Jane's eyes narrowed as she set eyes on the residence Abigail Addams was said to be staying at. The idea that the authorities had actually announced where she'd been sent would have been ludicrous had she not known Mary had made a deal while still in hell. There weren't even any police there, no one to run to the girls aid. She was defenseless. Well, as defenseless as anyone who could snap a persons neck without flinching could be. Hopefully, Jeff would have followed her. If he was there with her, then this could finally be over, and she could put an end to his killing spree.
If not? Well, then Abigail would have to live a little longer, as a hostage. Oh, to have her lovers' killer at her mercy. Of course, Mary would get the first turn, considering she was the one who'd had her neck broken.
The other demon cackled, tail whipping back and fourth like a cats, the small set of wings at her back flared open. Jane glanced sideways at her, taking in her enthusiasm. She almost seemed giddy, as if the coming events were to be celebrated as something joyous, and not a dark duty that fell on them to preform. She shook her head, and watched as Mary darted past her to climb up the side of the building, leaving scratch marks behind from her claws. Jane faded into the shadows, reappearing silently in the living room just as the sound of breaking glass came from above. She paused, eyes lingering on a toy box in the corner of the room. The report hadn't said anything about children living there.
Further noise from upstairs. Mary apparently had lost any concept of stealth in the course of her transformation. A door flung open with enough force to bang against the wall, then another. Anyone asleep in that house would no longer be so.
Then the screaming started. Jane didn't recognize the voice. Must have been Julia. But where was Abigail?
She went up the stairs, following the racket. Three bedrooms, all wide open. The noise was coming from the furthest door down the hall. She checked the other two on her way. One was a kids room, complete with bunk beds, and the other was a complete mess, blankets laying on the floor, paper strewn about everywhere. She stepped through the third door, and found Mary, pinning the unfortunate woman to the floor by her neck. Mary looked up, hearing Jane come in, teeth parted in a wide smile.
"She says if Abigail isn't in her room, she doesn't know where she is."
"P-please, I don't care...w-what you do, just don't hurt the kids!"
"No children, miss! None tread here."
Jane frowned, "Where would they have gone?" Jeff hadn't started targeting children, had he? But even if he had, there would be bodies. Jeff took no prisoners. At lease, none outside of Abigail.
"I don't know! Just please, stop! I-I need to find them..."
"You're not going to be finding anyone, lovey." Mary cooed, lifting a hand. For a moment, Jane thought she was going to tear the woman's head off, as she had with several humans prier. She didn't.
She put her hand up the front of Julia's shirt.
Jane stiffened, watching the fear cross the woman's face, the realization of what Mary was planning hitting them both at once.
"Don't-don't, please, oh don't, please-"
"Mary what are you doing?" The edge was clear in her voice as she stepped closer, fingers curled into shaky fists. This wasn't Mary. Mary would never, could never.
Abigail said she'd tried to touch her before her death. Her teeth clenched, she glared at the lesser demon. Her tone dropped further. "What did you do?"
That tail thrashed as she pushed Julia's shirt up, cackling at the distressed noises she made. She didn't seem to hear Jane's protest at all.
Mary hit the wall hard. Julia's neck snapped a moment later. The body was left to lay limp on the ground as Jane approached the other, hissing, "I can't believe you!"
Those dark, soulless eyes looked back at her as the other pulled herself back to her feet, "W-why are you...? I was having fun!"
"We don't do that!"
"We can do anything we want!" Mary snarled back at her.
"She had a good reason for killing you, didn't she? You-you threatened her, didn't you?"
"She didn't want to come... I was giving her a reason to want to."
"What is wrong with you?" Jane felt sick. She shook her head, crimson filling her vision as tears filled her eyes, only to overflow and drip down her cheeks. "I gave up a level for you, so you could act like this? You're a monster."
"I'm an angel, Jane..."
"You're a demon. You're a demon, and demons are foul, evil creatures, and I s-shouldn't have expected anything better from you."
In the next moment, Mary's throat was within her grasp. Fingers clenched the soft flesh hard, cutting off her air. She struggled, she scratched, she lashed out with her tail, but Jane was stronger. When the life faded from her eyes, so too did her body's ability to keep itself together. The demon under her collapsed into powder, and Jane was left to kneel in her beloved's ashes, sobbing alone.
What had she done?
