A/N: Writing a character driven story using cannon characters that span 30 years in various media forms including FF is a challenge. So when a character gives a reader pause, I appreciate knowing. Like Cosmos in the last chapter, this A/N is about Prowl. For me, he's the G1 Michael Bell version (28 eps) and my memories are based off that. The FF I've read describes him differently, more stoic, logic-based, sometimes almost to the point of Vulcan-like stern behavior. I've always wondered where that came from. Out of curiosity, I've decided to revisit the G1 eps Prowl is in to help jog my memory. So, if my interpretation of Prowl is wrong I'll say something either here or in my next chapters after I've finished research. If you wish to comment, please do! Reviews or PM! Thanks!
A/N: Lastly, because this story doesn't rely on combat for tension I'm using political elements. This is tricky as I don't want to write using bias, so that's why no parties are mentioned when referring to government officials. Feel free to post comments or pm if you wish to discuss this further.
And to those who haven't reviewed but are still reading, thank you too!

Chapter 3 – Earth Campaign (Part 33) - 6 days after the Liberation of Chicago
— Washington D.C., HHS Building - NEST Facility —
After Optimus placed the Teletraan unit under its cover on the med bay counter, he strode past Ratchet and FirstAid. They were so engrossed in what they were discussing they failed to notice him leaving. Optimus smiled benignly at the distracted pair, the fact that both medics felt safe enough to focus on their assigned duties was reassuring. It was a snapshot of a future he hoped he could help provide for his people, one where they would not have to look over their shoulders constantly in fear.
When he reached the exit he turned and paused to watch the medics again, not because he wanted acknowledgement but simply to enjoy the moment. Finally with a tiny vent of air, he turned and exited the med bay knowing he could no longer put off his duties. He shut the door behind him and headed into the hangar proper.
Without glance or pause, Optimus walked past the rec room and Autobot Ops to make for the elevated human command center. He drew to a stop and lightly rested his hand on the railing to observe the activity. He didn't say anything but simply stood there to admire what years of service and cooperation had created between the humans and Cybertronians, acceptance. His spark warmed pleased that his presence hadn't provoked the usual terrified reactions most humans felt about his people these days. Instead, a few looked up and nodded at him respectfully, while others continued doing the various tasks assigned to them.
A rough audio feed emitting from one of the stations caught his attention. He noted with wry humor that he wasn't the only one, as there was a small group of humans huddled around the speakers as well. As to what was playing, Colonel Lennox snorted and answered Optimus's unvoiced query as he turned to the Prime, "Optimus! Can you hear this? Mearing's getting her a** chewed out up on the Hill today."
Optimus commented dryly, "I was wondering what had captivated your attention. I assume you're receiving this transmission from Sam? Was it his idea to open comms or yours, Colonel?
Bill walked over to the railing and leaned back against it beside Optimus's servo, focused partially on the audio and on Optimus, "It was Sam's. He's still dealing with confidence issues so he wanted us to know what was going on real-time. The problem with the audio is it's hard to understand. We could've pulled feed from CSPAN but these hearings are closed."
"Will you save the recording? I'll see if we can clean it up later." Optimus looked down at the Colonel, "We need to find a better way to communicate with one another."
Bill turned to look up at the Prime, "Yeah. And maybe something we can use on the sly too? Like what you guys have in your heads." Bill mimicked a bot activating his comms externally as he continued, "That way we could talk to each other without worrying about outside interference. We've got earpieces but our transmissions can be hacked. Do you think your people could cook up something a little more advanced? One that won't cross the lines of our non-weapon's treaty, of course."
Optimus shook his helm at the officer, "As much as it is an interesting idea, I'm not sure we can. You see the comms we possess are literally a part of our bodies. True they are technologically based but then so are we, we can upgrade our bodies with all sorts of technology, humans I'm afraid cannot."
When Bill started to speak, Optimus changed tact, "Colonel, I wished to speak to you about something."
The officer's eyebrows rose, "Shoot." Optimus moved his opened servo onto the walkway for the Colonel to hop on. Once the officer was secured, Optimus strode quickly over to his office. Once inside he placed Lennox on his desk. Bill chuckled dryly, "That bad huh?"
Optimus lowered his voice, "I hope not." The Prime paused as he chose his words with care, "Colonel, you remember how hectic the situation became after Sentinel's betrayal? The relations between your people and mine was… tense."
"That's putting it mildly," Bill muttered sarcastically.
"This tension between our peoples is still apparent and I wasn't certain whether I should reveal this information because of that. But you have always been such a staunch ally I felt not doing so was wrong. I hope you'll understand why after I explain."
Bill groaned and rubbed his face with concern. In his experience, when Optimus behaved like this it meant something serious. He tried to sound encouraging but he couldn't help a note of worry to creep into his voice, "Go on."
"Over a week ago, two units of my people arrived in system. After observing humanity's reaction post-Chicago, I believed advising anyone of their arrival would cause more harm than good. They're presently located in an abandoned Decepticon base on the Moon and are on standby awaiting further orders."
Bill crossed his arms over his chest as he digested this information, "Okay, so why tell me now?"
"As I said, it felt wrong to withhold information from an ally. I'm concerned about jeopardizing the trust we've worked so hard to forge between us," Optimus explained.
Bill nodded, "Okay, but Optimus, the JCS approved your call for your people to come, we expected them to answer."
Optimus nodded, "Yes, but knowing a message was sent is quite different than it actually being answered. I don't want you or your people to think we were moving against you."
Bill crossed his arms over his chest and frowned thoughtfully, "When you put it that way it sounds like you're saying an army has arrived. And yeah, if that's the case it's going to be a problem."
When Optimus didn't immediately respond Bill angled his head and pursed his lips, "Ah, I see, army it is then."
Then the officer started to pace, "Okay, I admit, one of you guys is intimidating enough and now there are 12 of you here. Realistically, that makes my government twitchy. Eight of you were able to free Chicago when we couldn't. But, I'd also like to think I'm a good judge of character so personally, I'm not worried about numbers."
Bill smiled, "I think the more of you here means a decrease in potential Decepticon attacks. But, then again, I'm not your average human so you're right to be concerned. The bigger problem, no pun intended, is cramped quarters and the additional cost of feeding all of you."
Optimus pulled back, it was easy for Lennox to see that he was considering his words. But it was also easy to see that something was still bothering Optimus. Finally the Prime nodded, "Space, will be a problem."
Bill's eyes narrowed as he listened carefully to the tone, "I see. Is that all Optimus?"
The Prime shook his helm, "No. One of the units is a complement of Wreckers, 7 in all and 4 mini-bots, they're similar in size to Bumblebee. That number doesn't include their shuttle, Sky Lynx who happens to be a Wrecker as well."
Bill's jaw dropped open and then closed it with a snap, "Wreckers? Please tell me you're kidding me."
Optimus shook his head.
"Great," Bill muttered sourly, "and you're telling me that one of them is big enough to carry the others around…. in space. It makes sense why you didn't want to say anything. Especially given how Mearing feels about them and now there's more? Just tell me they're different than the 'Boyos'."
Optimus made a face that simply had Bill thrusting his hand up, "Wait, don't… don't say another word. I think I'd rather not know the details. But I did notice you started with the Wreckers, I'm afraid to ask who's on the other ship. But, go on, hit me with it Prime."
Optimus blinked for a moment as he searched the web realizing the phrase was probably an idiom. When he found the reference he answered, "The crew of the second ship is the one I am more concerned about. They are a complement of femmes, females of our species and thought to be nearly extinct. One of them is… my intended. There are also two mechs, one is Sideswipe's brother. Their ship is civilian and not in any way combat capable. So I hope you can understand why I was reluctant to reveal their presence."
"Yeah, I don't blame you for not wanting to say anything." Bill's expression turned from serious to quirky smile as he attempted humor, making a show of counting on his fingers to hide his concern, "So, by my count that would make 21 of you. And yeah, you're right that's going to make for a really big stink."
"An interesting way of putting it but given the reaction by some, accurate," Optimus puffed out air that sounded of exhaustion.
Bill nodded but couldn't help but ask, "So, you people have women and Sideswipe actually has a brother. Should I be scared? But you, Optimus, I gotta admit you having a… a fiancée? Really?"
"Yes… in a way."
Bill started to pace, "Uh… okay, so uhm, you two were planning on getting married."
"Yes," Optimus hesitated as he considered explaining Cybertronian unions and then thought the better of it. Instead he said carefully, "What's more important Colonel is we need to keep them safe. If the Decepticons discover they are there, they will kill them."
"I see. So either we bring them down here or keep their presence a secret. I'd feel the same way if it was my Sarah up there. Still I gotta know, why tell me now?"
"Pressure is being brought to bear on Director Mearing as well as a sense of foreboding. It was also strongly inferred by Director Galloway that if we don't provide technological advancements in compensation we will be forced to leave. I wasn't concerned because we have no ship so asking us to leave is impossible. But, if it does leak that we do have two ships in system that attitude could change. It is possible we might be able to dissuade him if he were made aware that 4 of the arrivals are notable scientists."
"Really. Hmmm, you're right about Galloway," Bill nodded, "but I'm afraid he'd try to figure out a way to kidnap them and force them to share your technology." Bill looked up at Optimus his expression dark, "Is that why you haven't said anything, you're afraid he might do that?"
Optimus nodded, "It is a possibility. Those who support him have influence and power. But my greater fear is leaving my people unprotected. Without a ship I can't do anything to help. If they're here at least I can try. With Sky Lynx and the other ship on Earth, if they threaten us we can leave."
"And leave us with the Decepticons, great," Bill said tiredly. "Maybe this time they'll get the hint and let you stay."
Optimus nodded, "I hope. Sadly, I may have to use Galloway's desire for technology to counter the threats to remove us."
"I'm surprised you're telling me this and not Mearing."
Optimus smiled, "You misunderstand I have told Director Mearing. Given the current pressure and quantity of governmental meetings, it was essential she understand the situation and be prepared to act accordingly."
Optimus smiled, "Colonel Lennox you are also very important to us, to me, and you are in a unique position. You've been in the trenches with us and have earned all of our trust. Since our arrival, I have grown to respect you, your abilities and your observations as much as Ironhide did."
Bill shrugged and flushed slightly, "Well… Uh, thanks Optimus, I appreciate it, just as long as you know politics isn't my strong suit."
Optimus chuckled sadly, "It wasn't Ironhide's either and yet his opinions were still of great value to me."
A look of sorrow crossed Bill's face, "I'm gonna miss the big guy."
The officer paced as he collected his thoughts, "Okay, so here's my opinion. Galloway likes power and money in politics is power. One way to get that is the sale of new emerging technology, your technology, that's why he wants it. Which you've already figured out anyway. So, I think if you give him a taste of that and make him think he's got control over you, he might be happy enough to work with you."
"The thing I've found about most politicians is they like to think they're tough but they're easily frightened. You should'a seen Galloway's face the moment his chute opened up. Anyway, I think more of you here on Earth will do that, scare them I mean. So, if they panic it could go one of two ways for us."
"They either split you guys up into smaller groups or relocate all of you to a remote location. One spot, contained so if you become a threat they can use the nuclear option as a last resort. By the way, can you guys survive a nuke? No, never mind, don't tell me. We just need to make sure they're not pushed far enough to consider nukes as an option."
Bill shook his head as he tapped his finger against his chin, "To tell you the truth Optimus, I'm not sure which way they're going to go on this one."
Bill shrugged, "By the way, the embassy idea was a stroke of genius. If you can sway the public, like telling them about your fiancée and Sideswipe's brother, you know make it a reuniting family thing, it might evoke sympathy and get you guys the support you need. 'Cause if the public backs you it's likely the politicians will follow suit if only to keep their jobs."
Optimus merely hummed in agreement and was interrupted by a comm, "Excuse me Colonel. NEST Ops is comming me." He reached up and activated his helm comms, 'Optimus, go ahead.'
:'This is Ops, is Colonel Lennox still there with you?'
:'Yes.'
:'We need you both here pronto. Tell him the sh*t just hit the fan on the Hill. You two need to come up here fast and listen to what's going down.'
:'Understood, we're on our way.' Optimus rose and lowered his hand, "Ops said quote the sh*t just hit the fan."
Lennox needed no encouragement to hop onto Optimus's open servo. Without pause the mech turned and ran out of his office towards the elevated Ops center. Lennox had always wanted to know what it would be like being carried at a faster pace than a walk by one of the Cybertronians. Sam's story about L.A. had made it sound rather exciting. Now he was certain he never wanted to do this again as he bounced hard against the metal of Optimus's servo while clinging to the Prime's thumb for dear life. He was convinced there would be bruises on his bruises tonight.
When they arrived at the walkway Optimus lowered the Colonel onto the platform. The officer staggered over to the men standing by the audio station and ordered, "Report," as he rubbed his leg wincing in pain.
"Sir," the young airman turned, "they just accused Mearing of hiding more bots in a hidden base on the moon! Is that true?"
Optimus groaned softly and rubbed his forehelm, "How did they find out?" In a louder voice he asked, "Can you boost the signal?"
The young man shook his head, "No, sorry sir."
Bill turned to Optimus, "Can you do anything?"
Optimus turned, "Perhaps," and with that cryptic answer the Prime ran back into the hangar.
"Okay…?" Bill watched Optimus leave with a slightly bewildered expression and then turned, "You guys are recording this stuff, right? Good, pipe it down to the eggheads, let's see if they can hack the signal or do something so we can hear it better."
"Yes sir!"
— Capitol Hill – Select Committee on Intelligence Hearing —
Senator Snyder glared at his colleague as he leaned forward to unnecessarily holler into the microphone, "WHAT! You're saying there are more of them on the Moon and you didn't think to tell any of us that? When did learn about this?!"
The chairman banged his gavel, "Gentleman, Senator Conrad still has the floor, please withhold your comments until your allotted time."
Senator Conrad glared back, furious for being interrupted after what he thought was an excellently timed and intimidating announcement. He turned back to glower down at the four people seated in front, "What I want to know Director Mearing, is how long have you known about this and why haven't you bothered to inform us of this critical piece of information!"
The chamber was intentionally crafted to place those seated mid-point in the room at a psychological disadvantage both in location and appointment. The table itself was plain and adorned with microphones and color-coded time boxes interspersed with bottled water. No other creature comforts or amenities were provided to aid in the feeling of inferiority those seated at that table were supposed to feel when in the presence of the body positioned above them.
The focal point of this chamber was a large finely crafted wooden bulwark for the senators sit at and look down from. Similar to the feel of a medieval castle, the senatorial platform was separated from their foes by a railed and carpeted moat normally filled with reporters and camera equipment. Today that moat was empty as the details of this particular hearing were considered top secret.
Seated directly in the center position at the plain table was Director Charlotte Mearing and like a stalwart combatant, her steely gaze met the fury of the blustering senator unflinchingly. Her posture was relaxed, confident and it was obvious she was not intimidated by what many would describe as the most powerful men in America, a fact that no doubt added to the senator's ire.
Seated to her left were the ambassadors Samuel and Carly Witwicky. On her right was Director Theodore Galloway who apparently was having the time of his life as he watched his counterpart suffer what he felt were appropriately slung arrows politic. He reveled witnessing first-hand Mearing's possible fall and thought with glee that today might be that day. He was certain she had been unaware of this information and as the Director of National Intelligence it was her responsibility to know. Such a failure would not go unnoticed and unpunished.
Carly sat next to Sam and watched the proceedings outwardly calm but wary. She was concerned at this turn of events and wondered what this new information would mean going forward. As the hearing progressed she watched each senator carefully and took notes of their reactions hoping to gauge their position.
Sam, on the other hand, simply sat there with his hands clasped in front of him to keep them from betraying his nerves. He did his best to avoid glancing at his telephone and tablet, which were set in front of him on the table. He knew both were active and transmitting the hearing back to base and worried what would happen if he were caught. Criminal charges, life in prison, he thought grimly. He would from time to time use a tissue to wipe his nose, in reality he was removing the perspiration from his upper lip and chin.
The fact the devices had gotten this far was a testament to Cybertronian ingenuity. Sam glanced down at the phone and tablet knowing they had been allowed because of his insistence and after Capitol IT and security teams had thoroughly tested and then cleared them. Capitol security assumed they'd disabled any ability for the devices to send or receive communication assuming the devices were innocuous based on their common casings and shell software. However, thanks to Brain's skill, the technology underneath was pure Cybertronian. When Sam did his first test run earlier that morning he'd sent Carly a simple text, "Go Team!"
Charlotte was unaware of the enhancements to Sam's devices only because Optimus felt plausible deniability was her best defense. The fact that Sam shared that information with Colonel Lennox was surprising but understandable.
Director Mearing, however, was more focused on the senator railing at her than on anything on the table except for the timer. She smiled when Senator Conrad was forced to stop speaking after using up his time allotment. He was obviously quite impassioned as it took the chairman's repeated banging of the gavel and admonitions before he stopped, "Senator, please, your time is up. Senator…."
Once the chamber was finally under control Charlotte turned and regarded the tableau like a general looking at new recruits as she waited for the chairman to cede time for her to speak. When the timer started she began to speak, "Although it appears your knowledge predates mine, I learned of this late last night. I should like to know how you obtained this information and why you waited until now to advise us. Until then, the reason why this information was withheld was explained to me and the Autobot leader's reasoning was understandable…."
Charlotte was interrupted by Senator Snyder as he snorted in disbelief, "Understandable?!"
The gavel banged against the counter as the chairman reminded the body, "Senator Snyder, it is the Director's allotted time to speak. Please withhold your comments."
Charlotte waited patiently and when the chamber was in order she said, "Senators, the JCS authorized Optimus Prime to contact his people. Need I remind you that it was the Decepticons, not the Autobots who discovered Earth first. Despite being refugees and hunted by the Decepticons, they came to prevent the Decepticons from harming us more than they already have. Think of what would have happened to us if they hadn't? Chicago would be an example of what our entire world would look like!"
Several senators leaned back in their seats and make snorting or scoffing noises which forced the chairman to use his gavel again to settle the chamber and bring it to order. Charlotte refused to allow these outbursts to affect her poise as she waited for the chairman to indicate she could continue.
She nodded, "If it's a matter of trust, let us not forget that we asked the Autobots to leave and they did. We were lucky they survived the Decepticon attack and came back to rescue us when the Decepticons took the City of Chicago. Must I remind you that in saving us they have done so at great personal cost? Many of them were killed too. My point is we should be focused on our mutual enemy, the Decepticons. The Decepticon political stance is brutal and as a result we have lost thousands of our people. Is it wise to rebuff the only allies we have that are capable of fighting them simply because they look more like the Decepticons than they look like us?"
Senator Conrad was unconcerned that his time was used up shouted, "That's not the only reason Director and you know it!"
"I remind you Senator Conrad, Director Mearing has the floor. Please continue Director."
"Thank you Mr. Chairman," Director Mearing nodded and then regarded the whole, "Honored Senators, as representatives of your various states, many of you have for humanitarian reasons promoted or backed legislation to allow those who cross our borders illegally to have the opportunity for immunity and eventual citizenship. It is obvious all of you are cognizant of the woes these indigents suffer and how much you desire to help."
"All I ask is that you view the Autobots as refugees coming to us for humanitarian aid. They are a new minority, one whose inclusion into our society would bring us immeasurable benefit. Isn't that what you remarked about those crossing our borders, Senator Jones? How their membership into our society will be for the betterment of all?"
Senator Jones flushed in anger as answered back, "You sit there and lecture me?!"
The chairman interrupted, "Senators, I remind you again to reserve speaking until you have been granted the time to speak. Director Mearing, please continue."
Charlotte nodded as she glanced at the timer, "The leader of the Autobots is not asking for anything other than to be allowed a place to stay, for their families to be reunited…."
Senator Jones burst out in shock, "Excuse me?! Do you sit there and honestly expect us to believe they have families?! Utter nonsense! It's as believable as my toaster giving birth to baby toasters!"
The chairman interrupted again, "Senator Jones, please contain your remarks until your allotted time."
Charlotte picked up a file and held it up, "You've all read the reports. The Cybertronians are not robots, they are living biological beings which means they can have families…."
Sam did his best to hide his shock. He never expected the director to understand that about the Cybertronians and yet she apparently had. Charlotte ignored his appraisal and placed the folder back onto the table, "Out of respect for our sovereignty, Optimus Prime has had his people staged in a separate location. He is asking us to allow them to be reunited with their wives and brothers who have been separated for a long time. Yes, Senator, I am very serious."
She felt Galloway stiffen and then smirked as she added her final card before her time ran out, "Several of those Cybertronians awaiting permission to land are considered a protected class. Females who are valued scientists and engineers, whose intellectual capabilities might be used to help us solve problems we've been unable to do for ourselves. Think of it gentlemen, energy problems solved, environmental issues corrected, problems like being able to neutralize radiation, improve communications and medical sciences. All of this and more if you regard them as people, not as machines, and allow them to have a home on our shores."
Galloway pulled back, his gaze unreadable as he pondered the benefits Charlotte offered.
The silence in the room was impressive as various senators considered the weight and merit of Charlotte's words.
— HHS Facility - NEST —
Optimus ran quickly to Autobot Ops to find and collect Brains. Then returned to the elevated walkway and deposited the tiny mech on the station where the radio transmission was playing, "Colonel, I've brought Brains to assist in cleaning up the signal." The mini-con quickly connected to the audio array and made adjustments to the signal.
It didn't take long for the mini-con to adjust the equipment. When he stepped back, Charlotte's voice was heard clearly as she explained about the Autobots and the benefits of having them remain. Optimus nodded to Lennox grateful he'd taken the officer aside and spoke to him when he did, "Good work Brains, I'll take you back to Ops. Colonel, I shall listen to the rest of the feed in my office."
Although, technically, Optimus was already listening via comms, he wanted the time alone to digest what was happening. Charlotte's explanation to the senators proved the conversation he'd had with her last night had been timely. If that information had been sprung on Charlotte, it would've placed her in an awkward position and harm the trust he'd tried to establish between them.
The fact that she decided to reveal more about his people to the senators was sooner than he anticipated but he trusted Director Mearing to know what she was doing. She would not have said something without a purpose and no doubt the senator's knowledge was the catalyst. The question now was how did the senator know?
Optimus sighed as he clasped his servos together and leaned forward on his desk to consider the ramifications of the day's events. Good and bad. He hoped this kernel of information it would start the necessary dialog to change their position here from temporary to permanent. A dialog he hoped he could expand to all of Earth, not just secret governmental enclaves.
Given the senator's surprising revelation Charlotte no doubt deemed that was the right venue. The problem however, based on the tone and complaints made by the various senators, it didn't look good for his people.
Optimus sighed. The embassy was still in its infancy and doing its best to sway public opinion into viewing his people in a more positive light. Changing those minds would take time and he was worried he didn't have enough.
If the humans again pressed him into leaving, he would have no choice but to do so. He'd given them his word. With the base secured on the Moon, at least he could regroup his people there. With time they might be able to refurbish the Ark and make it combat ready. Then they could either stay or move on and hope doing so would lure the remaining Decepticons away.
He was doubtful, however that they would. The Decepticons had a world with a hidden network of supporters that was filled with resources and materials in abundance, why would they want to leave? Humanity would be hard pressed to maintain control. Despite the proof in the failure of the U.S. to free Chicago without Autobot intervention, there were still men like Director Galloway who were myopically set in the belief that their military forces could defeat the Decepticons.
And, if they allowed the Autobots to stay, what would be the terms? Many still viewed them as machines, tools to be used. He would not place his people into a position of being enslaved.
In his experience no matter the political arena, it was unlikely they would move quickly with this new information. One thing was always certain, political action was slow and Optimus had patience. He had to because there was no other option for him. Fighting a war with no apparent solution, separated from the ones he loved and all of the myriad tasks he'd been force to deal with as Prime were proof of that. That didn't mean his spark was impervious, far from it.
Optimus continued to listen, optics closed as he rubbed his chassis, a silent comfort to an aching spark.
— Capitol Hill —
Meeting after meeting, Sam and Carly trailed Charlotte Mearing, Francine, and Director Galloway. They were amazed and impressed at the energy and stamina both Directors displayed. Only in quiet moments, when Charlotte thought no one was watching she'd slump, clearly exhausted to the core and yet she pushed on. Director Galloway on the other hand was even more cautious and would vanish frequently.
One thing was certain, Director Mearing's single-minded dedication in support of the Autobots, even in the face of Director Galloway and various governmental officials, shifted Sam's impression of a woman he's always described as Galloway in a skirt.
When the lunch hour ended the morning session the small group split up. Charlotte and Francine headed off to attend private meetings and Director Galloway went back to the White House for whatever he had planned to do that day. For an hour, Sam and Carly were left alone and to their own devices. As they sat in a large upscale dining area they regarded their meal tiredly.
Sam leaned back and yawned, "I don't know how she does it? Stimulants?"
Carly rolled her eyes, "I would keep such thoughts to yourself, Sam, especially here. What if someone overheard? It would spread as a rumor and we don't want Charlotte as an enemy. Not now."
"True," Sam said as he grabbed her hand, "I'm glad Brains upgraded our tech, it helped, you know?"
She smiled softly, "You mean believing Optimus might be listening in?"
"Yeah," he sighed as he regarded their clasped hands and the shiny diamond on her left finger. He touched the diamond gently, "You know, that reminds me, we better get married soon. My mom is driving me crazy. If we don't put a stop to her she's going to have our entire wedding planned."
Carly chuckled, "I know, you should see my email and voicemails. I've tried to explain to her that I don't want a big wedding. Just a small, simple ceremony."
"And that's why I love you," he said as he leaned over to kiss her cheek. "How about we make arrangements to meet the parents in Atlantic City. I think that's like Vegas, right? We could find a JOP and get married sans the hoopla."
Carly frowned as she tried to understand the reference, "JOP? Sam, I don't…."
Her expression touched him like no other and he felt his heart warm even more, "Justice of the peace. Don't worry, I'll make the arrangements."
Carly's expression grew stern, "Oh no Sam. One, I refused to be married in any city that's even remotely like Las Vegas. Two, I do not wish our service to be held by anyone in a costume, especially Elivis. I just want a simple ceremony… even NEST would be fine, just please, nothing crazy."
Sam leaned back and chuckled, his tentative idea of Elvis easily blasted to pieces. Although truthfully it was more of a funny joke, he'd never seriously intended to spring that on Carly. Really. Once that youthful thought passed he looked around the room. In a way, it was hard for him to believe that he was no longer a kid in college with an awesome car. He was an ambassador for refugee aliens who happened to be awesome cars. Now he was sitting in the nation's capital attending meetings with the highest of clearances that really put a different spin on things.
With that thought an idea came to mind and he asked tentatively, "Carly, this might be on your crazy list but what would you think about having the ceremony at NEST, so the bots and Bee could attend? I mean, we're ambassadors for them wouldn't that show we think and treat them as family? And I know Optimus is rather larger than life but would you consider it off the charts to be married by Optimus? Is that too crazy?"
Carly blinked several times, "Well… Yeah, it's a little crazy. But, given our unique position it might make for good publicity for the Autobots. Or a total nightmare politically. But you're right, not including Bumblebee and the others would be wrong. I don't know Sam, is that even possible?"
"One way to find out is to ask," Sam said as he activated his pad and sent a quick text to Optimus.
"Sam," Carly quickly shoved her hand under his, "I want to be clear. No flowers, no show, just the words and be done."
Sam smiled, "I was sure you'd be the kind of woman to expect the entire show. Horse-drawn carriage, sabers in the air."
Carly smiled, "Sam, of all people you should know, looks can be deceiving."
Sam nodded as he pushed her hand away to finish the message, "Okay. Message sent. I'll ask Francine if she can help us obtain a marriage license and find out what else we need to make it legal."
Carly smiled, "Good."
Sam preened, "I'm glad you're excited to be a Witwicky."
Carly blinked and then did a modelesque moue, "I never said I was changing my name…"
"Aw, Carly," Sam whined playfully back as the two proceeded to eat their meal and talking softly with each other.

When the meeting was over Optimus returned to the elevated platform and noticed Colonel Lennox was still hovering nearby. They resumed their conversation as if it had never paused, "So, OP, based on their reaction, I take it means things are not going well for us."
Optimus shrugged, "That remains to be seen. Sometimes bluster and grandstanding is all the action that will occur. Regardless of the outcome, I'm very proud of Director Mearing. Sam and Carly also did very well, they made a good impression for us, I think."
Lennox nodded, "Well, I can't wait for a new administration and hope they keep Mearing and fire Galloway. Maybe they can replace him with someone a little less of an…"
"Colonel," Optimus warned with a slight quirk of his lip.
Lennox snorted with a grin, "Spoil sport."
Optimus chuckled and then shrugged, "Officers should take care of what they say, especially regarding superiors or those with influence. We don't want our subordinates to follow a bad example with ones of their own."
Bill sighed, "Yeah, I know but Galloway is still an a**!"
Optimus sighed when several men, whose backs were turned, nodded and chuckled in agreement, "Let's not give your men more encouragement, shall we? It's hard enough keeping Sideswipe in line."
"Oh?" Lennox leaned over the railing eager curiosity written across his face. "Why Sideswipe?"
Optimus vented, "It seems that Galloway has unfortunately offended Sideswipe. A very bad idea."
"Uh huh and," Lennox nodded encouraging Optimus to continue.
"Although, I will say that in the director's defense he was provoked. It appears Sideswipe decided to play bumper tag with Galloway's new the golf cart, unfortunately while the director was still in it. He was not amused and told Sideswipe the golf cart was a better investment than he was. Sideswipe, took offense," Optimus shrugged.
"I would too. A golf cart over Sideswipe? Sure the bot is crazy at times but still, could you imagine driving a golf cart into combat," Bill scratched his head.
Optimus nodded, "The director also said he was a waste of fuel and that the golf cart was more responsive and could at least be relied upon to do what was expected." Optimus added, "In our culture, to call someone a waste of fuel is a great insult and Sideswipe is an exceptionally proud mech."
Lennox nodded, "Oh. Now that explains everything."
"Dare I ask?"
"Well, you probably know anyway. Sideswipe has been torturing Galloway's golf cart. Just don't be surprised to read in the blotters about the latest misadventures of the Gallokart," Lennox chuckled.
"Ah, I had been meaning to ask you what the Gallokart was and now I know. I had understood those incidents to be the actions of your men," Optimus responded as he looked over the crew stationed and smiled when several seemed to tense up at that comment.
"Weeeell," Lennox added softly, "not all of it was Sideswipe. It seems to be more of a joint… uhm… team building exercise, so I thought I'd leave it alone, if you take my meaning?"
Optimus hummed thoughtfully, "I do allow a little… creativity… from time to time to encourage unit morale. However, I would suggest your men might temper their actions while I work with Sideswipe…."
Lennox added sheepishly, "And the twins."
"The twins?" Lennox nodded and still looked rather flushed.
The Colonel's behavior provoked Optimus to ask, "Is that all?"
"And… the Wreckers too," Lennox shrugged.
Optimus rubbed his forehead, "Galloway surprisingly seems to be quite a unifying force for our joint task force. Alright, then. I suggest these, exercises, be less… reactive. Less predictable…."
Lennox's smile widened as he encouraged the Prime on, "Really. Such as?"
Optimus shrugged but wasn't entirely able to hide a quirk of his lip when he said, "I would refrain from doing something immediately after an altercation. Also to be less obvious, such as when the Gallokart was found on top of the hangar. It was very clear which unit was capable of doing that and held responsible for that incident. It is much more… satisfying… to keep Director Galloway from pinpointing who is responsible."
Optimus's voice lowered, clearly admonishing those within earshot, "However, in saying these things I am not recommending or suggesting these actions continue."
Lennox nodded and added, "Of course not, sir. I understand, sir. I'll be sure to let my men know."
Optimus hummed in agreement and then changed directions, "Any contacts today?"
Lennox shook his head, "No. The Decepticons are quiet which I suppose makes sense, it's only been 6 says since you kicked their a**es all over Chicago."
Optimus tipped his helm, a modest acceptance to what had been a truly heroic effort on the part of everyone involved. However the Prime wisely added, "Don't let your men lose focus. Without leadership the Decepticons will be even more unpredictable and reactive. If you do get any signals, do not engage without our support. I don't want any more human casualties."
Lennox nodded, his professional demeanor taking the fore, "Yes sir. I'm happy to report that one of our science teams has successfully rigged several surveillance drones with energon detectors. We're using them to widen our patrols."
Optimus nodded, "That's good news, it means minimal risk during discovery. And, no doubt a boon for Director Galloway, since fueling the drones will no doubt be more cost-effective."
"Yeah," Bill nodded, "speaking of. We have to figure out ways to off-set costs or Galloway's going to continue to use that against us."
"I know," Optimus nodded. "I've been thinking about that and options. Colonel would you to provide a list to Duststorm of raw materials that are lucrative and might off-set expenses. I believe some may be attainable in locations humans find difficult to mine and perhaps she can."
Lennox frowned, "Really? But I thought all flyers were combatants."
Optimus nodded, "Her class was specifically designed to search for energy and to access it. So I see no reason why we can't expand her search, as long as whatever is acquired is done so legally. That should stall Galloway's complaints regarding expenses."
"Good idea, I'll have my people work on that," Lennox stood back. "At first I was a little worried about having one of their flyers here but if this works out…."
Optimus nodded, "For now, we should consider her as one of us. Excuse me, Colonel, I'm receiving a comm. It appears the meetings are back in session. I'll be in my office if any problems arise." With a nod Optimus strode back to his office to listen in on the next senatorial sessions.

Under the counter, next to the trailer, Bee sat parked in his alt mode with Ellie inside. The two were laughing hysterically at the contents of one of the emails that had been sent to the embassy. Bee was cycling through them on his windshield and had stopped to read one.
Wheelie was right, there were thousands of emails and more coming in. It would be quite an undertaking, especially given some of the questions, notions, or comments being sent. Bee agreed with the mini-con, he was better suited to respond to some of these than Wheelie whose acerbic nature would be sorely tested.
When they both calmed down Bee finally complained, "This is going to be harder than I thought."
Ellie nodded, "Well, you could ignore some of them and maybe save yourself the trouble."
Bee thought about that for a bit, "I don't know. Some of these emails, crazy funny as they are might be, might be serious to the person asking. How would they feel if we ignored them? I don't know. I think Optimus would say we should treat each one as a serious question and answer it to the best of our ability because that person might change the viewpoint of another and so on. At least, I think that's what Optimus would say."
"Oh man, if that's the case, it going to take you forever," Ellie groaned. "Hey, is there any way you could do like a blanket response… OH! What about a FAQ, you know for most frequently asked questions?"
"Good idea," Bee dipped slightly. "But first, we'll need to sort the emails and see if we can group them into manageable categories."
With that the scout grew quiet as he scanned batches for common phrases and began to create an appropriate algorithm. Ellie, feeling cramped from sitting crawled between the seats and pulled the backseat down to stretch out. She yawned and dozed comfortable in the warmth of Bee's cabin.
All in all, despite the time consuming nature of Bee's project, it made for an enjoyable morning for the both of them. When Bee came up with a suitable sort he nudged Ellie awake and soon the two were coming up with answers ready to be spooled into generic responses. He quickly created a database to store both questions and answers for later reference and started to respond to emails while they compiled a FAQ for the embassy's website.
Their quiet little world was interrupted by the cabinet door sliding open as FirstAid knelt down, "Ellie? Do you have a moment? Ratchet and I would like to start a basic scan and check your levels."
Ellie sighed and rested her head on her arms from the rear of his cabin sighed, "Oh well, back to reality I suppose. Bee? Thanks for hanging out with me and if you're still here, can I help you out some more?"
"Sure thing," Bee responded happily as he watched the young woman leave and walk over to FirstAid's waiting servo. FirstAid left the cabinet open for Bee to exit if he wished but Bee decided to remain. As much as 'paperwork' was an anathema to an Autobot used to field work, he didn't mind it so much when there was someone to share the work with.
Ellie however, soon forgot about the emails as she dealt with feelings of trepidation as FirstAid carried her to the counter where Ratchet stood by waiting. She looked up at her friend and asked nervously, "Is this going to be a normal examination?"
FirstAid placed her on the counter where a small pile of cloth lay folded, "To start with. It may take some time, so lay down here and relax." He watched as she did so and handed her his lead as she pulled down the wrist cover and linked in.
"I'm going to run through my normal diagnostics and then I'm going to attach you to our medical scanning computer to start running more in-depth scans," he murmured as he quickly accessed her core. With a gesture over his wrist assembly he elevated a holographic image of the data for both he and Ratchet to study.
Neither medic commented as the data streamed across the air projected in holographic imagery. She watched the display for a while, flashes of streaming alien glyphs and occasional pictures. However, between the warmth of FirstAid's arm resting nearby and the hum of both mech's energy fields, she found it hard to keep her eyes open and soon drifted off to sleep.
When an indicator noted a change in her state, FirstAid looked over at Ratchet to explain via comms, 'She does that from time to time. She said she finds our energy fields soothing, that or she said our spark noise. Is it true that some humans can be very sensitive to energy fields?'
:'Our race can, so I suppose it's possible for other races to do so too,' Ratchet scanned various medical data nets and the web. 'Although it's still considered a new area of scientific research for the humans, some suggest it's possible. Reports indicate reactions to EM fields can be displayed as irritation, like a burning sensation or feeling prickly, or that it can sometimes affect concentration, make humans feel dizzy, and it can sometimes be displayed in psychological reactions like paranoia.'
Ratchet shrugged as he continue, 'I haven't had the time to do more research on the humans to determine whether or not the fields we produce are harmful to them. There hasn't been the time. Mostly I've been focusing on the radiation we produce. That being said, we will need to know if our presence to the humans is harmful. If we are, being able to stay here is impossible.'
FirstAid nodded, 'Thus far Ellie has not exhibited any unusual symptoms but in all honesty the nanobytes in her system could be inhibiting a natural human systemic response or enhancing it. We would need a human baseline to work from that hasn't been corrupted by this technology or our presence in general.
:'First things first, Aid, let's hook her up to the medcom and start an in-depth analysis. You're right, there's only so much our individual medical systems can do and Ellie's issue is very unique.'

Before the next round of congressional meetings after the lunch break and before the Witwicky's joined them, Director Galloway waited impatiently for Director Mearing to arrive via the elevator. When she exited he motioned quite emphatically for her to join him. His face was dark and confrontational, "I just read your report."
Charlotte blinked and responded mildly, "Would you be more specific, I've submitted several."
He leaned into her as he spoke. It took a great deal of control for Charlotte not to retreat, not due to intimidation but because he must've had onions with his lunch. It was hard to not be distracted by the smell as she struggled to keep her face from looking disgusted.
However what he said made her quickly forget the odor, "Director Mearing, your people retrieved something in Chicago six days ago and illegally transported it to your NEST facility. Specifically a a trailer containing a top secret prototype and one of my scientists. Neither belong to your division and I will be sending a crew to retrieve them both later today."
When he attempted to walk away Charlotte grabbed his arm, her eyes narrowed, "Not so fast Director Galloway. The technology you claim as a prototype contains Cybertronian weapons technology and falls under our alliance treat with the Autobots and is therefore my jurisdiction, not yours. However, Doctor Chen is free to go with you if she wishes."
As the hallway started to fill with aids, senators, news reporters and the like, Director Galloway stepped closer and whispered, "Really? I'd like to see you try and stop me. I have presidential authority on this."
Charlotte simply arched a brow, "Really? I'll be happy to review that paperwork with Optimus Prime, as soon as you send it to me. Until then, the technology stays with me. End of discussion."
"Orders are orders, and my truck will arrive with orders at NEST shortly. If you want to change them, you'll have to speak to the President," Galloway smirked proudly.
"We shall see," was all Charlotte would say. Then she turned on her heel and strode away. As soon as she felt she was at a safe distance she looked over her shoulder to see if Galloway was following. When they were clear she drew Francine close, "Get me Optimus, we have a problem."

Starwing went to one knee before her commander, who was still seated with his optics dim, "Good, training is complete for today sir."
Skyquake's optics brightened as he looked up and quipped sarcastically, "You will explain to me how sitting is supposed to help?" He groaned as he rose to his pedes, "Nice moves, by the way. You're an excellent fighter."
"Thank you sir," she said primly as she walked over to the controls and disabled the feed and entry lock. "You may wish to stop by medical, just to make sure nothing was injured."
Skyquake smirked, "Ha hah. I will, however, visit the racks. Wanna join me?"
As they walked down the corridor, which amazingly was still unoccupied, the first answered, "No sir. I'd like to run deeper scans on the Metroplex. I also want to check with Tech to see if they've managed to break through the shielding so we can tap into their comms."
Skyquake nodded, "Excellent. Well, if there are any problems, comm me."
"Yes sir," she motioned for him to have the lift.
He smiled, "You aren't coming?"
"I think we've have enough one-on-one time to keep the gossips happy, let's not add to it," she said as she reached in and touched the appropriate level and then stepped back. The elevator door closed on his laughter.
She continued to stand still and passively as she waited for the elevator to return.

As Optimus sat waiting for the next round of meetings to begin, he scrolled through the data Prowl had sent regarding Cybertron. The news was surprisingly good, considering they'd presumed the planet had been destroyed.
A beep indicated an incoming phone call from Director Mearing, Optimus frowned as he opened the comm, 'This is Optimus.'
Director Mearing's voice was direct and to the point, 'We have a problem. It seems that little gadget we picked up in Chicago belongs to none other than Director Galloway and his minions. I don't have much information other than he is responsible for a top secret division researching weaponry and that fell thing under his auspices. I wish I could give you more but I've been refused clearance.'
Optimus pulled back in his seat in shock, 'That is… surprising.'
:'I'm trying to stall because I have authority based on our treaty. But Galloway claims that the technology was salvaged so we have no jurisdiction. The President concurred and signed an order for us to release the device and Dr. Chen to him. I've contacted the White House but I'm being stalled. I don't think I can prevent him from taking the device. But… I can't exactly prevent you from taking what's yours either, right? Just make sure you do it before Director Galloway arrives.'
Optimus nodded, 'Thank you for the warning Director. Out.' The Autobot leader rose to his pedes and quickly hurried out of his office and toward the medical bay.
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
Ratchet and FirstAid were leaning over Ellie when the Prime burst in, shutting the door rather loudly behind him, "Drop what you're doing. I need you both to remove all of the Cybertronian technology from this device now. Director Galloway has men heading here to take it and I don't know when they're arriving."
Ratchet quickly saved the material they'd been working on as FirstAid woke up Ellie. FirstAid helped the groggy woman up and spoke softly to her as he returned her to the space under the counter. As soon as that was done he joined Ratchet at the first medical berth.
"Is there anything I can do to help," Optimus asked as the two medics began to disassemble the device.
Ratchet looked up, "If they're due to arrive soon, perhaps you can stall them?"
Optimus nodded and left the bay and the device in the medic's competent hands.

The Prime strode with purpose to the elevated walkway as he called out for the officer of the day.
"That's still me Optimus," Colonel Lennox shouted back as the Prime rumbled to a stop. "Just got the call from Galloway and Mearing. There's a semi at the gate demanding entry and I've got my guys stalling but I don't know how long we can."
Optimus looked up, "This is a rather large complex colonel, why not take advantage of it? Also, I would suggest you deploy a team with my men and search the truck and trailer thoroughly. If there are any questions, simply say its procedure and that we can't be too careful these days."
"Yes sir," Bill turned and quickly relayed orders for two ATVs to rendezvous at the hangar.
Optimus turned with his servo to his helm, 'Sideswipe, Dino, report to the hangar immediately.' The urgency in Optimus's voice was not missed by the two mechs who surged into the hangar and raced toward the walkway.
When they arrived Optimus explained in rather rushed tones, "Director Galloway has a semi here to cart away the device we recovered in Chicago. Ratchet and FirstAid are trying to remove all of the Cybertronian components but we need to buy them more time. Stall the truck, search it, take it the long way around, do whatever you can, just don't make it obvious that that's what you're doing. Go."
Sideswipe smirked as the two quickly walked out of the hangar followed by the ATVs. As soon as that was done Optimus's servo was back up activating his comms, 'Ratchet, status?'
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
Ellie watched as the cabinet door as it slid shut and walked over to Bumblebee, who was kind enough to put on his parking lights so she could see. She climbed into his cabin, "Wow, something big is going on."
"I heard," Bumblebee said as she settled into the driver's seat, "we just need to stay out of the way and be quiet until they leave."
"Sounds good to me," she muttered and then her stomach rumbled loudly. "I guess I know what I'm doing next." With a smile she patted the steering wheel and climbed out of the Camaro and headed into the trailer to make something to eat.
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
The driver, a young soldier, was exceptionally annoyed as he kicked a deflated tire, "The director's going to be pissed that we're late!"
One of the NEST soldiers smiled companionably, "Don't worry. We've got a call to our mechanic. He'll be here in a few minutes and we'll get you up and running. The director's got to understand that some things can't be helped and flat tires are one of them."
The soldier eyed the two, very tall Cybertronians, one silver and one red and whispered, "They're bigger than I thought."
The NEST soldier whispered back, "They're pretty cool aren't they? That one over there turns into a Corvette and that one a Ferrari. Wanna see?"
The driver's eyes opened wide, "Really? Will they? I mean they won't mind would they?"
"Just don't touch them too much, they take offense to that." The NEST officer smiled and then called out, "Hey Sideswipe, Dino, this guy has never seen Transformers up close. Do you mind?"
Sideswipe hid his annoyance and smiled with gritted denta, "Sure." Then he activated his transformation sequence, at the slowest possible setting. He preened when the driver stepped forward clearly in awe. Two of the younger NEST officers stepped back and tried to hide knowing grins. Operation Diversion commenced.
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
"Optimus," Lennox shouted to get the Prime's attention. "We've got the trailer stalled on the tarmac. How much time do you need?"
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
Ten minutes later Ratchet stepped back from the device as FirstAid pulled up a cart and started to load all of the Cybertronian components. What remained wasn't much as Ratchet reached up and activated his comms, 'Optimus, we're ready.'
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
Sideswipe took another lap around the flightline with the driver in the driver's seat screaming his head off. It was a unique mixture of terror and gleeful abandon that the mech found rather endearing. When the comm came in that the truck was ready he said aloud as he swung off the runway and headed down the flightline road, "Hey Skippy, the mechanic's fixed your truck, you're good to go."
"Oh man," the sergeant panted not at all offended at the silly nickname given the circumstances, "that was awesome! YOU are awesome. I don't suppose you could take another lap?"
"Aren't you afraid of getting into trouble," Sideswipe responded cagily.
The sergeant sighed, "Yeah but mechanical failures are mechanical failures, right? Do you mind?"
Sideswipe eager for speed answered happily, "A mech after my own spark." With a quick turn he headed back to the flightline with the sergeant yelling encouragement all the way.
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
Lennox laughed, "Uh Optimus? I think it's going to take a little longer than expected."
Optimus regarded the officer warily, "Oh? Why?"
"It seems Sideswipe's taken a shine to the driver, they're on their third lap around the runway," Lennox laughed.
Optimus nodded and opened comms, 'Sideswipe, enough fun, return to base.'
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
Sideswipe grumbled as he put himself into a skid and tore off towards the perimeter road, "Sorry Skippy, can't make ya too late, orders."
"Hey, for what it's worth," the sergeant said taking care not to put his hands anywhere he thought the Transformer might think awkward, "thanks! I've always wanted to do that."
"Really," Sideswipe said thoughtfully, "then here's the deal, talk to Colonel Lennox before you go and give him your number. If you get fragged by Galloway for the mechanical failure, come work for us."
"That would be AWESOME," the sergeant could barely contain himself as Sideswipe skidded to a halt next to the repaired truck. "Thanks!"
The sergeant could barely stop himself from bouncing, and thus cemented in Sideswipe's mind the nickname Skippy, as he chattered all the way back to his truck. He did stop talking long enough to check the tires and confirm with NEST's mechanic that it was ready to drive and mounted the vehicle. Soon the small convoy of vehicles approached the NEST hangar where Optimus waited by the walkway.
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
Sideswipe transformed and walked up to Prime and Lennox as the ATV's and Dino took the semi towards the medical bay. The silver frontliner addressed the pair, "I just wanted to say, that driver was alright by me. So, Lennox, make sure Skippy doesn't get messed over."
Bill looked at Sideswipe in shock, "Skippy? Really?"
Sideswipe smirked, "Yeah, I like him. He doesn't scream like a little girl when I hit the accelerator." With that cryptic statement the mech winked and followed the small caravan.
Optimus looked over at Lennox and noted the decidedly annoyed expression on the Colonel's face, "Dare I ask?"
Lennox looked up and said sternly, "No," and walked away.
Optimus blinked and then followed Sideswipe to the medical bay. When he arrived he looked at the contents remaining on the table in shock and quickly opened comms, 'Where is the rest of the device?'
Ratchet smirked, "That's it. At least that's all of the human tech."
Optimus hummed thoughtfully as he watched the two medics load what remained into the rear of the trailer. The driver looked at what was there and mused, "It would've been easier to use a van, there's not much here."
No one said anything in response as the driver quickly closed the trailer. Within moments the small vehicular caravan was motoring away.
Ratchet walked up to Optimus, "Galloway's going to make a serious stink over this."
"I'm afraid so," Optimus sighed, "are you sure you removed all of our technology?"
"It was surprisingly easy," Ratchet admitted as he leaned against the cleared medical berth. "Basically it looks like they were trying to cobble together a mech and made up for the missing parts with their own technology. Optimus, they had a good understanding of us, which is concerning. But, in the end it wouldn't have mattered, they'd never get a thing like that at working combat level."
Optimus turned, "How so?"
"Biology. They knew they needed an energy source and fuel, so they used what they could. They could animate the body but true functionality requires a spark. Without it the nanobots won't respond properly, energy transfer won't engage properly, even with an accurate understanding of our mathematics, medical science, and language, there's no way anyone could make it work the way they wanted it to."
"That's good to know," Optimus sighed, "at least that's one less thing we need to worry about."
FirstAid shook his helm, "Actually, let's hope they don't realize that. It's better to keep them from attempting other misguided scientific experiments."
Optimus looked at the younger medic, "Such as your charge? Is it worse than you thought?"
FirstAid nodded and then looked at the cabinet knowing Bumblebee and probably Ellie could hear what they were saying and tried to avoid voicing his concerns, "Ratchet and I have just run her systems through the medcom. We still have to analyze the data and we also have several ideas we're going to try."
Optimus followed his gaze and sighed understanding the subtly communicated message, "I see. Well, if you need me, I'll be in my office."
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
Bumblebee picked up the conversation, especially FirstAid's stilted answer. It didn't take much for him to get the gist of what wasn't being said. He scanned the young woman who was busily preparing a meal in the trailer, a youngling going about her life.
He felt his spark fire up in anger. It wasn't fair, he thought and worse, there was nothing he could do about it. War was never fair to the young and his own life was a testament to that truth. All he could do is try to be a good friend and pray that Ratchet and FirstAid would help her.
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
As Optimus walked back to his office he activated his comms and left a cryptic message with Director Mearing, 'The device was retrieved. Expect a challenge.'
— En route from the Capitol to HHS – NEST —
Director Galloway decided not to attend the remaining meetings as he was eager to get a look at the device which survived the attack on Chicago. Unfortunately for his project, the other two trailers had been destroyed by the Decepticons. Valuable hardware and scientists were lost that day and that put their time schedule far behind what his superiors wanted.
His limousine pulled into the HHS driveway, his purpose was to extract Dr. Chen. Given the package he was prepared to offer her, he was confident he would not walk away from this meeting empty handed.
— HHS Facility – NEST —
Maggie had given Hui a tour of the Coop and were happily talking computer languages when the call came in that Director Galloway was there to remove her.
Maggie took Hui to a private office and shut the door, "I'm gonna be straight up with you. I don't know why Director Galloway wants you but I don't like the man. He's an arrogant jerk. Now, I'll bat for you but I gotta know where you stand."
The air flew out of Hui as she sunk into her chair, "Director Galloway is here? As I told you earlier, I was assigned to a classified project trying to create robot sized armor for human pilots. The company I worked for was visited frequently by Director Galloway. It was normal for a government contractor to receive high-level dignitaries and he would, from time to time, inspect the project I was on and attend meetings. I never worked with him directly."
Maggie arched a brow at her, "And?"
"He was like any other government official, always wanted things done yesterday, no patience, very abrupt, insulting at times."
"And what about you," Maggie asked. "Which team are you batting for?"
Hui looked at Maggie and said with all honesty, "The one that can protect our world."
Maggie's eyes narrowed, "Okay, and do you think Galloway's the one that can do that?"
Hui clasped her hands on the desk before her, "Before I met Jolt, I thought so but since then, I don't know. I have no idea who is the right side but if he's here then I'm afraid I have no choice in choosing who I must work for."
"Why? You may be under contract but you're not a slave. Contracts can be broken. Hui, you have to stay with us… you've got quite a head on you and we could really your help," Maggie stopped noting the woman's distress.
Maggie calmed down a bit and tried to be reassuring, "Look, your options are open. Stay here and see for yourself. If you decide later we're not the right place for you pack up and leave… well after you've signed a mountain of nondisclosures. We're all here because we want to be and we want to protect our world from the Decepticons. If you want to work with us, you gotta feel the same way."
Hui frowned, "How? I hardly even know you let alone what kind of project you're all working on."
Maggie smirked, "Well if you leave with Galloway you won't get the chance now will ya? Just say no and we'll block him from taking you so you can have the time you need to decide. Whaddya say?"
Hui sighed and nodded, "So far, despite the challenges, I like what I see here but I would like to have more time to judge for myself."
Maggie slammed her hands down on the desk as she pushed herself up and nodded making the smaller woman jump in fright, "Right! Welcome to NEST."
Hui looked up at the woman as if she were crazy, "Wait… but, we just. I just… Did we not agree that I have not decided yet?"
Maggie made a noise, a sort of combination between a snort and pshaw sound, "I'm not worried cause we are the good guys. Come on, let's get you back to your desk and I'll call Galloway and tell him to go stick it."
Hui's mouth fell open, unused to such disrespect for senior officials. Maggie laughed at the smaller woman's expression and explained, "I don't put up with anybody these days. I've had a midget robot try to blow my head off. Trust me these bureaucrats got nothing on crazed Decepticons."
Hui rose to her feet as Maggie led the way, "You have?"
Maggie smiled eager to tell her story, "You heard about Hoover Dam right? Well ya see I was working for….."

Colonel Lennox put down the phone and ran his hand through his hair as he asked one of the airmen on the walkway, "When is Mearing due back?"
"Not until late," the airman answered.
"Great, just great. Hey Frank, will you send Director Galloway to Conference Room 1? Make sure the JCS is connected and ready, also send up something to eat, drink, and tell Galloway I'll be there shortly," Bill said as he strode off the walkway and to his office to collect his dress uniform. If he was going to get chewed out and fired, he was going to go out in style.
As he did, he sent a text to Francine's phone, "Tell Mearing, Galloway is here and wants Chen."
When he reached his 'home away from home' quarters his phone chimed. He opened his door and then pulled out his phone to read a text from Francine, "Understood. Unable to get away, delay if possible."
"Great," muttered Bill as he dropped onto his bed to untie is boot laces. Within moments he was undressed and beginning to put on his dress uniform. When he was complete he turned to his mirror where a picture of his family sat and muttered, "Hey sorry honey, might be coming home sooner than expected. Gonna be ticking off a director from the President's very own cabinet. Hooah!"
He brushed his hair and stared at his reflection, "Think positive."
His reflection merely rolled his eyes making Bill snap, "Shut up, who asked you!" With that the Colonel spun on his heel to pick up his phone and stuff it into his jacket pocket as he headed up to the business wing of NEST.
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
Director Theodore Galloway knew a stall when he saw one and the ant hill busy NEST facility to his jaded eye was in full distraction mode. No one would speak to him beyond a 'yes sir' or 'no sir' that simply verified his belief that those who chose a career in the military were mental morons.
He'd gone to Conference Room 1 and spent a few moments yelling at General Moreshower over the satellite feed before he stood and left the room to 'get results'. The only problem was that he did not know the full layout of the facility and had no idea where to start.
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
As Bill left his quarters, his radio came to life, "Colonel Lennox please respond."
Bill looked at his hand at the radio and then pulled it up to activate it, "Go ahead."
"Director Galloway is on the move. Orders?"
Bill stepped into the elevator and punched lower level 1 as he held the radio to his mouth, "Where is he?"
"Hey…," the voice changed. "This is Director Galloway, you will take me to Dr. Chen's location immediately. Don't you dare touch me…."
Bill sighed as he activated his radio and said like an overly tired parent, "Let the Director have the radio."
"I have the radio, Lennox. Get your a** down here and get these morons away from me. NOW!"
Bill ran down the hallway following the echos of Galloway's voice and turned the corner to see several of his men looking harried as Director Galloway yelled at them to open the door. Once his men saw him relief was evident enough that Galloway turned around.
'Yep,' Bill thought, 'he's in a good mood.'Bill walked up and saluted, "Director Galloway, it's good to see you sir. Was there a problem with the food in Conference Room 1?" Bill motioned for Director Galloway to follow him back to the conference rooms.
"I will NOT be handled, Lennox. I want Chen and I want her now," Theodore snarled as he tried to get into the officer's face.
Bill had to blink a few times to keep himself from saying a few snarky remarks that came to mind but with herculean effort managed to simply say, "Of course sir. I've orders to have her meet us in the conference room. If you'll follow me I'll check on her status."
"Now Lennox, no games or I'm going to make sure when it comes to review time your name will be so smeared the only stars you'll see will be in the sky. Are we clear," Theodore snarled as he tossed the radio at one of the camouflaged dressed soldiers and stomped down the hall.
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
At one of the rear entrances of the main HHS building, two soldiers stood guard alongside the regular 'cover' detail that manned the lobby of the building. In order to make their cover more effective the facility, at least above ground actually housed an HHS division.
The assignment was dull and expectedly so given the position but its merit was to fulfill security and to test Sergeant Romero's dedication to duty. That was until a barked order was screamed over the radio, "Hey…. This is Director Galloway, you will take me to Dr. Chen's location immediately. Don't you dare touch me…."
Sergeant Cordero looked over at his fellow NEST soldier darkly, "I know that voice. That's Director Galloway alright. Look, I know I'm not authorized for the lower levels yet but Dr. Chen is a friend of mine and I'm worried about her."
Jake shook his head, "Oh no buddy, no can do. Galloway is Colonel Lennox's problem, not ours. And right now you're to man this post and learn the ropes and that means following SOP."
Romero looked away, "You don't understand…."
"Of course I do," Jake said conciliatorily, "You like her, even if you say you don't. Doesn't matter either way because there's nothing you can do about it."
The look on Romero's face was enough for Jake to grab the older man's arm, "Cordero, listen to me. We protect our own and Lennox will not let anything happen to her. Do you hear me? Besides, Galloway won't hurt her, he needs her."
Romero arched a brow at Sergeant Smith suspiciously, "Really, how would you know?"
Jake pulled back from the larger man and swallowed, "Easy there my friend, I'm just going by my experience. You know, when Galloway was running the show?"
Romero frowned, "Wait, what? Galloway ran NEST?"
The ranger shrugged, "More like tried to destroy it, at least regarding the Autobots. But when he was dealing with the eggheads he was all smooth, creepy smooth. He did manage to poach a few of our people but most were wise to him."
"How do you know," Romero growled softly as he scanned the hallway watching the normal activity of a regular workday with equal suspicion.
"Ah," Jake smiled widely, "now that's a story. We picked up this hot Australian babe in Nevada. Oh my God! I'm talking tall, blond, legs that don't end and a voice to match her face. A total goddess…."
Romero examined his friend and shook his head as he snapped his fingers in front of Jake's face, "Down to Earth buddy."
"Oh yeah," Jake flushed as he tried to assume a more professional demeanor. "I was lucky to be posted to the eggheads and had some time to get to know Maggie, Maggie Madsen. Anyway, that was when Galloway used an executive order to move the base back to Diego Garcia. He totally tried to put the 'we need you, your people need you' moves on her. We talked a lot back then and boy Galloway rubbed her the wrong way. That's what I meant."
Romero shrugged, "So, what does that have to do with Lennox?"
Jake looked up and down the corridor to make sure no one was listening and said softly, "Ah, do you remember the alien attack on the pyramids? Well this was right before that then, Galloway managed to convince the President to give him full authority…."
"So he ran the show before Director Mearing did," Romero asked.
Jake nodded, "Yeah and when Lennox and crew were prepping to move to DG…."
"DG?"
"Keep up man, Diego Garcia," Jake hissed softly as several business suited twenty-somethings looked at them in such a way that it made Romero's blood boil.
Romero kept a straight face as he whispered venomously, "Just keep on walking heffes 'cause if you stop I'm gonna put my fist in your face."
Jake had to turn and cover a snort, "I am so gonna enjoy working with you, Romy."
Romero turned and glared at Jake who held up his hand and snickered, "Okay Rome-eo, anyway, let me get back to my story."
"Romero," the ranger growled.
Jake true to form ignored the sergeant, "Uh huh, so Rome-eo, Epps and Graham did end runs around Galloway to keep him from finding out what Lennox was up to. He and the JCS came up with a plan to distract Galloway, convince him go to DG so we could move our people here without interference."
"Which was funny all in itself because the JCS tells Galloway, 'no you can't go, it's dangerous' and Galloway was all like 'you're telling me I can't go?' And the JCS is all like 'sir it's for your own protection' and Galloway is all like 'you must be hiding something from me, I'm going'," Jake snorted loud enough to draw the regular guard's attention.
He waved them off and turned to Romero, "Psychology 101. Tell someone with self-esteem issues he can't do something and bam!"
Romero frowned, "Watch the volume!"
"Oh yeah, sorry bro," Jake straightened and tried to act professional as the pair continued to survey the hall. "Anyway, they managed to manipulate the little Napoleon onto the flight so the rest of us could move our brain trust somewhere safe. That would give the PTB time to figure out how to keep Galloway from pulling them."
"PTB?"
Jake frowned, "Where have you been living dude? Under a rock? Haven't you ever seen Buffy? PTB, the powers that be?"
Romero took in a really deep breath and let it out slowly. He'd been assigned to units with soldiers who were enamored with science fiction and fantasy. He learned quickly that it was best to let them talk it and never ever tell them he wasn't a fan.
He'd made that mistake once. As soon as they discovered his lack of interest, it became their mission to convert him. Hours and hours trapped on post listening to stories about Star Wars to The Lord of the Rings. Discourses about authors to comparisons of movie interpretations versus the book to which books they wanted turned into movies. The worst moment was being stuck on guard duty in the middle of nowhere and for eight hours having to listen to two of them arguing about something called metachlorians. Utter torture.
Romero schooled his features into something akin to a bland 'well duh' look and deflected, "Sue me, I'm worried about Hui."
Jake grinned gleefully, "Ah HA! I knew you had a thing for her."
Romero chuckled to himself, 'So easy.' He knew the mere mention of Hui's first name would distract Jake, "So, you were telling me about Galloway?"
"Yeah, well they managed to dump Galloway and then all hell broke loose in Egypt. Galloway's little power grab was forgotten because the Egypt incident was blamed on him. The President fired him, Galloway out, Mearing in."
"I still don't like it," Romero grumbled as he looked at his watch, it was 1400 and he had two more hours to go.
Jake shrugged, "Who does? Look, just trust Lennox, he'll watch out for her."
Romero watched the lobby and muttered, "I hope so."
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
Hui was grateful Maggie was beside her as they walked with Hui's security detail to the lift, "I'm glad you're coming."
"Eh," Maggie shrugged, "I couldn't let you face the bugger alone now could I?"
Hui's glance flicked from Maggie to her detail and noted various expressions that quickly shifted to professional. She looked at the elevator doors and thought about the reactions of those surrounding her and realized that unlike others she worked with, these people felt like a family.
The thought of family made her heart ache as she thought about China, she missed her parents. Unfortunately her decision to go to the United States to work on the armor project created a schism between them. They were true Chinese nationalists and felt she would better serve their country by working on the Chinese program.
The lure moving her to the U.S. program was code she'd been made privy to, a coding language that had no Earthly counterpart.
The incident in Shanghai was the final catalyst that allowed the Chinese authority to grant permission for her to relocate to the U.S. and work on the joint national project. Technically, she was still a Chinese citizen and was working in the U.S. on a green card. She was also promised the opportunity for dual citizenship if her programming proved viable.
That was before the Decepticons hit Chicago and now all of her work was either destroyed or locked below with the Autobots. Her visa was due to expire and although she wanted to return home, what she wanted more was to stay. This was the closest she'd ever gotten to the aliens and she knew if she went home she'd never get another opportunity to do so and learn more.
The elevator doors hushed open and the small contingent stepped out and was immediately pounced on by Director Galloway. Despite Lennox's attempts, Galloway would not move into the conference room until he was sure Dr. Chen was with him.
Hui caught Colonel Lennox's expression, one of apology, until Galloway stepped into space, "Ahhhh, Dr. Chen! It's so good to see you." The director looped an arm through hers and started to lead her away until he noticed the group accompanying them.
Theodore ignored them as he led Hui into the conference room but stopped at the entrance, "Dr. Chen, would you wait a moment for me here."
Unsure what to do, Hui nodded and stepped into the conference room as Galloway shut the door behind her. It was easy to hear the shouting as Hui walked over to the buffet table to pick up a bottle of water to wait to see what would happen next.
—◊◊—◊◊—◊◊—
Once the door shut Galloway stepped into Colonel Lennox's face, "I don't know what you think you're doing Colonel but you aren't coming into the conference room."
Bill regarded the Director passively as he looked at his men and silently motioned for them to stand down and wait. Maggie however turned and entered the conference room anyway as Galloway sputtered.
Bill stepped past the infuriated director as he explained, "Sir, Director Mearing's orders are that Dr. Chen must be accompanied by a military guard at all times. Now, let's start the JCS is waiting sir."
Once inside the conference room Bill noticed Maggie had taken a seat next to Hui. He nodded to them both, "Ladies," and walked over to the buffet to pick up a bottle of soda and a cookie. He turned and made sure Galloway knew exactly where he was placing his food, in the spot opposite of Maggie next to Dr. Chen.
Hui looked up confused and blinked when Colonel Lennox winked at her as he sat down. She blinked in surprise and couldn't help blushing. She quickly looked away.
All heads popped up when Galloway dropped his brief case on the table, "I see, so this is how it's going to be is it?"
All heads turned in the room when the conference room screen split and two video feeds appeared. General Moreshower looked dryly into the camera, "Yes sir, this is exactly how it's going to be."
"Who authorized him to be here," Galloway asked as he motioned to the other side of the split screen.
Optimus answered politely, "Director Galloway, NEST is a joint task force."
As Galloway argued with General Galloway, Maggie leaned over to whisper, "See, I told ya you wouldn't be alone."
Hui had to swallow past the lump in her throat as she caught Lennox nod in her peripheral vision.
Colonel Lennox leaned over slightly, he had to given Hui's stature and whispered, "Besides, a certain someone told me if I let anything happen to you, valuable pieces of my anatomy would be in jeopardy."
Hui flushed even more and asked, "Romero?"
Bill smirked in response and then added, "By the way, he's off duty at 1600 and will be in the mess about 1630 or so…."
Hui quickly looked down and clasped her hands in front of her, "Thank you Colonel."
Maggie leaned over and whispered, "Leave off Billy."
Hui looked up at Maggie and smiled, "Oh no, that's alright Maggie, I wanted to know."
Maggie looked from Bill to Hui, "Oh?"
Unfortunately Director Galloway had had enough and decided he would deal with the occupants as he turned, "I hate to interrupt your little tête-a-tête but I'm here to speak with Dr. Chin."
"Director, I hate to correct ya," Maggie said sarcastically, "but tête-a-tête means a conversation between two people not three and second, it's Chen, C-h-e-n, Chen."
Theodore glared at Maggie and then his demeanor changed as he smiled beneficently at Hui, "I'm very sorry for the mistake Doctor Chen. And I must apologize for all of this. Our meeting was supposed to be confidential as I wish to discuss your future."
Director Galloway turned to the video screen and glowered again, "A personal matter that shouldn't be turned into a circus of epic proportions."
Theodore turned back to her and smiled as he opened his briefcase, "I am aware that your visa is due to expire and that part of the terms of your employment contract to convert that visa into dual citizenship was based on merit."
"Unfortunately the enemy attack on the facility destroyed all of your research. I'm sure you believe that means your petition for dual citizenship will be denied. However, I'm here to reassure you that's not the case. I have documents prepared that will insure your citizenship request will be fast-tracked. All you have to do is sign this paperwork and accompany me out of this facility," Director Galloway slid a packet adorned with yellow tabs over towards Hui.
"All you have to do is turn to the tabbed pages, sign and we can leave this nightmare behind," Theodore smiled charmingly.
At least Hui thought so until Maggie interrupted, "And where will she go?"
Director Galloway was careful to contain his frustration as he turned, "Classified."
"Right," Maggie pushed on, "so you expect Dr. Chen here to sign that and then walk out with you to places unknown?"
"She will be informed on the way," Director Galloway answered and smiled at Hui. "You must understand that the project you will be working on will be exciting and very lucrative. Unfortunately I cannot reveal the details in this open forum. I don't know if the line is secure and I do know that Ms. Madsen and Colonel Lennox don't have the required security clearances."
Optimus's deep voice rumbled through the speakers, ill-equipped to handle the bass tones, "I cannot recommend Dr. Chen choose where she will work without adequate information nor the time to consider all options. Therefore, I suggest we express why we believe she should work with NEST. Then I will leave the matter in your capable hands, Director Galloway."
Director Galloway's mouth opened and then shut as he considered Optimus's suggestions, "So you're saying you'll permit me to speak to her alone?"
"If that is her desire, yes," Optimus nodded. "But she should be allowed to understand the merits of both positions being offered her and be given adequate time to make that decision."
Director Galloway's eyes narrowed realizing Optimus's play, "Time is limited…."
Maggie interrupted, "No it's not. The Decepticons aren't doin' a darned thing so there's no reason she has to make a decision right now. Optimus is right, she's got the right to take as long as she likes."
Galloway regarded the Australian dismissively, "Based on your limited understanding I suppose that would be the case. But there are many things in flux right now and speed is of the essence. I'm afraid the offer I have expires when I leave this facility."
Maggie muttered a descriptive word under her breath, "So you're saying if she wants citizenship she goes with you or goes home then?"
Director Galloway turned to Hui and smiled kindly, "It was difficult enough to convince my superiors to offer you this package…."
"You know how I hate to argue with you," Maggie interrupted.
Galloway couldn't help himself and asked sarcastically, "Really?"
"No," Maggie answered which made Colonel Lennox snort, "but Dr. Chen is a highly valued scientist and it makes sense your superiors would want to court her. But force her? No, that's all you, which means something's up because I don't trust you."
Optimus quickly interrupted, "Maggie, your support and experience is appreciated but I believe we should allow Director Galloway to speak."
"Alright Optimus," Maggie leaned back in her seat and placed her hands in her lap and simply glared at Director Galloway.
Galloway's face twitched and he quickly made a move to adjust his glasses to suggest he was in control as he regarded the tiny woman seated across from him, "You have had a day to observe this facility and the opportunities they may afford you. But one thing they can't give you is citizenship and that's something I can do for you. Working within my division will give you that and many other exciting opportunities. NEST, based on my sources, won't be a unit for much longer and I'd hate for you to become lost in the shuffle."
Bill stiffened and looked over at the screen. General Moreshower's expression was impassive as he leaned over and cut the audio.
Director Galloway watched the interplay and smiled, "That's why working with me will insure a great future for you Dr. Chen. But, I'm willing to wait for you to hear what opportunity NEST has and then, once they leave, I can show you my offer."
General Moreshower activated the audio, "I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to Director Galloway but NEST has multi-national approval. There's nothing to indicate our operation and treaty is being disbanded any time soon."
"What I can tell Dr. Chen is that working with NEST affords her an opportunity to work with scientists from around the world who work in various scientific fields. Not only that, she will have the opportunity to work closely with our allies the Autobots. She already has a working relationship with their medic Jolt. She has a taste of the advances and opportunities working with NEST will provide. Optimus, do you have anything to add?"
Optimus nodded, "Dr. Chen, you and I have only met once but I am aware of your credentials and fields of study. What you don't realize is the reason why I am encouraging you to work with my people. Director Galloway supposes that our purposes are solely for military advancements and in part that is true."
"Many of my Autobots joined service out of necessity, to survive. I would like to afford my people a sense of normalcy, a post-war atmosphere where they can study for pleasure and peace-time pursuits. You see, Dr. Chen, the title of Prime is more than leading in times of war. I am responsible for their well-being and to lead them to peace and in peace as well. I believe working with you will give them much needed hope."
Hui frowned, "I don't understand how I can do that."
Optimus smiled, "By sharing what you know, by working with my people and studying together. You won't be limited to military projects. We've been asked by member nations to provide safe technology. You could be called upon to work on projects such as creating a device which can desalinate water economically, render nuclear facilities safe, help clear up irradiated lands like Russia and Japan. You might be asked to work on a project to find a new safe energy source, or better building materials, or create better more effective medicines. That is what we would offer you if you work with us. Thank you for giving me your attention. Unfortunately I have other matters I must attend to so I will leave you in General Moreshower and Colonel Lennox's capable hands."
General Moreshower nodded, "Thank you Optimus." The screen expanded when Optimus's side turned to static. "Dr. Chen, I believe Optimus Prime was quite eloquent. I have nothing further to add. Colonel Lennox, like Optimus, I have things I must attend to. Director Galloway." The general nodded and the screen went blank.
Colonel Lennox reached to the center of the table and disengaged the satellite feed transmission and equipment, "Okay, Dr. Chen. Do you have any questions for me?"
Hui sat back in her chair surprised, Optimus had provided her insight that she hadn't considered and she found it quite intriguing. There were far too many questions she wanted to ask but not one in particular came to mind so she simply said, "No, Colonel Lennox."
"Good," Director Galloway interjected, "now if you two will clear out I can explain to Dr. Chen what my division will…."
Hui took a deep breath and went on gut instinct, "That's alright Director Galloway. I appreciate the effort you went through to bring me this offer. However, I sincerely wish to explore the opportunities Optimus Prime outlined." She rose to her feet and stretched an arm across the table to shake, "I hope that your offer will remain should I change my mind."
Maggie simply smirked as Director Galloway looked at her hand and pointedly ignored it as he stuffed the document back into his briefcase, "We shall see. Good day." With that he snatched at the handle and stormed out of the office.
Bill reached for his radio, "This is Lennox. Please help Director Galloway get back to his car." He set the radio on the table and then turned and regarded the buffet happily, "Shame to let this go to waste."
Hui slumped back into her chair unable to hide her trembling, "I don't think I can eat after that."
Maggie patted the tiny woman on the shoulder, "Trust me, this spread is rather nice. At least make yourself a plate for later. Oh wait…" The woman looked over at Lennox and smirked, "You've got a dinner engagement tonight don't ya."
Hui buried her face in her hands as Bill looked over at Maggie, "Looks like you broke her. You. Fix." With that he gleefully stuffed a sandwich into his mouth when the radio barked, 'Colonel Lennox, please report to the elevated walkway…'
He grunted as he grabbed a plate and started stacking sandwiches and various treats. He felt the hair on the back of his neck rise and turned. Both women were starting at him in horror making him bark defensively, "What?! This is for the guys."
"Yeah, right," Maggie snorted.
"I'm serious! Trust me, once everyone know this room has cleared they'll descend like vultures, there'll be nothing left."
Maggie arched a brow and then muttered, "Hui, better grab something now before Lennox takes the table too."
"My men aren't that hungry," he joked as he reached under the cabinet to pull out a box of plastic wrap and wrapped up a plate. Once that was done he started to fill another.
Hui stood and walked over to pick up a bottle of green tea, "I think I'll wait until dinner."
"Alright," Maggie said with a grin as the two women left the colonel to his task. Outside were Hui's guards waiting patiently, Maggie frowned at them and shouted back into the conference room, "Lennox, will you call of your people?"
Bill looked up, "Can't, not until Mearing gives the okay."
Maggie turned, "Alright. Gents, you better go in there and grab something to eat, we'll wait. Go on Thompson, we won't bolt."
The captain turned and regarded the two women as he motioned for his men to go inside, "That's alright, I can wait."
"I wouldn't," Maggie snorted, "you should see the pile Lennox is grabbing. It's like the man hasn't eaten in weeks. He says it's for his men. Yeah right."
Colonel Lennox stepped out his hands carrying a rather impressive stack of plates, "Am not. Want proof, follow me."
"Alright," Maggie challenged.
Captain Thompson looked worried, "Uh…."
Lennox nodded back to the conference room, "Just tell 'em you'll be on the walk way."
Thompson nodded, "Yes sir." With quick steps he entered the door way where his soldiers were busy making plates for themselves and said, "You heard the Colonel, when you're done meet us at the elevated walkway."
With that accomplished he followed the Colonel, Maggie, and the doctor to the elevated walkway.

While Theodore was in the meeting his assistant had left him a text which he picked up once he took his seat in his limousine, it read, 'Shipment retrieved.'
He smiled as he ordered his driver, "Take me to the warehouse."
— The Capitol —
The last of the committee meetings gratefully ended at 2 and as the room's occupants disbursed Francine leaned forward, "Director Mearing?"
Sam and Carly turned with curiosity as the Director answered, "Yes?"
Francine started to hand Charlotte her phone to show her texts when the director waved the phone aside tiredly, "Just tell me."
Francine's eyes slid over to Sam and Carly and then back to the Director. Charlotte nodded, "It's okay, they're cleared."
Francine pulled back obviously concerned but explained, "Optimus advises the device has been taken care of. Also Dr. Chen has decided to remain. He also said Galloway intimated NEST doesn't have a future and wants to know if you've heard anything. He also warns you to prepare for fallout."
Charlotte nodded, "Is that it."
Francine shook her head, "No there are other items that don't pertain to NEST. These were higher priority but if you like, I can outline everything in detail on the way back to HHS."
Charlotte rose to her feet and quickly picked up her things, "Okay. Well, ambassadors, I appreciate your help today. It seems the little bomb dropped earlier has changed the meeting schedule so you're free to go back to NEST or whatever embassy tasks you need to address. As soon as I learn more I'll get back with you."
Sam nodded as he disconnected his phone and tablet and placed them in his briefcase. With an arm through Carly's the small group headed to their various transports with the same destination in mind.
A/N: Apologies, like always, for any editing, typographical, grammatical, and continuity errors. PM me if you note anything serious. Last, I'm not really a Congressional Rules aficionado so any errors in how committee hearings are actually run is because I was too tired to do research so I could get this posted timely. Thanks for your understanding! Tootles!
