PRONE TO NIGHTMARE
A week later, Serena scowled as she sat at the kitchen counter, in their home, biting on a soft biscuit as a silver Crescent Moon flickered weakly upon her forehead before she laid her head down on the cool marble. Across the counter, her sister was seated; quietly reading from a book but Serena knew that her sister was worried. Their mother had only woken ten minutes prior, and was in the main room, setting everything up and ensuring that their guests were settled in for comfort, before Serena shivered as she remembered feeling the soft touch of energy from her aunt and both of her sisters-in-law and knew they were worried.
However, the events of the battle in the last week had only caused more concern for her family, when they learnt some of the reasons behind why Serena had wanted to keep them out of the two separate attacks. It had taken everyone cornering her at certain points, over the week in her room, to get her to let them all in, whilst she was healing from the damage of the two attacks, Natalia and Crystallina healing what they could only manage, Serena having to deal with the rest on her own terms.
"I'm sorry." Serena moaned in disbelief.
**I thought I was past having the painful nightmares, but I guess that it's returned. ** Serena sighed as she thought to herself, wincing as her knee became numb, and began to shake it. **This is not going to be fun if I'm waking everyone with my screams. **
"You nearly scared us, Serena." Suzanne stated as she looked up from her book. "Your levels were off the chart, when Drake felt it, seeing as he jumped out of bed the moment it happened."
"I know." Serena moaned as she winced.
Serena lifted her head as she heard footsteps, and she and Suzanne turned around on the chairs to catch the sound of footsteps headed into the room. Serena groaned once more and dropped her head back to the counter, as she caught who was in the door besides her mother, and hid her face. Suzanne chuckled and leaned over to pat Serena's head, in comfort, as she caught her Aunt Gaea and Darien's sisters, Vanessa and Aurora, stood in the doorway with their mother.
"Suzy, don't go there." Serena groaned from her arms.
"Aww Sere, you're no fun." Suzanne stated as she jumped off her seat.
"Suzanne, don't annoy her too much." Their mother reprimanded, as she walked into the kitchen. "Your sister is still healing from her injuries."
"Yes mother, I won't." Suzanne stated with a nod, remembering Serena's drowsiness when she first awoke. "And don't worry; I'm keeping a close eye on her."
"Sweetie, you need to rest." Vanessa stated as she walked over to the twins.
**How did it get this far? ** Vanessa thought as she looked at Serena. **How could we ignore what was happening after all this time. **
Serena looked up at the feeling of a hand running down her hair and smiled softly, as she looked up into a set of worried green eyes from the comfort of her arms. Vanessa raised an eyebrow, and Serena giggled as she wrapped her arms around Vanessa's waist and curled into her side with a small shiver, but the only worry at the moment was Serena's health and the health of the growing life that she carried within her. There were bandages wrapped around her knee and waist to ensure nothing happened with too much strain on her effort, it did not help that her cousins weren't budging on checking up on her every so often.
"Sweetie, you haven't had much sleep." Vanessa cooed as she soothed Serena. "You've been up since god knows what time, because of that nightmare."
"I don't feel like it, at least not yet." Serena muttered with a yawn, as she struggled to remain awake. "I want Darien, and then I'll sleep."
"Vanessa!" Gaea called out, a reprimand on the edge of her tone. "Remember what the others said."
"Yes mother." Vanessa stated, as she looked back to her mother with a nod. "I know that, and I'll remember."
No one had wanted to risk Serena's mood swings, knowing that she wouldn't dare return to sleep unless Darien or Drake were within her sight at all times. Unfortunately, the current stress of the situations had caused Serena's nightmares to set off only a couple of hours ago, and no one except Drake had known how to stop the painful screams. Unfortunately Cybele had been sealed shut and unable to help with controlling the nightmare from getting out of hand, within Serena, causing Drake to have to put in double effort to force the tremors away. As per Serena's earlier orders, Drake and Darien had taken the cars with their father to go and collect the Senshi and bring them over the house knowing it was now needed to explain the situation in further detail.
The events of the last week had kept them isolated from the Senshi team, following Serena turning unconscious after returning back to normal, after she had Cybele take control, once the generals had disappeared. Yet Cybele's last words had played on their mind, they knew Athena was entwined into Serena's soul, every since her marriage to Darien over 10,000 years ago but she had not made her appearance.
From the perspective of the nightmare, it had only reached five in the morning, when the screams had reached their ears and they remembered what had only followed.
From Athena's perspective, they were wondering if Serena had held her back from making her appearance or whether Athena herself, was holding back from making her appearance. It was a question they had wanted to know the answer to, only seeing the golden glow surround Serena after that battle, and the words of Cybele to hold them to care, to watch their words unless they wanted to deal with a mix of Serena's and Athena's fury combined.
**Flashback**
"Drake, what's going on?" Suzanne asked as she stepped out of her room.
She winced when a scream of pure fright reached her ears, and Drake groaned as he darted into a room further down the hallway, where Serena was sleeping. Her eyes widened when she realised it had been her sister who had screamed, and the worry on Drake's face as he had passed by earlier had proven it. Her only question, as she turned on her heel, was where was Cybele?
"Suzanne?" A sleepy voice called from behind.
Suzanne turned around to catch Aurora rubbing the sleep from her eyes, and Vanessa standing quietly next to her, but there were questions in their eyes that she could not and did not know how to answer. Suzanne shook her head and moved off down the hallway, in the opposite direction, to where Drake was with Serena and headed downstairs as another piercing scream reached their ears. Suzanne winced slightly, and heard it as Vanessa and Aurora followed behind her, before a hum of energy echoed, knowing that Gaea was only helping her daughter-in-law with the unmistakeable twinge of fright that began to echo through the bonds.
"Darien, why are you awake?" Suzanne asked as she stepped into the room.
"Suzanne?" Darien blinked as he yawned. "Oh I woke up when Drake did, if not a couple of minutes after. It's hard to sleep when the mother of my child is screaming because of a nightmare."
"Any idea what happened?" Vanessa asked as she moved to the breakfast bar.
"No." Darien stated with a shake of his head. "Apparently according to what we felt, Cybele is being blocked from helping Serena at all from the nightmare."
"How is that possible?" Suzanne asked as she took a seat. "With Cybele being the Lady of Nightmares, surely nothing should be able to block her from assisting Serena from any form of a nightmare."
Suzanne looked shocked at seeing her brother-in-law at the table dressed and ready to go out, as he placed a steaming pot of coffee on the table. Vanessa and Aurora looked shocked, as they stepped into the room behind Suzanne, before the patter of footsteps drew their attention and the four looked up. A small whisper followed by hushed words was heard as Drake stepped into the kitchen, his fingers massaging at his temple, the soft words of a female following behind him, with Serena's whimpers echoing close behind.
"Drake, what's wrong?" Darien asked as he glanced up, catching his twin entering the kitchen with a frown. "Is Serena ok?"
"I'll bring her down in a moment." Drake muttered as he walked into the kitchen. "Mum is with her, and I need ibuprofen or something to get rid of the annoying headache. Cybele's working to remove the after-effects from Serena as we speak, since that nightmare went up against her to block her from supporting Serena."
"It's in the top left hand cupboard, and drink some water with it or coffee." Darien stated, as he rolled his eyes, motioning at the steaming coffee pot. "She's frightened of sleeping, isn't she?"
"It was twice as powerful as the one she had a couple of weeks ago, Darien." Drake muttered as he gulped down a glass of water. "Instead of gripping her heart in fright, it went straight at her vitals and the bonds, unfortunately for whatever it was, it alerted us to the problem given the nature of the blood bind, and what happened over a week ago."
Suzanne, Vanessa and Aurora remained quiet as Drake downed the cup of coffee in one gulp, knowing that he would need it, especially in the approaching dawn. Darien raised a slender eyebrow as Drake nodded and left the kitchen, bounding up the stairs as quick as he could, when Serena's whimpers started to echo through his mind, and his mother's barriers began to start dropping.
**Flashback End**
When they had caught the look on Serena's face, as she came down with Drake and Gaea, it had caused worry to them but now at nine a.m. she was sitting in front of them as lively as ever. As Serena now caught a glance at the clock, she noticed that it had only been an hour since both Darien and Drake had left to collect the Senshi team with their father and breathed a small sigh.
It had been hours since she had woken screaming from the nightmare, and had broken down in Darien's arms, after being pulled out of the bedroom, by her mother-in-law and Drake, when she awoke from the nightmare. Cybele's green glow had been evident in her form and eyes when she had been brought down, but Darien had caught her when she collapsed, knowing the nightmare had nearly killed her based on the fear that echoed alongside Drake's words.
"Sweetie, you look tense." Her mother's voice snapped her out of her thoughts. "Don't overwork yourself too much."
"I'm fine, mamma." Serena breathed out, rubbing her eyes.
"Serena?" Her mother asked once more.
**I don't like this. ** Serenity thought as she looked at her eldest daughter. **She looks too exhausted to stand on her feet or remain awake, if Drake hadn't stopped it in time, I don't even want to think about what may have happened. **
Serena blinked as she snapped out of her thoughts and smiled as she looked at her mother, jumping away from the kitchen counter, and walking out of the kitchen towards the main room. The others followed closely behind, even as Serena stayed close to her mother, where her father and older brother were seated and looking over business papers. Serena bounced over, a small smile, as she looked over Aiden's shoulder at the business papers and smirked at their newest acquisition.
**What are you hiding from us, Serena? ** Suzanne thought as she glanced at her sister.
"You look tense, Suzy." Her sister's tired voice reached her ears.
"I'm fine, Serena, you know me." Suzanne stated as she glanced at her sister. "Don't worry too much."
"Suzanne?" Serenity hissed from the corner.
**She's planning something, and I know it. ** Serenity thought as she watched Suzanne shrug her shoulders.
"Girls, take a seat and have a small breather." Their father broke through before an argument could ensue. "Edward and the boys should be back shortly."
"Come and have a look, little moon." Aiden chuckled as he looked back at his little sister. "We've got another acquisition to deal with back home, and we figure that you might want to involve yourself when we return back home."
The others nodded and took a seat on the seats that were available around the area, and Suzanne could only smirk and shake her head, as she settled next to Serena. Serena rolled her eyes and laughed brightly, as she pulled her twin sister into her arms, before they both looked up at the sound of car engines pulling into the driveway outside and looked up with bright smiles.
