Rubbing at her eyes underneath her glasses and letting out a grumble, Sophie tilted her head back against the back of the couch, scrolling down the page she was browsing on her laptop.
"What's up?" asked Sian, making her way out of the kitchen and ruffling Sophie's hair over the back of the sofa.
"There's nothing out there that doesn't look like a fucking crack den." groaned Sophie, closing the page she was viewing and clicking impatiently on to the next one.
Sian smiled sympathetically, making her way round the sofa and slumping down beside the brunette, "You know you can stay here as long as you need Soph … and you never know, you might be able to go back to the flat eventually."
Snorting out a sarcastic laugh, Sophie shook her head, "Not likely."
"All I'm saying is … there's no need to wind yourself up." Sian leant across and squeezed Sophie's shoulder reassuringly, "I'm not gonna kick you to the kerb any time soon."
Sophie smiled gratefully, "I know, and I appreciate it. But I can't just move in here … so it'll be a load off my mind if I can find somewhere to live sooner rather than later."
Turning her head towards the bedroom as she heard a noise, Sian nodded up the hallway, "Your phone's ringing."
Slamming the lid of her laptop shut, Sophie jumped up from the sofa and hurried off to retrieve her phone, not wanting to miss the call on the off chance it was one of the letting agents she'd been in contact with.
Finally making it in to the bedroom, Sophie hastily grabbed her phone and raised it to her ear, not bothering to check the caller id in a bid to answer it as quickly as possible.
"Hello?"
"Hi babes!"
Sophie rolled her eyes as her sister's voice blared through the speaker, holding the phone against her ear as she turned and made her way back down the hallway towards the living room.
"Alright Rosie." sighed Sophie, not sure she had the energy for her sister today.
"Well nice to speak to you too little sis, don't sound too excited to hear from me."
Removing her glasses from her face, Sophie clipped them on to the front of her t shirt, "Sorry, not in the best mood."
"Lady trouble?" teased Rosie.
Sophie rubbed at her eyes, "Something like that."
"This sounds juicy." stated Rosie excitedly, "Good job I'm going to be there to get all the goss."
"What!?" blurted out Sophie.
Rosie giggled, "I'm on my way up to see my little sister. Thought I could stay with you for a bit."
"Rosie!" shouted Sophie, her raised voice catching Sian's attention who turned on the sofa to shoot her a questioning look, "You can't just invite yourself up here! You didn't think to call first?"
"Well I'm calling now." stated Rosie nonchalantly, obviously seeing no problem with what she'd done.
"Yeah when you're already on your way!" snapped Sophie, unable to quite believe what her sister could be like sometimes, "Where are you now?"
"I'm on the train. I'll be getting in to Manchester in about half an hour."
Sophie shook her head in disbelief, "Rosie!"
"Oh my god, what?"
"You can't stay with me." stated Sophie simply.
Still watching with interest from the sofa, Sian frowned as she listened to Sophie's side of the conversation. She couldn't be sure who it was the brunette was actually talking to but it appeared that whoever it was, they seemed intent on spending time with Sophie, who in return was far from happy about it.
"Well thanks a lot Sophie." snapped Rosie, "Never mind that we hardly get to see each other or that I'm your sister."
Sophie let out a long sigh, raking a hand through her hair, "Look Rosie, it's not that I don't want to see you cause I do. But it's just not a good time for me … I'm in between flats at the moment an-"
"What?" interrupted Rosie.
"I'm in between flats." repeated Sophie, "And I'm staying with a … friend."
Glancing over at the sofa, Sophie locked eyes with Sian who cocked an eyebrow at the brunette's last sentence, now even more curious as to who it was she was talking to. Not wanting to make Sian feel insecure or paranoid unnecessarily, Sophie gestured at the phone that was still pressed against her ear and mouthed the words "It's my sister."
"Well why?" asked Rosie, her interest on what was going on with her sister now at its peak as she began to detect some interesting gossip, "What was wrong with your last flat?"
"Nothing was wrong with it Rosie." sighed Sophie, really not wanting to get into this conversation, "Look it's just … some stuff has happened and I can't go back to the flat right now. So I'm sorry but if you're coming up here you're gonna have to get a hotel or something because I have nowhere to put you up."
"Oi!"
Looking up at the sound of Sian's voice, Sophie frowned, "What?"
"You can't make your sister stay in a hotel." returned Sian getting up from the sofa and making her way over to the brunette.
"What am I supposed to do, she just invited herself."
"What?" asked Rosie, now thoroughly confused as to who Sophie was speaking to.
Sophie sighed, focusing her attention back on her telephone conversation, "I wasn't talking to you."
"Well gee thanks." snapped Rosie, "First you tell me to get lost and now you can't even be bothered to hold a conversation with me."
"I didn't tell you to get lost." argued Sophie, "It's not my fault you took it upon yourself to come up here without so much as a courtesy call. I've got personal stuff going on … This is a really bad time for me an-"
"Sophie!" interrupted Sian again, giving the brunette an unimpressed look as she stepped closer, "She can stay here."
Sophie rolled her eyes, "No she can't."
"Yes she can." ordered Sian, "It's fine."
"I don't know who that is speaking but I can hear what they're saying and I like them." stated Rosie, instantly perking up.
Rubbing at her temples and beginning to feel exasperated, Sophie shook her head, "Rosie this is so fucking typical of you ... I don't hear from you in weeks and then you just turn up uninvited. This isn't my flat … you can't spring a visit on me like this … like I said, I have stuff going on."
"Listen babes, I'd love to discuss this more but my battery is running seriously low and I'm gonna need it to phone a taxi when I get there. Tell your friend thanks and text me the address. I'll see you in an hour. Mwah." blowing an exaggerated kiss down the phone, that was the last Rosie said as the line went dead.
"Unbelievable." muttered Sophie, slipping her phone in to her pocket before looking up at Sian. "You don't have to do this."
Sian rolled her eyes, "It's fine Soph."
"She's a liability."
"She's your sister." corrected Sian, "Look I really don't mind putting her up for a couple of days. I spoke to my housemate yesterday to check in and he's not back until after new year. She can use his room."
Sophie sighed, "That's not the point … she can't just turn up out of the blue."
"Well she has."
"I don't want her butting her nose in my business." argued Sophie, "I have enough on my plate right now, what with Laura and … having to find a flat and … you."
Folding her arms across her chest, Sian gave Sophie an unimpressed look, "Well thanks, didn't realise I was such a hassle."
"You know I didn't mean it like that." returned Sophie, "Just the last thing I need is hurricane Rosie."
"Well unlucky cause from the looks of things you don't have a choice." shrugged Sian, "Now come on, you're helping me change the sheets on Jordan's bed … you just know they're gonna be gross."
Sophie grumbled, "Oh come on, I thought being a lesbian meant I didn't have to deal with disgusting man stuff."
"You can thank your sister when she gets here." Sian gripped Sophie's shoulders and turned her on the spot before giving her a gentle shove in the back towards the bedroom, "And text her the address."
Roughly forty-five minutes later, both girls were settled back on the sofa waiting for Rosie's imminent arrival. Sophie still couldn't believe the audacity of her sister just phoning out of the blue and expecting to be given somewhere to stay. Then again, it wasn't exactly surprising behaviour. Sophie had been looking forward to as much alone time with Sian as possible, making the most of being off university for the next couple of weeks before the semester started again. Sian only worked a few nights a week and that meant the rest of the time would be all there's, preferably spent in bed. Since her falling out with Laura, Sophie felt like she'd been in a constant bad mood, only made worse when she reminded herself she only had herself to blame. The one thing that seemed to make her feel better was Sian and now the brunette feared her sister's interference in her life was only going to sour her mood further. Of course Sophie loved her sister and she disliked the fact they didn't get to spend much time together anymore. Since Rosie's modelling career had taken off, the older sibling had moved down to London to focus on her work. Consequently, the sisters didn't get to see each other much which Sophie had to admit, did disappoint her somewhat. It seemed a lifetime ago that they'd lived together with their parents, bickering and winding each other up constantly. The brunette couldn't help but look back on those days fondly, unable to stop the slight ache in her chest when she considered how broken her family now was.
Sophie wasn't allowed to get lost in her thoughts any longer as the buzzer sounded loudly through Sian's flat. Rising to her feet, Sophie let out a sigh as she trudged over to the intercom, picking up the receiver and lifting it to her ear.
"It's me babes." sang Rosie.
Pressing down on the buzzer, Sophie didn't bother to reply and placed the phone back into its holder and opened the door to the flat as she waited for her sister to ascend the stairs.
Sophie and Sian exchanged a glance across the room as they heard the elder sibling before they saw her, the sound of heels clicking along the outside corridor coupled with a suitcase being rolled along the ground.
"You could have warned me there was like twenty inches of snow on the ground here." ranted Rosie, not bothering to greet either occupant of the flat as she dumped her suitcase by the door and let out an exaggerated sigh, "I mean I'm wearing Jimmy Choos for crying out loud."
"Nice to see you too Rosie." muttered Sophie, pushing the door to the flat shut as her sister walked further in to the living room.
As if just remembering it was common courtesy to greet someone upon arrival, Rosie smiled widely, stepping closer to Sophie and planting a loud kiss on her cheek, "Hey baby sis."
Almost certain she would now be sporting a lipstick stain, Sophie rubbed at her face, "Hiya."
"Oh wow don't sound too happy to see me." mumbled Rosie dryly before doing a quick scan around the flat, her eyes settling on the blonde that was currently occupying the sofa. Turning back to her sister, Rosie gestured towards Sian, "So, this your friend then?"
Sophie nodded, "Sian, Rosie … Rosie, Sian."
Rising from the sofa, Sian smiled politely and nodded her head in acknowledgement of the new arrival. She'd known that Sophie had a sister but the brunette had never really talked about her or described her and consequently, Sian was a little lost for words by the vision that was currently in front of her. It was fair to say that the sisters didn't really look too similar. Rosie was dressed in an extremely low cut top, enabling that her assets were on show for the world to see and on top of that, Sian could only assume that the elder sibling had forgotten to put a skirt on. Compared to Sophie's more casual and reserved appearance, it appeared that Rosie did not share her sister's dress sense and seemed to think that less was more.
"Nice to meet you babes." Rosie took a few steps further in to the room, pressing her lips to Sian's cheek and leaving a large lipstick mark much like she had done to Sophie, "And thanks for the hospitality, I mean talk about sisterly love and all that, trying to make me stay in a flamin' hotel."
Sophie rolled her eyes, "Well it's not like you warned me you were coming."
"Oh sorry I didn't realise I had to make an appointment to see my sister." returned Rosie dryly.
"You're right, I should have expected you to have all the usual regard for my personal life."
"Excuse me for thinking you might be happy to see me." muttered Rosie.
Sophie folded her arms and let out a sigh, "You know that's not what I'm saying Rosie."
Ignoring her sister's comment, Rosie turned to Sian, "Please tell me you have some wine or something babes, I'm parched."
"Rosie!" snapped Sophie, "Don't be so bloody rude."
"What?!" returned Rosie, clearly thinking she hadn't done anything wrong, "I've had to travel like two hundred miles on a sweaty train carriage to get here. I could use a drink."
Letting out an amused breath as the sisters continued to bicker, Sian made her way in to the kitchen and pulled a bottle of wine out of the fridge. She could see that despite the sisters having done nothing but argue since Rosie's arrival, the pair quite clearly had a good bond and were happy to see each other. The squabbling was obviously just playful and Sian thought it was quite cute that even through all her complaining, Sophie hadn't been able to help the small smile that had appeared on her face at being reunited with her sister. Grabbing a few glasses from the cupboard, Sian tucked the wine bottle under her arm and made her way back in to the living room to find the sisters now settled on the sofa.
"Oh my actual god, you are a life saver." stated Rosie dramatically, turning her attention away from Sophie as she saw the blonde re-entering the room with the alcohol.
Feeling somewhat uncomfortable at her sister's blatant lack of manners and sense of entitlement, Sophie looked up at Sian and frowned, "You don't have to do that Sian."
"Stop being such a kill joy Sophie." instructed Rosie, tutting at the younger brunette disapprovingly, "Sometimes I can't even believe we're related."
Realising she was in for an interesting few days, Sian simply chuckled, pouring the wine in to the three glasses, "Soph relax, it's fine."
"See, it's fine." repeated Rosie, eagerly taking one of the glasses and taking a large gulp of the liquid.
Shaking her head in despair, Sophie looked away from her sister and gave Sian an apologetic look, "I'm just sayin' … you don't have to do this, she's not your burden."
"Hey!" snapped Rosie, frowning at Sophie, "You know what, a little gratitude for me taking the time out and coming up to see you wouldn't go amiss."
"Oh you're right I'm soooo grateful for you coming up her, invading my personal life, imposing on Sian and drinking all of her wine Rosie." shot back Sophie, her words dripping with sarcasm.
Tutting at her sister again, Rosie placed her glass back down on the coffee table and turned to face Sophie, "Right come on then, what's crawled up your arse."
"What?"
"You know what." stated Rosie, raising her eyebrows expectantly, "You're in a right foul mood and I wanna know why. You said you were having a bad time – spill."
Sophie rubbed at her nose, letting out a sigh, "Don't be so nosy."
Giving her younger sibling a concerned smile, Rosie leant across and squeezed Sophie's knee, "Seriously Soph, you're my sister and I care about you. Come on … what's been going on. Why aren't you at the flat?"
"It's nothing." mumbled Sophie, not sure she really wanted to go in to it.
"Please tell me." pleaded Rosie, giving the brunette's knee another squeeze, "I wanna know what's going on with my baby sis."
"If you two want some privacy I ca-"
"It's fine." interrupted Sophie, not allowing Sian to finish her sentence, "Look … Rosie … it's just something that I've done that I'm not proud of so Laura doesn't want me back at the flat and I really don't blame her."
Studying Sophie carefully as she spoke, Rosie's eyes widened, "Did you sleep with her?!"
"God why is everything about sex with you?!" returned Sophie, "No, I didn't sleep with her."
"Well what then?"
Sophie looked over at Sian who merely shrugged in response, "Just tell her Soph, she's bound to find out."
"Tell me what?" asked Rosie, looking between the other two girls curiously, her ears pricking up even further at the sign of potentially juicy gossip.
Sophie rolled her eyes, "Do you have to sound so excited? This isn't a soap opera Rosie, it's my life."
"Oh god don't be so sensitive." scolded Rosie, slapping her sister's leg playfully, "Just tell me what you've done that's so bad."
Realising Rosie wasn't going to give up, Sophie let out a sigh and finally relented, "I slept with someone I shouldn't have."
"What? Someone she didn't approve of?" pushed Rosie, desperately wanting Sophie to just spit it out.
"You could say that." mumbled Sophie, hanging her head in shame as she went to elaborate, "Her girlfriend."
Rosie's jaw dropped, "Sophie Webster you dirty dog!"
"Don't make me feel worse about it than I already do."
"Soph …" Rosie shuffled across the sofa, wrapping an arm around her Sophie's shoulders who reluctantly allowed herself to be pulled into the embrace, "I'm not gonna make you feel bad, I'm your sister … that means I have to take your side no matter what you do."
Pulling back from Rosie's hold, Sophie offered a feeble smile in return, "Yeah well, I don't deserve anyone on my side."
"Doesn't matter what you deserve. Family comes first eh?" offered Rosie, leaning forward and taking another sip of her wine, "So let's hear it then. Details."
Sian shuffled uncomfortably in the armchair she was currently occupying. She'd been watching the conversation between the sisters, letting Sophie share whatever it was she wanted to. It seemed obvious that if the three women were going to be sharing a flat for the next few days, Rosie would inevitably find out that there was more going on between herself and Sophie than a mere friendship. However, she really didn't feel it was her place to reveal anything to Rosie and chose to let Sophie divulge as much or as little as she wanted to. Even so, she wasn't sure she wanted the brunette to go into explicit detail of her affair behind her best friend's back, sure that what Rosie had said about family sticking together wasn't going to apply to her and she would more than likely come out of the story looking like the bad guy.
"No." stated Sophie simply, shaking her head and giving her sister a serious look, "I'm not giving you all the dirty details, it's weird when you take such a keen interest in my sex life."
Rosie rolled her eyes, "For goodness sake don't be such a bore and tell me. Are you still sleeping with her?"
"I'm not getting in to this with you." Sophie folded her arms across her chest defiantly.
"You're right … I know what my sister's like. Love 'em and leave 'em, eh?"
"Rosie!" snapped Sophie, "That's not what it's like at all."
Smirking over at the younger girl, Rosie nodded her head, "So you are still sleeping with her?"
Looking up from her wine, Sophie glanced across the room at Sian to find the blonde staring right back at her. Taking a sip from her glass, Sian gave the brunette a small smile and shrugged in an attempt to signal that she didn't mind Sophie telling her sister the truth.
"Yeah …" breathed Sophie.
The exchange of looks between the two girls did not go unnoticed by Rosie, the eldest Webster more than experienced when it came to sniffing out even the smallest hint of gossip. A knowing grin tugged at her lips as she leaned across and shoved Sophie in the arm playfully, "Oh you are so transparent baby sis."
Sophie frowned, "What?"
Turning her focus to the blonde in the arm chair, Rosie raised her eyebrows and smirked, "Wouldn't have guessed you had it in you babes."
"Eh?" Sian scrunched up her forehead, utterly confused as to why Rosie's attention was now focused on her.
"You know … cheating on your girlfriend. Sleeping with my sister." explained Rosie casually.
"Oh." muttered Sian, unable to stop the blush that began to creep its way up her neck.
"Leave her alone Rosie." warned Sophie.
Rolling her eyes once again, Rosie chuckled, "Calm down Soph. I'm just sayin', she didn't look the type."
"I'm not." defended Sian, "I … we didn't … it wasn't planned."
"It never is." returned Rosie with a grin, "Trust me, I know."
Sophie scoffed, "Please, you'll jump in to bed with anything."
"Errrm excuse you!" Rosie swatted at Sophie's leg again, "Uncalled for much? Like you're any better. Your friends filled me in on enough of your antics last time I was up here."
"Well I'm not like that anymore." stated Sophie, "And don't pick on her, it was me that started it."
Rosie laughed, "Why doesn't that surprise me."
Smirking over the top of her wine glass, Sian eyed Sophie up in amusement as she scrunched up her nose at Rosie's comment, "Seems your sister knows you better than most."
Choosing to ignore both Rosie and Sian's comment, Sophie shook her head and fought the urge to smile, "Right well that's all the details you're getting from me. Yes, I slept with Sian. Yes, I'm still sleeping with her. She was Laura's girlfriend at the time and I'm not proud of myself but I couldn't help it. I'm really serious about this … I've never felt like this before."
Unable to stop herself, Rosie broke out into a smile as Sophie began to blush, "Aww babes, you're all grown up."
"Leave it out Rosie." mumbled Sophie, shuffling in embarrassment.
Taking a final gulp of her glass of wine, Rosie rose to her feet, looking between the two girls, "Right then ladies, this calls for a celebration … Where's the nearest bar?"
