Chapter 34
The worst feeling is when you get lost and alone, but we are too nice to do that...
-Cat
Rebecca's POV
I was dragged off, blindfolded, and put in a car before I could even struggle by an unknown person. I could hear the car door open and close before the car started and drove down a road. I could not tell who was in the car besides myself but i could feel the warmth of at least three other people besides me or the mystery driver. I sat in silence, listening for a hint of our location or who was in the vehicle with me. I could hear the barest of whispers, but was unable to identify the voice or what they said.
We drove for approximately 1.27 hours, before stopping on a dirt road. I had felt the bumps as we drove along which indicated either a badly asphalted road or a dirt road. Judging by the smell of dust and crops in the air we were likely in the country, this confirmed my guess of us driving on a dirt road.
I heard the driver get out of the car, the driver walked around to my side and helped me out. They then lead me off the road and down some hay covered trail. Behind me I could hear the others get out and follow, we walked until we go to what felt like some kind of crop. It was tall and grew in a close line.
My guide stopped and turned towards me reaching out and taking my blindfold off. I closed my eyes immediately, blinded by the sun, before blinking a few times and adjusting quickly. I took in my surroundings, I was at a farm not far from the road and in front of me was a large corn maze sign. It gave instructions for how to properly navigate the maze, without cheating and presented admission prices.
I then looked at my captors, which consisted of Spock, who had been blindfolded as well, Cat, Jim, Bones, a farmer who was being paid by Cat, and a complete stranger. I guessed that the stranger was a member of the clan, given how friendly he was towards myself and Cat. He was around the same age as me and Cat, with short dark brown hair and blue eyes. He wore a light blue button-down shirt and some dark stained blue jeans. When Cat came back over with the tickets, he introduced himself.
"Hello, I am Tom, a friend from the clan. I have gathered you here today to test you on certain skills. Today's skill is whether you can navigate the maze before you with only one other person." He began, "As we have an odd number of players, I shall join you in this challenge." He then pulled out a bag with several slips of paper inside. He pulled out two and stated "there are three teams of two, the first team is Bones and Spock, Jim and Cat are the second, leaving Rebecca and me as the last," pulling out the papers one at a time.
We split into our teams before racing into the maze. Jim and Cat were just running around randomly, while Bones was arguing with Spock as they calmly walked. Tom and me kept to the left and attempted to get to the ramp which would let us see the maze a bit better. We went deeper and deeper into the maze until we could no longer hear our friends running about and yelling. We tried to turn around but ended up taking a wrong turn leading us to a never ending twisting and turning. We walked for a long while before giving up and taking a seat on the ground.
"Obviously having me for a teammate doesn't mean victory as Cat assumed" Tom said trying to lighten the mood.
"It is peaceful at least" I offered as we sat among the tall stalks. We couldn't even see the ramp anymore, no doubt our friends had completed the maze and were waiting for us to get out. There was no service in the middle of the corn field so we would take turns calling out our friends names. Eventually we grew bored and started drawing things in the dirt and talking to entertain ourselves.
"How long do you think it will take until they find us?" Tom asked.
"I am not entirely sure, but hopefully they find us before dark." I told him.
"Until then, shall we get to know each other better?" He offered
"It would help pass the time, so yes" I replied
"First question: How long have you known Cat?" he asked
"Since my first year in highschool." answered Rebecca. She then asked "How did you learn about the clan?"
"I'm friends with Philip, we went to high school together and kept in touch since then" He explained. "How did you guys decide to call the bat Nancy?" He inquired.
"Well, Cat just had read a Nancy Drew book and thought her favorite weapon should be a baseball bat. That day she also bought a bat at the store." I related to him. Before I could ask another question, we heard voices and saw the beam of a flashlight pass over our heads. The beams drifted about before one settled on our faces.
"About time you found us, we were just about to bring out the embarrassing stories of you guys" Tom jokingly said.
"Well sorry, you two just has to find the one trail that was the furthest away" Jim sarcastically replied.
"Are you okay Rebecca? Do I need to get Nancy out and attack Tom?" Caitlin asked concerned. At the name 'Nancy', Tom shot his head around to look at her cautiously before slowly backing away and seemed ready to sprint at the slightest movement.
"I am Fine, Nancy isn't required at this time. I would like to leave" I replied looking at them expectantly.
"Well, about that…" Cat started. Tom and I just stared at her as she got nervous, eventually she just blurted out, "We kinda got lost trying to find you and Spock stayed at the entrance to keep watch for you guys. So this should be fun"
Tom and I turned to look at Jim and Bones, in the hopes that they might remember the way back. I knew it was futile since of the humans, Cat had the best memory as far as directions go. I sighed then stood up, stretching my legs a bit before turning to walk down the path where they had come from. Tom followed my lead, causing the others to copy as well.
After a few minutes, Caitlin stopped and pulled out Nancy. Tom and Bones hid behind me, while Jim just grinned as if he was expecting it.
"I have a great idea! Lets just force our way through." Caitlin explained as she began beating down stalks to make a path in the general direction of the entrance. We assisted her in this, eager to escape from the maze. After only a few minutes we were at the edge of the maze. We walked along the edge until we found the entrance and revealed ourselves to the waiting Spock. He raised his eyebrow at Cat holding Nancy and the cornstalk pieces in everyone's hair before leading us to the car and driving our weary selves to the apartment.
As it turns out, Tom is the owner of the apartment complex and has a large chain of hotels across the earth, including a few in space. The clan is full of useful people like him, so we treated him with respect and tried to assist him when he needed it. We have a major election coming up soon, and every vote counts as Cat says.
Hate mazes. Review.
