Right hi guys :) this chapter is a bit of a cross over with the reboot star treks. Spock prime
It was purely curiosity that had led him to their files. His McCoy would have made some snide remark about curiosity and his Jim would have laughed at them both. But because of him they never would. If he had been quicker in reaching Romulus then Nero would never had chased him through the storm and the Romulan would never have attacked the Kelvin, killing George Kirk. He had James Kirk's file on the desk before him. Some aspects were virtually identical to those of Spock's own Jim. A member of the Tarus 5, lived in Iowa, a weakness for beautiful women. Others though, they had been caused by Spock and Nero. His mother remarried to an abusive man who threatened Jim's life many times, he was reluctant to join Starfleet because of his father's fate, he didn't make captain until after the Nero incident. All because of Spock's mistake.
He had affected them all as well. Leonard McCoy for one. The doctor here is much younger than his doctor and almost twice as bitter. His wife left him for another man, an engineer who had survived the Kelvin and rescued several men whilst McCoy was struggling through medical school. If Spock hadn't been late the man would have never become a hero in Jocelyn's eyes and therefore superior to her husband. Spock knew that they would have broken off eventually anyway but in a less painful way that would leave McCoy with less resentment and more sharp humour.
Even his younger counterpart had been affected. His mother, the lady Amanda, had perished in Nero' s later attack on Vulcan. Young Spock had watched his mother fall into the abyss, a vision that Spock knew haunted him still.
Amanda's death also affected the youngest crew member. Pavel Chekov here is almost a completely different person to the enthusiastic Russian boy Spock knew. For a start he is a good 5 years younger than he was in Spock's time. Spock's Jim was weary of having a 22 year old man 6 months out of the academy in charge of navigation let alone a 17 year old boy. Their Chekov was a certified genius. His Chekov was as quick as a whip and excelled everyone's expectations and had a keen mind for maths and science but he was often overlooked. In retrospect Chekov had always been a genius but everyone just accepted it instead of referencing it in nicknames. But Amanda's death, and here Spock put his head in his hands, had shook the boy dangerously. It had been a shaking Russian that Spock had happened upon in one of his walks around the ship. The boy had been curled up in the corner of an empty observation deck. When Spock made his presence know the boy had leapt up and stood to attention wiping away tears. He had taken one look at Spock before dissolving back into apologies and tears as if expecting him to exact revenge on him like his younger counterpart did on a provocative Jim. Spock had attempted to sooth him only to have Chekov pass out from emotional stress. Spock glanced at his clock. Chekov would be in therapy now to help him to stop blaming himself for the death of a woman he never knew. That took his thoughts onto Hikaru Sulu. The fierce friendship between the man and Chekov now seems to be a workplace friendship instead. Mostly though Sulu seems unchanged if not slightly more reckless, only proven by the drill mission. His undying skill at piloting the Enterprise holds no bounds and for that Spock is glad. However in this universe Sulu only received his position by the fluke chance of his superior having lung worm and not by special request of Kirk himself. But Spock can live with that.
Lieutenant Uhura is a dangerous woman. Even his Uhura was a force to be reckoned with but wasn't quite as, well aloof as this Uhura. Not to mention her relationship with Spock's counterpart. Spock wished them both well but still remained doubtful that such a fiery woman could ever be truly happy with someone not used to sharing emotion. To him the match of Uhura and Montgomery Scott was more logical but who knows what differences Spock has caused in the fabric of time and reality? Montgomery Scott was still the same ingenious Scott's man although he was as skinny now as a rake. He seems under more stress in this universe, more likely to find fault with his work.
He sighed. It was all his fault.
