It was Thanksgiving weekend. It was also the unofficial Avengers Family Reunion. Ever since Mark had moved out over a decade ago, every year after that had been dedicated to bringing the kids home at least once a year where they'd hang out for the long weekend.
This year, the adults had decided on taking everyone to Central Park just to hang out. Most of the kids had been okay with this, and so off they went on a frosty November day. The park was rather busy but it was also rather huge, so no one really minded. The hardest part was getting them all there at the same time: they ended up taking Tony and Pepper's extremely stretched limo that appeared to be the only vehicle that could fit them all besides a bus.
They arrived quite a while later ("Stupid New York City traffic," Happy grumbled) and climbed out of the car on both sides. It was a rather cloudy day and most of the trees had lost most - if not all - of their leaves. The branches swayed in the breeze as horns honked and tires squealed in the background.
Tony, Pepper, Clint, Natasha, Steve and his wife, Thor, Jane, Bruce, Betty, Happy, Mark, Nikki, and their son Josh found park benches or stairs to sit on and watch as their children interacted on the snowy grass. Lindy, Alaina, Jim, Brianna, James, and Thomas were scattered around the place. It was hard to keep track of everyone.
Jim and Alaina had taken to chasing each other around various statues, giggling like maniacs. Lindy was sulking against a tree rather far away, deep in thought. She had been having marriage problems lately but refused to talk about them with anyone. Brianna appeared to be practicing choreography near a pile of leaves a little ways away from Mark and his wife, who were watching their son draw pictures in the ground with a stick. Thomas was trying to get James to jump in the pile of leaves to scare Brianna but the autistic teen only whipped his head from side to side, which Thomas took to meaning, "No."
"Aw, come on, Jamie!" He pleaded. "Watch. Like this!" He jumped up and stomped on the leaves, scattering them in a million different directions and sending them straight into Brianna's face, who jumped but didn't scream.
She whirled around. "I was just about to nail that pirouette!" She looked angry. Not She-Hulk angry, but angry all the same.
"Uh oh," said Thomas, smirking, "Better run for our lives!" He grabbed James' hand and took off.
Brianna huffed. "I'm too old for this," she muttered. She smiled anyway. "I'm gonna get you, you little buggers!" She chased after them but they already had a good head start and she lost sight of them quickly, spinning around. They'd disappeared. "Where'd you go?" What had originated as a game of tag, quickly turned into hide and seek and she set off on the trek to find them.
Behind a statue, Thomas tried to stifle his laughter as his cousin searched for him in the completely wrong direction. "She'll never find us, right Jamie?" He turned, but James wasn't there. "Jamie?!" He continued the turning motion and spotted his cousin walking and hopping and skipping away. "Hey! Wait up!" Thomas hopped down from statue with ease just in time to see James approached by a couple of boys, maybe a year or two older than him. They were probably around Brianna's age, if Thomas had to guess.
Even from afar, he could see their leers and smirks as they began to taunt Captain America's son. Obviously these guys had no idea who they were messing with. Puffing up his chest, Thomas ran over, not noticing that he was going faster than any Midgardian could ever go, even Uncle Steve. He appeared between James and his tormentors, who blinked surprise.
James didn't appear to have any idea what was going on, but Thomas knew better. James was incredibly aware of what went on around him, hyper aware you might say; he just didn't look like it.
"Leave him alone!" Thomas shouted, a fierce sense of loyalty and protectiveness coming over him.
The two boys, almost men, sneered. "We're not doing anything wrong, just having a one-sided conversation with a wall."
Thomas' nostrils flared. The air crackled with electricity. No one seemed to notice.
James did.
"He is not a wall," Thomas defended, glaring.
The shorter of the bullies laughed. It was awful. "Try telling that to him. See what he says."
Thomas stood up straighter. "He doesn't have to talk to communicate."
The taller one snorted and leaned down to Thomas' height. "He's too retarded to communicate."
Thunder boomed in the distance.
"You take that back!" Thomas snarled, clenching his fists.
"Or-?"
"Found you!" Brianna arrived, slightly out of breath. She took in the situation within seconds "What's going on here?"
The men looked her up and down, smirking. "Who are you?" The shorter one asked.
"That depends," she answered vaguely. "What's going on here?"
Thomas spoke up. "They were insulting James!"
Brianna narrowed her eyes and turned on the tormentors. "What are your names?"
"I'm Earl and this is Merlin," said the shorter one, jutting his thumb at both of them. It was clear from their expressions that they thought they were getting laid tonight. Oh she would lay them down alright; in their graves.
"I'm-" She started but was interrupted by the arrival of Lindy.
"Is there a problem?" Lindy was twenty-eight and therefore considered an adult in everyone's eyes - except Earl and Merlin, apparently.
"Nope!" Merlin claimed innocently. "Just talkin'."
"'Just talking' my ass!" Thomas yelled. "They were making fun of James!"
Lindy stepped closer to her autistic cousin and placed a hand on his shoulder. James jerked but otherwise didn't protest, plugging his ears at all the yelling. Lindy stood up tall (which wasn't very tall, probably only about five foot seven - so average) and said in her best mature voice, "Were you picking on my cousin?"
"Pfft! Of course not!" Earl claimed. "We were just talking! You guys get so offended so easily! Jamie's not offended."
"Don't call him that!" Thomas stepped forward but was held back by Brianna. "You have no idea what he's thinking! You can't pretend to know anything!"
Storm clouds rolled in from out of nowhere.
Brianna's skin began to take on a hint of green.
Jim and Alaina intervened. "Thomas, is that you? What are you doing? Odin could get really mad at you if you use your-" Alaina stopped mid-sentence and saw Brianna looking severely agitated. The blonde shared a look with her boyfriend and he nodded. She turned to Earl and Merlin (who seemed to think they had better chances of getting laid now) and placed her hands on her hips. "What did you do?"
"Nothing!" They claimed, realizing for the first time that they were outnumbered. They began to back up.
Jim followed. "What. Did. You. Do?" He was scarily calm. He wasn't above reverting to his vigilante-type ways.
Earl laughed nervously. "Nothing! We swear!"
Thomas snarled again. "For the last time: they called James a retard!"
"Did he now?" Everyone turned to face Mark, who had just arrived after seeing all of his cousins and his sister looking rather murderous.
Earl and Merlin decided they were done for. "We didn't even do anything! Shove off!" Earl shoved Jim backward and suddenly it was chaos. Jim fell into Brianna and knocked her over. The two of them remained there, suddenly entirely focused on trying not to let her turn green. With Brianna on the ground, Thomas was free to move if he wanted and he surged forward. Merlin grabbed Alaina's wrist but she flipped him over her head and slammed him into the ground. Lindy lunged for Earl while Mark attempted to pull both girls off their opponents. Meanwhile everyone was shouting and James was groaning and rocking back and forth, covering his ears as tightly as he could.
"ENOUGH!"
Lightning flashed and thunder rolled, yet Thomas' voice boomed throughout all of Central Park, deep and clear. No one dared move. Even Brianna had frozen, too shocked to transform. Thomas stood his ground, decked in his armour and accompanied by his sword, Aere, looking menacingly at the two bullies, who were now cowering.
"I am Prince Vidar, Heir to the throne of Asgard, Son of Thor, Son of Odin. You-"
He didn't get any farther than that before Earl and Merlin scurried away with their tails between their legs.
James whined and keeled over, rocking on the ground. Mark immediately fell to his knees next to him and began patting his back. Jim helped Brianna to her feet and Alaina and Lindy dusted themselves off. James' whine seemed to hit something in Vidar and in less than ten seconds, the clouds had rolled away and the rain stopped, revealing Thomas drenched in his normal clothes, his sword absent. His eyes rolled and he fainted, only to be caught by Alaina who set him down gently.
"Lindy! Find Thor and Jane!"
Lindy nodded and set off at a run. She could already hear all of the parents calling their names frantically, having seen the storm and known it was Thomas.
Alaina hugged her youngest cousin to her chest. "You did it, Tommy. It's okay. You did it. We're fine. We're okay. You did it." She kissed the top of his head. "Thank you."
A/N. So that was pretty tense but rather touching, don't you think? :) Next time, Jaina's wedding! Stay tuned :D
