"Zosia!" Michael called out her name as he nudged her side. Zosia moved her lips, and tried to open her eyes, and placed her fingers on her forehead.
"Okay, let's get you… up…" Michael said as he tried to get her to sit up. He got a piece of clean gauze and placed it on the cut to stop the bleeding.
"I'd suture it for you here, but you're going to need some anaesthetic for that…" Michael said as he pressed on it. Zosia was still a bit light-headed, but to make sure no serious damage was done, Michael had to ask, "Zosia, do you know who I am?"
"Michael…" Zosia uttered slowly.
"Good… now keep your finger on the bleed… that's it…" he said as he tried to pick her up from the floor. He could see no wheelchair around. He had no choice but to take her up to the ward and suture her forehead in his office to avoid any questions and gossip.
…
He walked up to the ward and entered from the back and not from the front to avoid attention. He made sure, no one could notice, and quickly walked with Zosia in his arms, into his office and closed the door. He placed her on the sofa, put her feet up and told her to keep holding the bleed, while he could rush to the meds cupboard and get some anaesthetic. Luckily, the night was getting closer, and the ward was quieter at that time of day.
He rushed back to his office, with everything he needed to suture Zosia's forehead. He closed the door behind him and locked it. Fortunately Zosia was coming back to reality, she managed to open her eyes fully.
"You know, I didn't mean for this to happen… but you gave me no choice…" Michael said slowly, as he got to the end of the procedure.
"Of course I am giving you a choice… to be happy… to give you what you want…" Zosia said as she looked him in the eye. Michael was up to the part where he had to cut the thread off, "Now this is going to hurt a bit…" he said slowly. Zosia gave no response to the pain.
"What I want is my life with my wife and family… I love Jac, Zosia…" he tried to explain, slowly, without making things anymore worse.
"But what does she have that I don't?" Zosia pleaded.
"Everything! ...I know I messed up things with my first wife, but she is different… I love her… and I am not going to risk losing my family over your stupid games…" Michael explained as he stood up and leaned against his desk.
"But… what about my assessment?!" Zosia yelled.
"Your assessment?! What? You think that if you sleep with me, I'll pass you? Do you realise how pathetic that sounds?!" Michael could not believe why Zosia was leading him on.
"But it's not just that… it's about us…" Zosia tried to persuade him, as she stood up and walked towards him.
"Zosia, there is no us… just get that into your head!" Michael raised a bit her voice as he pushed her hands away. The conversation was interrupted by a knock at the door.
"Just wait here…" Michael whispered, as he unlocked the door and opened it, to see it was Jac.
"Hey honey… is everything alright?" Michael tried to sound sweet, as he closed the door behind him.
Zosia could see it was Jac so she got an idea…
"Yeah of course… I brought you a coffee… and I thought we could… have a cuddle on your sofa… I'm finished on Darwin anyway so…" Jac smiled, as she stroked his arm.
"Yeah about that… I'm a bit busy…" Michael tried not to let her in.
"Busy? Why? The patients are all asleep… and I assume paperwork can wait… besides it's almost time to go home… so are you going to let me in or not?" Jac said as she tried to step forward to step inside. But Michael blocked her way.
"Uh no! I mean… can't you wait for me at the canteen.. downstairs?" Michael tried to get rid of her.
"Let's just cut to the chase… what are you hiding in there?!" Jac said as her smile faded and got horrible thoughts in her head again.
"Uh… it's… a surprise… for you… that's why you can't see it…" Michael uttered as he still blocked the door.
"Hah, I can tell when you're lying… now move…" Jac didn't buy it. But Michael tried not to, "Jac wait.."
"I said move!" Jac said as she walked passed him and walked inside, to see enough before her eyes to get the wrong end of the stick. She could see Zosia on the sofa, with no top on and just her bra. Jac stood there, stunned and then turned around at Michael.
"You're pathetic!" Jac told him, as she rushed out of his office, and down the ward, heading to the doors.
"Jac wait!" Michael yelled as he rushed after her, furious at Zosia but couldn't care less. He just left her in his office.
Jac walked outside the ward, and headed to the lifts, but Michael took hold of her arm.
"No, we are going to talk about this… you have to let me explain…" Michael told her, as he moved her towards the locker room. Jac without saying a word, moved inside, to listen to what he had to say.
To be continued...
Coming up next: Jac hears what Michael has to say, but will she believe him? Is Zosia going to win?
