Family Meeting
Davina was sick through the night and Hayley struggled to figure out what was going on with her, the young girl's body getting weaker. Feeling like she was in the way, Cami got up early that morning. Not sure what to do with herself, she went downstairs, but saw that Damon and Kol were both still sleeping on opposite couches. She didn't want to wake Damon, but she wasn't quite sure what to do now that she was up walking around the quiet house. Everyone told her she could ask if she needed anything, or help herself to whatever she wanted, but she wasn't comfortable enough with that yet.
"Oh, good morning," she heard Violet saying behind her and she jumped as her voice broke the silence. "Sorry," Violet laughed a little at scaring her. "Do you want breakfast?"
"Um...sure," Cami nodded, following Violet into the kitchen. "Do you ever sleep?" she asked Violet lightly. She had been up when she and Damon got back to the house. Granted, so had the others, but they weren't up now.
"Is that a vampire joke?" Violet teased her. "No, it's just I've got two babies kicking me on either side so it's hard to sleep."
"That kinda sucks," Cami said honestly.
"You get used to it," Violet smiled. Maybe it was because she was Damon's twin or maybe it was because she had been the most welcoming out of a group of already welcoming people, but either way Cami was pretty sure Violet was her favorite so far. "So, what do you want for breakfast?"
"Ah, up to you," Cami shrugged now and Violet got out the ingredients for pancakes. Both stopped though when the house started shaking, things falling off the walls and breaking; the girls each grabbed the counter to steady themselves and soon, the earthquake subsided. Not much to Cami's surprise, Klaus was already downstairs in the kitchen with them. She could tell how much he adored Violet.
"Are you all right?" he asked her in concern.
"Fine," she nodded. "What was that? An earthquake?"
"What's going on?" Damon asked now, him and Kol both up. Everyone had started to stir in the house. "Are you ok?" he asked Cami now.
"Yeah, I'm ok," Cami promised, feeling a few butterflies in her stomach; she couldn't help it. She heard the others on the stairs, all coming to make sure everyone was all right.
"Are there even earthquakes in New Orleans?" Rebekah was asking.
"It wasn't just an earthquake," Hayley said, arriving last. "It was Davina. There's something seriously wrong, with all the magic she has..."
"I wanna go see her," Cami said and Hayley nodded; Cami left to go upstairs quickly, Damon following her.
"You don't think this has to do with those pictures Celeste, do you?" Kol asked Hayley now and she gave him a look. As of now, she had been hoping to keep that a secret. She knew that her sister was looking for Celeste's resting place, which wouldn't go over too well with the family. Before she went to them with anything about Celeste, she wanted to make sure she knew what was happening first.
"What pictures of Celeste?" Elijah asked curiously.
"Your old girlfriend?" Katherine raised an eye brow as Hayley continued to shake her head at Kol.
"Ah, the secret pictures of Celeste," he gave up, taking out his phone and showing them what they had found. Last night, after Davina fell asleep, Kol and Hayley started looking through what she had in her bag to see if there was any explanation for her illness. They came across some drawings she had done, and when they were put together, they made Celeste's portrait.
"That's Celeste all right," Klaus commented, looking over Elijah's shoulder.
"Who is she?" Violet asked, having heard a little bit about her but Celeste had died in 1820, years before any of the Salvatores were even born.
"A witch that has been dead for two hundred years," Rebekah chimed in, taking the phone and observing the picture of the drawings. "Which makes me wonder what has Davina drawing her."
"I don't know," Hayley said honestly, though she really did hope that Davina didn't see Celeste coming back from the grave; that was the last thing they needed. "I'm going to have to call Sophie though, to see what the other witches know about this."
"I'll just save you the trouble and go get her myself," Klaus said, wanting some answers himself about how and why Davina was about to take down his family's home with her uncontrolled magic.
Cami and Damon stayed upstairs with Davina, with Cami soothing her until she went back to sleep. It was easy to see that she was sick and was in a lot of pain. Shortly after Cami and Damon got to the room, Davina started coughing and choking, eventually coughing dirt all over the bed sheets as the house started shaking again. Not knowing what to do or how to help her pained Cami as she felt responsible for Davina now.
"They should be back soon with Sophie," Damon said quietly as Cami sat on Davina's bed, watching her rest. "This is a witch thing so...guess it's better to ask the witches."
"Do you trust them?" Cami asked, looking at him now.
"Um, I trust Hayley," Damon clarified. "But, after everything with Agnes..." He shrugged. "I don't think their coven is going to try anything again."
"What about now?" Cami asked, looking towards Davina who was sleeping.
"Hayley said it probably has to do with all the power she has," Damon explained. "She told you about the harvest, right?"
"How those witches killed three other girls and were going to kill her?" Cami asked, disgust in her voice. "Yeah, she told me."
"Hey," Stefan said from the doorway, getting them to look over. "Sorry to interrupt, but Sophie's here and she knows what's going on. So..." He nodded his head back. "Family meeting, I guess."
"Ok," Damon nodded.
"I can just wait up here," Cami offered.
"Um, we actually wanted you to come down too," Stefan told her and Cami looked surprised. "You came with Davina, you're just as involved as the rest of us."
"Oh...right," Cami nodded; she had been wondering if the others assumed she had some involvement with Damon.
It was true, she had liked him a lot in the past few months. Once she learned what he was though and that he had been lying to her, she was furious. He was human now though, he had taken care of her and Davina, his family had been so welcoming. She wasn't sure what to do or what she felt, though part of her still cared for Damon a lot. As she came downstairs with him and Stefan, seeing all the others either sitting or standing around the living room, she wondered what exactly she had just gotten herself accepted into. A family of vampires, witches, and mixes of werewolves? It was strange, but at the same time, almost a welcome surprise.
"So...what?" Klaus asked first now that everyone was there, all eyes on Sophie as she held the explanation.
"Davina's magic is taking over her," Sophie said. "It's going to start manifesting itself as different elements. First was earth, then it'll be wind, water, and fire." She looked at Hayley. "And you know what that means."
"What's she talking about?" Cami asked Hayley now who seemed hesitant to answer as she had been afraid of this.
"It means that if the harvest isn't completed, Davina's not just going to tear down the house," Hayley answered now. "It's going to be the entire city."
"Finish the harvest?" Cami asked. "You mean kill her." She looked around the room in disbelief. "You can't do that, I-"
"They can't anyway," Violet said now. "All the elders are gone."
"That's why I asked you two about Celeste," Sophie said, looking at Hayley and Kol now. "If I can consecrate her remains, I'd have the power to become an elder and-"
"Oh so you get to have more power," Kol said to her now. "And you get what you want this entire time."
"If we finish the ritual, the girls will come back," Sophie snapped at him. "All I've ever wanted this entire time was to get my younger sister back. Which," she looked to Hayley now. "Before you started living with the vampires, you wanted too."
"You think I don't want Monique back?" Hayley asked defensively.
"I've hardly seen you do anything about it," Sophie argued with her sister. "I went and I found Celeste's grave on my own, but her magic's already gone. Which is why I'm here." She looked in the direction of Klaus and Elijah. "I know about the coffins, I know about your mother, I know she's somewhere here."
"You want us to let you consecrate our mother?" Rebekah asked, raising her eye brows. "And, what, just hand you the magic of the most powerful witch in history?"
"I never met mommy original," Katherine commented now.
"Be glad you didn't," Violet mumbled, remembering how Esther had tried to kill her before.
"She wouldn't be coming back, I'd just be taking her magic," Sophie told them.
"No," Elijah told her.
"He's right," Klaus agreed. "I hardly trust you with the magic you have." Sophie rolled her eyes.
"Then give it to Hayley," Sophie said, throwing her hands up in exasperation. "Because, unless you have a better plan to stop that..." Outside they could see the clouds rolling in for a storm, the wind starting to pick up. "This is the only option we have."
"What do you think Hayley?" Stefan asked her and she shook her head.
"It's not up to me," Hayley said, looking at Cami, who again looked surprised.
"Me?" Cami asked, raising her eye brows. "Why me?"
"You're the one that's brought her here, that's been taking care of her," Hayley explained.
"I don't think that I'm the one you should be asking," Cami said now. "I think the only person that can have a say in what happens to Davina is Davina."
Cami went upstairs now, the others agreeing with her decision. Though they all wanted to keep the house and the city they loved safe, they couldn't just hand over the sixteen year old like that. Even if it was dangerous, they knew that Davina had to be the one to make the choice. Should she decide not to go through with it though, they were ready to get out of there right away. After all, the last disaster of fire would kill the vampires.
"Hey," Cami said, smiling weakly as she saw Davina was awake.
"I heard the arguing," Davina said before starting to cough, this time though it was water that she spit onto the floor. Cami went over to sit with her until it stopped, holding her hair for her. Outside, Cami heard it starting to rain now, taking these witch omens more seriously as each one passed.
"You tell me whatever you want," Cami assured her, taking her hand. "Just tell me what you want to do and we can do that, all right?" Davina was quiet for a moment.
"I have to go," Davina told her now.
"...you're sure?" Cami let out a breath. Even though she knew that meant everyone else got to be safe, not just in this family but in the city, it still meant Davina had to die. Even though Sophie and Hayley continued to believe the girls would come back, part of Cami wondered if they just had to believe that because they had lost their younger sister in the harvest.
"If I don't, I die and so does everyone else," Davina told her.
"You," Cami blinked away tears now, forcing a smile for her young friend. "Are so brave."
"You're my friend," Davina told her now. "And I want to keep my friends safe."
Even though Damon didn't think it was a good idea, he took Cami with him, Kol, Hayley, and Sophie to the cemetery. He felt that it wasn't a good place for her to be, though everyone was sure that Davina was going to come back. After all, the ritual is what got her all that power in the first place. Something had to be happening from the harvest, right? Cami was insistent, wanting to stay with Davina, afraid the teen would otherwise feel alone during what was easily the scariest time in her life. With the others gone, the remaining family members had nothing to do but wait.
As the storm raged outside, Stefan, Klaus, and Elijah went to make sure the shutters were closed on all the windows outside as things started flying around, hitting the side of the house; they worried the glass would break and someone might get hurt. As the storm seemed to get worse, Rebekah, Violet, and Katherine all began to gather candles and flashlights in case the power went.
"Are you sure we should be getting so much...fire together?" Violet asked, remembering Sophie's warning of the last manifesting disaster.
"They're going to finish the harvest," Rebekah said, setting the rest of the candles on the coffee table. "This will all be over, and everyone will be safe."
"Including Davina?" Katherine asked with raised eye brows and Violet and Rebekah gave her a look. "What? I'm just saying what everyone else is thinking." She looked at them seriously as she sat on the couch with them. "Do you think she'll come back?"
"I think Sophie and Hayley know what they're talking about," Violet said.
"The girls that have nothing to lose?" Katherine asked. By now, everyone knew their youngest sister had died in the harvest, and their mother had died using a locator spell to try to find Davina to finish the ritual.
"Sophie might not," Rebekah agreed. "But, Davina matters to Cami who matters to Damon."
"So, she's family," Violet finished for her and Rebekah nodded. "Hayley wouldn't hurt our family." Katherine still didn't seem sure. "Is there something else?"
"This whole thing with Celeste," Katherine started off.
"Oh please," Rebekah rolled her eyes. "Elijah might have...enjoyed being with her, but she was never you. I've seen him with you both."
"Um, ok?" Katherine said in confusion. "Wasn't really thinking about the enjoyment, but thanks for that." Rebekah just shrugged. "It's just that, Sophie said that the magic was already taken from her remains right? Well, where did it all go?"
"Ugh, I don't want to think about that," Violet complained, rubbing her forehead. It was all too much.
"Hey," Stefan said, coming back in with Elijah and Klaus now, the three of them taking off their jackets and shaking off the rain.
"Everything ok?" Rebekah asked them.
"Fine," Stefan promised.
"Though hopefully it starts clearing up soon," Klaus added.
They waited the storm out and luckily it cleared up, without the power going out or much damage happening to the house. With the storm cleared, they could only assume that the ritual was over. But did that mean Davina was ok, or that Monique came back? Violet tried her brother a few times, but didn't get an answer. As she and Rebekah waited on their return, the others were looking through the rest of Davina's drawings in the study, concerned now about her drawings of Celeste. What did that all mean? Violet's head was spinning and she knew that was true for the others. When Damon came back alone, she felt her stomach sink.
"It didn't work," she said softly and he shook his head.
"Oh my God," Rebekah gasped.
"I'm just gonna grab some stuff," Damon nodded his head at the stairs. "Cami's with Hayley and Sophie right now, me and Kol were going to stay in there with them." Violet nodded. She knew Cami was going to be so upset at the loss of Davina, just as Hayley and Sophie would be devastated about not getting Monique back.
"What happened?" she asked curiously.
"Hayley did everything right," he shrugged. "But, when it came time for them to come back, nothing happened."
"So, the magic just disappeared?" Rebekah raised her eye brows and Damon shrugged again, heading for the stairs.
"I guess so," he nodded, going up to get his things now.
"How does that just happen?" Violet asked Rebekah now.
"It doesn't," Rebekah shook her head. "Magic like that doesn't just vanish." She paused. "I think Katherine's right, I think someone's taking the power. The girls', Celete's..."
"What if it is Celeste?" Violet offered. "What if that was why Davina was drawing her, she knew she was coming back."
"There's no way," Rebekah protested. "Witches can't just resurrect themselves. For one to have that much power-"
"They'd have to be like your mother?" Violet interrupted, raising an eye brow. Esther was the only witch that Violet had ever heard of being able to come back from the dead, and she was the original witch.
"So, a witch that's as strong as my mother," Rebekah continued. "A witch that, at this point, probably is inhabiting someone else's body so we don't recognize her."
"Powerful and faceless," Violet observed.
"Fabulous," Rebekah sighed. At least when Esther had come back they knew who to look for.
