The Lion and the Unicorn Part 2
When Lacey reached the bottom of the basement stairs she could hear voices floating out from the panic room. She approached the door slowly.
"Well Cas, not for nothing, but the last person that looked at me like that...I got laid." Dean told him. Lacey rolled her eyes and opened the door. Dean stood up straighter when he saw her.
"Uh why don't you uh, go keep an eye on Adam?" Sam suggested.
"Yes, please someone else go and mind him. He's getting on my nerves. Too many questions." Lacey grumbled.
"Questions?" Dean asked.
"What are you reading, where's your family, are we related." Lacey rolled her eyes. Dean raised an eyebrow at Sam. Sam shrugged.
"We've got a house full of flight risks Dean."
"I'm not letting him do it." Dean told him flatly.
"Who, Adam? No..I'm not either."
"No, you're not getting me." Dean argued.
"Oh, no, no, no, I get you perfectly. But I'm not letting you do it either."
"That kid's not taking a bullet for me."
"Dean..."
"I'm serious. I mean think about how many people we've gotten killed Sam. Mom, Dad, Jess, Jo, Ellen. Should I keep going?"
"It's not like we pulled the trigger."
"We might as well have, I'm tired man. I'm tired of fighting who I'm supposed to be."
"Well, do you maybe think you could take half a second and stop trying to sacrifice yourself for a change? Maybe we could actually stick together."
"I don't think so."
"Why not? dean, seriously, tell me. I want to know."
"I just...I don't believe."
"In what?"
"In you. I mean I don't. I don't know whether it's gonna be demon blood or some other demon chick or what...but I do know they're gonna find a way to turn you."
"So you're saying I'm not strong enough."
"You're angry, you're self righteous. Lucifer's gonna wear you to the prom, man. It's just a matter of time."
"Don't say that to me. Not you of all people."
"I don't want to but it's the truth. And when Satan takes you over, there's gotta be someone there to fight him. And it ain't gonna be that kid, so it's gotta be me." Lacey teleported back up to Bobby's study, she'd heard enough. Sam followed her up stairs and enveloped her in a hug.
"How's he doing?" Bobby asked. Sam shook his head.
"How are you two doing?" Lacey didn't answer and Sam just shook his head again.
A little while later they were sitting in the study, helping Bobby do some research when they heard a scream from downstairs. Sam rushed off to see what was going on, when he returned he was out of breath.
"Where's Cas?" Bobby asked.
"Blown to OZ." Sam told him. "Look, I'll get Dean, he couldn't have gone too far. You guys watch Adam." Sam said, grabbing his jacket and heading out the door. Lacey sighed, looking close to tears. From the cot beside them Adam awoke with a jolt. He got to his feet.
"You okay kid?" Bobby asked.
"Yeah. I'm fine." He answered, and with a gust of wind he disappeared into thin air.
"Bobby, what do you mean Adam's gone?" Sam asked angrily. He had returned from a fruitless effort to find Dean and was not in the mood for more bad news.
"Should I say it in Spanish?"
"He's gone how? Why didn't one of you stop him? What the hell!"
"Watch your tone boy. He was right in front of us and just disappeared into thin air." There was a gust of wind that blew the papers on Bobbys desk into the air. Cas was standing there with a bloody and battered Dean. Lacey put a hand to her mouth at the sight.
"The angels took Adam." Cas told them.
"What the hell happened to him?" Sam asked as he helped Cas put Dean on the bed.
"Me." Tears began to spill from Lacey's eyes and she looked away not wanting them to see.
"What do you mean the angels took Adam? You branded his ribs didn't you?" Bobby asked.
"Yes. Adam must have tipped them."
"How?"
"I don't know. Maybe in a dream."
"Where would they have taken him?"
Lacey sat on the edge of the bed in the panic room, Dean was laid out on the bed and handcuffed to the frame. Cas had already healed him. Dean began to wake up slowly, wincing as he raised his head.
"Hey." Lacey said softly.
"Hey." he replied, sitting up next to her and tugging on the cuffs. They sat there in silence for a moment.
"I'm sorry." Dean told her.
"For what?"
"For putting you through this. It's not something you should have to deal with. You deserve better." Lacey looked down at her hands.
"I care about you a lot Dean. I know we haven't known each other that long, so it's not my place to tell you what to do..." She trailed off. "If you want my opinion, we always seem to come up with something, so you shouldn't give up hope. Not yet." Dean studied her for a moment. She looked like she'd been crying. He reached out and traced the line of her jaw with his finger. She looked up at him through heavy lashes. He lent forward and kissed her, he felt her shudder and melt against him, he deepened the kiss, his tongue tracing her lower lip asking for entrance, which she granted. There was a sound of coughing coming from the door. The two of them broke apart and found Sam standing in the door leaning against the frame with his arms crossed, a smile played across his feature.
"So...how you feeling?" He asked Dean.
"Word to the wise: don't piss off the nerd angels. So how's it going?"
"Adam's gone. The angels have him."
"Where?"
"The room where they took you."
"You sure?" Sam nodded.
"Cas did a re-con."
"And?"
"And the place is crawling with mooks. Basically a no shot in hell, hail Mary kind of thing."
"Ah, so the are you going to do?"
"For starters...I'm bringing you with."
"Excuse me? Dean stared at him. Sam unlocked the cuffs.
"There are too many of them. We can't do it alone. And uh, you're pretty much the only game in town, besides Lacey."
"Isn't that a bad idea?"
"Cas and Bobby think so. I'm not so sure."
"Well they're right. Cause either it's a trap to get me there to make me say yes, or it's not a trap and I'm gonna say yes anyway. And I will. I'll do it. Fair warning." Lacey slumped a little in her seat.
"No, you won't. When push shoves you'll make the right call."
"You know if tables were turned, I'd let you rot in here. Hell, I have let you rot in here."
"Yeah well, I guess I'm not that smart."
"I don't get it. Sam, why are you doing this?"
"Because... you're still my big brother."
"Where the hell are we?" Dean asked. Cas had transported them to a warehouse.
"Van Nuys, California."
"Where's the beautiful room?"
"In there." Cas said, nodding towards the factory.
"The beautiful room is in an abandoned muffler factory in Van Nuys, California?"
"Where'd you think it was?"
"I don't know, Jupiter? A blade of grass? Not Van Nuys."
"Tell me again why you don't just grab Adam and shazam the hell out of there?" Sam interrupted them.
"Because there are at least five angels in there."
"So? You're fast." Dean told him.
"They're faster." Cas removed his tie and wrapped it around his hand. "I'll clear them out. You two grab the boy. This is our only chance."
"Whoa, wait." Dean said, putting a hand out to stop him. "You're gonna take on five angels?"
"Yes."
"Isn't that suicide?"
"Maybe it is. But then I won't have to watch you fail. I'm sorry Dean. I don't have the same faith in you that Sam does." He proceeded to pull a box cutter out of the pocket of his trench coat.
"What the hell are you gonna do with that?" Sam asked.
Once Cas had banished himself and the other angels along with him, the three of them entered the warehouse. Dean and Lacey entered the green room while Sam waited outside. When they opened the door they spotted Adam slumped on the floor at the opposite side of the room.
"Adam. Hey, hey." Dean said helping him to his feet.
"You came for me." Adam looked surprised.
"Yeah, well, you're family." Dean told him.
"Dean it's a trap."
"I figured." They helped him towards the door but it slammed in their faces. They turned around to find Zachariah standing there.
"Did you really think it would be that easy?"
"Did you?" Sam appeared behind Zachariah wielding an angel sword. Zachariah turned around, grabbed him and threw him across the room where he crashed into a screen.
"Sam!" Dean shouted. Lacey rushed over to help him to his feet.
"You know what I've learned from this experience Dean? Patience." Zachariah waved his hand and Adam doubled over, coughing up blood.
"Adam? Let him go you son of a bitch."
"I mean, I thought I was downsized for sure. And for us, a firing...pretty damn literal! But I should have trusted the boss man. It's all playing out like he said. You, me, the abomination and your hemorrhaging brothers." Zachariah waved his hand at Sam and he too began coughing up blood.
"You're finally ready right?" Dean looked at Sam and Adam, his gaze finally landing on Lacey, his eyes meeting hers.
"You know there's no other choice. There's never been a choice."
"Stop it. Stop it right now!" Dean barked.
"In exchange for what?"
"Damn it Zachariah. Stop it, please. I'll do it."
"I'm sorry. What was that?"
"Okay, yes. The answer is yes."
"Dean!" Sam shouted.
"Do you hear me? Call Michael down, you bastard!" Lacey looked at him, her eyes conveying so much pain.
"How do I know you're not lying?" Zachariah looked at him suspiciously.
"Do I look like I'm lying?" Zachariah studied him for a moment before beginning to summon Michael.
"Zodiredo noco aberamage nazodpesade. He's coming." Dean looked over at Sam and Lacey and winked at them. Lacey felt relief wash over her.
"Of course, I have a few conditions." Zachariah turned back to look at him.
"What?"
"There's a few people whose safety you have to guarantee before I say yes."
"Sure, fine. Make a list."
"But most of all... Michael can't have me until he disintegrates you."
"What did you say?"
"I said...before Michael gets one piece of this sweet ass..." He grinned at Lacey who blushed and smiled at him. "...he has to turn you into a piece of charcoal."
"You really think Michael's gonna go for that?"
"Who's more important to him now? You or me?"
"You listen to me. You are nothing but a maggot inside a worms ass. Do you know who I am...after I deliver you to Michael?"
"Expendable." Dean told him.
"Michael's not gonna kill me." Zachariah told him defiantly.
"Maybe not. But I am." Dean lunged forward and stabbed Zachariah through the jaw. Dean stumbled backwards as bright white light errupted from Zachariah. There was a loud high pitched noise that signaled that Michael was on his way. Dean grabbed hold of Adam.
"Can you walk?"
"Yeah."
"Come on." Dean headed over to Sam and Lacey. "Come on, move it!" He said, ushering them along. The three of them ran out of the door but before Adam could get through it slammed behind them. Dean tried to open the door but the handle burned white hot, they could see the white light spreading throughout the room.
"Dean, help! Dean!" Adam shouted from within the room.
"Hold on! We'll get you out! Just hold on. Adam! Can you hear me?" There was no reply. The white light began to fade. Dean tried the handle again and managed to get the door open.
"Adam?" He called. The green room had become nothing more than an abandoned office.
They drove through the night, heading back to Bobby's. Lacey was curled up fast asleep in the back seat.
"You think Adam's okay?" Sam asked.
"Doubt it. Cas either. But we'll get 'em."
"So..."
"So what?"
"I saw your eyes. You were totally rocking the yes back there. So what changed your mind?"
"Honestly. The damnedest thing. I mean the world's ending. The walls are coming down on us, and I look over at you and Lacey and all I can think about is "that stupid son of a bitch brought me here." I just didn't want to let you down." Dean glanced in the rear view mirror at Lacey.
"You didn't. You almost did. But you didn't."
"I owe you an apology."
"No, man. No you don't."
"Just...let me say this. I don't know if it's being a big brother or what, but to me, you've always been this snot nosed kid that I've had to keep on the straight and narrow. I think we both know that that's not you anymore. I mean, hell if you're grown up enough to find faith in me... the least I can do is return the favour. So screw destiny, right in the face. I say we take the fight to them and do it our way."
"Sounds good." Sam nodded.
