Chapter 35
"Violet?" To say Matt was surprised would be an understatement. He took a deep breath and looked at the bruises on her arms and could feel his blood boil. After taking a deep breath and trying to calm down he realized his niece was still standing outside, "Come in sweetheart." He ushered her inside and flicked on the light.
Once in the light Matt could clearly see she had bruises and fist marks all over her body, some new and others old. She also looked older then nine, her brown hair tousled and her face looking like she'd just gone through a war and all the trauma to go with it.
"Tell me what happened Violet," Matt led her to the couch, "I want to know everything." To keep himself from breaking down completely he turned on his 'cop' mode and tried to pretend like this was just another case. Doing that though was becoming harder by the second.
What he wanted to do was march straight to his sister's house beat up his good for nothing brother in-law and then arrest him for every count he could think of.
"Matt, what's going on?" Gabby called out as she walked from the bedroom into the living area, "Violet." She stopped in her tracks and looked at the scared nine years old.
"Hi Aunt Gabby," She looked at her briefly before looking at the floor, as if she was ashamed for her to see her like this.
"Oh sweetie," She went to sit beside her but one look from Matt told her he needed to talk to her alone first. She decided to give them some time but she needed to help; she couldn't just go back to sleep and pretend like she never saw this, "I'll go and make you some hot chocolate and some of the cupcakes we have," She turned to walk into the kitchen.
"Alright Violet," Matt looked at her, "I need you to tell me what happened. Why are you here?"
"I couldn't take it anymore," She said tears forming in her blue-green eyes, "Dad, he hits us and he…. He…." Her tears became more rapid in movement and soon she was sobbing, "He…." Her cheek's reddened and suddenly Matt felt sick to his stomach.
"It's alright sweetheart its not your fault," He tried to assure her.
"But I know its wrong. I didn't know what to do. I can't tell my teachers anymore. He has connections everywhere." She said with fear, "I'm never allowed to have friends over and Mom doesn't have any friends. Dad was furious when you called Mom but… he knew…. He knew if you didn't come over you'd come anyways. He wanted to be prepared. I know you can help." She looked up at him, "Please help us!"
"Oh I will," He hugged her and rubbed her back, "I promise I will."
"Even if Dad can hurt you."
"Sweetheart," He shook his head, "Your father won't be able to hurt me, I'll have the entire Chicago Police Department on my side. Now how about we call your Mom and let her know you're safe."
"No," She shook her head, "Dad doesn't let her talk on the phone. He'll know and then he'll come and get me!" She was shaking with fear and she buried her face in Matt's shirt.
"Don't worry sweetheart he won't know," He gently kissed the top of her head. Seeing Gabby come back into the room he made eye contact with her, "How about you go with Aunt Gabby to the kitchen to drink your hot chocolate," He suggested. He knew he'd loose his temper talking to her father and didn't want her to hear what he said.
Violet looked at her Uncle and to Gabby, "I guess," She once again looked down at the floor.
Knowing the girl, for some reason felt uncomfortable being alone with her made Gabby a little worried but she knew now wasn't the time to be playing paramedic. Right now she needed to be the girls loving and caring aunt.
"I have a nephew who's around your age," She stepped forward, "I think I still have some LEGO's in the spare bedroom for when he comes and visits. Do you want to go and play with them?"
"Okay," She finally gave her a smile and stood up to walk with her.
Giving Gabby a smile Matt reached for his cell phone and found his sister's cell phone number he waited, after two rings it got answered.
"Hello?"
"Christie," Matt tried his best to remain calm, "Can you go downstairs or…. I need to talk to you."
"Wha- Matt?" She rubbed the sleep out of her eyes and sat up in bed, "What's going on?"
"I need to talk to you Christie but… just trust me please."
"Matt," She warned, she was getting impatient, as she didn't know what her brother was trying to do, "What is it you need to tell me this early in the morning, I was sleeping."
"You- wait… isn't Jim there too?" He asked on the off chance he might not be.
"No, he, ah he had to go into the office early." A lie she knew it was because he went to see his girlfriend.
"Good. Don't be mad all right but Violet's here, she came on her own around fifteen minutes ago. She's all right just a little scared; she told me everything Christie, you need-"
"Oh Matt," She shook her head, "Violet has an overactive imagination, whatever she told you she's making it up. Did she tell you Jim hits us? She's been telling that story for years, it isn't true."
"Christie I saw the bruises."
"Matt!" She raised her voice, "Please just forget about it! You don't know what you're getting yourself into. I'll come and pick Violet up."
He hated doing this, he really did but he didn't see any other choice, "No."
"What? You can't do that."
"Yes I can, I'm not going to release a child, let alone my niece into an unsafe environment and any judge in the city is going to agree with me. You can have her back in the morning. We'll see a judge and then they can decide what to do."
'Matt," She began to cry, "Please don't do this."
"Christie I'm going to make sure he never hurts either one of you again."
"Matt please, just let us go away somewhere."
"No! I've seen this before and I'm not letting it happen to my own family!" He ended the phone call and took a long deep breath.
"Everything alright babe?" Gabby asked walking towards him.
"No," Matt shook his head, "Where's Violet?" He looked around her.
"She fell asleep on the floor, I put a blanket over her. She's out like a light. I wasn't sure if you wanted to move her to a couch or if Christie's coming to get her.
"No, no she's fine for now." He ran a hand through his hair, "She's in denial. Told me Violet has an overactive imagination and-" He stopped realizing Violet would be able to hear them if she woke up.
"Lets go into the bedroom and talk. You still have those baby monitors for when Daniela comes over?"
"Yeah. Why?"
"She might be scared when she wakes up. We can put in on one way mute; we an hear her but she can't hear us."
"Good idea." Gabby went to retrieve the items and brought them back into the room. She put the 2nd one in the spate bedroom and the master control one with her and Matt to their bedroom.
"Alright," Gabby placed it on the nightstand and then turned to look at him, "What did Christie say?"
Early the next morning Gabby and Matt brought Violet to District twenty-one; Matt knew that child abuse was hardly ever an Intelligence Case but he wanted to let Voight know what wen down before it all blew up in his face.
"Uncle Matt do I have to tell anyone else what happened?" Violet stood holding tightly onto his hand as he entered his code and placed his finger to gain access to the locked unit.
"We'll see sweetheart," Matt didn't want to promise her anything, "But either Aunt gabby or I will be with you alright."
"What about Mom?" She asked, "Is he going to hurt her?"
"We'll try and make sure she's okay," Matt answered as best he could. "Now how about you go with Aunt Gabby and meet her older brother." He suggested.
"Yeah my brother will love you," Gabby took Violet's hand and led her over to Antonio's desk.
"Hey Sis," Antonio, and the whole unit had known something as u when Matt walked into he unit with Violet and Gabby. He figured he'd hear about it later after Mat talked to Voight.
"Hey," She greeted, "This is Matt's niece Violet. Violet can you say Hi?"
'Hi," She shyly waved, "Is that Diego?" She pointed to a school picture,
Seeing her brother's confused face Gabby explained, "I told her about Diego when I let her play with the LEGO's he keeps at my house. It was in a box that had already been moved to Matt's.
"Oh yeah," Antonio nodded, "Yeah Diego's ten. He's a good kid. To smart for his own good. How old are you sweetie?"
"Nine, almost ten."
"Well I think you'd get along great with Diego. I have two daughters as well," He pointed out their pictures to her.
Violet smiled and seemed a bit more relaxed. She sat down and waited for Matt to come out of the office. "Uncle Matt!" She ran and hugged him tightly, "Can I see my Mom now?" She asked hopefully.
"Later sweetheart. Right now my boss called a friend of his and she's going to come down here and ask you some questions."
"No!" She shook her head, "I want Mom!"
"How about we-"
"No!" Violet screamed. "I-I-" She hiccupped through her sobs.
"You want to come with me?" Erin stepped forward, without knowing all of the details she already knew what had happened to this poor little girl; and after having gone through a similar childhood wanted to help in any way she could.
"No," Violet shook her head, "I want my Mom."
"Well how about you come and tell me all about her. I bet she's really nice."
"She is," Violet finally met her eyes, "Can Uncle Matt come?"
"Sorry sweetie," Matt looked at her, "I have to stay here but Aunt Gabby can go."
"Okay," Violet agreed and went with Gabby and Erin into the break room.
"Alright," Antonio tuned to look at Matt, "What happened?"
"That's my niece Violet," He answered lowering his voice, "She came to my apartment late last night saying her father beats her and her Mom up.. I don't…. I don't know I get the feeling my sister might be hurting her too."
"Oh man," Jay sympathized with his co-worker and friend, "What are we going to do?"
"Right now we sit tight and wait for SVU to get here and take her statement. I called Child Services too because we can't let her see het mother until we know for sure what's been happening."
"I told Christie she could see her today but even if she hasn't been hurting her she's still in denial about this whole thing; They're going to all need a lot of help.
"WHERE'S MY DAUGHTER?!" Running up the stairs were Jim and Christie.
"I tried to stop them but-" Platt was just behind them.
"That's alright we got this," Voight looked at the two parents, "You're just in time, Ruzek, Olinsky take them to integration one and two."
"You have no right to interrogate us! One of your detectives kidnapped my daughter!" Jim yelled, "My wife told me what happened."
"My brother took her!" Christie pointed at Matt.
"Well we heard a different story and-"
"Mom!" Violet ran out of the break room and tried to get to her mother but Matt was quick to pick her up.
"LET ME GO!" She screamed, "I WANT MY MOM!"
"See, see she wants to come back," Christie spoke up, "He's just mad because he didn't know about her. He's the one who's crazy. He's the one who's like our mother not me." She was sobbing now.
"Christie," Mat was addressing her as if she were the only one in t he room, "I never said-"
"But you were thinking it!" She shook, "Well I'm not! I'm… I'm nothing like her! She was a horrible mother! I'm a good mother I-"
"Shut up!" Jim glared at her angrily, "I don't want you to talk you little-!"
"Hey!" Voight yelled, "I don't want to hear you talk to your wife like that! Now until we get this all figured out, "You two are to wait in the integration rooms and not allowed to see your daughter!"
"My lawyer will have this office drowning in so much paper work not even your Daddy will be able to fix it!" He snarled in Antonio's direction, "How is your Daddy anyways? Tell him I say hi. He'll remember me."
