Chapter 36- A Question In The Observatory
The rest of the day went by fast and when the bell rang Carey ran to meet Jojo at the gate. He was looking really nervous but when he saw her his face lit up.
"So where are you taking me?" she asked nudging his side with her elbow.
"A very special place, only one other person has been there," they walked side by side though Whoville's busy streets and soon they were at the out skirts of town. They trudged up the hill and Carey fought the urge to hold Jojo's hand. The reddening in her cheeks didn't go unnoticed though. In a few minutes they had reached the top of the hill and the white dome came into view.
"Jojo is… is that what I think it is?" She gasped in realization where he was taking her.
"It's my observatory yeah," he said with a huge smile on his face.
"Are you sure you want me to see it? I mean it is your personal space, it's important to you" She asked amazed that he wanted to share something so personal with her.
You're important to me, he thought as he nodded. "I want to show you the thing that makes me who I am. I think you will like It." he could feel the heat in his face rise as he spoke. They got to where the bucket was and Carey stopped there was a look of fear all over her face. "Carey, are you okay?" Jojo asked tossing the rock he had just picked up in his hand.
"Yeah um just a little nervous," she said her voice an octave higher than usual.
"I wouldn't take you if I wasn't positive it was safe." He said softly looking into her blue eyes. She relaxed slightly and nodded.
"Okay I trust you." She said followed him to the edge of the huge abyss. Just don't look down. She told herself. Jojo helped her into the bucket and then hopped in himself. He never noticed how small the bucket actually was until now. He had to be careful not to step on Carey's toes. They got across and Carey only made a scared sound once. They got out and onto the ledge.
"Um, this might be a bit more difficult" he said looking at the sling shot he hadn't thought this whole part though and now he hoped he didn't ruin everything. "It might be easier if we go one at a time. Do you want me to go first or do you want too?" he said scratching the back if his head.
"Um… you go first." She said trying to calm herself down. Jojo nodded and told her exactly what he was doing so she could after him. It looked simple enough and after she watched Jojo fly up and land at the top safely she sat down on the unicycle.
"Okay Carey you can do this remember Jojo is up at the top waiting for you and you get to see his music inventions." She made a sort of squeak sound when the board feel back. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes and pulled the handle. She felt herself being launched into the air and nearly screamed but then her feet hit something solid. She opened her eyes to see Jojo standing in front of her his caramel colored eyes shining.
"You did it!" he said laughing but when her expression hadn't changed from the in shock one he took a step closer to her. "Carey? Are you okay?"
A huge smile spread across her face. "That was so much fun! I can't believe I did that, I've never done anything so crazy and awesome!" she laughed running around on the grassy top. She turned and tackled hugged Jojo. He stumbled back a little, but once he regained his balance he hugged her back. They stayed like that for a while it was the longest hug Jojo could remember ever being a part of (the awkward family group hugs were he got stuck in the middle didn't count). Carey let go after a while her cheeks were bright red but she was smiling.
"Come on you haven't even seen inside yet!" Jojo said grabbing her hand and running to the door to the observatory. He let go of her hand to pull the key out of his pocket and unlocked the door, but before he opened it he took a deep breath and looked over at Carey.
"You alright?"
"Inside is… is my second home and… I want to show it to you not only because I think you will like it but because I trust you... I want so share the thing that is really important to me with… the person who is… important to me," as he spoke his voice got quieter and he was starting to feel incredibly nervous. He knew his plan, he had run it though his head a billion times over but now that he was there at the observatory with her he wasn't sure he could do it.
"Jojo?" she was blushing and he realized he had been silent for a while.
"Sorry… um… let's just go in," he took a deep breath and turned the handle.
The room its self was dimly light when they walked in and Carey could only make out faint shapes. Jojo walked over to a light switch and the room filled with warm light. As she looked around the room her jaw slowly dropped. The room was incredible! There were musical instruments from wall to wall and even some that went across the room.
"Jojo, I don't know what to say… this is amazing! Did you really build all of this by yourself?" Carey gasped looking over at the blushing Who. Jojo nodded shuffling his feet.
"Do, do you wanna hear it in full swing?" he asked looking over at her though his hair.
"Please!" a huge smile spread across her face and he clapped her hands together.
"Okay, stay here," Jojo said and took off running toward the ladder at the far side of the room. As he started up each instrument the sound of the music got better and better and soon the room and Carey's ears were filled with the beautiful noise. She watched as Jojo moved around the room and even though she guessed he had done this more than a hundred times she still hopped he didn't fall.
Jojo felt the music fill his being and all the scared feeling he had before was carried away as he slid down the falling marbles ladder. The little chiming sound they made brought a smile to his face. He let out a cheer as the giant rubber band ball hitting the drum shot him up and perfectly into the red bucket.
"Grab my hand," he called to Carey who had to stand on her tip toes to reach. Jojo pulled her into the bucket and it shot up ward. They came to a stop and Jojo opened the observatory's observation window. Carey got out of the bucket and gasped at the view.
"Jojo this is amazing you can see all of Whoville from here!"
"It's great isn't it," he watched her as she took in the scenery. After a while they sat down listening to the music slowly stopping and the feeling the warm breeze on their faces.
I can't believe he let me see his observatory, I mean this is his world and he let me in to it. The music was so magical and he looked so happy making his inventions work. I wonder what made him finally decide to bring me here. Carey thought as she glanced over at the wonderful Who next to her.
Jojo noticed Carey looking at him and he took a deep breath. Now or never I guess he said to himself. "Hey Carey, um, can I… can I ask you something?"
"You can always ask me something," she laughed bumping him with her shoulder. He nodded and moved to sit in front of her.
"Okay so I… I've never done this so… please bear with me, Carey, will um will you go with me…. to the dance?" his caramel eyes stared nervously though his hair at her wide blue ones. Neither of them said anything for several seconds.
Carey's mind was racing! She hadn't expected that. She hadn't really thought about the dance much and until now she hadn't been planning on going. She wasn't one for events like that; they made her feel uncomfortable and small. But she always felt better when Jojo was with her so maybe she could do it. All the "what ifs" started playing in her head and she didn't know what to do. She didn't want to hurt him or herself. Her head started to spin.
"Jojo… I…I don't know," her voice come out strained as she looked at him trying to fight back the panic.
AN- yeah now I'm sure you are all mad at me for this ending but calm down it will all work out. The next chapter is gunna be pretty sappy. Please don't hate me…. I will post then next chapter soon (I hope!)
