A/N: Okay, two things that don't really relate, but are wicked important. One- AGE OF ULTRON CAME OUT YESTERDAY! I'm so excited. I haven't seen it yet, but we are going to see it tomorrow. No spoilers, please. Two- I have started watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. again (the first time we (me and my sister) kind of lost interest, I don't know why, looking back on it, but I digress) and while watching it, I was thinking about maybe making a fic about the team meeting Mandy. It will be a short one, but if that sounds good to people, I'd be on the lookout for it. It probably won't start until I finished this story, though.
Chapter 35
Mandy stared at herself in the mirror, running her hands over the shiny fabric of her dress. It was the same color blue of her eyes and matched exactly with Daddy's tie. She got it the day when Pepper and Natasha had gone with her to a dress shop, right before going with Abigail to pick out her dress.
"Hey beautiful," Daddy leaned against the door frame. Mandy gasped and glanced at the bathroom.
"You can't be in here!" Mandy said, darting forward and pressing against his arm. He didn't budge, even when Mandy glanced hurriedly at the bathroom again. "Don't come out Abigail!"
"Okay," Abigail called from the bathroom, her voice full of humor. Mandy was pretty sure that she was laughing at her, but she didn't care. A little luck never hurt anyone.
"What do you want?" Mandy asked, putting her hands on her hips. Her dad smiled down at her.
"I just wanted to see you," He said, touching her hair, which Natasha hadn't gotten to yet. "You look really pretty."
"Liar," Mandy guessed. "You just wanted to sneak a peek of Abigail." She glanced around him into the hallway. "Where did Clint go?"
"I distracted him with Bruce," Daddy admitted. Mandy huffed and looked up at him. He smiled.
"Aren't you supposed to be nice to me?" He asked. "I'm getting married today, baby."
"Congratulations," Mandy said. She meant for it to be sarcastic, but it came out more sincere, because she really was happy that Daddy was getting married to Abigail today. They made each other happy, and that was all that mattered.
And the fact that Abigail didn't want to put her up for adoption.
"You look very handsome," Mandy added, smoothing her hands down his suit. "But that does not mean you can be sneaky. You must be patient!" She wagged her finger at him and he smiled again. Well, not really again. He had been smiling all day long. It's just that his smile brightened whenever he found something funny.
"Okay," Daddy hugged her. "Love you."
"Love you too," Mandy hugged him back. "Now leave!"
Phil shifted his tie, ignoring the smile on Mandy's face, because if he looked at Mandy's smile, and saw how happy she was, he was going to break down. And he was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. They did not start crying until at least the middle of the ceremony.
Phil pulled on his cuffs and he heard Tony laugh from the audience.
"Not as easy as it looks to sit still, is it?" He asked. Steve shushed him hurriedly, their own hands clasped together. Phil ignored him, though he did feel slightly bad about smirking at Tony during their ceremony, because he was right. It was hard to sit still.
Not because he was nervous, no. Or at least not in the sense that he was unsure of whether he wanted to do this. He had never been so sure of anything since adopting Mandy. He loved Abigail, and more importantly, Mandy loved Abigail.
It was just that he wanted today to be the best day it could be for Abigail. He wanted to make sure he looked perfect, that he did everything correctly. It was a feeling that he hadn't felt since they had first gotten Mandy. As a S.H.I.E.L.D agent, and even a person, he had always been self-assured. He had never struggled to find the correct words. But he wanted to make sure he said exactly the right thing today.
Mandy gasped by his side and Phil looked up hurriedly.
And then he caught sight of Abigail, and it didn't matter if he knew the correct words to say, because when their eyes connected they communicated everything that they needed the other to know.
Abigail stared up at the stage, watching in amusement as Clint lifted Mandy onto it. When Mandy was on Clint handed up a glass full of sparkling grape juice, which Mandy held daintily. Clint returned to his seat, sitting down beside Abigail's sister, Clarissa, who still looked a little shell shocked.
Abigail understood. Sometimes she still couldn't believe that she knew, and called, all the Avengers by their first name. Or that the Avengers were at her wedding, and most of them had already made speeches for her. Or that she was marrying the wonderful man who captained the Avengers.
"Hi," Mandy giggled into the microphone. She had grown increasingly giddy throughout the day, drunk on happiness for her father. "I'm Phil's daughter, for those of you who don't know," Mandy paused to wave at her father, who waved back. "And I'm also Abigail's too." Mandy's blue eyes found Abigail's in the crowd and held them. "Abigail was my teacher last year. And it was during second period, language arts, when I realized that she would be a perfect match for my father. He has a bit of bad judgement, so I knew I had to help him, by getting my amazing teacher to go out on a date with him." Mandy sighed here, dramatically. "It wasn't easy. And I nearly got grounded. But I'm glad I did set them up, because I learned, while they were dating, that Abigail was not only a great teacher, but a great person. She's exactly what my dad needed. She's kind, a good cook, and, most importantly, she loves my father. And, you know, she loves me, which is a plus." Mandy giggled. "And I was really, really glad that she was a good person, because that's what my father deserves. He's probably the kindest, most loving, awesome person in the world. He saved me, when I thought I would never be saved. I don't care if he's technically not a part of the Avengers, he's my superhero, and he always will be."
Phil made a choked noise and Abigail tightened her hand around his. She wasn't going to pretend that she wasn't feeling a little choked up too. Or that there wasn't tears running down her face.
"So if he gets hurt, I will find who hurt him. And they will be in big trouble," Mandy said. It was the kind of thing that seemed like an empty threat, coming from a little girl in a bright blue dress, but Mandy's eyes scorched seriously as she stared at Abigail. "And so, because I like you, take good care of him, Mom."
The tears came quicker down Abigail's cheeks than she ever thought they would, and she beckoned to Mandy. Mandy jumped down and ran to them, allowing herself to be enveloped in their arms.
"I was supposed to have everyone clink their glasses to that," Mandy said, her voice choked as she stumbled over her own tears. Abigail laughed, hugging her tighter, and wondered how she ever got so lucky.
