Chapter 35: Let There be Light
"Don't you lecture me. Blue Box Man, flying through time and space on whimsy. All I've got, all I've had for thirty-six years is cold hard reality. So, no, I don't have a sonic screwdriver because I'm not off on a romp. Call it what it is. A probe. And I call my life what it is. Hell."
-Amelia Pond
"Open fire!"
Jefferson raised his weapon and started to fire at the Ood, who one by one fell to the ground, dead. There was no drive to defend themselves, only to attack.
Amy moved her jaw back and forth. They had reached the mouth of the pit, and it had opened. She had felt a surge of power when it had as the rest of his consciousness joined with the bit that had possessed her in the first place. It was all she had to not let her eyes flash glowing red and give herself away.
"We're stabilizing." Zach's voice came through the speak and Amy let out a breath of relief. If they lost orbit now all their plans would be for not. "We've got orbit."
They stepped over the dead bodies of the Ood, and back towards the comm. Rose grabbed it immediately, "Doctor?"
There was no reply.
"Doctor, can you hear me?" Her voice was panicked, "Doctor? Ida? Are you there?"
"Open door 25."
Jefferson and the remaining guard quickly spun around to face whatever was coming through, but Amy just stayed still, patiently waiting to see if the Doctor had been dealt with yet.
It didn't matter. If the pit hadn't taken him, then he would die when his oxygen ran out.
"It's me!" Danny raised his hands quickly, sounding extremely out of breath, "But they're coming."
"Close door 25."
Danny let out a shaky breath, "It's the Ood. They've gone mad."
"We noticed." Amy pointed to the dead bodies on the floor.
Jefferson stiffened, "How many of them."
"All of them!" Danny shouted, "All fifty!"
Jefferson ran closer to the door, "Danny, out of the way." Danny didn't move, frozen in shock, "Out of the way!"
He pushed Danny out of the way but the younger man turned, shouting back, "But they're armed! They're da-" Jefferson ignored him and started to open the door. Danny turned to him, "It's the interface device. I don't know how, but they're using it as a weapon."
Amy smirked. She had thought of that one herself. A memory in her mind of an Ood with glowing eyes chasing her through halls and doors.
"Open door 25."
He opened it and Amy held back a giggle as she saw a few Oods standing on the other side. Before anyone could blink one raised its glowing white orb into the guards forehead. He jolted and screamed and fell to he floor dead.
Jefferson's eyes flashed and he opened fire against the Ood.
"Jefferson, what'd happening, there?"
Jefferson pulled up his wrist, "I've got very little ammunition, sir. How about you?"
There was a moment's pause, "All I've got is a bolt gun. With uh...all of one bolt. I could takeout a grand total of one Ood. Fat lot of good that is."
"Given the emergency..." Jefferson started, looking nervous, "I recommend Strategy Nine."
"Strategy Nine agreed." Zach sounded defeated, "Right, we need to get everyone together. Rose? What about Ida and the Doctor? Any word?"
Amy raised an eyebrow in satisfaction. A memory from Tony's mind came to her. Leaving the planet.
"I can't get any reply." Rose answered him, "Just...nothing, I keep trying, but it's..."
The comm device crackled for a few seconds and the Doctor's voice came through, "No! Sorry, I'm fine. Still here!"
Amy's smirk dropped as she heard his voice, but Rose let out a breath of relief, "You could've said, you stupid bastard!"
The Doctor yelped on his end, "Whoa! Careful! Anyway, it's both of us, me and Ida. Hello! But the seal opened up. It's gone. All we've got left is this chasm."
"How deep is it?" Zach asked.
"Can't tell. It looks like it does on forever."
Rose swallowed, "'The Pit is Open'." She repeated, "That's what the voice said."
"But there's nothing? I mean..." Zach trailed off, sounding worried. "There's...nothing coming out?"
"No, no." The Doctor assured them, "No sign of 'the Beast'."
Amy ran her tongue over her teeth, sucking in the pure fear of the people around her, using it as an anchor to this Body.
Rose took in a shaky breath, "It said 'Satan'."
"Come on, Rose. Keep it together."
But Rose's fear was too strong, "Is there no such thing?" The Doctor didn't respond and her eyes welled with tears, "Doctor? Doctor, tell me there's no such thing."
But the Doctor never answered.
Sensing the awkward silence Zach spoke up, "Ida? I recommend that you withdraw. Immediately."
"But...we've come all this way."
"Okay, that was an order. WITHDRAW. With that thing open, the whole planet's shifted. One more inch and we fall into the black hole. So this thing stops now."
Amy leaned over into the comm, "Doctor I think he'd right. Whatever's down there is bad news. We should leave."
The Doctor didn't respond, but Ida did, "It's not much better up there with the Ood."
"I'm initiating Strategy Nine, so I need the two of back up top immediately, no arguing." Instead of a response static came through, "Ida? IDA?"
"What happened?" Rose gasped, looking terrified.
Zach grumbled under his breath, sounding annoyed, "She turned off the comm."
A low groan brought Amy's attention to the floor. Toby was finally stirring, coming to life. She smirked at him and his eyes flashed red before he took on the persona of the terrified Archaeologist once more.
"Rose, Amy." The static voice of the Doctor came through, "We're coming back."
Rose let out a breath of relief, but Amy furrowed her eyebrow. The Doctor would be able to tell something was wrong with them. He was supposed to die down there, and the Ood would kill the others and they'd make a break for it.
But Rose just grinned, "Best news I've heard all day!"
This must be why Toby woke up. He needed a new plan.
Cords.
She heard the word echo through her mind and nodded. That would work very well.
Jefferson looked over at Toby and fixed his jaw, releasing the safety catch.
"What're you doing?" Rose gapped at him.
He aimed his gun at Toby and Amy moved forward.
Stay. Let's see what he does...
Amy stayed still, watching the older man threaten Toby
"He's infected." Jefferson defended himself, "He brought that thing on board. You saw it."
Toby's eyes widened dramatically and welled up in just enough tears to make it realistic.
Rose ran up to Jefferson, "Are you gonna start shooting your own people, now? Is that what you're gonna do? Is it?"
"If necessary."
"Well then, you'll have to shoot me 'if necessary', so what's it gonna be."
Amy felt a jolt of panic inside her that confused her. She suddenly had a strong urge to run forward and grab Rose.
"Okay." Amy held up a hand, "Nobody's shooting anyone. everyone clam down."
She frowned at her own protectiveness of the girl. It must be because she was their contingency plan, should the Doctor fail to die. Yes, that was it.
Rose shot Jefferson one last dirty look before kneeling beside Toby, "Look at his face. Whatever it was, it's gone. It passed into the Ood. You saw it happen. He's clean."
Jefferson considered it for a moment before relenting, "Any sign of trouble...I'll shoot him." And then he walked away.
Amy moved over and helped Toby to his feet.
Rose smiled at him gently, "Are you all right?"
"Yeah...I..." His voice was thick, shaking his head, "Dunno.
"It's gonna be okay." Amy assured him, 'We're getting out of here. Strategy Nine."
Toby grinned, "Finally."
To Rose it must've looked like he was relieved to finally be done with all this. She looked at him gently, "Can you remember anything?"
"Just...it was so angry. It was...fury and rage...death..."He turned and fixed his eyes on Rose, "It was him. It was the devil."
"Come here." Rose whispered pull Toby into a comforting hug. He squeezed her back tightly, rubbing her back as he sent a chilling smirk over her should towards Amy.
They all waited by the exploration deck silently. They listened intently to the comm, waiting for the Doctor and Ida to get back in contact with them.
"Okay, we're in. Bring us up."
Amy waited for the moment. She would have to be the one to snap them, they were watching Toby too closely and he hadn't been allowed near any of the equipment.
"Ascension in...three...two...one."
All at once everything happened. The mechanism failed and the lights flashed off.
"This is the darkness." The voice of the Beast came through, echoing throughout the room as the lights flashed on and off, giving everything the illusion of moving slowly. "This is my little things that live in the light...clinging to your feeble Suns which die in the-"
"That's not the Ood. Something's talking through them." Zach's voice came through over the comm.
"Only darkness remains."
Zach had apparently had enough of it, "This is Captain Zachary Cross Flame of sanctuary Base Six representing the Torchwood archive. You will identify yourself."
Amy ran through her hosts memories. Torchwood, she'd heard that before. Victorian Scotland. Obviously no connection. She turned her attention back to her plan.
"You know my name." The Beast hissed.
"What do you want."
They still hadn't heard anything from Ida or the Doctor. Amy could see Rose looking at the comm nervously.
"You will die here. All of you. This planet is your grave."
"It's him...it's him...it's him..." Toby whispered, rocking slightly in terror.
"If you are the Beast, then answer me this: which one? Hmm?" The Doctor finally decided to grace the conversation with his presence. "'Cos the universe has been busy since you've been gone. There's more religions than there are planets in the sky. The Archivits...Pordonity, Christianity...Pash-Pash, new Judaism...Sanclar...Church of the Tin Vagabond - which devil are you?"
"All of them."
The Doctor paused before answering, "What, then you're the truth behind the myth."
"This one knows me - as I know him. The Killer of his own kind."
The Doctor choose not to acknowledge that, "How did you end up on this rock."
"The disciples of the Light rose up against me. And chained me in the pit for all eternity."
"When was this?"
"Before time."
"What does THAT mean?"
"Before time." The Beast repeated.
"What does 'before time' MEAN?"
"Before light and time and space and matter. Before the cataclysm. Before the universe was created."
"...That's impossible. No life could have existed back then."
"Is that your religion?"
"...It's a belief."
"You know nothing. All of you. So small. The Captain, so scared of command. The solider, haunted by the eyes of his wife. The Scientist, still running from daddy. The little boy who lied. The Virgin, The Girl who waited, still waiting. And the lost girl, so far away from home. The valiant child who will die in battle so very soon..."
"Doctor..." Rose's voice shook as she stared down in horror, "What does it mean?"
"Rose, don't listen." The Doctor said quietly, a small amount of fear entering his voice for the first time.
"What does it mean?" Rose repeated.
"You will die..." The voice answered her, "And I will live."
And for the first time the true form of the beast showed itself. The Ood vanished and an image of a horned monstrosity, rearing back in a roar that might have been mistaken as a cruel form of laughter. Everyone stumbled back with a gasp, but Amy just stared at it, transfixed.
The empty shell of her former home was nothing but a bubbling mix of anger and primal instinct. Hardly anything to be afraid of. Yet even the image of her former visage was enough to cause the fear in the room to increase to near unbearable levels.
"What the hell was that?" Danny's voice was high-pitched.
Everybody started to speak over each other, yelling and talking and increasing the panic and fear.
"I had that thing inside my head!" Toby started it, then watch it unfold before him.
"Doctor, what did it mean?"
"What do we do? Jefferson?"
Jefferson spoke into his wrist device, "Captain? What's the situation on Strategy Nine?"
"Zach what do we do?"
"What if I can fix it?...The black hole, everything's true." Toby mumbled
"Captain, report."Jefferson shouted.
"We've lost pictures" Zach grumbled.
"Doctor, how did it know all of-"
"Did anyone get-"
"Jefferson?"
"Stop-"
"What did it mean?"
"Everyone just stop-"
Amy smirked, walking the insanity in front of her, but sneered forwards the Comm. The Doctor's voice of reason would calm them down. He seriously needed to be dealt with. She looked over at Toby who looked as annoyed as she was. He nodded at her.
She nodded and closed her eyes, concentrating.
"What do we do?"
"Report."
A loud screech echoed around the room making everyone grab their ears. Amy twitched but kept her eyes closed, focused on the task at hand.
"If you want voices in the dark, then listen to mine; that thing is playing on very basic fears. Darkness - childhood nightmares, all that stuff."
Danny swallowed, "But that's how the devil works."
"Or a good psychologist."
"But..." Ida's voice came through, "How did it know about my father?"
The Doctor paused, "Okay, but what makes his version of the truth any better than mine? Hmm? Cos I'll tell you what I can see: humans. Brilliant humans. Humans who travel all the way across space. Flying in a tiny little rocket into the orbit of a black hole! Just for the sake of discovery, that's amazing! Do you hear me? Amazing. All of you. The captain - his officer - his elder- his genius - his friends. All with one advantage. The Beast is alone. We are not. If we can use that to fight against him-"
Amy snarled under her breathed and with a snap, twisted her clenched fist.
A loud bang echoed throughout the entire room, making everyone duck out of reflex.
Ida was the first person to understand, her voice echoing through the comm, "The cable's snapped!"
"Get out!"
The comm fizzled and died out as a huge bang echoed through the shaft as the cabled snapped down onto the capsule with force. Amy opened her eyes and watched as dust started to escape from the shaft.
"Doctor!" Roe cried in a panic, running over, "We lost the cable! Doctor, are you all right?"
"Comms are down." Zach's voice came through.
Amy twisted her face into a look of terror, "What the hell caused that?"
"I don't know." Danny shook his head, "Those cables are near unbreakable. I can't even think of something that..." He trailed off swallowing.
"Doctor?" Rose continued, despite everything, "Doctor, can you hear me?"
"I've still got life signs." Zach's voice came through and Amy's lip twitched, "But...we've lost the capsule."
Amy shifted her jaw. That dreaded Doctor was still alive, but this would have to do. He had no knowledge of the hidden passages into the pit, and even if he did he would run out of oxygen long before returning to the base.
"Say something." Rose cried into the Comm, "Are you there."
Amy felt a twinge in her gut and frowned. That was the second time that had happened. Toby looked over at her warningly and she frowned, nodding at him. She had it all under control.
"Amy..." Rose whispered, "Your nose."
Amy reached up, touching the blood which dripped down. She must've overdone it with the cables. Danny was right, they had been strong. But something in her memory reminded her that this was a common occurrence in this body.
She quickly whipped it away and continued. There was only a few of them left.
"There's no way out." Zach whispered. "They're stuck down there."
"No." Rose whispered, looking on the verge of hyperventilation, "No, there...there has to be something..."
Amy swallowed, looking down, "Rose, I don't think-"
"No!" Rose snapped at her, "I don't know what's wrong with you, if it's your illness, or if you've just lost your bloody mind, but we don't give up on him."
"But be realistic." Amy tried to reason with her, they needed to get to the ship and leave, "How long can we wait for him."
Rose shook her head at her in disbelief, "The rest of our lives."
Amy frowned and sighed, looking down. If the human wanted to stay here and die with the others, than so be it.
Rose sent her one last dirty look, then walked over to the shaft and peered down along with Danny and Jefferson.
"But...we've got to bring them back." She whispered.
Jefferson shook his head, "They're ten miles down. We haven't got another ten miles of cable."
Another loud bang echoed throughout the base and everyone jumped. Amy twisted her head wondering what was happening. This one wasn't her.
Jefferson lifted his wrist, "Captain? Situation report."
There was an unnerving silence before Zach's breathless voice came through, "It's the Ood. They're cutting through the door bolts. They're breaking in."
They turned and heard the banging on the door to the room.
Jefferson hissed, "Yeah, it's the same on Door 25."
"How long's it gonna take." Rose whispered.
"Well." Jefferson swallowed, "It's only a basic frame, it should take ten minutes."
"Eight." Amy corrected as the Ood slammed at the door.
"I've got a security frame, it might last a bit longer, but that doesn't help you."
"Right." Rose whispered, "So we need to stop them - or get out - or both."
"I'll take both, yeah?" Danny squeaked, "But how?"
"You heard the Doctor!" Rose started in a more confident voice, "Why do you think that thing cut him off? 'Cos he was making sense. He was telling you to think your way out of this. Come on! For a start, we need some lights. There's gotta be some sort of power switch."
"There's nothing I can do." Zach said bitterly, "Some captain, stuck in here, pressing buttons."
"That's what the Doctor Meant: press the right buttons." Rose urged.
Zach sighed, "They've gutted the generators!" He paused, "But the rocket's got an independent supply. If I could reroute that..."
Amy frowned, "Will we have enough power left to get off the planet."
"No. But once you get to the Ship I'll reroute the power back to the rocket." He sounded excited now, "Mr. Jefferson? Open the bypass conduits. Override the safety..."
Jefferson started to press buttons madly, "Opening bypass conduits, sir."
"Channeling rocket feed. In 3...2...1...power."
All around the room lights flickered to life. Rose clapped, looked full of life and confidence. "There we go."
Danny laughed, "Let there be light."
"Yeah." Amy nodded, narrowing her eyes. "Let there be light."
A/N: Sorry this took so long, I've been busy with school mostly and haven't been able to really focus on writing for a while. This is another filler chapter, but things'll pick up in the next chapter.
Awesome news! We've surpassed the first story in terms of reviews! Which is insane! I'm also super close to 500 reviews! So I figure when I hit 500 I'll give a shout out to the 500th review and give you guys a sneak peak!
Anon Review Replies
Misty: Thank you so much. I have to ask...Missionaries? Is that for school? Cause I know that feel.
Ashuradahedgehog: Tennant from the 50th is from in between The Waters of Mars and End of Time. We know this because at the beginning of end of time the Doctor says that one of the reasons that he's late meeting with Ood Sigma is because he got married to Queen 'Bess', who is Queen Elizabeth I. That's also why he didn't have a companion with him - because it took place during the specials, when he had no permanent companion.
AngelofGrace96: Thank you so much!
Guest: Thanks for the review!
You guys have been so awesome with reviews! And remember when we hit 500 i'll give a shout out and a preview! So review with any comments, concerns or questions!
Until Next Time,
