I would also like to blame Tumber user, fyeah-hey-arnold-fanart, for sparking my interest in this pairing.
Mr. Hyunh realized the truth far before Arnold's teacher confronted him.
Okay, maybe 'confronted' sounded a bit negative. Hyunh had done nothing wrong after all and he had spent most of the school's family fair with Arnold and the rest of the Sunset Arms denizens, so he had no reason to doubt his suspicions on the cause behind the other man's nervousness.
"Ahem, I'm terribly sorry for pulling you aside, sir. I-I promise this won't take long! There's just something important that came up I've been meaning to share with you."
Yep, the truth shone brighter than day to Hyunh. The blush on Simmons' cheeks, the stuttering in his voice, the trembling in his hands, the sweat forming on his forehead: all of these made the older man hold back a smile, not wanting the teacher to mistake it for mockery or amusement.
"Oh? What is it?"
Mr. Simmons took a deep breath, steeling himself. It was now or never. "I'm a big fan of your music!"
That outburst took Hyunh by surprise. Not because someone liked his vocal work but due to the fact that one of those fans sought him out in particular. He preferred that alternative over the swarms of people that had refused to leave him alone during his short bout of fame, sure, but something about someone still in love with his work and willing to go so far to talk to him in person...it was heartwarming, honestly.
That feeling manifested into a soft welcoming smile as Mr. Hyunh extended a hand towards Simmons. "I am quite honored you took the time to tell me so. My name is Hyunh, Yiang Hyunh. You can call me Yiang if you like."
Just as Hyunh expected, Simmons' shaking and blushing both worsened as the younger man tried in vain to pass off as cool and collected while shaking the older fellow's hand.
"Robert!" At the undignified squeak in his voice, the teacher cleared his throat and managed a more stable countenance. "Robert Simmons. It's nice to meet you, too, Mr. Hyunh. Again, I'm sorry for surprising you like this. I haven't had a chance to meet a musical idol of mine since my college years and I do have a bit of an image to keep in front of the students so this is a bit embarrassing."
Hyunh chuckled. "That is alright. I think it was very brave of you to tell me face to face," he paused for a moment as his dark eyes trailed down, "I like your sweater, by the way."
Confusion crossed Simmons' face for a moment before he looked down as well. "Oh! This? No, this is just what I normally wear for school days. It's nothing special really."
"I do not know," Hyunh tilted his head with a thoughtful gaze, "I think it looks cute."
That. That comment revived Simmons' blush tenfold! The poor man silently wished he brought a hat with him today to cover his god-awful poker face. To compensate, he crossed his arms and averted his eyes to Hyunh's snow-white shoes, noting for the first time how they contrasted against his own black dress shoes perfectly.
'Wait, why am I focusing on that?'
"Actually, Mr. Simmons, I am glad you came to have a word with me."
The teacher jerked his head up, surprised by the question. "Y-You are?"
"Yes! Even though I am not Arnold's father, I believe his education to be very important and want to make sure he is having no problems at school. If you have the time, I would be most grateful to you for telling me how he has been doing."
Simmons deflated at the offer. "Oh goodness, I don't know. I'd be more than happy to, but I'm supposed to be chaperoning the students right now," he held his hands up, "Besides, I don't want to keep you away from your family."
The older man shook his head, having none of Simmons' attempts at opting out. "That is alright. Arnold's grandparents brought me and the boarders over as extra hands!" And also so the boarders could splurge on the cheap delicious food but Hyunh kept that detail to himself. "In fact, what if you and I chaperone together and talk at the same time?"
Huh. Simmons looked away for a moment and tapped his chin, pondering the suggestion. He risked a glance at Hyunh and once again felt heat rushing to his cheeks at the taller male's reserved yet genuine smile. Hyunh even had his hands behind his back, giving off a gentlemanly air that only coaxed the 'yes' in the teacher's throat even more.
At last, a wide thankful grin emerged on Simmons' face, bringing out dimples Hyunh would have gushed and cooed over had he less restraint. "I suppose that's doable."
Returning the beam in full, Mr. Hyunh stepped aside and bowed with a sweeping gesture of his arm as though welcoming a princess into the ball. Mr. Simmons held back a giggle before graciously taking the cue, Hyunh right behind him.
Unbeknownst to the two men, there had been an audience.
"Uh, Arnold?"
"Yeah, Gerald?"
"Did we just see Mr. Hyunh flirting with Mr. Simmons?"
"..."
"..."
"...It'd probably be best not to find out."
"Works for me."
