Chapter Thirty-Six

*Masen's POV*

I smiled as I looked down at my hand. It was intertwined with Grace's and they looked like they fit perfectly together. It was a nice feeling to have someone in my life like this.

We were currently heading to our ninth period classes, walking up the halls while others stared at us. It was such a high school thing, everyone stares at the couple holding hands and shows any sign of PDA. This is one of the reasons why I couldn't wait to get out. I'd have a forever of high schools, colleges, and jobs I can mess around with. Just this time in high school, it counts. My parents want us to do good now, even though we don't need to try because of our good memories. High school is not a challenge at all for a supernatural being. It's a walk in the park. In fact, I don't even think I really want to go to high school again.

"So, are you still up for that date tomorrow?" I asked my girlfriend. "It's gonna be pretty awesome. I planned something very romantic, just saying."

"Aw you're cute." Grace chuckled, but I could tell instantly something was bothering her. I watched closely as she bit her bottom lip and looked at me with concern, "I really want to go, but I don't think it's a good idea..."

"Why not?"

"It's just...My mom doesn't know yet, about us that is, and she's going to be home all weekend...I'm never going to get this past her. She's gonna want to hang out with me, and I'd love to, but I don't know how much more I can hide you from her..." Grace confessed.

"You never told her?" I asked slowly, trying to see the reasoning behind this. "Are you ashamed of me or something?"

"No, it's not you...Well it is you, it's just what you are-"

"I'm lost."

"You know this. My mom hates vampires, everything about them. Especially what they've done to my family."

"But your boyfriend, best friend, and all of their family are vampires or part vampires...You've been hanging out with a hybrid and a mythical creature for the past few months, yet you still haven't told her. Anything?"

"Well she's never home. You'd do the same if you knew my mother," Grace remarked, frowning at me.

"Well, I don't because I've only met your mother twice, and both times were awkward and unfortunate situations."

"Look, if I introduce you as my boyfriend, she's going to want to know everything about you. Everything. She's pretty chill, and once she gets to know you she would be fine. Everything would be fine until she senses you're a vampire. She can tell when someone lies, it's a witch thing. She can tell you aren't human, Masen!," Grace hissed.

"How? She hasn't noticed the first time," I pointed out.

"That's because both times you talked to each other for less than ten minutes. If you kept coming to my house or had dinner with us, she'd find out for sure! Just trust me when I say it isn't safe," Grace warned me.

"Maybe your mother can learn that there are some vampires out there that aren't evil," I mentioned. "Look at my family, we're anything but evil."

"She won't learn! She never will! The only thing that is part vampire that she'll ever love is Robert. The moment she figures out what you are she'll want to kill you," Grace whispered, letting go of my hand. "Look, I have to get to class. Let's talk about this another time."

"Wait, Grace," I begged. "Don't go."

"Masen, I seriously need to get to class. We'll talk about this later," Grace informed me stiffly, marching into her class. I sighed, groaning, as I headed to my own class. Way to go this time, Masen. Just when things were going good.

"What did you do?" I turned around to see Lily, making her way over to me. "Looks like someone pissed off his girlfriend."

"She's not pissed, just a little mad. There's a huge difference," I pointed out, causing Lily to roll her eyes.

"Alright, whatever you say."

"What!? What did I do?!" I cried out. "How can she be that pissed?"

"Well, she freaking is! Masen, she clearly is pissed! How could you miss that!?" Lily scolded at me. "What were you two fighting about?"

"Her mom..."

"Go on..."

"She doesn't want me to officially introduce myself as her boyfriend to her mom. It's because I'm related to vampires or part vampires."

"Oh." Lily responded. "I see. Maybe it is for the best. You know what Grace's said about her mom..."

"I know, but I'm her boyfriend. I introduced her to you guys-"

"We already knew her," Lily pointed out. "And besides that, we don't hate witches with a burning passion. Her mom, she hates vampires with a burning passion. She'll probably skin you alive once she figures out what you are."

"Alright. Look, the point being, I just feel like it wouldn't be right, hiding this behind her mom's back. What's going to happen if Grace doesn't tell her mom months down the line we're still dating? Years even? What's gonna happen if we get married? Huh? We just let Grace abandon her mom forever and let Mrs. Martin deal with another disappearance of a family member? I'm not going to let Grace ruin her family for this."

"Wow. Okay, so you seem a little rational on your end but she's right too. You two need to work it out, together, as a couple. It's the only way you'll get this done," Lily explained to me. "Everything will be fine."

"No, it's not. I don't see how we can even get past this!" I rambled, thinking about all the ways and things I could do to make up with Grace.

"Masen!" Lily then gave me a nice hard slap across the cheek. "Get a freaking hold on yourself! What are you? A love sick twelve year old puppy? It's a little spat, couples have them all the time, this is just your first official one. Chill."

"Okay," I responded, nodding my head slowly as Lily placed both of her hands firmly on my shoulders.

"You can do this," Lily coached me. "It's not a big deal."

"Why did you just smack him?" Renesmee asked slowly, coming over with Aidan.

"Lady trouble my man?" Aidan asked, causing Lily and I to roll each other's eyes.

"That's exactly it, isn't it?" Renesmee questioned, looking at me. "What's this about? Her mom?"

"How do you know?" I accused my sister, narrowing my eyes at her.

"Grace and I are best friends. We know everything," Renesmee replied, smirking. "Look, Masen, just let her show you her side before you jump to conclusions. You don't know all your facts yet."

"You're part vampire, aren't you upset? Seriously? We love her like family, she loves us like family, yet she's hiding us from her mother, her family...And how do you know about her mom?" I ranted, looking at my sister for answers.

"Because, as I said, best friend. Ovaries before brovaries, man. We tell each other everything and I know where she's coming from. Just give her time," Renesmee replied, shuffling her books around. "Just trust the both of us, little brother."

"You should, she's probably right," Lily said, causing Aidan to nod in agreement. "I'm sure there's a good reason as to why she isn't exposing you to her mom just yet. She isn't ready and you should respect those wishes. It doesn't mean she hates you. It just means she loves and wants to protect you."

"Alright...Thanks," I replied softly, sighing as I thought some more about Grace. I just needed to figure out how to work this out with her.

"Now, come on. Let's get to class, I don't want to be late," Renesmee announced, heading in the other direction joyfully. After saying goodbye to the others, my mind would continue to wrack about Grace and her mother.

*Lily's POV*

I groaned as I hung up the phone on Austin. This was the third time this week he's blown me off for something or someone else. Most of the time it was because of basketball. Now that he's considered the school's best player, his ego has...increased. Not in a good way, more like the irritating way. Relationships are just so damn complicated sometimes. I didn't want to be that over barring girlfriend, but it's been like he's actually ignoring me. Like right now, he canceled a date we've moved almost three times and it's on a Friday night!

So, I guess I'll be spending this night alone. I didn't have any homework and I was pretty bored. Masen went out with his family, Aidan was off being Aidan, and everyone else seemed like they were enjoying themselves tonight. Well, there was always Ethan. He's the only one home...I could bother him. He does need help with all his work and what not.

Quietly I headed down the steps and into my grandparent's home. Immediately I spotted Ethan, typing away on his laptop at the kitchen counter. His brows furrowed together in concentration as he also read something off a piece of paper.

"Whatcha doing?" I asked, propping myself up next to him on the counter. He looked up at me and chuckled.

"Just boring research because I've got no life. Nothing you'd want to do on your Friday night," Ethan replied, his tone light as he looked through more papers.

"Try me. My boyfriend decided to cancelled last minute to hang out with his basketball buddies after the game," I scoffed, thinking about Austin. "So, honestly, I'd be more than happy to help you."

Ethan paused for a moment, looking up at me curiously.

"What?" I asked, looking at him. He blinked, shaking his head.

"Nothing, it's just...I can't believe he would um..."

"Cancel on me?" I questioned.

"Yeah, it's just...You're Lily. You don't deserve that," Ethan told me, his tone soft. I smile bittersweetly, looking down.

"That's nice of you, but it's okay. I can help you," I insist as I take part of the paper work he's looking through. "So, what is this?"

"Prophecies. I'm still trying to understand all of Serena's motives and the Volturi's," Ethan informed me as he typed some more on his laptop. "And I'm doing some college homework, so let's not get the two mixed up."

"I got the ancient creepy prophecy," I told him, chuckling as I opened up the page of the old creepy book. As I read through the text, I felt something click.

That's when, just like the first time, it happened...Again.

I wasn't in the room with Ethan anymore. I was in the same room I was with my deceased parents. Instead of the warm fuzzy scene that I had seen before, the entire room was dark and the rain was pounding hard against the windows. Somewhere I heard a door slam. I jumped up, spooked as I went to investigate.

All of a sudden, Gwen came barreling down the hall. A small bump was forming underneath her shirt. I could tell it was me and Aidan in there. Matthew was following close behind her as she ran down the hall.

"We need to leave!" Gwen yelled at him furiously. "Right now! One of us is going to die because of this! He almost found us today!"

I looked to see, in her hands, was the book. It was the same book I was currently holding in reality. I observe Gwen as she chucks it onto the couch. She then looked desperately at my father.

"Matthew, listen to me. He's coming for us. He's going to kill us and our children. We need to leave," She begged him, tears coming out of her eyes profusely. "I'm getting weaker by the moment. We need to go to Boston, now. They're the only ones who can help us with the whole birth process!"

"Damn it, Gwen! Don't you think I know that? I want to but if we leave he'll follow us. Jackson's trying to stall him until we have the opening to leave! Lorenzo's got this entire area surrounded! All of them are trying to find us! It's impossible to get out right now! His followers are everywhere! Gwen, staying here is the only chance we have to survive!" Matthew cried out in frustration.

"There has to be another way. There is always another way," My mother retorted, her eyes watering. "There just has to."

"You know what that means..."

"No. I mean there has to be another way for the two of us-"

"Gwen," my father said her name ever so softly, like a hushed prayer. He looked like he wanted to cry. "There isn't. Lorenzo is too powerful."

"Fine." Gwen's voice was hard, firm, as she tried to control her tears. "If he gets any closer, and Jackson can't do anything...Then we give him what he wants-"

"The kids-"

"We'll think of something. Send them to Zach or have Jackson take them. God, something will be figured out but in the end if one of us dies we both die. I don't want to leave the children alone, but you know what this means. He wants what's in our minds and-"

"And the only way to stop him is if we never let him get a hold of that information. That power..." Matthew whispered, his voice cracking. The two looked at each other as thunder and lightening cracked violently.

"I already grew up without my parents, this is the last thing I wanted to do to my children." Gwen began to sob as she placed her hand on her stomach. I felt a sudden familiarity looking at my mother's hands. I remember them, they were still warm and gentle even though she was on the verge of death when she held me. How soft her skin was. I remember every detail and just looking at her like this reminds me of her way too much.

"I know. This isn't what I wanted for us," Matthew cried, looking down at Gwen. "I...I thought when we'd meet that something would change..."

"A happy ending?" Gwen stifled a sad humorless laugh. "I did too...I really hoped we'd have a happy ending."

"Our kids will be fine. It's going to be fine," Matthew told Gwen. She just sobbed and ran into his arms. I watched as he cradled her into his chest, the way they moved and interacted with each other, it was like my Aunt Bella and Uncle Edward. He moved, she moved. It was like any mate, but deep just like their love.

Suddenly I was thrust back into reality and the whole scene went black. So many questions filled my head. Boston? Brothers? My father had brothers? Were Jackson and Zach those brothers? Are they still alive? Is this why they died? To protect us? Why am I having these visions?

I felt so overwhelmed. It was like time stopped, but the entire world was spinning.

Suddenly, I came back into focus with Ethan's green eyes. He looked worried as he gave me a little shake.

"Lily? Lily? Are you okay?" I blinked, looking down at my hands to see the book had slipped out and was now sprawled out on the ground. Ethan's hands were on my arms, his warm hands. I tilt my head up so we're making eye contact again.

"I...I don't understand what's wrong with me," I whispered.

"What is it? You're shaking," He replied, looking down at my hands. He held on of them in his. I calm down a little at his touch.

"I keep…No, you'll think I'm crazy."

"Try me," He said, cupping my cheek. "We're all supernatural here. Nothing you say will freak me out."

I look up at him. He looked sincere, so I took a deep breath and let it out.

"Look, I keep having these visions every time I hold that book," I confessed to him softly. "And it has something to do with Lorenzo. There are things that happened when Gwen was pregnant with Aidan and I...It doesn't add up. Ethan, this just doesn't add up." I was at the point of hysterics. I was so confused as I let the tears fall down from my eyes.

"Hey. Shhh. It's okay, whatever it is. It's okay," He soothed, wrapping his arms around me. I shook my head as I buried my face into his chest. I gripped tightly to his shirt fabric as he hugged me tightly. I listened to his breathing as I tried to calm down. Ethan's hand rubbing up and down on my back while he rested his chin on the top of my head.

"I need to research my family. I have to understand why I'm having these visions of dead people," I muttered into his shirt, calming down.

"Lily I'm a little confused still. Who are you seeing? Just you're parents?" he asked, pulling apart to look at me. I could see his eyes were filled with concern.

"Yes. Just my dead parents. Every time I hold that book I see them," I said, pointing furiously at the spell book with the sacrifice ritual in it. "Something happened and I feel like they're trying to tell me-"

"Who?"

"My parents," I replied shakily. "Somehow, these visions are trying to tell me something. I don't understand what's going on Ethan, but I feel like Gwen and Matt...They're trying to tell me something."

"So...You see dead people?" he asked, his tone a little amused.

"Shut up," I hit him, trying to stifle my chuckle. "That's not funny."

"Alright, maybe just a little," he teased, winking. I finally let out a chuckle, wiping the tears from the corners of my eyes.

"Seriously though, this is happening to me. I don't understand it," I said, sighing as I looked down at the book, not wanting to touch it. Ethan sensed that and took the book up, placing it far away from me on the countertop. "I need to understand where I come from. Rose and Emmett are my parents, but I need to know who I am biologically. What my parents were like, do I have relatives out there, or what powers Aidan and I could possess..We need to figure this out."

"We?"

"Yes, we. You're helping me." I smirked at him. He smiled, taking my hand in his again.

"Really? You know I have a lot of work..."

"I know, but I really need your help," I told him seriously, looking at him with pleading eyes. "Please?"

"I'll help you. It's a promise." Ethan smiled at me, cupping my face. I smiled, hugging tightly to him.

"Thank you," I muttered into his shoulder. "Very much."

"No problem," He told me as we pulled apart again.

Later that night I walked into my living room to see my parents with Aidan. They were gathered around the T.V to watch old SNL sketches and comedy movies from when they were kids. We use to do this all the time when we were kids, it was our family nights. Ethan and I divided up a plan to start researching more about Gwen and Matt, but it was going to wait.

"Hey, baby, come join us," My mom said, giving me a bright smile as she patted at the seat next to her.

"Yeah Lily bear! Come here!" My dad added excitedly, jumping up and down on the couch with Aidan. I grinned, rushing over there to take a seat in the middle with my brother, right between our parents. My mom wrapped an arm around me and held me tight to her side as all four of us laughed and watched the movies.

Whatever would happen, this would always be my family. Always. They were the people who raised and loved me. I know how much Aidan and I meant to my parents, especially my mother who has desperately wanted a child for decades. We were her hope in a forever filled with none. I know since we were born there's a new sort of light in her eyes, and I would never want to take that from her. Ever. I'm going to find my family, but this is the one I'll keep with me forever.
