Chapter 35: Unsettling realizations

"Speech"

'Thoughts'

General Pov

Roy woke once again to an unbearable pounding in his head. His back also ached with a stiffness he didn't remember having before falling asleep last night. He attempted to sit up but fell back with a thud, his arms too weak to hold him up. Roy laid still were he was and attempted to concentrate on his surroundings. That's when he noticed he wasn't lying on a bed as he previously thought. He was on a hard surface that had a slightly fuzzy feel. 'A carpeted floor maybe,' he thought. 'But why am I on the floor?' Roy carefully opened his eyes slightly, something that was hard to do, due to the pounding in his head. His vision was blurry and dark, large shadows came in and out of view. Roy's head gave a throb of pain causing him to shut his eyes. He then noticed the sounds of things talking and moving around him.

He concentrated on the noises. "Ro- Roy."

A voice repeated in his ear, the sound was muffled as if Roy was underwater. The voice grew louder.

"Roy, please. Roy."

Then someone started to shake him. It grabbed his shoulders and shook frantically. Roy attempted to open his eyes again, this time there was a shadow of a person over him. They were shouting his name, and shaking his shoulder. Wetness fell from the shadow onto Roy's face. 'Tears,' Roy thought. Roy blinked a couple times, each time his vision clearing more and more. Till finally the hysterical crying form of Riza was in front of him.

Roy was lying on the carpeted floor of Ed's room, with Riza half bent over Roy's body. She was crying, her shoulders shaking from the force of her sobs. When Riza saw that Roy was finally awake she got him into a sitting position and hugged him furiously. She gripped his shirt hard as she cried into his shoulder. Roy sat in shock of the situation, he awkwardly hugged his crying wife, unsure of what was happening.

He looked around the room. A couple police officers occupied the room, examining the scene like a crime had been committed there. There was broken glass all over the floor from the smashed window and broken bulbs from lights in the room. Some furniture was knocked over, the blankets on the bed thrown around the room. There was a large lantern that lit the room for the officers to see the room. To Roy it looked like a tornado had come through the place. 'But what has really happened.' He thought. He looked to the floor and saw a piece of paper face down near his legs. He bent over and picked it up, holding it behind his wife's head to see it. It was a drawing, a drawing of Roy and a small gold haired and gold eyes boy.

'ED.'

Roy quickly looked around the room but said boy was nowhere to be found. Everything that had happened, just hours ago, came back to Roy like a tidal wave of memories. A strange man had come into their home and Roy wasn't able to do anything to protect his family. Now he understood why Riza was crying in his arms, why police were in his home. This was a crime scene, the crime was kidnapping, and Ed was the victim.

Roy sat on the living room couch with Riza and Al at his side. He was holding an icepack to his throbbing skull with his right hand, thanks to the chief of police. He was currently sitting across from the family, with a pad of paper and pencil in hand. There was one more person in the room, Maes Hughes. After receiving a phone from a very frantic call from Alphonse, Hughes came rushing over arriving just before the police had. Now five peoples at in the living room, tired, four with somber faces, and one police officer unable to bring himself to ask the first question.

The man finally asked after a couple minutes of silence. "Tell me what happened, from the moment you heard the noise."

Riza and Al sat silently, unable to respond. Roy was the one to speak. "The three of us were in the kitchen, we just finished eating supper, when I heard a loud scream from upstairs." Roy shifted the ice pack to his other hand, his right was getting cold. "I ran up the stairs, followed closely by my wife. Al stayed downstairs while we went to see what happened."

"And what did you see when you got upstairs?"

Roy frowned deeply, he bared his teeth furiously. "A strange guy was attacking my son. He had him by the arms and Ed was fighting to get loose."

The officer wrote on the pad of paper and nodded. "Then what happened?"

"My wife went to help Ed but the intruder tripped her and she fell." Roy attentively put his hand on his wife's arm. Riza had silent tears in her eyes, she looked at the officer, "I hit my head when I fell, and it made me too dizzy to get back up. It was then that the man knocked Edward unconscious."

The officer wrote something else down, and nodded. He looked to Roy, "And how did you hit your head?"

Roy rubbed the soreness on his head, "After Ed was knocked unconscious I went to help, but the intruder managed to get me to the ground and kicked me in the head. Then he left with Ed in his arms out the window. That's the last thing I remember before falling unconscious."

"Where you able to see the intruder at all? Any details that could help to identify him?"

Roy shook his head, "It was too dark, and the light was broken. I couldn't see him."

"Did the intruder speak at all, to you or to Ed at the time?"

Roy shook his head as well. He ignored the look Riza gave him at that action. The police officer sighed, "It's not going to be easy to find out who took your son, especially if you didn't see him or hear him."

"You can find him right?" Riza asked worriedly.

The officer stood up from his seat. "Mam, we will do everything we can, but for now we need you to stay calm and call if you have any additional information ok?"

The family nodded. The officer shook Roy's hand and apologized for what had happened and with final goodbyes left the home.

Riza turned to Al and rubbed his back, "Al why don't you take black Hayate and go get some rest. You can sleep in our room ok." Al nodded and with the dog got up and went to his parent's room for some shut eye. As soon as Al left Riza turned to her husband quickly with a scowl on her face. "Why did you lie to the police officer?"

Hughes's eyes opened wide in shock and had gasped. "What did you lie about?"

Riza frowned, "He lied about the intruder talking. He talked to you when he knocked you to the floor. Why didn't you just tell the officer about that, why Roy?"

Maes got up from his seat and walked to Roy, "Roy you should have said something, that could be the only thing that helped get Ed back, why would you keep that from the police?"

Roy sighed, "I couldn't, OK. I can't allow them to get involved, not after knowing-"

"Knowing what?" Riza asked.

"That guy, I've heard him before, seen him before." Roy looked up at Maes and Riza. "He was there when I was in the car crash."

Maes stood in shock while Riza gasped in shock and sat down heavily with a hand over her mouth. "But witnesses say they never saw anyone at the scene. You're telling me that you saw someone." Maes was the one to speak.

Roy nodded, "Just before I blanked out, I saw someone approach me, he said something about taking me out. That I was in the way. That I was in the way of his plan." He said questionably.

Maes sat back down across from Roy, "What do you mean, what plan?"

Roy shook his head, "I don't know, he just said I was in the way of their plan, that he needed me out of the way. He didn't say anything else."

Riza looked to Roy, "Wait, you said 'their plan' this time. Could there be more than one person behind the accident?"

Roy thought for a moment, "That's right he said 'we' like there was someone else in on it. Now this guy has Ed and-" Roy stopped and froze on the couch.

"Roy you ok, you were about to say something, what is it?" Maes asked worriedly.

Roy didn't respond, instead he launched himself off the couch and up the stairs. Again faster than anyone thought possible with crutches. He ran into his study and began throwing things about. Maes and Riza followed him in and watched as he tossed office supplies around.

"Roy, what are you looking for, what's wrong?" Riza asked. She was afraid of what was wrong with her husband.

Roy went to the closet of his study and with a sound of triumph began pulling out boxes of files and notes from within. Roy began rummaging inside and pulled out hand notes and journals. "I knew I had seen this guy from somewhere, I'm so stupid." He pulled out a folder and opened it. Maes got closer and kneeled down on the floor with Roy. "Just before the guy left with Ed, I saw his face with the light form the hallway. I recognized him but I didn't remember where. Then just now I did." Roy pulled out an old photo from the folder. He looked at and then showed it to Maes and Riza. In the photo was a boy older than Ed. He had golden hair and golden eyes, just like Ed but with little differences from age.

Maes took the photo, "Who is this?"

Roy frowned, "That's Hohenheim's first son, before Ed, his name is Marcus. He died years ago before Hohenheim met Trisha."

Maes frowned, "If he's dead then he can't be the person who took Ed. Maybe he just looked similar."

Roy shook his head, "No, I know who I saw, it was him. I don't know how, but it was Marcus." Roy sat still for a moment. "It's the only thing that makes sense. Hohenheim escapes jail, his supposedly dead son taking Ed."

Riza shook her head, "ROY, a person doesn't come back to life, it wasn't Marcus." She yelled.

"Unless-"

Roy and Riza turned to Maes who had spoken. "What, unless what?" Roy asked.

"Roy that day you called me, to look up someone. The day I got shot, it was a woman called Dante right?"

Roy looked on in disbelief, "You remember, you remember that day?"

Maes shook his head, "Just bits and pieces, but I remember something from that file you sent me to look up. The day Hohenheim's wife disappeared, Dante, they discovered that Marcus's body was missing from its grave."

Riza looked in confusion, "You mean dug up and taken?"

Maes nodded his head, "Yeah, they never found it after just like Dante. What if, what if Hohenheim was trying to use human transmutation to bring him back? After all Dante disappeared, he could have used her for material to bring him back."

Roy shook his head, "No, it's impossible to bring back someone once they are dead. He couldn't have."

"But you just said that you saw this guy take your son, someone who is dead but not., and Dante is gone without a trace." Maes questioned Roy.

Roy stared in shock, 'Maes is right, he was dead but I saw him.' He thought, "So he succeeded, he brought back his son. But then why did Hohenheim go to Risembool? Why not run away with his son, who is now alive?"

Maes looked at Roy "You're the alchemist, why would he do the things he did?"

Roy thought and rubbed the temple of his head, "Maybe, maybe the transmutation wasn't complete. What if Marcus isn't completely human."

Maes nodded in agreement, "Then Hohenheim would keep it under wraps and find a way to complete the transmutation." Roy and Maes both nodded their head in agreement.

"You guys are forgetting something," Riza interrupted the two men. "What does any of this have to do with Ed?"

Roy looked at her wife, his head was starting to hurt with all this thinking. But then again the answer was obvious. "Because Ed is Hohenheim's real son, he would be the best sacrifice for the transmutation to work. Ed and Marcus share almost the same DNA. That's what he was trying to do that day in Risembool. He was going to transmute Ed to turn Marcus completely human. Just like with his wife so many years ago."

OMFG! Things are happening and Roy has finally figured it out. Or has he! HAHA. The plot it thickening and the getting closer to a climax. Stay tuned to find out what happens next. :D
