Chapter 35

"Willowfur! Wake up! Wake up!" Patchfeather cried nosing her mother's body. She knew that the cat was dead, but her mind just couldn't accept that the cat that she had known since she was born was gone. "Please! Willowfur!" Patchfeather sobbed, then pressed against her mother's body. No pulse pounded against her skin like when she was a kit. The body was already getting cold. Patchfeather dug her muzzle into her fur, breathing in the scent of her mother. She ignored the smells of blood and death that hit her nose. But her mind had finally accepted it, Willowfur was a member of StarClan now. "I love you." Patchfeather cried and licked the wound on her mother's neck. Which had stopped pumping blood.

Suddenly, she heard cats crashing through the forest. She smelled the air, Flamewhisker. Her fur rose, her claws unsheathed. This was his fault, if he hadn't tried to capture her, Willowfur would be alive. She rose to her paws, grief replaced into anger as the orange pelt appeared. Flamewhisker stared in astonishment at Patchfeather, then his eyes landed on Willowfur. No grief hit him, he looked quite bored actually. Then he saw Twig, now he was upset. He yelped and scrambled over to Twig's body. "Who did this!" He cried. He obviously didn't want an answer but Patchfeather didn't care.

"Me" she snarled "and as for who did this..." she flicked her tail at Willowfur's lifeless body. "You! You fox-dung, mouse-brained cold-blooded traitor!" She yowled the last part, her strong voice, thick with grief and fury rung through the forest. Flamewhisker rose to his paws.

Fury and loathing filled his gaze, his pelt prickled, claws unsheathed, she snapped her teeth threateningly. "You." He said quietly. "You killed Twig. Now, I'm gonna kill you!" Flamewhisker lunged at her, claws outstretched. She easily rolled out of the way and snapped at his tail. Her teeth connected, she bit down, hard. Blood filled her mouth, just like how blood now stained Willowfur's body. She bit harder. Flamewhisker yowled and gave her a slash to the side, making her let go. He snapped his teeth at her neck, she rolled out of the way, but was pinned. Patchfeather yowled and dug her claws into his chest, and her back claws into his belly. But Flamewhisker had dug his claws into her shoulders.

Patchfeather hissed and spit, raking her hind legs down his stomach. He gave a little whimper, but instead of moving away, he dove for her neck. She screeched and quickly angled her body so that her stomach touched the ground and pushed forwards with her hind legs. His teeth connected with her shoulder, she let out a yelp of pain as he dug deeper. With a push she launched him off, pain filled her back, but she ignored it, one glance at Willowfur enabled her to ignore it.

Suddenly, as the two cats circled each other, both bloody from one another's claws and teeth, a silver shape landed on top of Flamewhisker. Patchfeather gasped, it was Dewdrop. She quickly wrestled him to the ground, Patchfeather scrambled to help. "How could you, Flamewhisker!" Dewdrop hissed, digging her claws into his fur. "You are a warrior!" She spit.

Flamewhisker struggled against her but suddenly went limp, Patchfeather pressed harder against him, she was not going to be tricked by this traitor. "Dewdrop! Surely you're smart enough! The Free Cats greatly outnumber us! Plus, I'm not gonna be bossed around like a kit by a leader! Come with me! We can dispose of Patchfeather and high-tail it out of here!" Dewdrop bristled.

"No! I will not! I saw you! I heard you! I was fighting a enemy over there." She pointed her tail behind her. "You don't care about Willowfur! She was our mother! I would've come sooner, but Patchfeather was taking care of you, and I was busy. At least I'm loyal to my clan to the end, to death. Obviously you're not!" She spat. Patchfeather gave her brother, no, this traitor, a smug look.

Flamewhisker sighed and shook his head. "You're just as dumb as Patchfeather, Dewdrop. You're just like Coltfur and Willowfur, stupid. At least I have brains."

Patchfeather just managed to restrain herself from slashing Flamewhisker's nose off, Dewdrop, however, had less self control. She sliced his chest, leaving a deep, long scratch. "At least we have loyalty." Patchfeather said calmly.

"Shut up, Patchfeather, no one wants your loyalty. What can you do!? You couldn't even save Willowfur! You're useless, who would want a disabled cat as a warrior anyways!?" Flamewhisker meowed.

The words stung Patchfeather like a blow to the head, for a second she was speechless. Maybe he was right...maybe she wasn't fit out to be a warrior...
