Chapter 34

Tessa's hands restlessly fell to her lap. She had asked Simon to come over so she could break off the romantic ties between them. He wouldn't have been someone bad to settle down with, but she had someone else in mind. A certain raven haired, wild, blue eyed boy.

The door to the library opened and Simon came in. "I'm glad you're here."

He sat down in a chair facing Tessa. "Why have me come all the sudden. Is there something wrong?"

Tessa bit her bottom lip. "Simon, I don't know if there's any way I can say this that-"

He held a hand up. "I know what you're going to say."

"You do?"

Simon nodded. "You see me as a very good friend, but you just don't like the direction it's going."

"You're all right with it?"

Simon smiled. "I'm more than fine. If I must confess, there's someone else..."

"I know, my lady's maid told me your relationship with Isabelle."

"I hope that's not why you're not seeing me anymore."

"Oh not at all," assured Tessa. "If anything, if I'm honest, there's someone else for me too."

"Who is he?"

Tessa smiled. "William, you would know him better as the dark haired Herondale."

"Oh? And how long has this been going on," asked Simon with a smile.

Tessa cringed. "It really hasn't-"

Simon stood up. "Then what are you waiting for? Go after him!"

She laughed. "Alright. And I wish you luck as you pursue Isabelle."

"The same to you."

The two shook hands before parting ways.

"Why are well all here? Whatever it is couldn't Charlotte and Henry told us later," said Jessamine.

"I haven't the slightest idea," offered Will as an explanation.

"Maybe it's about Alec," whispered Jace.

Clary gasped and put her hands over her mouth. "Maybe they found him dead!"

"Clary, don't think morbidly like that," chastised Jace.

Magnus and Lily stood in front of the entire household. "Lily and I have an announcement."

The entire staff hushed. Magnus looked down and beamed at his wife. "We're expecting."

The group clapped and shouted their congratulations. Magnus leaned down so he could kiss Lily.

Jace was running on the adrenaline from the announcement and what he was about to do. He waited until after supper when all the hubbub had died down. He kept fidgeting with the object in his pocket, waiting for Clary to show up.

"Jace? Where are you?"

"Over here," he shouted back.

Clary came into his view with a look of confusion. "What's going on?"

Jace took one of Clary's hands and held it. "I know at the beginning we didn't get along very well, but I'm glad we did. I don't know what I would do without you." He pulled the ring out of his pocket and got down on one knee. "Clary Fairchild, will you marry me?"

She smiled and held her left hand out. "Yes."

Isabelle was waiting patiently outside the Manor when she saw him come around the corner. Simon walked around the side of the building and approached her. "I-"

She slapped him across the face before he could get anything else out. "That's for not telling me about Lady Theresa."

He gave her a dazed look and she pulled him in for a kiss. She broke away from him, but only millimeters away. "That's for letting her go."

Simon smiled and went in to kiss her again.

Will wearily climbed the stairs up to his bedroom. Since Jem had died the room and always been silently waiting for him. The Lightwood brothers had their own room and Julian was almost always either with his sister, or talking with Emma. Will smiled at the thought of them getting along so well. He pushed the door open and was surprised to see the candle on the nightstand already lit. He pushed the door open all the way and was shocked.

"I know," whispered Tessa. "Let me explain."

She closed the distance between them and kissed him.

Magnus was packing his bag when he turned around to face Lily. "Do you think I'm being ridiculous?"

"No, it's your way of making sure."

"But what if it's for nothing."

"It isn't. You'll know with your own eyes that Alexander isn't in France or that Camille knows anything."

Magnus gave her a doubtful look. "You can't be so certain with that last one. Camille can be a very devious liar."

"But you can at least be sure about the first," assured Lily.

Magnus walked over to her and placed his hands on her abdomen. "Be careful while I'm gone."

She placed her hands on top of his. "I will."

He walked back over to the bag and grabbed his bag. "I don't know when I'll be back. Hopefully before the new year."

"Good luck."

Magnus left the room, determined to find answers before he came back, come hell or high water.
