife and their two children. Erchirion introduced his wife, as did Amrothos. She went to the meadow that she had planted years before and walked among the blossoms near the Sea. It was the closest that she had felt to Valinor in a very long time.
Brenna traveled back north and visited briefly with Eowyn and Faramir. She met their daughter Anniel. They passed through the elvish settlement, where Elwen insisted that she would now be traveling with Brenna. She told her friend that she had missed her and that it gave her a new purpose and meaning to be there for her young friend, much like Oriel.
It was then that she parted with the Sons of Elrond, reminding them that Aragorn would need them in the coming years. Her parting with Elladan was difficult on both of them, but they knew that they would see each other soon. The Sons of Elrond rode towards Minas Tirith on the morning that Brenna had decided to move on from Ithilien.
Eventually, Brenna's party made their way North to Edoras. She helped the heavily pregnant Lothíriel through the later stages of her pregnancy, assuring her that all would be well. It was late in the night that Brenna was called into the Royal chambers.
Lothíriel fought and struggled to bring Eomer's heir into the world. He sat behind his wife just as he had during the birth of his daughter. After hours of labor and still hours more of pushing, Elfwine made his entrance into the world. The babe had a set of lung on him and a head full of golden hair.
Brenna healed her friend, soothing the hurt of labor and taking special care to make sure that there were no linger affects from the labor. Eomer and Lothíriel thanked her profusely for their son. Brenna just smiled and said that it was the will of the Valar.
She stayed with them in Edoras for a few months before she decided to spend some time walking the woods of Lorien and heading north. For the next two decades Brenna would spend wandering constantly, sometimes staying months or years at a time. She attended the births of the rest of her friend's children. After Elfwine, six months later Eldarion, the heir of Gondor was born. Two years after that Eomer and Lothíriel welcomed twins, Eomód and Elfwyn.
Life went on. Brenna lived and grew in wisdom and power. When she grew weary she went to Rivendell and word was sent to Elladan. The lands of Arda flourished with her aid. The elves aided the transition as best they could. Most of them fought the call of the Sea and felt the longing and the ache to return home, but none more keenly than Brenna. The Valar often counseled her on her tasks and aided her when she called for them. She learned a great deal from them, but longed to be home. They assured her that time would pass quickly for her, and so it did.
