Your Turn
2030 - Julia and Ben's first child, Jenna (they're 28 & 30)
"Hi Steve," Ben greeted him when he picked him up from the airport. Ben had come home early to surprise Julia, which worked out perfectly since she was due any day now with their first baby. They had found out a few months ago that they were going to have a girl, deciding to name her Jenna after Ben's mother. Jack was at the McGarrett home with Julia now, neither of them knowing about the surprise; Alexia was in at work.
"Thanks for picking me up," Ben said appreciatively.
"No problem," Steve nodded understandingly. "Not many better feelings than getting to surprise your wife." Ben nodded in agreement as Steve's cell phone started ringing. "Hello?"
"Dad, where are you?!" Jack asked quickly, the twenty year old sounding like he was panicking.
"Ah, I just picked up Danny," Steve lied. "What's going on Jack?" he asked in concern.
"Jules is having the baby!" Jack continued to freak out. "I have no idea what to do."
"Jules is in labor?" Steve snapped and Ben nearly jumped out of his seat. "Where is she?"
"Downstairs waiting for me," Jack explained. "She had a bag upstairs she needed or something..." Julia had been staying at her parents' house for the last few weeks since she was about to go into labor and Ben wasn't home. Jack was home from school for summer break when this was all happening.
"Ok, Jack," Steve said calmly. "You can't freak out like this in front of your sister, ok? I want you to drive her to the hospital calmly, and let your mother know when you get there."
"Ok dad," Jack nodded, heading down the stairs now. "Jules wants to talk to you."
"Dad?!" Julia said.
"I'm here Jules," Steve promised. "I'm on my way to the hospital now."
"Can you see if you can track down Ben? Please?" Julia was asking. "Call someone you know or-"
"I'll find him Jules, don't worry," Steve promised, hanging up the phone.
"Sneaky," Ben commented uneasily, though Steve didn't pick up on it right away.
"How happy is she going to be to see you, huh?" Steve smiled, looking over at his son in law as they pulled out into traffic. "Whoa, you ok Ben?" His face lost a lot of color and he looked like he was going to be sick.
"Can we just get to Julia?" Ben was asking. Steve nodded, driving faster and putting his lights on so people would get out of his way. "Are you allowed to do that?"
"Are you ok Ben?" Steve asked again, ignoring Ben's question.
"God, the baby is here," Ben rubbed his forehead. "And I have no idea what I'm doing." He motioned to him. "You and Lex make it look so easy, but I haven't even been around the last few months-"
"It was not always easy," Steve assured him, continuing to weave through traffic. "I didn't even get to see Julia till she was two weeks old. Did you know that?"
"No," Ben shook his head.
"I remember the first time I saw her," Steve said, smiling fondly at the memory. "She was so tiny, I thought I'd break her trying to pick her up, or drop her or something, I-"
"Danny was right, you give the worst pep talks," Ben half joked. "And can you pay attention to one thing?" Steve's driving was making him nervous especially since he wasn't overly focused.
"Now you sound like Danny," Steve joked back. "My point is, I was so terrified going in there to meet her for the first time, and then I picked her up and that all went away." He parked in front of the hospital. "Ready?"
"Yeah," Ben nodded, following Steve into the hospital. They found Alexia who had only been upstairs once to see Julia, directing them to her room where Jack was waiting with her. Walking down the hall, they could hear them a few rooms down.
"Ow, ow, ow! Jules!" Jack was complaining. She was holding his hand when a contraction hit.
"I'm not hurting you that bad Jack!" Julia snapped back at him, shoving his shoulder.
"Hey," Ben said, coming into the room with Steve.
"I am so happy to see you!" Jack said, getting up and hugging Ben.
"Hey, c'mon," Steve laughed, nudging his son as he let go of Ben. Then again, at twenty, he probably would have been pretty traumatized if he was the one responsible for his sister in labor.
"Daddy, you found him," Julia said appreciatively.
"We have some really good timing," Ben agreed, going to sit next to her, taking her hand.
2035 - Lucy and Jessie's son, Mark (both are thirty)
"Mr. M?" Jessie said nervously as Steve answered the phone.
He and Lucy were living in Seattle currently, they had been for a few years. Lucy did just get a great job offer in Chicago though and they were preparing to move after the baby was born, naming him after Alexia's father. The news of the move and some recent job stresses though was enough to send Steve right to the edge of a heart attack. He was at the hospital now, with Alexia having going out to talk with Jack and Alyssa about his condition.
"Are you ok?" Jessie asked first.
"Yeah, Jessie, I'm gonna be fine," Steve assured him. He was lucky, his condition had been mild, but he was going to have to start taking it easy. "I'm hoping you're calling me with some news on my grandson though," Steve smiled.
"Is Mrs. M around?" Jessie asked now. Steve didn't know how he didn't notice it before, the shakiness in Jessie's voice. "I really need to talk to her, I-"
"She went out, what's going on?" Steve asked worriedly. Naturally, he just had a heart attack and he felt like he might have another one. "Are Lucy and the baby ok?"
"I don't know," Jessie said, tearing up but he fought them off. "They said something about the baby's heart rate and that they had to get him out now, they rushed Lucy back to surgery, they won't even let me back there. Something about her bleeding, I don't know..."
"LEX!" Steve called out, knowing she would know more about this then him. "Jessie," he turned back to the phone. "It's going to be fine. I know you and I know Lucy. You're going to have one really tough...hard headed kid, ok? He's going to be fine."
"I don't think I can do this Mr. M," Jessie admitted, some tears spilling over. He could lose his baby and his wife all in one swing; life wasn't fair.
"Yeah, you can Jessie," Steve encouraged him, Alexia coming back now. "I've seen you do some amazing things kid, go through some really scary stuff and-"
"No offense, but I'd take those drug dealers again over this," Jessie said, wiping at his eyes.
"Trust me, I would too," Steve agreed. "But everything is going to be fine, and you're going to be an amazing dad, ok? Here." He put the phone on speaker. "Ask Mrs. M. Have I ever told her things were going to be ok and they weren't?"
"He hasn't," Alexia promised, taking the phone but kept it on speaker. "What's going on honey?"
"Mark's heart rate went down," Jessie explained to her. "They took Lucy back for this emergency surgery, I haven't been able to talk to any one yet."
"Ok, Jessie, I know this is really scary," Alexia assured him. "But we see patients like this a lot, and I'm guessing the hospital there does procedures like this even more since they're much bigger. They are trained to handle this and there isn't a curve ball they haven't prepared for. All right?"
"Hold on," Jessie said, a nurse coming out to him.
"Mr. Scott?" the McGarretts could hear her saying. "I just wanted to let you know the surgery went perfectly. We had to give your wife a blood transfusion and take her to recovery, but she's a trooper," she said lightly. Hurricane Lucy. "And your son is too," she continued. "Do you want to see him?"
"Yes," Jessie said quickly.
"We'll call you back Jessie!" Steve called before hanging up the phone.
2040 - Jack and Alyssa's twin boys, Joseph and Samuel (Joey and Sammy) (both are thirty)
Steve woke up late that night to banging on the front door of the house. He looked over at Alexia, both exchanging a confused look before he went to investigate. Alexia followed close behind, both noticing Jack's car in the driveway.
"Jack?" Steve asked in confusion, seeing his son standing there holding his three year old daughter Katie in her pajamas. "What's going on?"
"I need," Jack was saying, his head not all straight. "Can you and mom watch Katie, please? I'm not...I don't wanna drop her off and run but-"
"Mommy's having the babies," Katie said sleepily as Jack passed her to Alexia.
"Is she?" Alexia asked enthusiastically and the toddler nodded, yawning. "Let's get you to bed, maybe by the time you wake up you'll be a big sister!" she said, taking Katie upstairs to one of the girls' old rooms. She nodded at Jack for Steve to talk to him.
"Where's Alyssa?" Steve asked Jack.
"I took her to the hospital first," Jack explained. "They said it could be awhile, so she asked if I could drop Katie off." Steve nodded, opening the door for him to come inside. "I gotta get back dad, I-"
"Just a minute," Steve assured him and Jack obliged him, coming inside. "Ya know," Steve commented as they sat on the couch together. "When Jenna was born, I thought Ben might snap he was freaking out. He got better though by the time Steven and Chelsea came along." He shrugged. "Jessie had every reason to be freaking out about Mark, but I definitely thought when Katie was born you were going to be my best first time dad speech." He paused, smiling. "And you gave me nothing."
"I wasn't freaked out about Katie," Jack said like it was obvious. "I had been around Julia and Lucy's kids, I'd taken care of babies for eight years."
"So, why are these babies freaking you out so badly?" Steve asked.
"Because I'm out numbered!" Jack said and Steve kept from laughing. "There was one of them but now there's going to be three of them dad. Three."
"Uh huh," Steve nodded as Jack got up to pace. "And...how many kids did your mother and I have?"
"I know," Jack said in exasperation. "But they're two new babies and a three year old. And let's be honest dad, how many times did I do something stupid and mom said you should never let your kids out number you?"
"She was kidding Jack," Steve said, laughing now.
"Most of the time," Alexia teased, coming back downstairs after tucking Katie in. "What are you so worried about honey?"
"What if Alyssa goes to Portland to see her sister," Jack said. "And it's me and three kids that are three and under?" He held up his hands. "I have two arms mom and three children."
"You can always call your dad," Alexia smirked. "He got the hang of it eventually."
"The house was torn apart whenever you came home!" Jack said to his mother. "No offense dad."
"None taken," Steve nodded. "But, the chaos is half the fun. Trust me."
"Ok," Jack said, taking a breath for what felt like the first time since Alyssa had gone into labor. "I really need to get back." His dad nodded, his parents both seeing him out.
"You're not alone in this," Steve assured him. "We're here, Julia and Ben are here, Lucy and Jessie will be moving back home in a few weeks. You'll be fine Jack."
"Thanks guys," Jack said appreciatively before heading back to the hospital.
