Chapter Thirty-Five: Not Meant To Be.

Opening her eyes, Thalia was nearly blinded by the bright light that surrounded her and she wracked her brain trying to remember what had happened; the last thing that she remembered was being on the battlefield. Once her eyes adjusted to the light, Thalia turned around wondering where she was and why she was here; she wasn't at the mountain for sure right now. She stopped when her eyes landed on a very familiar figure standing just feet from her; a feeling started to form in her stomach and she knew that this couldn't be good.

"Hello Thalia," Amphitrite greeted softly, she offered her daughter a sad smile knowing that this was not how this was meant to end; she had never thought that they would be reunited this way. For many years, she had pictured them finally being reunited after Thalia had played her part in the war to come; she'd always imagined it to be a happy reunion but not like this.

"What's going on?" Thalia asked looking around, she didn't think she was Olympus and she had no memories of the place that she couldn't resided in. The pit in her stomach continued to grow and Thalia looked back at her mother waiting for an answer; she wanted to know if her children and Thorin were alright.

"What do you remember?" Amphitrite questioned not wanting to break the news to her right away, she slowly approached Thalia; her dress flowing behind her as she moved afraid of how Thalia would react. Looking down for a moment, Thalia wasn't sure what she was meant to remember as images started to flash before her eyes and she looked at her stomach.

"I was stabbed…" Thalia whispered knowing that she should be bleeding right now but there was no sign of the damaged caused by the soldier that had screamed Long Live the Queen. She looked at Amphitrite who nodded her head, a sad look on her face as she thought about the actions that had led to this moment and what it could mean.

"You're not dead yet… you're trapped between the living and the dead," Amphitrite murmured knowing that she had to explain, she had never thought that it would be her daughter in this situation. A part of her wished that perhaps one of the other children were in this situation and she hated that they were having to do this; she had never wanted this to happen in the first place.

"The decision is yours Thalia… but you must choose wisely," Amphitrite said trying to sound more confident than she felt, she had no doubts what her daughter would choose even if it broke her heart. There was silence between the two of them as they stared at one another, the room seemingly void of anything but them.

"I don't understand," Thalia said after a few minutes, there was so much that she didn't understand and she wished that for once things would just be explained to her. For a moment, Amphitrite looked heartbroken and Thalia took a step forward not sure what was wrong; she was sure that she had never seen her look this way, she truly looked upset about what was happening.

"You can remain here with us, restored to your true form and reunited with me and your father. But you may never return to the realm of the living," Amphitrite started to explain knowing that time wasn't on their side.

"Or you return to life. Never to see us again. We shall be unable to interfere in your life and you shall not be granted entrance to Elysium when you do finally pass," Amphitrite continued, she stared at her daughter knowing that this could be the very last time that they would see each other like this. Her words were greeted with silence, Thalia unsure what to make of what she was being told; her head whirled with the knowledge that this one decision was going to change her life no matter what she choose.

"I don't understand… I have to choose whether I live or die?" Thalia asked wanting to be sure, she never thought that she would be in the situation that she was in and she knew what she would choose in a heartbeat. There was no way that she would leave her children without a mother, she adored them and she wanted nothing more than to see them grow up safe.

"In a way yes. You were not born a mortal Thalia. You were made that way… should you remain with us then you shall be immortal again," Amphitrite explained wishing that she didn't have to do this, she had all but begged to be the one to great Thalia when she arrived. She couldn't bare the thought of someone else speaking with Thalia like this when this could very well be the last time that she saw her daughter.

"If I do so… I'll never see my children again?" Thalia checked wanting to know for sure, it wasn't a decision that she would ever make lightly either way she would lose someone but she knew that she had to be certain and she wasn't going to regret her choice. Amphitrite nodded her head, she looked away from Thalia with tears in her eyes; she cursed everything that had meant that they were here now instead of how she had pictured all those years ago.

She wished that she could have been a more active part in her daughter's life, she had been deprived of her daughter and she had watched her grow from a far. Thalia stared at her mother and sighed, she crossed the space between them and wrapped her arms around her; she held Amphitrite knowing what she must be feeling right now.

"I'm sorry," Thalia whispered closing her eyes, she could imagine the pain that Amphitrite was going through especially since if she choose to remain then she would suffer the same. She loved her children and she would do anything for them, she only wished that things had never come to this; she couldn't believe that she hadn't seen the attack coming.

"I know we never got to spend that much time together… I wish we had been given the chance," Thalia continued shaking her head, she held onto Amphitrite who clung to her as she started to cry. It had never been fair to them and Thalia could only wonder how things might have been if they'd been given the chance; she would never regret her children and she would do anything for them.

"I have always been so proud of you. Everything you have endured, everything you have done. You are the best thing that your father and I have ever created," Amphitrite told Thalia, she pulled back and cupped her daughter's face; their time together was nearly done and she prayed that what came next would not break her heart. There would be no reunion for them again, Thalia would not pass to Elysium when she died and she would forever be forced to watch her daughter's life from a far.

"I love you Thalia. You are everything that I have ever dreamed you would be," Amphitrite whispered kissing Thalia's forehead, she closed her eyes cherishing the moment as the room around them started to grow dark. It wasn't going to be easy but Amphitrite prayed that this worked, she looked forward to watching her many grandchildren grow up. Amphitrite was certain that Theseus and Samara weren't going to be her last, she would watch the family grow from here and she wanted nothing more for them to be happy.

"It's time," Amphitrite whispered as the room faded to back, Thalia felt a searing pain in her stomach and the darkness was suffocating as she felt a pressure like no other in her chest.
