Chapter 36 - edited 4/25/2019
"This is delicious. honey."
"Mom, can you not do that in front of me?" No one else is here but still. It might only be a kiss on the forehead but still. It's gross.
"Sorry." She smiled at her husband who did the same. "Isn't this delicious?"
"awesome, Dad." Taking a bite of the tofu, she rolled her eyes at her mother who is extending her fork towards her father's mouth. No matter how many times she told her mother not to do that in front of her, her mother just wouldn't listen.
"You know, someday you would be doing this to your husband…and when that happens, you'll know why."
"I already know why. The neighbors know why. My friends know why. Do you really have to do that in public? It's…weird." ...and gross… She said the last two words in her own mind.
"someday you will find someone you love and you'll understand."
This time, she didn't roll her eyes but instead stared at her mother to let her know that she's doing it again. Every time they disagree, her mother always brings up the future as if it will prove her point. Her father, on the other hand, knows that it doesn't.
"Since we're on that subject and you are old enough, I'm just going to say it…straight out. No sex before marriage."
"Daaaad!…." She immediately took her dish to the sink to avoid the discussion. Unlike her mother who's more eloquent, her father sometimes is too straightforward.
"um honey, I already have that talk with her."
"Oh…okay…good…." Satisfied, he returned to eating dinner.
"…and Amy, try to find someone who knows how to cook, you'll love him even more."
Suddenly, the sound of broken dish startled her. After blinking a few times, she realized where she is, what just happened.
"Jannnnet." Lucy rolled her eyes while holding the tray.
"Sorry." Janet said, bending down to pick up the broken pieces of the cup.
Sitting on the bed would probably get her yelled but Lucy took a chance anyway. If she's not allowed, then she'd move. "you okay?" No fever is a good sign. No cold sweat is also a good sign. Letting her sleep was the right call. "Are you hungry?" Getting only a silent stare, Lucy didn't wait for a response and scooped up a spoonful of vegetable soup with macaroni. She should be hungry so Lucy plans on sitting still while holding the spoon as long as she can.
Lucinda Reynolds aka Lucy Diamond is known to be involved in numerous crimes but little is known about her personality since it was reported that no agent has ever talked to her and survived. Is that true? Finding out the truth is not the topic of her paper; she hasn't even decided on what the thesis statement would be yet but she did decide on writing about the bad ass, ruthless criminal who now seems to be the complete opposite from what she pictured. Those big dark brown eyes brimming with concern, that caring voice, those dimples appearing each time she smiles make her look so…
"Here's the antibiotics." Janet said, putting another cup of warm water down on the table.
"Thank you." Lucy responded without looking at Janet since she's in the middle of putting another spoonful of macaroni into Amy's mouth.
Words of gratitude for something that simple is surprising to hear. It seems that the one whom they have been trying to capture for years isn't who she used to be or like Janet said, she's not as bad as people think she is, definitely not ruthless. She's nice according to Janet. She can be gentle, thoughtful, she's funny…is that why she…that I… Taking another spoonful, being this close, sitting on this bed, almost touching, she can't help thinking back to what happened earlier, what caused her to pass out, learning that she is no longer single, no longer…pure.
"Did I…enjoy it?"
Getting a question out of the blue can confuse anyone. "Enjoy…what?" Lucy asked.
"Sex."
Oh…Laughing would be inappropriate so Lucy didn't. Janet did though and seems to have a tummy ache from laughing so hard. That's how Amy is. Most of the time, she's serious, then there are times she can say something unexpected. Where did that come from?
"you did..."
"How do you know?" Janet should not be the one responding.
"because we talked about it."
"She told you?" Lucy asked. Kristin wouldn't kiss and tell. Would she?
"I told you? I wouldn't do that. I didn't…Did I?" Kristin might have. After Janet explained that she only heard from outside, she realized that Kristin is a lot of like her except for the fact that she can't picture herself being with a woman, let alone a criminal.
"Do you want more?" Lucy is happy to get a nod. "Here, take these first." After coming back with another bowl, she expected Janet to step aside.
"I can do this. Go eat."
Janet's offer is appreciated but what's up with the wink? Whatever. Since today is the first day, being able to get Amy to behave differently towards her is a good sign, so it would be better to take it slow like the doctor said.
"Did you just tell her what to do?" Amy asked after Lucy left. Back in the days of the DEBS, everybody is afraid of the criminal mastermind. She's surprised how much Janet has changed.
"Oh…I did…didn't I? Remind me not to do that. Sometimes I forget who she is. But you…you can tell her what to do."
That's uncomforting. "What am I going to do?" Amy covered her face in frustration.
"What's wrong?"
"What's wrong? Janet, I'm not gay."
"Are you sure about that?" Janet again can't resist but this time just giggled, remembering that moment when Amy said the same thing years ago.
"Of course I'm sure."
"Tell me honestly…you don't feel the slightest bit attracted to her."
"Of course not." Saying it louder would be more convincing but she can't because she has food in her mouth.
"You don't think she's beautiful."
She is but so what?
The answer is sssso obvious. "Don't worry. You might not feel that way right now, but your memory will come back."
"What if it doesn't?"
"If it doesn't, then…then…let's not think about that. What you need to do right now is take care of yourself, get better." Do one thing at a time is the advice she gave to Lucy. She's glad Amy is taking her advice too.
Do one thing at a time. That's what Lucy did after filling her stomach with food, "Give me a hand, Scud." Scud quickly assisted and took the bags of groceries to the kitchen. That's usually what happens when she goes to the supermarket. One thing led to another. Now that Amy is back, different types of food and products need to be bought.
"I bought you these." She bought a lot of stuff so she took one particular product from the bag, Amy's favorite brand of makeup which is different from what Kristin used. What's wrong? She expected Amy to say something if not 'Thank you' not just looking at her. "I got your favorite shampoo, toothpaste, body wash, moisturizer, and…ohh…shoooot, I forgot your facial cream…I'll go get it now."
"Luce"
Did she just… Sometimes Scud calls her that, Amy too. "you...remember?"
"You don't have to get that."
Ohh… Maybe she's going to use Kristin's or Janet's but that look seems to be for another reason because Janet is also looking at her differently. What did she tell her? It's obvious Janet did otherwise she wouldn't have left the living room . The question is what did she tell Amy that would cause her to apologize? For what? She has no idea because Amy just went back to her own bedroom without explaining.
Locking the bedroom door behind her, Amy can no longer hold her tears in. Anyone who heard would be touched by a story of love, death and revenge. If it is about someone else, she would have questioned whether it was fiction. Having heard in the last hour of what happened in more detail, their love, their sacrifice, pain and revenge, she now understands what she didn't before but there is nothing she could do except say sorry. "I can't remember anything." If the story is about someone else, she would want them to have a happy ending. But it's not. That feeling isn't there so how can I be with her if I don't feel that way?
Thoughts eventually caused her mind to sleep. Not long but two hours did make her feel better. Now she's hungry. Awkwardness is what she is expecting in the dining room; never did she expect this.
"Wow…looks delicious. Does it have meat in it?"
"It's vegetable casserole." Janet said, with a smile.
Can't see what's underneath it, so just wants to make sure. "Where's…" Amy trailed off when the one she was asking about just came in with a basket of mini crescent rolls. With Janet and Scud here, dinner time isn't as awkward as she thought it would be. Janet always has something to say; she hasn't changed much. Food is a great topic for conversation. If Janet didn't say, she would've have known who made it which shocked her to the point where she had to ask. "seriously?" Lucy Diamond knows how to cook? That's shocking. What else does she know how to do? Other than how to make the casserole, thanks to Janet for asking, she also learned how the former diamond thief learned how to cook. Cooking classes? There's nothing wrong with that until she learned from Scud that he was the one who persuaded Lucy to take the class but not to learn how to cook but mainly to meet women. …Oh… His intention became clear when the moment is suddenly filled with laughter. Even she can't control herself from laughing after learning that most of the women in the cooking classes were married. She laughed even harder when he said that many did find interest in Lucy but all of them wanted to play matchmaker for either their sons, brothers and male friends. Other than this failed plan, she didn't learn anything else but she did feel that all three of them were trying to make the situation and atmosphere as normal as possible. Is this how it's going to be like?
Dinner went well considering the circumstances. Since today is only the first day, Lucy allowed Janet and Scud do most of the talking. Like the doctor said, take it slow so she intends on doing that and kept the thoughts to herself. No need to tell Amy about Anthony and no need to tell her what Anthony has been helping her with but definitely a need to let Anthony and Uncle Nick know about Amy. After hanging up the call with Uncle Nick, she didn't expect Amy to be the one knocking on the door.
"Is my pajamas inside?"
Ohh…she knew Amy wasn't planning on sleeping here but now seeing her taking everything back, she can't help feeling like they're having an argument, a fight, worse, a divorce. "Amy."
Amy stood waiting at the door while wondering what Lucy wants to talk about since she didn't say much during dinner time. Not talk but giving her back what doesn't belong to her. "They belong to Kristin, not me." The one who agreed to marry her is Kristin not me. The one who loves her is Kristin not me. Accepting her rings would mean there could be a chance for us to get together. I can't promise that. But damn it. Do you have to be so blunt? That look of sadness is enough to make her regret for speaking out without thinking it thru. Wouldn't it be better to just say. "Lucy, keep them in a safe place." Getting a nod and an okay, Amy continued walking towards her own bedroom, feeling better about her decision; it's the right thing to say.
Lucy slept well even though she slept alone because Amy is back but "Oh shit." Now that she's awake, her mind is fully functioning again. She quickly jumped off the bed. "Amy….Amy." Getting no answer means Amy is not in the bedroom so she ran down the stairs, then to the dining room where the noises came from. …Ohh…It's obvious everything is okay otherwise they wouldn't be having breakfast. It's obvious Amy didn't have anterograde amnesia like the character in the movie that she told Kristin about otherwise Amy wouldn't be just sitting there, staring at her in confusion. That's good. That's all she wants to know.
"What's wrong?" Amy asked after Lucy left the dining room, then realized Scud and Janet both are as confused as she is.
Three weeks of rest made a big difference. Amy not only looks better but feels better which Lucy noticed from the way Amy has been more talkative and relaxed around her than before. But despite the change of behavior, she is still not allowed to go to the doctor appointments with her. Today is different though. Today, they planned on doing something after the doctor's appointment. Thanks to Scud for coming up with the idea otherwise she again wouldn't be allowed to go. After arriving to the hospital, she realized that nothing has changed. She and Scud were told to stay in the lobby to wait.
"Keira!"
It's not loud but loud enough to attract the attention of others sitting near her. Why is she still calling me that? A slip of the tongue, probably. What is she doing here? Ohh…
"What are you doing here?" Alexis asked in excitement until she saw who they're looking at. Oh Shoot. Standing behind her is mother.
"Is there something you want to tell me, Alexis?"
"I'll explain later." Much later because right not, she can't think of anything other than the one standing in front of her.
It became obvious why Alexis would be here after seeing her mother. It's also obvious what they would want to know so after letting them know that Kristin not Amy is feeling much better, Lucy again felt the need to thank Alexis' mother for her help.
"She still can't remember?" Alexis waited until her mother went back to work to ask. That look says it all. "Give her some time. "
Lucy appreciated the comforting words as well as the hug but she would like to know what just happened. Explain later?
"Sorry, I forgot." Alexis explained the situation and is glad that she did because Lucy came up with a logical explanation that would satisfy her mother's curiosity. Just tell her the truth and the truth is she had no idea Keira's death was fake. She had no idea that Keira was working on a top secret government case; Nobody can know, not even Ashley, at least not now. That'll work. Noticing two familiar faces from ten feet away, Alexis stopped talking. "Kris…I mean…Amy. How are you?" Getting a one word response 'fine' doesn't surprise her. Her behavior does though.
"Is Ashley home? I want to visit Ashley."
"um Amy, we…" Before Lucy can tell her her plans for today, she was cut off.
"I'll call you, okay?"
"Amy…" The plan was to take her to various places to help her remember. Visiting Ashley is a good idea but it's not part of her plan today. But what can she do? Amy isn't listening, pulling Alexis with her without giving her a chance to say anything to change her mind.
Alexis doesn't mind. Whatever she can do to help her remember…
"So…do you remember anything?"
"Nope"
Nothing at all? If they're alone inside the car, she would've continued the conversation. Looks like Amy feels the same way since she waited until they're all alone to ask the first question.
"Do you love her?"
"You…remember?" Alexis said.
"...just a guess." Just as I thought. Surprising though, she didn't hide it.
"She only loves you."
"You mean Kristin."
"She loves you and Kristin." Alexis said, confused with Amy's response and her own.
"Are we friends?"
"Yes" Saying only yes might not be enough so she held onto Amy's hands and assured her once more that they are good friends even though they fell in love with the same person.
"So you two never…"
"NO!…of course not!"
"What I was going to ask is…if you two ever dated, but it seems that you're thinking of something else." Never dated? Hard to believe. The way they hugged each other back in the hospital lasted too long to be considered…just friends.
Confused with the response given, Alexis decided not to say anything and instead head up the stairs to her bedroom. "I'll be...right back." Besides, what can she say to that?
Nothing going on? Why react like that if there's nothing going on? It's obvious there was if not now. Amy continued to take a look around. The décor of a living room can tell a lot about the people who lives here. Family pictures too. Nothing looks familiar, not even the little girl in the photo with whom Kristin is standing next to. Ashley, Michel, Alexis and this must be … oh, photo albums… more pictures might help. More pictures of Kristin with a family that she infiltrated. Hah…so that's how… She still can't remember but she figured out how Kristin was able to work undercover without being discovered. Art of seduction, that's how. Back in the days of the DEBS, she herself had used this method plenty of times while undercover to get important information. Luckily the missions were short term assignments and there were always someone looking out for her in case she gets in trouble.
"An assignment that lasted a year. No wonder she became so attached to them." She can only hope that Kristin didn't sacrifice herself for a job. That's why she's here, to find out what type of person Kristin is, was…ughh… The pictures might give others the idea that they're a family but none shows any signs of closeness between Michel and …. except for this one…hmm…it might be just one arm on her shoulder but that doesn't mean…
"Have you eaten lunch yet? I'm going to make a turkey sandwich."
"I'll take one without the turkey."
"excuse me?"
"I'm a vegetarian."
"Oh" That's…shocking. "I'll make you a vegetable wrap."
Pictures won't answer all her questions so "How did you and Lucy meet?" Amy asked after following Alexis to the kitchen.
"She didn't tell you?" Alexis asked, taking a tomato, lettuce, avocado and a few other things out of the refrigerator.
"She never told me about your relationship."
"Kristin.". Amy. Amy. Amy. "Amy…we don't have a relationship. We're just friends."
"Okay. So how did you two meet?"
There was a reason to hide it from her but not anymore so she told Amy the first time she saw Lucy in the café to the moment they met in Ashley's birthday party. No need to tell her about the kidnapping if she doesn't already know and no harm in telling her that she found out it wasn't a coincidence a year later.
"So what do you do…for a career, I mean."
"She didn't tell you?"
"She didn't tell me anything about you except that you're Ashley's sister, Michael's daughter, Kristin's friend…and now…I know why." Looks like Lucy hasn't talk to her otherwise Alexis wouldn't have a look of confusion mixed with surprise.
"They're back."
Amy has more questions but what she heard so far is enough for her to know what type of person Alexis is, not shy and very courageous.
"Kristin!" Ashley called out from the living room.
"Ashley…" Amy bent down to receive the hug. It's not difficult to pretend, Ashley is as adorable as Lucy said.
"they said you don't remember me, is that true?"
"That's why I came, so you can help me remember. Will you help me?"
"how?"
"Well, all you have to do is tell me everything that we used to do together. Okay?" Meeting Ashley for the first time, she can already see why Kristin became so attached to this family. "Now go wash your hands." Like Lucy said, Ashley adores Kristin. As for Michel, Lucy didn't say much about him other than he's a good man, unlike his father.
"How are you feeling?" Michael asked, holding the urge to give her a hug since it's inappropriate.
"Good."
"Any more headaches?" Michel said in a concerned voice.
"no" His concern for a friend seems normal but the picture she saw earlier clearly indicates that he didn't see Kristin as just a friend. Should I ask?
"Is everything okay?" Getting an unexpected visit surprised him. The reason he asked is because she's not wearing her ring. "Does she know you're here?"
"She knows."
That's good to know. It means they're getting along. Now seeing her in person, he can't help thinking back to that day; what would have happened if he had gone with her to the hospital. He had wanted to apologize in person numerous times but was told it wasn't the right time. Now he can. "I'm so sorry."
It is his fault. None of this would happen if he didn't just leave that day. If he wants forgiveness, then she can't give it. If she can remember what she lost, then maybe she can. Now all she can say is. "For what?"
"Lunch is ready." Alexis said.
If he wants to continue with the conversation, she would let him know how Lucy feels but he should already know how she feels. Since Ashley is here, it wouldn't be appropriate to continue. Besides, there are other ways to find out what she wants to know. Ashley is a great source. She didn't even have to ask. Ashley told her everything she needs to know. Movies, zoos, parks, shopping almost every weekend with just the three of them are beyond a babysitter's job. That look Michel had was a clear sign of embarrassment.
"Do you remember this one?" Ashley pointed to a picture of three of them with the giraffe in the background.
"No. What happened?" More pictures but this time, stories behind the pictures are included.
"This woman took a picture of us. She thought you were my mother."
Can't blame anyone for thinking that but she is surprised to hear that Ashley wanted her to be. "Oh Ashley…I…"
"I know I know. You can't because it would be silly, because then Alexis has to call you mother, that's just too weird."
"That would be weird." Amy chuckled along with Ashley whom she found to be very intelligent like Lucy said. "But Ashley, it's not because of that. It's because your father and I are friends. I love you and Alexis and your father. But that kind of love is not the same as your father has for your mother. Do you understand?"
"I know. It's like Grandma loves Grandpa."
"Right."
"It's like Prince Charming loves Cinderella.
"Right."
"It's like Alexis loves Keira."
"Right. Wait…what?" Isn't she too young to know about this type of relationship?
"Do you remember Keira?"
There's no need for Ashley to know. What she would like to know is "Does Keira love Alexis?"
"mhm…but not in that way…you know…like I love you…that kind of way…"
"How do you know?"
"Because Keira never comes over, if you love someone, wouldn't you want to see her all the time? It's like Papa. He wants to see you all the time."
"oh" Makes sense, surprising though for someone her age to notice. It's time to change the subject. "Tell me about..."
"Ashley…"
Well, that's rude. No knock, just barge in. What's the emergency?
"What are you doing?" Alexis asked. Clearly they're looking at pictures but that's not what she wants to know. Just a moment ago while talking to her father downstairs , it just dawned on her that she had completely forgot to remind Ashley not to bring up the kiss. He doesn't think that Ashley will but she does. Who knows what she's going to say?
Amy was about to ask what's wrong before Ashley interrupted with another idea. Pictures didn't work so what makes her think that…Ohh…she can sing…
Taking glances between both of them, Alexis can't tell from the look on their faces. Amy seems to be very focused, listening to Ashley's singing. Maybe she didn't. Let's just make sure she won't. Alexis took a seat on the bed and did the same as Amy, paying attention to Ashley.
"I…misssss…youuuuu."
"Ashley, that's beautiful. Did you sing that to me before?" Sounds familiar so it confused her when Ashley said no. But just because Ashley didn't doesn't mean she didn't hear it from someone else. Surprisingly, Ashley knew the answer. "Concert?" A concert with thousands of screaming fans isn't difficult to picture since she went to one before. Picturing herself sitting next to Kat isn't either since she knows what Kat looks like from a video chat. Everywhere would be dark except for the stage. Music would be so loud, it would be impossible for the eardrums not to feel the vibration of the sound waves. There would be dancers, guitarists, a drummer, and large displays to allow those sitting in the far end from the stage to see. Fans would be cheering, screaming, whistling, clapping, waiting for her to appear. "she's…blonde… she's sad…tears…quiet…why is she wearing glasses? Wait…wait!" What just happened? All she did was closed her eyes and tried to picture the atmosphere of the concert where she heard that song before with Kat who never told her about.
"That's weird. She doesn't wear glasses." Ashley said.
"not her, it's…" When did it happened? Since Ashley doesn't know about Lucy, it would be better to say "it's not clear…"
"You remember?" Alexis said.
"Just a little." It seems that Ashley is more happy than she is. She's jumping with joy. They're just random images so she can't be sure when she saw Lucy with glasses on but she is certain of one thing. It wasn't appropriate to ask in front of Ashley so she waited until she left for piano classes with Michel. There's no better time to ask than now, just the two of them alone in the living room. "So…you two kissed. What was that about?"
"She…told you?" Alexis asked, surprised that Ashley again did.
As smart as Ashley appears to be and as logical as her reason is to let her know that Lucy doesn't love Alexis, there has to be a reason for her to know how her sister feels about Lucy. All it takes is just one simple question. She couldn't ask in front of Alexis so she waited until they're alone. Like Lucy said, Ashley loves Kristin and listens to her too.
"I didn't know that you two were together then…you broke up with her before she left to Venice." That's important, this is too. "It was me. I kissed her."
As detail as Scud was when he told her about what happened to her, he didn't mention this. That's because he wasn't there. Janet wasn't either. Alexis was, so was Ashley and Michel. Now putting the pieces together, she can guess when the kiss occurred and why without asking Alexis. There are two possibilities but most likely, it happened before Lucy left to rescue her, not after. "So how did she get me back?"
"She didn't tell you?" Alexis asked, confused as to why Lucy didn't until she heard that it was Scud who told her about it. Doesn't Scud know? He wasn't there. Maybe he doesn't. Regardless, she feels it's important for Amy to know what Lucy did to save her and what her former boss did. "She knew you were kidnapped. She used you to capture her."
Amy understood why Alexis would be angry, but as a former DEBS agent, she also understands why her former boss would do that. Many have tried but failed to capture the former notorious criminal leader. However, she is surprised to learn that Michel was also in the warehouse because all Scud said was Lucy revealed her identity to rescue her. Why was Michel there? Who better to answer this question than Michel himself.
After Michel came back from dropping Ashley off, he too is surprised to learn that Amy didn't know about the details of the rescue.
"Michel, you're not telling us everything. Why?" His explanation is detailed. It makes sense too but there were obvious signs that showed he's hiding something. It was his eye movement bouncing between her and Alexis who also noticed.
"Is it me? I'm not a kid anymore. I can take it."
"Alexis, if I tell you exactly what happened, you're going to have nightmares."
"I want to know."
Amy waited. If Michel still insists, she would've pulled him aside to talk privately. His reason for being there made sense. For Lucy to reveal her own identity also made sense until she heard about Anthony whom she has never heard of until now. She can also understand why Lucy had to agree to the fight so what is Michel hiding?
"She didn't knock him out. He…fainted."
Okay, so what's so secretive about that?
"Alexis, you're going to have nightmares if I tell you, I did."
"Did she kill him?" Amy asked.
"What? Nnno…" Michel said, surprised with the way she asked as if she wouldn't be surprised if Lucy did.
"Then did she break his arm, his leg?" No weapons were allowed so...Ohh…that look of surprise means yes? Not surprising but she can understand why Michel wouldn't want Alexis to know. Anyone who has never seen that type of situation would have nightmares. "Is that all?" That might be or might not be since Michel didn't say and instead explained why Lucy had to.
"It was a warning, she warned them not to touch you…and you…"
"She's Lucy Diamond. That's one of the things she's known for."
"What do you mean by that? She did it for us. She did it to save us. She's not heartless. She's not cold blooded." Alexis said, expecting Amy to be grateful not talk about her savior in that way.
Lucy Diamond is known for protecting her own and getting revenge. That's what Amy wants to say but something else came out of her mouth instead. "Alexis, do you know who she is?"
"I know who she used to be. She's not like that anymore. She's changed."
"So you're saying that if a person killed another person previously, we should forgive that person because she's changed?"
"Did she? Did she kill anyone?" Whether she did or not, it wouldn't change how I feel.
Michel remained in his seat while looking up at both of them. This not the outcome he's expecting. Amy has a point. But without Lucy, he and his family wouldn't be here. So whatever Lucy did before, he would do anything to protect her in return. If she can just remember…
"She said she didn't." But just because she said she didn't doesn't mean she didn't.
"I believe her."
Why am I not surprised. "Alexis, she might not have killed anyone directly, but she did…indirectly. Illegal arms-running, smuggling, gambling, diamond theft, bank robbery…she did all of that…the guns she sold, do you think they were used for protection only? People died from those guns."
"Stop it! Why are you like this? You knew about that…you forgave her…Kristin knew about that…and she forgave her…so why can't you see that she's changed? Why can't you forgive her?"
She still loves her. No matter what I say, she will still love her. Coming here was helpful; she got what she came for. It would be better to leave now before it leads to a bigger argument. "I have to go." She learned a lot, so much so that makes her wonder why Scud intentionally left out some of the information, important information. Who's Anthony?
"Kristin…Amy…" Michel immediately corrected himself. "we understand your point. But we…owe our lives to her, she didn't have to risk her life to save us but she did, she didn't have to save Nadia, someone whom she doesn't even know, but she did. If you can remember how much she loves you, what she did for you, how much you love her, what you would do for her, you'd know how we feel."
Calmer than before, Alexis doesn't feel the need to apologize for her behavior a moment ago but does feel the need to say one more thing. "Just remember, you knew who she was before you lost your memory and you still fell in love with her. Give yourself time…see who she is now. Don't…leave her…because if you do, when your memory comes back, she might not be there for you."
Alexis's method of persuasion reminded her of her own mother who always talked about the future to get her point across. Who knows what will happen in the future? After leaving the Couric's house, Amy needed to be alone so she ordered herself a strawberry smoothie in a café, sat near the window to think about what she just learned. She understood why Alexis and Michel would feel that way; Lucy Diamond is no longer the same person. It's not that she can't let her past be the past, it's because she doesn't know how to face her, how to love her when she doesn't feel that way. I was a DEBS agent. What did she do to make me fall in love with her? Why did I fall in love with her? "Why did I want to kiss her? I'm not gay. Doesn't make any sense." According to Janet, she was the one who interrupted their 'almost' kiss. There's no reason for Janet to lie but did she made a mistake? An 'almost' kiss isn't a kiss, it could be something else. Why would I want to kiss her? To try to escape; that would've made sense if only Janet didn't say she was having a good time with Scud, if only Janet didn't say that they weren't forced to stay even though they were forced at gunpoint to go. So why did I? "Not now." Getting a call at this moment, she let Janet know where she is so they're not worried but also let them know where and when to meet since she's not in the mood to talk to anyone just yet. Of course, they disapprove so she allowed them to pick her up from the café but rejected their plan of going anywhere else besides the mall since she thought of something to buy. After a few hours of shopping, everyone agree that it's time for dinner except for Janet who seems to have more energy than all of them when it comes to shopping.
Dinner has been ordered and arrived. Her empty stomach has been partially filled so it's time to talk about what she learned. This might not be the right place but she can't wait any longer either. "So…why didn't you tell me about Michel?" She takes a bite of the carrot while waiting for an answer. Need more clarification? "Why didn't you tell me he loves Kristin."
"Kristin doesn't, I mean, you don't."
She wasn't expecting Janet to answer but since she did…"How do you know? Did she tell you that? Did she tell you she went to the zoo, the park, the movies with him and Ashley, how he had his arm around her when they took a picture? Did she tell you what they did when they're alone? Did she tell you how she seduced him to get his trust?"
"She didn't…You didn't." Lucy immediately responded after understanding her concern.
"I wouldn't know that, would I? I wouldn't know what Kristin was willing to do to accomplish her assignment, would I?"
There is a reason for not telling her but it's not a good one now that she knows what Amy is thinking of. "I'm sorry. I should've told you." Lucy admitted the mistake and explained that she didn't because she didn't want her to feel awkward every time they meet. That's why she didn't allow Michel to see her or talk to her. Kristin might not have seduced him but she did take advantage of his feelings for her to gain his trust. The other reason for not telling her is because "nothing happened."
It's good to know that nothing did. Amy is not sure how she would feel if something did happened. Sleeping with her, she can accept that but if it's with Michel, she's not sure what she would do. What would she do? Thinking about situations that didn't happen is a waste of time. Next question. "So…why didn't you tell me about Alexis?" The reason is obvious but she would like to see if she's right.
"We didn't think it's important. Alexis is just a friend. She doesn't love her."
What's up with Janet? Why is she answering again when the question is not directed to her? Whatever. "I think that's important. You need to tell me every single detail. It might help me remember. I learned so much from Ashley…" Seeing all of them opening their eyes in surprise, she repeated again. "Yes Ashley, she told me so much, I remember something."
"What?"
This time, it's not just Janet. All of them responded at the same time. Should I ask her about the kiss? What will she say? She probably would say that Alexis caught her by surprise. Since Alexis admitted, there's no point in asking about it.
"I remember...the song."
"What song?" Janet immediately asked.
"I remember…seeing you…at the concert. What were you doing there?" It might be from somewhere else so let's see what she says.
Oh geez. Why would she remember that? "We were there to see the concert. Scud likes her." Lucy turned to Scud, expecting him to say ...
"Yea, I like her."
"Who?" Janet asked and finally understood after Scud explained. "Oh…I like her too. She's really talented. We should go see her next time." Janet then asked which song did she remembered since she can't remember anything else. "Oh, I love that song. That's a very touching song."
Amy agrees. If Ashley didn't sing the entire song, she wouldn't have remembered. She doesn't know the name of the song either if not for Ashley. …Scud likes her…huh…That's believable. What about you? "Michel also told me what you did at the warehouse."
Why did he tell her that? What did he tell her?
"He said you broke that guy's leg and..."
"I had to…to protect you and them. There was no other choice."
"I understand."
Ohh… So what's the point of the question? "You…don't think…I was…too cruel."
"If you killed him, then yes. To deal with those type of people, you have to use that method…talking certainly wouldn't help. You'd know better than anyone."
I would know better than anyone. I was trying to protect you.
"What did you do?" Janet again is confused. After getting an explanation from Scud, she understood why he had to whisper into her ear. "You…broke his leg?" Janet whispered, noticing that Lucy is taking one bite after another rather than looking at the one sitting in front of her, clearly offended by the comment Amy just made.
"I broke his hand too for spiking my drink." Lucy said without looking at anyone else but her dinner plate.
"What did he put in your drink?" Janet asked but didn't get an answer so she turned to Scud who shrugged.
Lucy put down her utensils then took a sip of water before wiping her mouth while aware that everyone is waiting for her to respond. "Maybe…I shouldn't have done that…maybe I should have let him keep his hand so that he can continue drugging women, maybe I should just asked him nicely to stop doing that…because then people wouldn't think I'm like them." Lucy stood up and pushed her chair in. "Scud, I'll take a taxi home." She had planned on taking Amy to somewhere special, but she's no longer in the mood.
Scud doesn't blame her for leaving. That comment hurt him as well, but Amy isn't herself so he doesn't blame her either but she's wrong in thinking that they're like the others. They used to be criminals but there were a lot of things they didn't do: drugs, prostitution, pornography, human trafficking.
"Was she drugged? Did she get hurt?" Janet asked in a concerned voice.
Spiked means drugged? Amy didn't think of that even though she heard Lucy's reason. Now hearing Janet's concern, she too can picture the outcome of being drugged. Young girls being drugged and raped by those they know happens way too often but in this case, by a bartender because she didn't show interest? That's rare but it doesn't surprise her. He did deserved it.
"She was."
Janet covered her mouth in shock. Horrible thoughts instantly filled her mind until Scud explained that she didn't get seriously hurt, but got dizzy from it.
"If she was hurt, do you think that's all she would do to him?" Seeing both of them nodding, he's glad to see that they understand especially Amy. Now does she think that guy deserved to die? Does she know what happened to Alexis? Letting her know that Alexis almost got sexually assaulted would justify Lucy's action. "Amy, she did what she had to do."
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that. I don't know why I said that." It's true. That was unintentional. It just came out. Amy took her phone out and called Lucy with the intention to apologize but as expected, the call went to voice mail so she apologized by text instead.
"She'll be okay." Scud said after taking a looking at the time. "We have to go. It's almost time."
"Time for what?" Amy asked.
"You'll see."
Janet found herself in the dark again. She has no clue either until they arrived to the destination. It's dark alright, it's high too. This isn't the first time she took a ride in the Cupid Capsule but the view of the lighted city of London never ceases to amaze her. It's Amy's first time though.
"This is really beautiful." Amy said, then takes a bite of the chocolate.
"Does this bring back any memories?" Scud asked. It's Lucy's idea . He got the hint to proceed with the plan without her.
"No."
"Close your eyes and try."
"Janet, just tell me. Did something happen here?" Keeping her eyes closed worked somewhat hours ago so she did as told since Janet insists. Picturing herself in the Cupid capsule is easy. She's currently in one. No lights, a hostess standing at the other end, a bottle of champagne, a box of chocolate, a magnificent view of the city, and Lucy…what would she be doing? …the same thing, looking at the view. "nothing…there's nothing…"
"Picture her behind you…" Janet suggested.
Behind me? What is she doing behind… "…wait…Did she...proposed to me…here?" The image appeared and disappeared so quickly, she only saw the position Lucy was in, kneeling on one knee, holding a sparkling object in one hand.
"You remember!" Janet clapped her hands with joy.
"She planned it for a long time." Scud said, remembering the times they've been here to test his gadget to block the cctv signal.
"Did she say yes?"
"Of course."
Of course. Listening to Janet describe that moment of the proposal, she can picture how happy Kristin was but she can't remember or feel what it's like. "Did they take any pictures?" She never asked and now knows why there aren't any wedding pictures after Janet's explanation. Even if there were, it probably won't help.
"Amy, you didn't want a wedding so…"
"You mean, Kristin doesn't want a wedding."
"you're Kristin." Janet said.
"Am I? She loves her. That's why she proposed to her."
"No, Amy." Knowing where this is leading to, Scud felt the need to interrupt. "She was planning on proposing to you after you graduate. But you disappeared before that…She didn't tell me how. But I saw her…when we were living in Barcelona…she drew a big heart on the beach…I had no idea what she was doing then, but now I know."
"I knew it!" Janet can't resist.
"So she was planning on using the same method to propose to me and Kristin…if there is a beach near here?"
"umm…yesss…" Scud responded with uncertainty since the one who asked is looking at him with a bit of confusion mixed with irritation.
"um…Scud…that's not right…" Janet said.
"Whyyy?" Why is Janet giving me the eye-roll? "What?"
"Because a proposal is supposed to be special, if she planned on using the same method to propose to Kristin, that means she never got over Amy…I mean…me…then that means she thinks Kristin is me." …ohhh…Amy paused, letting her own words sink into her brain. "She thinks Kristin is…me?"
Scud is getting dizzy, it could be because of the champagne. "Amy, you are Kristin. Kristin is you."
"But at that moment, Lucy didn't know that. She never got over her. She loves Kristin because she looks like Amy." Janet tried to explain to his genius boyfriend who is not so smart at this moment. Guys just don't understand.
Shaking his head, Scud put the glass of champagne back down on the bench because he needed to clear his head since the conversation is getting too confusing.
"I understand what you two are saying…and I believe that you girls are partly right. If Kristin only had your looks…if she has the personality of a bitch, do you think Lucy would fall in love with her? NO. She wouldn't. She loves her and she loves you."
"Scud, I think you should just…" Janet gestured with her fingers sliding over her mouth. Nobody likes to hear their lover falling for someone else.
"It took her 3 years to finally find someone she could love. It's because she never got over you. I have to keep telling her, to convince her, that you, the Amy I know, wouldn't want you to be alone because you love her. I had to persuade her to go on blind dates but none of them worked out, no matter how good looking, how nice they are. Kristin is like you in a lot of ways…but she knows that you are you…and Kristin is Kristin." Understand? Can't tell from their blank expression. "Do you understand what I'm trying to say?"
"I know. I know." Janet said while raising her hand. "If…for example…that we're not together and I still love you…and I meet somebody else who looks like you, there are going to be moments where I would think of you because he reminds me of you…but it doesn't mean that I don't love him."
"yes." Scud turned to Amy to see if she gets it.
Frowning in confusion, Amy glanced at each of them while wondering how the conversation about the proposal led to this. "Scud, if you proposed to Janet and brought her a ring, she said yes, then you guys later get a divorce, then you found someone else and propose to her, would you buy the same kind of ring to propose to her?"
Before Scud could respond, Janet raised her hand again. "She didn't do that. I know. I saw the receipt. She bought the ring the same day she proposed." Janet said, nodding vigorously to assure the taller blonde.
"that is exactly my point…she proposed to Kristin…not me…she loves her…" Amy turned her focus back on the view.
"Ammy…" Scud wanted to say something but was told not to by Janet.
"Amy, everything is going to be okay. Your memory is slowly coming back…and when you get them all back, you and her will be like before."
"Janet, I know who I am. Didn't you say I fell in love with her that same night she kidnapped me?"
Janet nodded, but doesn't understand what she's trying to say.
"Why? Why did I fall for her? What is it about her that made me fall in love with her?"
"I…don't know. I…we…saw you talking and you were having so much fun with her…you let her…kiss…"
"I know. I let her kiss me. But why? I don't...feel that way. Do you understand?"
Standing in silence while listening, Scud didn't understand before but now does. Back in the days, the one whom Amy fell in love with was the leader of the criminal organization. Lucy was like the quarterback of a football team. But now, she is a nobody, a regular person living a civilian life. Things were different then. Lucy was different then. Like Janet said, Lucy has that charm, the magnetism, the mystery that captivates others. She still has all of that but her life now is simple and not as complicated, interesting or exciting as what it used to be. The one whom the former DEBS agent fell in love with is the notorious Lucy Diamond whom people were afraid of, whom many were interested in knowing, befriending or capturing, and who no longer is the same as she used to be. …Shitttt... Even if she gets all her memory back, will she get that feeling back?
But Kristin is different. Kristin fell for Keira not Lucy Diamond. Kristin wanted a peaceful life because she was tired of working as a government agent. There may be hope.
The trip to the Cupid Capsule was Lucy's idea. In a way, he is glad that she didn't go with them, otherwise he wouldn't know what Amy is thinking. The ride back home was quiet. Everyone seems to be tired. He is too. He didn't drink much knowing that he has to drive but looks like Amy did since she had eyes closed throughout the ride. Thankfully, she's not drunk but looks like someone else is.
"What the hell?" Scud said after entering the apartment. The lights were on so he was expecting Lucy to be inside but not sprawled face down on the couch with an opened bottle of champagne on the coffee table and tv on. "Lucy, Lucy…" Scud lightly shook her shoulder, then tapped her face.
"she's drunk." said Janet.
"Lucy! How much did you drink? Lucy! How much did you drink?!" Scud asked in a panic voice. "What?" He placed his ears closer to her mouth but all that he can hear are sounds of mumbling. "Okay, you're going to the hospital." Scud said as he pulled her to sit up.
"…she hates me…she hates me…"
"No she doesn't." Scud took her left arm and hung it around his shoulder while Janet did the same with her right arm.
"Where you taking me?"
"Hospital." After being pushed away, he regretted telling her. "Lucy! You have to go to the hospital." Scud tried but was once again pushed away.
"I'm fine…"
She's not drunk to the point where she can't walk, just not steadily. "How much did you drink?"
"…I'm fine…" Lucy said as she placed one hand on his shoulder to stabilize herself. "It's not going to kill me, okay?" She continued walking towards the bedroom, using the wall to support herself until she no longer can. "no!…" With her body leaning against the wall, Lucy again pushed him away with her arms when he tried to lift her up.
Scud takes a few steps back to avoid her kicks. He knew what she's upset about but found it strange that she would get herself drunk because of it. After that incident where she almost died from drinking too much, she stopped drinking entirely. Anything with alcohol, she stayed away from it. But after meeting Kristin, she started drinking again, but not so much where she would get drunk, just a small amount of alcohol.
"What are you doing?!" Janet asked when Scud suddenly raised his hand, looking as though he's about to hit her.
"I'm going to knock her out so I can take her to the hospital."
"You're going to give her a neck ache if you do that." Amy said, then walked towards Lucy. "I'm going to take you to the bedroom." Not getting any rejection, she took her arm and signaled Janet to take the other while continued telling Lucy what she wants to hear. Just don't mention the word hospital. That's all it takes to get her to stop acting like a child.
"I'll stay with her tonight." Janet said as she placed a warm towel over the Lucy's forehead.
She didn't pass out, she can still walk, she knows where she is, so Scud agreed to allow her to sleep on it.
"Can you help me?"
Amy understood. It wouldn't be comfortable wearing jeans while sleeping.
"Who would have thought that we would be taking Lucy Diamond's pants off?"
"Janetttt." Amy said as she rolled her eyes. If I could remember, I'm sure I was doing more than that.
"Sheee…hates…meee…shee…hates…" Lucy murmured, her eyes still closed.
"No she doesn't." Janet said, again and again. It would better coming from Amy but she just left to take a shower.
After Amy finished, it's Janet's turn so she took this time to wash Lucy with a warm wet towel. Should I? It would be more comfortable. Oh what the heck. It's only a bra. She unclasped, took it off from one arm first, then the other. She has no intention of washing her chest but did the areas where she felt it's appropriate, then pulled the blanket over her.
"Ammmyyyy.y.y.y…"
I did this. I did this to her. Amy covered her mouth, feeling sorry for causing this, when she noticed a tear flowing down the corner of Lucy's eye.
"…miss…you…"
Amy heard but couldn't hear the rest. Why did I say that? She did it to save me. "I'm sorry. Lucy, I'm sorry." She texted her earlier but didn't get a reply back but now…
"…sorrrryyy…"
Whatever Lucy is apologizing for, she has no idea but even if no other other words came out, she knew what Lucy wants to hear. "I don't…"
"I'm all set." Janet whispered.
"I'll stay with her." Amy just decided. After all, this is her fault so it's only right for her to take care of Lucy, not Janet. After Janet left, she continued where she left off. "I don't hate you. I just…don't know why…why would I fall in love with you? Why would I give up everything to be with you?" When she heard from Janet what she did at the Endgame, she couldn't believe it herself. What's even more shocking was that Lucy Diamond gave up her empire to be with her. "Why? Why would you give up everything to be with me?" She knew why. Lucy told her many times. Janet told her many times. Scud told her many times. But it just doesn't make sense to her. She leaned closer, looking at every inch of her face. "You…are beautiful…but I wouldn't…"
That's how she was attracted to her ex-boyfriend. His looks. But after a few dates, she found that she had no connection with him. To know somebody, it would take time so she continued to go out with him. They were both busy and she somehow let the relationship last more than a year.
"why am I attracted to you?…you're a girl…" This is what is most confusing to her. Growing up, she was never attracted to girls. Sure, she would look at anyone who's beautiful, whether it's a male or female, like any normal person would do. But having those kind of thoughts, Never. Was she ever curious to kiss a girl? Never. But now…should I? just to see what it feels like. The thought of kissing her doesn't gross her out. The thought of having made love to her…that was too much…she had to be deeply in love and married to do that.
One inch at a time, she leaned closer to those red cheeks. One kiss on the cheek was what she had in mind but she quickly realized she shouldn't have closed her eyes. Her lips somehow landed on Lucy's lips. She turned.
Covering her mouth, she immediately jerked back. Her heart pounded rapidly in fear of being caught. She nervously waited to see if Lucy noticed. Thank goodness. She didn't. Being tired herself, Amy gently slipped into the other side of the bed, then turned the lamp off. Looking up at the ceiling, she continues to think about what just happened. The kiss wasn't that bad. It's not as different as kissing her ex but if she had to choose, she would picked her; her lips are smoother. Besides, just thinking about kissing her ex makes her gag. What am I saying? That's because I don't love him. What is it about you that made me fall in love with you? Not once, but twice. She wished she knew. She wished by tomorrow, all those memories, all those feelings would come back to her. Then they can continue to live their lives where they left off. If no change then she's not sure what she would do, continue to live like this as friends not as lovers under the same roof just won't work. "I'm sorry" She leaned in, placed a light kiss on Lucy's cheek before closing her tired eyes.
