Here's the next chapter dears! Sorry it is a bit shorter but I figured this is better than waiting weeks for a longer one :p And I'm sorry about the grammatical errors in the last few chapters. My co-writer and I are still getting used to each other and our different styles. This chapter should be good though! As always thank you so much for reading. If want please go check out our playlist and our tumblr page. Again thank you all so much and enjoy this chapter of The Oddity Tales :)
"So he's invisible," the Doctor sighed exasperated, running his hands through his wild hair as he lead the group back into Vincent's home. He flopped down into a wooden chair in the living room, Amy going to sit across from him. Lizzie stood by Vincent for a moment watching the Timelord as he let his head fall back in thought. She smiled softly at him, taking a few steps forward until she was right behind him. Just close enough so she could rub her hands through his hair and down his neck. Lizzie smirked as he stiffened at her touch but immediately relaxed after. "Oh," he sighed, melting into her hands. "That's feels...really good actually."
"I'm a pro at it," Lizzie gloated, feeling a bit proud of herself. "Found out about it when Amy used to come home really stressed from work. It would help her relax immediately."
"It's true," Amy agreed as she leaned forward resting her head in her hand. "You never know how stressful being Kiss-O-Gram can be."
"Actually…" the Doctor muttered leaning into Lizzie hands a little more before his eyes snapped open as he jumped out of his seat. "That-" he pointed a finger at Amy. "Is not the point right now." He snapped his body around so he was fully facing Lizzie, making sure they made eye contact."That thing is invisible!"
Lizzie sighed, crossing her arms over her chest and looking toward the ground in thought. "Sorry right, no one could see it…no one-" the blonde slowly turned her frame towards to the door to where the ginger artist was standing. "But Vincent."
Vincent became alert as soon as Lizzie called his name. He gave her a smile as he picked up the painting closest to him. "I can show you what he looked like!" He exclaimed, slamming a beautifully painted work of what appeared to be flowers onto a nearby desk and smearing a new coat of blank white paint over it.
"No,no,no,no-" the Doctor yelled running over to Vincent in hopes of catching him before it was too late, but it was done. The painting was ruined. "No."
"Vincent!" Lizzie chastised, throwing her hands in the air as she went to sit next to Amy who covered her mouth in shock at what the artist had just done.
"What?" Vincent asked, looking around as if he had done absolutely nothing wrong.
"It's just that-" the Doctor started, running one hand through his hair as the other referenced the ruined work. "T-That was quite good."
"It was brilliant!" Lizzie called from across the room, hanging her head in her hands as Amy rubbed her back. "You can't just do-" she immediately stopped complaining however once the Doctor gave her a shushing motion and Amy made a face at her. She had to be careful of revealing too much she supposed.
"That's very kind of you to say," Vincent responded, giving Lizzie a small smile of gratitude. "But really it was beyond any hope. It had been sitting here for months! It's better off. This way it can help all of us." He waited until he received a nod from the blonde to continue his work.
"Off you go then," the Doctor murmured, giving his own signal for Vincent to continue as he wandered back over to the girls. The trio watched Vincent for a few moments, his hand quickly moving his pencil in a flurry of detailed strokes. They watched intently, following Vincent's every move. At some point the Doctor rose up to wander, attempting to pull Lizzie with him but she grunted in resistance. The way he pulled her arm sent shock through her shoulder and down her spine. When the creature threw her she must have landed harder than she thought.
"Hey, you alright?" Amy muttered concerned, moving closer to her friend as she struggled back down to a comfortable position.
"Yeah, fine," Lizzie grunted, keeping her voice low so she wouldn't distract Vincent. "That thing just tossed me really hard. I think I landed on my back funny."
At that, the Doctor immediately knelt before her. He forced her chin down as he inconspicuously pulled out his sonic screwdriver, hastily scanning her face and body. "Why didn't you tell me when we got in?" he chastised, eyes narrow in concern.
Lizzie would have rolled her eyes if she wasn't trying to blink the green dots out of her them. "We've been a bit busy," she stated, ignoring the face he made at her and Amy's chuckle. "And it only started hurting when my back or arm twisted the wrong way. It's not a big deal."
"It, may not be a big deal," the Doctor emphasized, moving around her urgently so he could scan her back. "But you are. If you or Amy ever get hurt you tell me. No, nothing-" He paused, placing his hand on Lizzie's cheek and lifting her head back so she would look at him. The way he stared so intensely made Lizzie stiffen and cheeks flush all at the same time. This wasn't her goofy carefree Doctor who would always make her laugh. This was the side of the Doctor who turned into her dorky, bowtied knight in shining armor. And she loved it. "Understand?" he continued, snapping her out of her daze. "No hiding things for the sake of what we're doing, alright?"
"A-Alright," Lizzie stuttered, attempting to compose herself as he caressed her cheek before flipping open the screwdriver. "Only if you promise to stop barging into our rooms some mornings, slamming pots and pans together to wake us up."
"Oh please!" Amy groaned in agreement, crossing her arms over her chest. "I know you Timelords don't sleep as much as we do, but please don't take your energy out on us when we're getting our beauty rest."
"Hey that's fun!" He defended. "...And I get bored. You humans sleep too long. I don't know how you do it." The Doctor turned to looking at the sonic screwdriver, examining it quickly before shutting it and revealing its results. "Well nothing's broken or cracked," he sighed in relief. "But-" he paused brandishing his finger for effect. "You have some serious bruises all over your back. We'll have to run back to the Tardis to fetch you some-"
"Finished!"
At Vincent's exclamation the Doctor was cut off, making all three of the time travelers turn towards the artist. The Doctor walked quickly over, holding out a hand so the girls would stay in their seats. "Okay," he sighed, face going grim as he stared at Vincent's new creation making Lizzie tense up and lean into Amy. Vincent looked up at the Doctor, anxiously awaiting a response. After taking a deep breath and muttering another okay, the Doctor cleared his throat and took Vincent's drawing from his hands.
"Right," he said, preparing to go into a list of instructions. He turned his gaze to where the girls were sitting. "Amy, make sure Mr. VanGogh is comfortable. Don't let any invisible monsters through the front door. Elizabeth-"
Amy's posture of attention soon turned to anger as her mouth dropped open in shock. She made eye contact with Lizzie before they nodded in agreement. The red head quickly stood up and huffed towards the Doctor. "It could be outside!" she told him, tugging him back as he walked away before bringing her voice to a whisper. "Waiting!"
Lizzie couldn't help but smirk. They both knew instantly as the Doctor started listing off instructions he was going to leave to find the creature. He didn't even have to say anything at this point, the girls just knew.
"Well," the Doctor said calmly, attempting to ease her a bit. "Don't worry I'll risk it," a small smile grew on his face. "What's the worst that could happen?"
"You could get torn into pieces by a monster you can't see." Amy said quickly, eyes wide in concern.
"Or get completely and utterly lost unable to find your way back here and then the creature finds you and then you end up torn into pieces." Lizzie added from her spot across the room, raising her brows as if to say 'you know it's true.'
"I," the Doctor proclaimed confidently, brushing the lapels of his tweed jacket. "Don't get lost."
"You get lost in the Tardis almost once a day, not to mention all the wrong places you have taken us by accident and-"
"Okay, okay, shhhhh!" The Doctor chided her, giving her a small glare. His eyes soon lighted however at her eye roll and wink. "Alright yes back on topic, those things could happen but," he held out his arms to Lizzie, a large grin taking over his face. "Not with my gaurd!"
"Excuse me?" the blonde asked lightly, brows frowning against her forehead.
"Exactly!" Amy exclaimed, hitting the Timelord in the side. "What do you mean guard?"
"Exactly what it sounds like," the Doctor confirmed, hastily rubbing at the spot that Amy had hit. "That was rude by the way, but yes. Lizzie is coming with me to be my guard."
Amy shook her head, crossing her arms so she wouldn't be tempted to smack the Timelord again. "You're really going to take the girl who has bruises up and down her back to be your guard? That's insane! Take me instead, I can do it."
"No Amy I need to take Lizzie back to the Ta-" the Doctor stopped himself, quickly thinking of another word to be a code for his ship. "Ta-Tavern, the tavern. The one painted blue near the edge of town." Lizzie smiled as his voice dove into a high pitch, trying to make sure the girls understood what he was talking about. "There is some medicine I left there that could help with her pain. Besides, she can keep an eye out and shout at me from in there if anything goes wrong."
"Oh and you expect that to be safer for her? And you're just going to leave us here like a bunch of old rocks?" Amy exasperated.
"Hey you two-" Lizzie tried to speak, in fear of the argument she could sense was brewing. But she was ignored, the Doctor cutting her off.
"Yes I do think that's safer for her! She's injured and she needs cared for. And I'm not leaving you Amelia. The creature is not going to come back here, I promise. I'm sure we scared it off. As soon as I find it and see what it is I'll be back before you know it!"
"How do you know that?"
"Hey-" Lizzie tried to interject again, becoming annoyed she was having no say in this, but again she was cut off.
"I believe Amy is right." Vincent interjected, standing up from his chair. "Doctor, I do not think you see how dangerous this demon is. It has been slaughtering people for weeks. No one can get away from it. If what you say is true and Elizabeth is injured," the artist came up behind her and delicately placed his hand on her shoulder. "I believe she should stay with me."
As Lizzie turned up to give Vincent a small smile, gently placing her hand on top of his, she saw the Doctor tense out of the corner of her eye. His hands clench and unclench in fists at his sides as he tried to remain calm, bottom lip curling up. "Thank for your input Vincent," he grimaced slightly, quickly walking over to the pair. "But she's coming with me!" In a haste the Doctor clutched Lizzie's hand, yanking her out of her seat to standing. He pulled so hard the it sent an immense shock wave through the young woman's body, causing her to let out a loud shriek.
"Lizzie!" Amy exclaimed, moving over to hold friend before the Doctor even realized what had happened.
"O-Oh…" he gasped, eyes growing wide in shock of what he had just done. His hands quickly went to Lizzie's shoulder as he bent down to her level. "Lizzie, I'm so sorry, I completely forgot."
Lizzie's head snapped up so she could meet his eyes with hers that were misty from pain. "You forgot what you we're just fighting about?" she seethed, ushering Amy over a few feet with a nod that she was okay. "Really?"
Lizzie couldn't help but feel a small sense of revenge as the Doctor hung his head, rubbing the back of his neck as he looked at the floor. She left out an aggravated huff, massaging the bridge of her nose before taking the painting out of the Doctors hands and placing it on the ground. "I need to talk to you," she demanded, narrowing her eyes sternly. "Alone."
Before anyone could mutter a word in reply, Lizzie stormed out of the house to the garden where they were previously. She shivered as the cold night air hit her skin, the wind slowly blowing the loose hairs that were framing her face. She crossed her arms around her frame only turning around when she heard a small scuffle. She was not surprised when she saw the Doctor following after her and stopping only to turn and shut the door behind him. Lizzie watched as he kept his head low, staring at his shoes as he scratched the back of his head.
"Okay…" she breathed deeply, trying to prevent her anger bubbling up and exploding. "First things first, you DO NOT decide what I should and should not do. I KNOW when I am hurt and I know when I should get help and-AH!" Lizzie put her finger on the Doctor's lips as he opened his mouth to speak. His eyes went cross eyed, focusing on her finger as his lips curled inwards. "Don't interrupt. You don't have any right to force me to go somewhere if I don't want to go. Just because you are being irrational does not give you the right to literally push me around, make decisions for me without my consent, and tell me what I can and cannot do."
As she finished, Lizzie felt a weight fly off of her shoulders. A good rant always helps calm a person down. She was glad the Doctor had the decency to look ashamed, but a part of her also felt a tiny bit guilty. She knew the Doctor was only trying to keep her safe, but this was not the way to go about it. Lizzie had grown a lot in her travels and if there was one thing she had learned it was not to let people make choices for her.
A cough snapped her out of her train of thought as she watched the Doctor's eyes move down to her finger that was still covering his lips. Lizzie closed her eyes, taking a deep breath before saying sorry and removing the appendage. She took a few steps back, nodding at him to continue.
"I'm sorry." The Doctor started quickly, voice sincere. "I didn't mean for it to be as if I was controlling you. I feel…protective of you."
"And I understand that," Lizzie agreed. "But there is a line to being protective and being completely idiotic! I understood what you were trying to do but I'm not in the shape to try and watch out for you when it's something I can't see. Why not just take Amy? You know she was just going to run off and follow you anyway."
The Doctor paused a moment eyes going wide in an attempt to gather his thoughts. He casually coughed into his fist as he said, "W-Well obviously because you're injured and you need medicine from the Tardis. Don't deny me that! And you know," he eyes began to shift a little bit as his nerves acted up. "...You're my companion. I brought you here so...I should feel protective of you...as ya know a friend…m-my mate even!" he ended with a chuckle.
"Oh."
Lizzie clutched her arms a little tighter but kept her eyes steady on the Doctor. It was a bit of a blow, she would admit that. Every girl knew the feeling at least once. The magnificent man that you couldn't deny your feelings for any longer only referring to you as his friend...no his mate...it would make any girl's heart sink.
The Doctor studied her for a moment, sensing something in her straight laced stare that sent him into an alarm, "No! I didn't mean-" he began, shaking his hands in front of his body. "I meant-well-"
Lizzie closed her eyes and hung her head, trying to force herself to laugh at his foolishness so maybe she could brush it off. She couldn't let him she her like this. Not now. It was not the right time. Her feelings about something that may or may not happen was not supposed to be the evenings priority. Just when Lizzie was about to tease the Doctor in order to lighten the mood and go back to the previous conversation she heard him stop stammering. Not even a second later there was a large, warm hand on her cheek that was lifting her face up to look into two green spheres.
"I care about you Elizabeth," he told her tenderly, making sure she understood every word coming for his lips. They were so close Lizzie couldn't help but stare at their movement. "I care about you a lot and I want to make sure that you're safe. That is why I acted the way I did in there and I am truly sorry. I'm sorry for hurting you and I'm sorry for not letting you get a say in what happens to you. That wasn't right. Forgive me?"
As he spoke Lizzie felt a warm tingling pool begin to form in her chest and expanded through her body, reaching to the tips of her fingers and toes. She let out a short airy laugh, releasing the overwhelming feeling in her heart before muttering, "Well...when you put it like that…"
Before she could even finish the Doctor let out a large laugh pulling her to him and burying his face in her hair. Lizzie grinned, returning the embrace with all she could. However she had to stop once the Doctor started to squeeze her, forcing her to grimace in pain. At the sound he immediately pulled back, uttering multiple 'sorrys.'
"Your injuries..." He muttered to himself, running his hands up and down her arms in comfort before he laced his fingers with hers. "You need medicine. Come on." He gently began to pull her along until he realized her hand was no longer there. He looked down at his bare fingers before turning back to his blonde companion.
"I'll stay here," she told him in a definite tone. "It doesn't make sense for me to go with you. Bring the medicine back here."
"But…you need it. Soon!" He looked back at the door where the light was shining through from the house. He face began to break into a bit of a pout which Lizzie couldn't deny was extremely adorable.
"I'll be fine until you get back," she compromised. "I'll stay here, rest, drink some of tea, watch over Vincent." Lizzie rose a brow when she saw the the Doctor's face scrunch at the mention of the artists name.
"Yes but, I would feel better if you were with me" He paused, watching Lizzie's blank stare. "-because then I know you are safe." He added hastily.
"I'm safer here," She motioned with her head back to the house. "You said yourself, you're sure we scared it off. And someone needs to stay and watch out for Vincent. Amy's not going to."
"Of course she will! I have every-"
Lizzie cut him off with a knowing chuckle. "Doctor. It's Amy. You know I'm right. She's not going to stay put if she thinks you're in danger. Not even if you tell her to."
The Timelord sighed, shaking his head with a slight smile. "Yeah," he acknowledge in agreement before catching her eye. "But you've always done the same."
"Well I guess that's why there's only two of us," she smiled, not noticing the Doctor's face grow dark at the mention of 'only two'. "We can take turn running after you when you start acting like an idiot."
"Now hold on-!" the Doctor began to protest before Lizzie walked up to him, placing a hand on his chest. She looked up at him with a tender grin, loving the feeling of his hearts underneath her fingertips.
"An idiot-" she added on, "That we both care about very much."
The two stood there for a moment in silence, letting their conversation sink in before Lizzie continued. "Let Amy go," she insisted. "I'll stay here and watch over Vincent. You two can give me the medicine when you get back."
The Doctor took in a breath looking at her to confirm her decision. "Are you sure?" he asked.
"Vincent is the only one of us who can see that thing," she reminded him. "I'm sure I'm in the safest place I could be."
The Doctor sucked in his lip, looking as if he was debating with himself for a moment before giving a short groan and nodding his head. "Okay, but you promise you'll sit down and rest? No wandering around, no going outside, just stay and sit down on a chair or something, the bed-no!" His eyes widened in alarm as he shook his head. "No no no no, don't go on the bed, just sit on the…chair."
"Oooookay," Lizzie elongated with a laugh, a playful look in her eye underneath her questioning brow.
He gave her a quick nod, turning on his heel to walk away before he bounded back. "Oh! And if Vincent asks you to do something, just say no, you need rest. Stay in that chair. Rest is good. The chair is good." He pointed his finger at her.
"Rest," she agreed, slapping his finger away from her face. "Got it."
"Good." The Doctor nodded. Lizzie waited for him to walk away but he just still stood there, swinging his arms as he rocked back on his feet awkwardly. "Okay...well then…" he muttered as if contemplating something in his head. Lizzie was about to ask what he was thinking when he suddenly bent down, giving her a light kiss on the cheek. It was quick. So quick Lizzie was barely even able to process what had happen before the Doctor quickly blathered out a "See you soon!" and awkwardly walked/jogged away.
She watched his back until he was no longer in sight, not very sure whether it was good or bad that he didn't turn around. At least he wasn't able to see the gigantic grin that was covering her face and the blush that overtook the cheek he had just kissed.
"Lizzie?"
The blonde's grin quickly dropped as she turned to see Amy opening the door.
"Where's the Doctor?" She asked stepping out.
"He went back to the Tardis." Lizzie explained rapidly, trying not to touch the spot that was still tingling on her cheek. She began to pick at her hands behind her back as Amy gave her a questioning stare.
"Why are you red?" she asked slyly, crossing her arms over her chest.
"...It's cold outside."
Review maybe? :)
