Ch.36: One Too Many Secrets

"I still don't get why you can't come and have dinner with us tonight…" James said for the millionth time that day, heightening Kendall's discomfort over his whole situation.

"Yeah man, it's taco day!" Carlos said, inadvertently making matters worse "And these guys have the BEST tortilla I've ever tasted!"

"I know!" Kendall exclaimed, frustrated "You've told me that a million times already, Carlos, I know, okay? I know…but, you know, it's not even MY idea…Elena's forcing me to!"

"Maybe you shouldn't have gotten so into the fighting scene this afternoon," James said concernedly "You hurt Jett pretty bad this time, Kendall,"

"I should've probably hurt him worse…" Kendall mumbled darkly.

"Hey, hey now, don't go on saying things like that or you'll never hear the end of it back in production," James said logically "It's bad enough they're making you guys spend time together outside of working hours, don't make it worse…"

"Yeah well if Jett wasn't such a-such a-pathetic piece of a scumbag then maybe, maybe, I'd consider being nicer to him. You know, if he wasn't a jerk, or the self-centered bastard that he is…" Kendall rambled furiously.

The other three just rolled their eyes. They could see why production was worried over Kendall and Jett's troubling relationship.

"Well then, we're ready to go…" Logan said as he straightened his tie and held his hand out to Carlos who took it immediately "James?"

"I'm good to go as well," the pretty boy answered while finishing some last touches with his flawless hair.

"Good bye Kendall…see you…later, I guess?" Logan offered weakly while giving Kendall a small smile which, try as he might, the blonde was unable to return.

James pecked his boyfriend on the lips one last time before following Carlos and Logan out the door, the three of them already laughing while imagining the fun night they had ahead of them.

Kendall sighed as he was left alone in the hotel room. God, he hated this.

Sulking, he went into his closet and rummaged it for a bit until he found a nice, black tux and a white formal shirt.

Cringing as he recognized the clothes he'd worn when he and James had announced to the world that they were going to get married.

Kendall was seriously beginning to think they'd jinxed their own wedding by going public with it so quickly. And he was angry at himself for messing up constantly after he'd been the one to propose marriage to James.

Of course he hadn't been aware, at the time, of all the problems that would arise from this trip. Jett, however, had been a constant nuisance through it all and for the first time, as Kendall recalled Jett's words to him on James' birthday, the blonde wondered if they truly were going to make it to the altar, or if it had all been child's play on their part.

He sighed one last time before finishing some lasting touches on his hair and fixing his tie before he headed out to the Lobby where he was supposed to meet with Jett.

Such was his luck that on his way to the Lobby he bumped into none other than Jo. The actress blushed when she saw him and averted his gaze as she kneeled down to pick up her purse which had fallen during the crash.

"Here, I'll help you with that," Kendall offered weakly, aware that if he and Jett had some unresolved issues right now…well, he also had unresolved issues with Jo as well and he'd have to fix both situations if he ever wanted to get out of this mess and be able to marry James with a clean conscience.

"Thanks," Jo said, she then looked him over and nodded approvingly "Nice. You going somewhere?"

"Kind of," Kendall admitted grudgingly "You?"

"Not really, other than dinner with the rest of production- why?" Jo asked him "Aren't you coming with us today? I saw James, Carlos, and Logan go down already to the set- it's taco day!"

"I know, I know…" Kendall said with a frustrated sigh "It's just…I have to go…somewhere…with Jett…"

"He cornered you too, didn't he?" Jo asked him softly.

"Huh? Yes…how'd you know?" Kendall asked her blankly.

"He sent me pictures of our…you know…and threatened to tell Frankie if, if I didn't tell my manager to set him up an interview in a famous talk show…who knows, Jett's a jerk right?"she told him.

"Oh, so it's just now you realize it…" Kendall said with a roll of his eyes "Jett's-making me go on a date with him…but you can't tell anyone! Especially James!"

"He's what?" Jo exclaimed, outraged "Oh Kendall, he can't do that! That's stepping WAY out of the line…you-you can't let him do that to you!"

"I have no choice," Kendall mumbled glumly "Did you know he had a crush on me for a while now?"

"I'd-I'd guessed, yeah," Jo admitted "But at times it seemed so unlikely I just- I thought it was all in my head or something…you two hate each other!"

"Yeah, well, apparently the hating part was one-sided," Kendall said darkly.

"Kendall, you HAVE to tell James what's going on…" Jo said immediately "You've got to let him know what's going on with Jett and-and you have to tell him what happened with us as well…this isn't right,"

"He can't find out, Jo, he can't!" Kendall said anguished "Promise me you won't tell him!"

"Oh, I won't say anything alright, if you don't want me to, I told you that already…" Jo said, holding up her hands "But Kendall, don't you think you're keeping way too many secrets from him? You guys are going to get married and…let's face it, what you're hiding from him right now…it's no light matter Kendall…"

"It was just a kiss Jo, it meant nothing…" Kendall said impatiently, with a roll of his eyes.

"Didn't it?" The actress asked him quietly.

"Yes! I mean-no! No, Jo, it DIDN'T mean anything!" Kendall exclaimed, growing agitated.

"If you're so sure of that then why are you so afraid of telling James about it?" Jo fired back at him.

"'Cause he'd never believe me!" Kendall said "You don't know how James is…how jealous he gets whenever I so much as look at you… a-and I have to spend half my time pretending I don't even like you in order to convince him that I'm…that I'm not into you anymore…" Kendall finished.

"Kendall, I love you," Jo said finally with a sigh "I really wish I didn't at this point but I do…"

Kendall sighed as well as he ran a hand through his hair.

"I love you too," he admitted finally "And I'll probably always will Jo, and believe me when I say that- I'd totally pick you if…" he couldn't finish the sentence.

"If James weren't here?" Jo finished for him with a sad smile "Yeah, I know that Kendall…but you don't have to worry about me anymore. I have Frankie, and he's a sweetheart and, you know, even if things don't work out between us…I'm a big girl now, Kendall, I can take care of myself, you know? I'll find someone…eventually. We'd never be happy together…not now anyways, after everything that's happened in the last year and stuff…but I don't want to have to let you go, Kendall…"

"Then don't," Kendall said, taking her hand "Jo…you said so yourself, we wouldn't work out as a couple…but we've been doing totally fine as friends for the last couple of days! Let's try and keep it that way, shall we? No more confusing thoughts or…weird…conversations like this one?"

"Agreed," Jo said with a smile which disappeared quickly as she sighed once again "Well…since that's cleared up I guess it's time for you to leave now…"

"Huh?" Kendall asked, having temporarily forgotten what he was supposed to be doing right now.

"Don't you have a date to go on?" Jo asked him with a hint of bitterness in her voice "And do me a favor, will you, and by the end of it smack that douche bag in the back of the head for me…"

"Will do," Kendall said, turning pale from what he knew was awaiting him.

He went down to the Lobby and glowered at Jett who was waiting for him with a bouquet of violet lilacs in his hand which he offered to Kendall when the blonde reached him.

"I hate lilacs," is how Kendall greeted Jett with a very fake smile, waving off the bouquet.

Jett narrowed his eyes.

"You know, if that's the way we're going to be all night…" he began threateningly but Kendall cut across him with a scoff.

"Oh, so you want me to lie about things I hate as well? Last time I checked, dating someone did not imply they liked every single damn thing you did!"he said.

"Okay, alright, alright, I'm sorry, my bad…" Jett said, offering the bouquet to another pretty brunette girl who was walking by them and giving her a wink. She took them blushing and giggling a bit before walking away.

Kendall rolled his eyes.

"Charming," he said "So…are we going out or not?"

"Most definitely," Jett said before offering his hand to Kendall who sighed before taking it, letting Jett lead him into a limo.

This would be a long night, indeed…

A/N: Just HOW long a night will it be indeed? Well, find out next chapter how Kendall will survive this hectic date!
