I wake up early, smiling as I look beside me. Tris is asleep with head rested in the crook of my neck. My stomach twist. She looks so young, but not in a childish way. She looks peaceful. She looks her age. I bite my lip. It isn't fair, she has gone through so much- more than most people will go in their lifetime. Tris is only seventeen. I smirk at the thought and kiss her forehead lightly. She stirs but doesn't wake and I make my way downstairs.

I hear a creak and look up. Tris stands at the top of the steps rubbing her eyes. She walks down and smiles, "hey."

When she reaches me I wrap my arms around her, "good morning. Want some breakfast?"

She nods, her gray eyes meeting mine, "as long as you made scrambled eggs."

I smile and hand her a plate full of pancakes, eggs, bacon, and a biscuit. She takes it and grins, staring at me wide eyed, "why did you make so much?"

I smirk, taking a piece of bacon off her plate, "I'm not allowed to make you breakfast?"

She laughs, shoveling a bite of pancake into her mouth, "I didn't even know you could cook!"

I grin, leaning in so my hands are on her cheeks. My lips rest on hers, "happy birthday Tris."

She pulls away, an exited light in her eyes, "how did you know? Tobias, oh my god!" she kisses me quickly and climbs in my lap.

I tuck one of her stray hairs behind her ear, "I used my amazing charm and good looks to win over the old ladies in the school office."

She smacks my chest and laughs, "shut up."

I scratch the back of my neck nervously, "oh, um… the insurance agency called yesterday while you were asleep. They said they recovered a few things from the fire," I reach into my pocket and pull out a black box, "and um this was one of them." I hand it to her and she opens it. The diamond necklace sits perfectly in its place.

Her eyes widen and she faces me, "oh my god Tobias." Her lip wobbles, "this is my moms. She gave it to me for my 12th birthday. I thought I lost it forever. Thank you." She buries her face in my shoulder and wraps her arms around my neck, "thank you so much."

I pull away and smile, "it's nothing. I just drove up and got it."

Her glossy eyes meet mine and she kisses me, hard. I react quickly, sliding my hand down her arm. I can't breathe. I pick her up and toss her on the couch. She pulls my shirt and I lay on top of her. Sliding my hands down her sides, she slips her hands underneath my shirt and feels my chest. My stomach tightens with eagerness.

"You know," she whispers, "you're not so bad. Maybe I should change my opinion on you."

I kiss her jaw, she shivers underneath me. "What opinion would that be?"

"That maybe," I kiss her throat. And then the first tattooed bird on her collarbone. And then the second. And then the third. Her breaths and heartbeat quicken. She starts speaking slower, distracted. "That maybe I should…" she sighs as I squeeze her hips. "Maybe I should keep you around as a personal chef or a housemaid. You're pretty good at both."

I laugh and bring my lips back to hers, "I'm not good at anything else?"

She takes a moment to respond, acting like she is thinking. "You are a really good kisser." Her lips part as I meet them. My tongue slides over her lip and she allows me in.

She is so strong, so powerful. She is beautiful. She is everything that I want to be. And she is mine. I close my eyes as she wraps her legs around my waist. I can tell that she is nervous though. She tries to hide her trembling fingers by gripping my shirt, but I know better. This is her fear. This is something she is deadly afraid of. And even though she has faced it, she has not conquered it.

I pull away, rolling to the side of the couch. She touches her nose to mine. We would be breathing the same air, if I could remember to breathe. "I love you Tobias."

I smile and pull her closer, "I love you so much more." She smiles. "Tris. There is um, there is one more thing."

Her brow furrows and she looks at me expectantly. "What is it?"

I stand and pull her up with me, "come on."

She frowns and takes my hand, "I hate surprises. You know that."

I smirk, "well I think it's cute when you're angry. You should know that."

She rolls her eyes, "just take me where we are going, please."

We walk to Tris's house and I open the door. Her jaw drops, "mom?" she laughs and runs toward her mother. "Mom what are you doing here?"

Natalie smiles and hugs her daughter, "happy birthday Beatrice."

"Mom," Tris laughs again, "what… how are you here? Why are you here? What?"

She pulls away and gives a faint smile, "I left. Your father was being selfish. So I decided to move here and Caleb is attending early college."

Tris frowns, "mom, I'm so sorry. I should have told you. Dad he-"

"Bea shh. Shh I know. That is why I left. Everything is fine now. Caleb is fine, I'm okay. Everything is okay." Natalie kisses her cheek.

Tris nods, "okay."

Natalie smiles again. "I have some things to take care of. I love you. Happy birthday." Tris hugs her again and Natalie walks out the door.

Tris looks at me when the door closes, "seriously, I love you so much."

I shake my head, "Tris I didn't do anything."

She rolls her eyes and steps toward me, "you do everything. You have made this the best birthday of my life and it's only eleven in the morning. Thank you. Thank you so much."

I kiss her forehead, "you're welcome, Beatrice."

She steps back, "did you just call me Beatrice?"

"Yeah. No?" I ask, her eyes skirt mine.

She laughs, "no. I like the way you say Tris. I can't explain it."

I take her hand and rub circles around her palm, "I know the feeling exactly."
